iv • black out

"I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE you did that yesterday!" Bella was grinning, eyes wide and glittering with excitement while I was busy shooting glares. How the conversation rolled from school assignments to what happened the previous day still remained a puzzle.

Betty's Cafe was barely crowded so, Bella's voice drew the attention of other customers. The air had humid warmth lingering, and it calmed me down a bit. I picked up my cup of coffee and brought it up to my plump lips that craved for it, taking careful sips from the bitter sweet liquid.

'I'm a boxer.'

His velvet voice kept ringing in my head, like an annoying music put on repeat, and the fact that I almost got into a fight with-a boxer-was infact still shocking.

"I didn't know you were that strong!" She kept on ranting on the things that happened in the cafeteria with the guys and I didn't know whether to keep my poise between calm or annoyed.

"Alright Bella," I cut her off, "I am strong okay? Can we skip that topic?"

"There's no way I'm skipping the topic about some hot guys from the cafeteria."

I opened my mouth to respond but like a ranter she was beat me to it-again. "Do you know what this means? We've met the popular boxer in this college and the descriptions didn't lie, he's damn hot." Slender fingers around the handle her cup, she took a sip from the coffee before placing it back down, which brought about a click as it made contact with the glass table.

I rolled my eyes, bringing a scowl to my face.

She playful nudged my ribcage, "You look better with a smile rather than a frown, fighter." she teased but my mind was far too clouded to consider what she said. Thinking and thinking of the nonentity life decided to send my way.

I let out a groan. "He's so so frustrating!"

"The boxer?"

Throat dry, my heartbeat picked up slightly just at the sheer mention of him, making my blood boil. "Of course the boxer, he was the same guy who messed up my white top on Saturday."

"Really?"

"Yes and what we have is literally hate at first sight."

"You know," she started off, her pearl teeth showcasing. Bella was like an open book of joy and happiness and the smile that laces are glossy lips everyday is uncountable- except that, her grinning this time, seemed way off; sly.

She continued with her sentence, "In all most all cliche romance book I've read, two arch-nemesis always ended up. . . falling in love."

"Ew! Gross. Me and him? No way! It wouldn't even happen in our after life."

She threw her head back in laughter, wisps of her jet black hair dancing behind her and it was really obvious that Bella was a charming girl that could make any guy go crazy. Her smile brightens day, her eyes sparkles like diamonds and of course, -her friendship- I would always be grateful for that.

"Girls in this college are dying to be with him but you? You're doing the opposite. You're going to be hard to understand." she shook her head, amusement dancing in her eyes.

"Don't worry, you'll get used to me," I shrugged. Attempting to reduce the dryness in my mouth, I swallowed more of my coffee, but the bitterness tingled across my tongue.

I drummed my fingers in accordance to the soft music that played in the background, letting my eyes wander around the cafe until they stopped on a table with a group of all gorgeous guys -wait,- those are- the same guys from the cafeteria.

The brown eyed guy, whom I had punched, for some reason turned his direction to our table and his face fell just like mine. He shot me a straight glare which I returned before turning to face Bella who was too busy enjoying her sandwich to notice the guys two seats away from us.

"Hurry up with your lunch alright, we have to go."

Her head shot up immediately, an eyebrow raised at me. "Why are you bent on leaving right away?"

"I just remembered I've got class to attend." it wasn't really a complete lie; just that I had it in thirty minutes but I wasn't determined to stay for even another five minutes.

She stared at me for a while, as if trying to figure out something. Letting out a sigh she said, "Is that really the reason?"

"Ugh. Fine, it's not. The same guys are in this cafe and I'm not willing to stay here any longer." Frustrated, I pointed at their table.

She turned to look at the table before turning back to me, "they seem calm today."

"Oh please! I've already seen their nature. First Impression speaks it all."

She narrowed her eyes at me, "where did you even get that? Besides, maybe they all aren't bad, I mean we know only the two guys got bad manners, the other two had been quiet and the boxer guy. . . He seems harmless."

"You know they say; birds of the same feathers always flock together."

"Girl, you've gotta stop that."

I grinned. "I'll stop if we go."

"Fine."

While she hurried with her lunch, my eyes couldn't help but fall on their table again- and this time,- the boxer excused himself from the table, a phone placed on his ears. He shook and nodded his head multiple times, lips moving as he spoke into the phone. His poise seemed calm and relaxed and I have no idea why my eyes held him captive.

He caught my gaze in a flash and his face morphed into confusion. Then- he walked away.

The never ending class of computer science stirred something in me which got my attention boosted, though it did result in a headache, unlike the guys in front of me who had stifled about thirty yawns since class commenced. Apart from my head, backache was killing me too, having been slouched over a laptop.

The Universe wasn't generous to me as two of the guys from the group were in my class- one by me and the one I had punched whose face fell as mine did, two seats away from me. It could've been a lot more worse if the Villain himself was here.

