PLOT SUMMARY:

ELPHABA had always hated herself. Growing up a witch should have been a dream come true. Life in the Wizarding World was always ever so exciting; full of such glorious technicolour.

     It was every magic child's dream to attend Wizarding school when they turned eleven. Their little eyes eagerly scouting for the owl that would deliver them their acceptance letter to Hogwarts. But not Elphaba. At the age of fifteen, the young witch still had yet to step foot in the grounds she had begged her father to avoid for the past five years of her life. You see, Elphaba was terrified of attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, not because of the teachers or endless corridors just waiting for students to get lost in. No, Elphaba wasn't scared of the school or the professors, she was terrified of the students. Kids can be mean, especially when they find something funny. And unfortunately for Elphaba she was the something that children often found funny.

     Being born green was a curse, sentencing Elphaba to a childhood of torment and bullying. There was no way that Elphaba would ever step foot in a school. That would be a death sentence.

     But when Elphaba's sister, Matilda, receives her Hogwarts acceptance letter on her eleventh birthday, the girls' father insists on both attending the school together, in order for Elphaba to look after her younger sister.

     Elphaba wants nothing more than to disagree with her father, but with her younger sister thrown into the equation, Elphaba begrudgingly accepts. Thus, Elphaba begins her fifth year at Hogwarts, well behind the rest of her peers. When her lack of academic ability becomes apparent, Minerva McGonagall assigns Hermione Granger as Elphaba's tutor, immediately throwing the girl into the chaos that follows the Golden Trio around. Then in walks Ron Weasley. A boy determined to show Elphaba that being pretty on the outside is far less important than being pretty on the inside. Ron wants nothing more than to see Elphaba happy, but when Elphaba sees herself as nothing but a freak, his hopes are a little far-fetched. Determined to change the girl's mind, Ron Weasley begins to hatch a plan, which by with the help of Harry and Hermione slowly starts to make a difference.

Elphaba begins to learn to love herself, but also begins to love someone else. The only person who has ever truely shown her affection; the red-haired boy determined to show that looking different doesn't make her WICKED.

CHARACTER TRAITS TO CONSIDER:

— Elphaba has a fiery temperament. She may be shy and extremely insecure, but when it comes to the health and safety of her younger sister, she will not hesitate to hex whoever and whatever is posing a threat.

— She is five years behind in her studies, so will not be top of her class, therefore (although a pureblood), she is relatively clueless about the physical limits of magic. In short, think about how our favourite Hogwarts students were amazed by magic in their first year.

— Elphaba struggles to express her feelings. Her father raised her to keep her struggles to herself, meaning that it will take a while for Ron's attempts to have any impact on her.

— As a Hufflepuff, she is not only friends with the Golden Trio but her the members of her house too (and eventually others if you want).
