CHAPTER FOUR:
HER LEG IS BROKEN

ELAINE SAT THERE WITH A chart in her hand along with a pen as she scanned over the severity of the patient. She moved the braid from off her shoulder, clicking the pen before placing it back in the pocket of her shirt. She jumped when a hand was place on her shoulder, relaxing slightly upon noticing her mother who took the computer beside of her.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." Melissa McCall said with a small laugh. "You didn't have to come. We're pretty slow today, actually."

"I need the money." Elaine shrugged her shoulders. "Besides, I actually enjoy working here part time with very minimum pay. The clinic makes up for it though."

"How was school?" She questioned, typing on the computer.

"School was school." She answered with a sigh. "Scott actually did pretty good at practice today. He caught like, every ball." Melissa raised her eyebrows in surprise at this. Elaine laughed, nodding slightly, "My reaction exactly."

"What time do you have to be at the clinic?" Melissa questioned. Elaine shrugged her shoulders, standing up and walking across the hall to put the chart in the patients door before walking back towards her mother. "Whenever I get through here. I'll probably go help Scott close up since it's already late."

"Lydia getting you?" Melissa questioned.

"Hopefully." Elaine sighed. Melissa finished with the computer before standing up and giving Elaine a kiss on the head as she passed by.

"Don't stress yourself out, you did that last year, and that ended badly." Melissa pointed out to her. Elaine remembered how stressed she became from trying to balance school and two jobs. She ended up having a breakdown and had to take a break from everything for about four weeks, Scott having to bring her her homework and explain it to her so she wouldn't get even more behind. That was a low point for her.

"I won't. I promise." Elaine says, giving her mother a reassuring smile. Melissa smiled at her, patting her shoulder as she walked by. Elaine closed her eyes, letting out a soft sigh before she quickly went back to work.

"Scotty? I'm here! I know it's after closing, sorry I'm late." Elaine called, hanging up her coat and pushing through the gate. She entered the bathroom, changing out of her scrubs before walking out and into the room where Scott was. He offered her a small smile to which she returned.

"How was the hospital?" He questioned. Elaine hopped onto the table, shrugging her shoulders.

"It was normal. No lunatics or anything like that came in today." Elaine clicked her tongue. "Anything for me to do?"

"I haven't gotten around to feeding the animals, if you'd like to do that?" Scott told her. Elaine nodded before jumping down and walking over towards the food.

"Did you and Stiles find what you were looking for?" She called, deciding on the bird food first since there were barely any of those inside the clinic. It was mostly filled with cats and dogs, a few birds and other animals here and there.

"Uh, no." He called back. "The police must've found the body and put it in the morgue."

"Good. Maybe the family will be able to mourn the person now that they've found the body. Well. . . half of it." Elaine said with a soft sigh. She walked out of the room and down to wear the animals were kept. She fed the birds, and then the exotic animals. The dogs and cats were going to take the longest, seeing as they had way more of those. She smiled at the animals, petting them as she gave them their food. She placed the bag of food back in its original spot before walking out and closing the door, turning her head when she heard Scott talking.

"Scott? Who are you talking to?" Elaine questioned, entering the room only to Allison there, a white dog laying on the table. She frowned, quickly walking up to the dog and running her hand along its fur. "What happened?"

"I didn't see her. A-and I hit her." Allison stuttered, tears forming in her eyes all over again.

"Hey, it's okay." Elaine told her.

"I think her leg is broken." Scott told the two females, Elaine moving so that she could see what he was talking about before nodding her head in agreement. "I've seen the doctor do plenty of splints, I can try it myself and give him a pain killer for now."

Whilst Scott worked, Elaine walked over to the medical cabinet, taking the key to unlock it before pulling out the painkillers and walking over to the dog. She gave the dog the pain killer just as Scott finished up with the splint. Upon noticing Alison's shivering from the pouring rain outside, Scott spoke up. "I have a t-shirt in my bag."

"Oh, I don't want to trouble you." Allison quickly waved him off. However, Scott ignored her and took the shirt from his bag, handing it to the female. Allison gave a small smile before walking out of the room, the two siblings staying there with the dog. Elaine glanced up just as Scott glanced towards the direction of the girl, making Elaine quickly slap him on the head.

"Ow!" Scott hissed, the dog looking up at him as well whilst Elaine raised an eyebrow at him. "What? I didn't see anything."

"Mhm." Elaine scoffed.

"Get me some more bandage, would ya?" Scott muttered. Elaine smirked before doing as he asked, tossing the bandage towards him whilst he wrapped the splint one more time, finishing up just as Allison walked in.

"Thanks for doing this." Allison spoke, smiling at the two, though Elaine knew that it was more for her brother. "I feel really stupid."

"How come?" Scott questioned, Elaine taking it upon herself to focus on the dog.

"I don't know. 'Cause I freaked out like a total girl." Allison replied.

"You are a girl." Scott told her, making Elaine smirk slightly.

"I freaked out like a girly girl. And I am not a girly girl."

"I'll be right back." Elaine spoke, walking out of the room and closing the door behind her so as to give the duo some privacy. She smiled, walking down the clinic halls as she gave the duo some alone time. As she walked past one of the doors, it creaked open. Elaine frowned, turning her head before looking towards the direction Scott and Alison were before walking to the door and going to close it. However she stopped upon hearing whispered. She frowned.

"Hello?" The whispers only continued. "If someone's in here, you aren't supposed to be." However, there was no response, just the whispers. Elaine huffed before flicking the light switch, only for the light not to come on. She tried the switch multiple times before muttering words under her breath. She pulled out her phone, turning on her flashlight as she entered the room.

"Claudo te." The door behind her slammed shut, making the girl jump and spin around. She frowned, walking towards the door and turning the knob, only for the door not to open. Her heart rate seemed to spike. "Tardus pulsato." Suddenly, her heart rate slowed down and a figure appeared in front of her, though she couldn't see the woman seeing as she had used a spell to make herself invisible.

"Hello, Elaine." The woman softly whispered. Elaine scurried away from the invisible woman, turning towards the door and trying her best to pull it open. The woman watched her struggle, fear evident in the girl's eyes. She watched the teenager for a few seconds, widening her eyes slightly as she started to bang on the door, calling out for her brother's name. Allison had just walked out, thankfully, and upon hearing Elaine's calls for him, Scott quickly took off towards the direction she was in.

"Scott!" She yelled out, pulling at the doorknob.

"You don't need to do that." The woman spoke, making herself visible. Elaine's eyes widened making her let out a scream.

"Get away from me!" She snapped.

"El?" Scott yelled for her.

"Scott, open the door!" She called. Scott twisted the knob, trying to push it open but to no avail. Tears started to fill her eyes, she didn't like being in dark rooms with strange people. She didn't like the dark. It was the one thing that scared her. The woman quickly spoke another spell before disappearing, Scott kicking the door open whilst Elaine flew out of the room and into the arms of her brother.

"Hey, you're okay." He gently told her, glancing towards the dark room as he held onto her.

"I'm sorry." She mumbled. "Th-the door wouldn't open. And the light wouldn't work-"

"I'll make sure to get doc to look at it tomorrow." He told the girl, shushing her. She pulled away from him and he offered her a small smile before wiping the tears from her eyes and moving to close the door. "Come on. It's getting late and we have to walk home."

"Don't you have your bike?" Elaine questioned.

"You really think I'm about to let you walk home alone?" Scott questioned, raising an eyebrow at the girl. "You're crazy." Elaine chuckled as he threw an arm around her shoulders and the duo exited the clinic, Scott grabbing his bike before they made their way home.