"Hey."

I whipped my head to the direction of the voice that came from the boy by me. He was an absolute stunner- brown hair, green eyes and sharp jawlines. Even when a smile spread over his lips, I returned the favor with a scowl.

"It's nice to meet you."

I rolled my eyes at him. "I can't say the same thing."

"Oh, I'm sorry about my friends, especially the one over there," he finally pointed at the guy in front who paid no attention to what was going on.

And when I didn't give a response, he was still bent on holding onto the conversation. "The name's Walter, Walter Anderson." He paused, searching for my reaction before adding, "This is the part you tell me yours."

"Well, I don't want to," I told him rudely even when I knew he was trying to be nice because his condescending tone ticked me off, giving me the urge to wipe the smug off his bronzed flawless face—and I didn't trust him.

Shock consumed his features before he crossed his arms over his chest, leaning back to process my statement. The hint of a smile continued to saunter on his face as his hands curled around his accounting book. “You’re a sarcastic one, I see.”

“Thank you for your contribution, Einstein.”

"Aww, come on,” he sighed, all the playful shadows casting over his dense features turning serious. “I'm trying to be a gentleman here and apologizing on behalf of those dickheads is a great start." He gave me a cheeky grin and I was bound to listen to him.

"Alright," I sighed. "I suppose I also didn't give a good first impression being that your friend had a bleeding nose."

"He totally deserved it,” he mused.

"Really?" I asked, totally amused.

"Yes. He ate my burrito and I couldn't get back at him."

We both burst into fits of laughter. Walter kept his hands perched on the table and then; "Now we're friends, can I have the honor of knowing your name."

"First of all, acquintance. I'll decide when we can become friends. Second, my name is Carla. Carla Marshall.”

"Hmm," he hummed, "Carla, suits a tough girl like you."

I couldn't help but grin before turning back to face the teacher.

Class finally made a deal of ending for the day and saying I was dog-tired would be an understatement. As if that wasn't enough, the professor had announced an assignment which got my face to fall in a natural look of disbelief, lips pressed into a thin line. Sweat had already clouded my forehead and my palms had gone sticky.

Being that Bella had no lectures, she most certainly was at the dorm-I on the other hand,-had the frustrating assignment that was supposed to be submitted the following day but unfortunately, I had to go to the library to get answers.

Before I left for the library, I called her. It rang twice before her honey voice went through, "What's up babe?"

"Nothing much, are you at the dorm?"

"Yeah, why?"

I made a face. "Well, I'll be there late because I've got this assignment and need to be at the library."

She sighed. The sound of pages flipping reached my ears before she spoke again, and I know she must have been busy with an assignment. "Okay, when would you be back?"

"I should be done by an hour."

"Alright, I'll order something for us to eat."

"That would be appreciated, thanks."

I hung up and made my way down the almost empty hallway.

The library room was lit by the lights hanging above rather than the broad daylight. Stacks of books sat on the shelves that expanded over the walls. The room was filled with whispers that mainly came from the group of girls that sat in front of me. I was trying to concentrate on the assignment but the whispering and constant tap of keyboards distracted me. I groaned to myself as I shut the textbook, a part of me grateful that the assignment was done, and the other part of me annoyed that I still had another.

Whilst the lady in charge shushed the girls, I relocated to a much better position- at the back and continued writing.

Nothing about college education was appealing- there were incessant dose of daily headache, studies and assignment that never seemed to lessen. With my pen lying between my index and my thumb it glided across the open pages and I had covered two pages. One more page to go.

The incessant whispering from the few students in the library did nothing but added to my headache and when I was done with my work, my phone vibrated on the ebony table. A message from Bella.

You done?

Yeah, just rounded up though I feel like I've lost a lot of brain cells.

😂 Just hurry up.

Immediately the message got to me, I packed all books and grabbed my phone before bouncing out of my seat- quietly. I returned the few textbooks I had borrowed and made my way out of the library.

The hallway was empty.

My mind went to all the things that had happened as I walked down the hall. Maybe Walter wasn't really as bad as the rest, he could be the only one with sanity. But one of my biggest problems was-trust issues- mostly when it came to the male genders. Even if I trusted Walter, I don't believe I could ever trust the boxer guy. I think the universe was super unfair, people like him doesn't deserve to be blessed with good looks.

I shoved my thoughts deep within and kept strolling down the long hallway. It had been few days though, but I was much more happier and free- I knew I shouldn't have even gotten it because life thought I didn't deserve it. Especially because I wasn't even supposed to be born. I let out a sigh and stood in front of the exit door.

As my fingers grazed the door, something-maybe a fist, smashed into the back of my head. The force at which I was hit caused my head to ache greatly. I placed both hands on my head as the room suddenly began spinning. Carla no! Fighting to stay conscious, I blinked repeatedly and tried to move but my vision blurred and darkness consumed my sight.
