Chapter 4: Sonic.

The next morning you arrived at school early for training, you not needing to change into your uniform as you jogged to school in your sports wear and kept your uniform in your gym bag.

You wore black shorts and a white fitting t-shirt that had the Karasuno high logo written across the right side. You dropped your belongings in the girls locker room and walked into the empty corridors, happily making your way to the track field.

You reached the door to exit the school building and pushed it open, the wooden material bumping harshly into something on the other side.

Your eyes widened and you peered around the door with an apology already leaving your mouth.

"Oh m- I'm so sorry!" You panicked but jolted to a stop when deep blue eyes locked on to you with a dagger like glare and you took a step backwards which made the door shut with the person on the other side.

When the door reopened it allowed the boy to come into full view, his tall figure easily reaching around 6 foot. You were in a state of panic but a familiar feeling of nostalgia made it all go away when you clicked onto who it was.

"Kageyama?" Your voice was high and questioning, the blacked haired boy tilting his head but your recognisable voice hit him like a truck. He looked you up and down as you looked a lot different from middle school, him trying to take it all in which made you nervous as he took a while to respond.

"Where did you go?"

"What?" You replied confused.

"You said you'd be back, but you never did." He didn't take his galaxy blue eyes from you. He was still trying to comprehend how different and.. well, attractive you looked.

You looked down at your feet. "My dad wouldn't let me. I'm sorry Kageyama." You bit the inside of your cheek. "I would've gotten in contact but I didn't have your number."

"It's fine." He mumbled.

"So.. how have you been?" You smiled up at him. You couldn't believe how much he'd changed, he was a lot taller for starters, you barely reaching his shoulder height. His hair had grew longer and his athletic build had definitely developed, not to mention his appearance.

"I have to get to volleyball practice." He said blatantly, his monotonous words like a stab to the heart.

"Oh okay." You fiddled with your fingers. "Can we meet up at lunch or som-"

You were half way through speaking before he turned and walked away, you just awkwardly stood there, glancing around and fiddling with your fingers.

"Well that hurt." You mumbled to yourself before heading to the track field.

Kageyama paced to the volleyball gym with pinched eyebrows, keeping his eyes trained to the floor. You were the only friend he'd made in middle school since nobody else bothered, but you left against his control and now you'd shown up nearly three years later. It was a lot to take in, especially since you looked a lot different.

You got to the track field and most of the team already there, again giving you a warm greeting which cheered you up a bit. Everyone started with jogging around the track as a warm up but your mind fogged with the look of shock and hurt on Kageyama's face when you were both reunited.

It hurt that he didn't want to speak to you, but you understood why he was upset. You were both each other's only friend in middle school, basically spending most of your free time in school together, talking about wonders and future plans and desires.

Then you just left.

You knew it wasn't your say whether you could stay or not, but your dad worried for your safety with Rini making your life hell, not to mention your shitty home life. He knew a new school would be a good, fresh start.

You just had to leave behind the one thing that you never wanted to change.

"Hey! Sonic!" Mira joked as she noticed you speeding up as your overthinking took over, but her voice snapped you back to reality. You stopped and walked over to the group where Elanie began to explain what everyone was gonna do for the practice session.

When the rest of the girls went to practice burst sprinting, Elanie called you over.

"Hey, Sonic, can you come here a sec?"

"Is that my new nickname?" You chuckled and Mira nodded. Well it's better than my old one..

"Yep." Elanie grinned. "Anyway, we wanna have a practice relay with you in the team and record our score."

On the official girls team was Elanie, Mira and another girl named Kim who was a second year.

"We need a new official runner since our old captain who was on the team has just left, and your time isn't far off hers already." Mira explained.

"What was her time?" You questioned curiously.

"12.5 or 12.6 seconds, something around that." Elanie said. "She was our best runner."

"That's so good." You huffed, wishing you could run as fast as that.

"Well so are you, you're faster than both me and Mira and you're a first year. Must be natural talent." Elanie shrugged.

"She's not that much faster." Mira pouted and crossed her arms over her chest.

"Shut up." Elanie nudged her rib with a chuckle, then turning back to you. "So do you wanna give it a shot?"

"Yeah sure, why not." You beamed.

