PLOT SUMMARY:

     VERITY COOK loved the ocean. Being the daughter of the captain of the SS Athenia, meant that she spent every day upon the water. Her father, Captain James Cook, securing her love for the ocean from the moment her four year old mind was able to distinguish land from sea.

     But when war breaks out in 1939, the trans-Atlantic route she had traveled since she was just five years old becomes perilous; the threat of German U-Boats lurking around every corner. Alas, James and Verity aren't worried. The SS Athenia had already made over 100 journeys from Glasgow to Montreal by the time of her fifteenth birthday, and her father was one of the most celebrated captains working for the Anchor-Donaldson line. But, on the 3rd September 1939, a German U-Boat attacks the SS Athenia. And suddenly, Verity and her father find themselves being thrown into a hell-scape in which over one hundred passengers lost their lives. Including Verity Cook.

     And so, when Verity finds herself being dragged out of the water, a pair of strong arms wrapped around her torso, she can't help but wonder if her fate was just a dream. After all, it isn't every day you find yourself in a magical world and in the company of a so-called 'Just King'.

     Edmund Pevensie couldn't quite wrap his head around the girl he dragged onto the Dawn Treader. There was something about her, so ghostly yet so alive. The young King felt a strange connection to Verity Cook, almost as if it were fate that was the catalyst for their adventure, and the reason her saved her from drowning UNDER THE WATER.

CHARACTER TRAITS TO CONSIDER:

      — Verity is an extremely bubbly and happy girl. Her relationship with her father was an extremely close one, so her character will take a turn once she gets to Narnia.

     — As the daughter of a ship's captain, Verity knows how to sail, but not a galleon/medieval-style ship. That aside, one of her character flaws are that Verity feels as if she is above some of the crew on boards the Dawn Treader.

— Verity's name derives from the Latin Feminine noun veritas, meaning 'truth'. Verity values her namesake, but as well as hating lying, she also is brutally honest. This means that people often find her honesty an issue.