You tied your hair swiftly out of your face and jogged over to the last position.

They decided that the order would go: Mira, Kim, Elanie and then you last. It was a 400m relay so everyone would run 100m each.

Another one of the girls blew the whistle and Mira began sprinting with the metal baton in her hand, then passing it to Kim who continued running with it. Then it was passed to Elanie and you waited for her to pass it to you.

The pass over of the baton wasn't the smoothest but as soon as it was tightly gripped in your palm you bolted to the finish line.

The stopwatch read 52.8 seconds.

"Hey that was pretty good." Elanie jogged over to you. "The hand over was pretty sloppy but you made it up."

"Okay." You exhaled.

"We'll work on it after school." She smiled and you nodded in agreement.

She checked the time and raised her hand in the air with a circling motion. "Alright ladies, wrap it up!" She shouted.

You grabbed your water bottle and left the track field, walking back to the locker room. On the way you noticed the volleyball gym door open slightly, the squeaking of shoes and echoes of balls hitting the wooden floor getting louder as you got closer.

You walked up the two small steps and peaked around the side of the door, four boys in there. A small, ginger boy with wild hair, a boy with a buzz cut and another with silky white hair.

And Kageyama.

You observed in admiration as he tossed the ball into the air and ran at it, jumping up and slamming it to the other side of the net effortlessly.

He had improved a lot since middle school, you remembering the times at lunch where he'd attempt to do jump serves but it would end up hitting him in the face or completely missing.

You chuckled privately at the thought, reminiscing on the memory which made you miss him even more. And now he's right in front of you, but didn't seem the slightest bit interested after you recent encounter.

"Sonic! Are you coming or what?!" Mira yelled as she was heading to the locker room with the rest of the girls.

"Uh.. yeah!" You replied, taking a quick glance at Kageyama again before prodding over to the team.

The first few lessons went by and lunch soon came around, you going for a wander around school to use up your time.

You came across a row of vending machines outside, scanning through the options. You went to pull some change out of your F/C backpack but was distracted when a tall, black haired boy had started walking towards the vending machine.

"Oh, Uh.. Hi Kageyama." You greeted softly, awkwardly glancing to him as you put your bag back on your back.

"Hey." He mumbled, peering away. "I, um. Gotta go."

"Oh." You sighed. "Alright." You furrowed your eyebrows, noticing he had loose change in his hands and before he noticed you, he was heading for the vending machine, but now he'd turned to leave.

You quickly slipped your coins into the machine and pressed the button for a milk carton. It dropped down to the bottom and you swiftly grabbed it, sprinting in the direction Kageyama left in.

You shortly caught up, slowing down behind him.

"Kageyama!" You shouted out loud, but not extremely loud, just loud enough for him to acknowledge that you were there.

He turned around and you had your arms held out forward, the milk carton gripped in your palms and your eyes squeezed shut with your H/C hair gently hanging down the sides of your face.

"Wha-"

"I don't want you to avoid me." You squeaked out. "I know you're mad at me because I had to move school, but I promise I had no say in the matter." You explained in a rush. "I would've stayed with you if I could."

"I-" Kageyama hesitated, no speech leaving his mouth.

"I did miss you a lot." You mumbled, your voice like silk.

You're eyes stayed glued shut, the cardboard material of the milk carton still encased within your fingers.

He eventually replied quietly. "I missed you too."

Your eyes sprung open and locked with his deep navy ones. You scrunched your nose.

"So.. why have you seemed really distant." You bit the inside of your cheek. "Like you didn't want anything to do with me."

"I.. I don't know." He shrugged. "I just saw you again and panicked."

"Panicked about what?" You dropped your arms by your sides.

"That I'd..." He huffed and averted his eyes. "That I'd get attached and get hurt again if you left."

You offered the milk to him again, out stretching your arm in front of you.

"I'm not going anywhere."

He nodded slowly, looking you up and down.

"Okay."

"So can we be friends again. Like we used to be?" You smiled up at him.

"Yeah.. sure." He agreed.

"Okay good.. can you please take the milk because my arm hurts." You laughed sweetly and he chuckled, taking the carton from your palm that was still hovering out in front of you.
