Chapter 1: Chubs.
You walked down the corridor with your head held high, a pearly smile on your cheeks as you kept pace with your best friend, Rini Anya. It was both your first day of middle school at Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High, a childlike innocence lighting excitement over the next step towards maturity.
Your palms clung onto the straps of your oversized backpack that decorated the fabric with a neon green and pale pink flowering pattern, mini keychains dangling from the front zips and rattling together over each step.
You glanced over to Rini through the massive glasses that were clearly too big for your face, the rims being a translucent white. Rini walked with a delicate stride that made her elegance elevate the room, her bouncy black hair being tossed over her shoulder with a flick of her fingers.
It amazed you actually. How this girl that you'd grown up with looked like an absolute goddess and matured quicker than anyone in your grade, even most of the third years, while you were there with a slapped face full of acne and you considered your body to be more marshmallow shaped rather than the tall, slim, athletic build that Rini embraced. She took after her older sister who was a model for an American clothing brand, Rini having a complete glow up when she visited her over the summer. You on the other hand sat in your room eating ramen and binge watching Netflix shows while your parents argued non stop with one another, you muffling the sounds of their yelling and screaming with your earbuds.
Rini sent flawless smiles at people passing by as you waddled quickly behind her to keep up, her long legs making your life difficult, but you didn't mind. It reminded you of the stereotypical school movies where the gorgeous, popular girl dramatically did an unnecessary runway down the hall and everyone's heads turn to them. But usually those characters were bitches and saw everyone else as dirt, and you knew Rini wasn't like that so you had no reason to worry.

You had no reason to worry.
A few weeks had passed and you and Rini had gotten used to the middle school atmosphere, both of you eating lunch together in the cafeteria.
"I was watching this movie on Netflix the other day about a girl who wrote letters to all of her crushes and-" you were rambling excitedly until you got cut off, Rini bored of the conversation.
"Uh, yeah cool, anyway have you seen that 3rd year, Oikawa?" She rested her chin on her hand, pointing her manicured finger across the room. You turning around to take a look at the brown haired boy, his handsome features making your heart thud. "Isn't he hot." She bit her bottom lip as she dropped her hand, gawking at the tall male.
"Yeah sure." You smiled. "Have you spoke to him?"
"Nope." She popped the 'p' and stood up. "But I am now." She said confidently, strutting across the room like it was natural to her.
"Good luck." You mumbled, taking a bite out of a rice ball you'd packed in your bento box.
She came back a few minutes later with a giggly smirk on her face, her smooth skin covered with a honey glow on her cheeks.
"What did he say-"
"He called me beautiful!" She squealed giddily. "And he asked for my number!"
"That's awesome!" You cheered for her. "Do you want a chocolate bar?" You pulled one out of your bag to hand it to her.
"What? No!" She slapped it out of your hand onto the table, you shrugging and opening it to eat yourself. "Anyway, I'm going to walk home with him today so you'll have to walk alone."
"Oh alright." You forced a small smile. "Is it just for today? Or-"
"No it'll probably be everyday now, sorry."
"Okay.." you bit the inside of your cheek. "Are we still joining the track team?"
She snickered slightly and briefly glanced away, and then back to you. "Uh, yeah I am, but are you sure you want to?" She looked you up and down.
"Yeah!" You beamed enthusiastically. "Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, right?"
"Uh.. y- no it's Tuesdays and Fridays." She corrected.
"Okay! I'll be there."

You and Rini had changed into the sports kit that the school provided for every student, you once again following after Rini like a lost puppy.
You arrived at the track that covered most of the sports field, the team already waiting there. The first years were introduced and then you were told to start warming up.
You started jogging on the track and instantly Rini sprinted off with the other girls like she knew them, you attempting to run at the same speed but you simply weren't capable. After about 5 minutes you had to stop, the thriving sun blaring down on your now sweaty skin and you heaved, resting your hands on your thighs. The rest of the team had done another lap and passed you again but Rini slowed down and stood in front of you, looking down at you with an expression that read mild disgust.
"I knew you wouldn't be able to do this." She rolled her eyes. "You've just embarrassed yourself."
"Get off the track, chubs!" Another girl on the team bolted by, yelling a nickname at you. You furrowed your eyebrows and looked up at Rini, expecting a sympathetic glimmer in her eyes but all you saw was her trying to fight a chuckle from her new teammates comment.
You bit the inside of your cheek and mumbled a small 'sorry' before trudging over to a bench. You grabbed your water bottle and aimed back to the locker room.
On your way you were cut off by the volleyball team passing by and making their way to the gym, you swerving around them nervously since all of them were miles taller than you, them easily being near 6ft and you being a tiny 4"9ft.
"Hold up." You heard the squeaking of shoes stopping in unison when a male voice spoke out and someone grabbed your arm. Oikawa, Rini's new boy toy had stopped you in place. "You're Rini's friend, aren't you?"
You nodded, wondering why they were already on a first name bases already but you shrugged it off.
"Well, I'm Oikawa." He smiled brightly at you with a cute peace sign, his introduction making your nose and cheeks burn pink, which he noticed. "You're chubs, right?"
"Chubs?" You pinched your eyebrows together in offence at the name.
"That's what Rini called you." He smirked, looking down at you.
"W-well my name is Y/N L-L/N." You huffed, covering your arms over your chest uncomfortably, coming to the conclusion that you were out of place in the group of boys with unbelievably athletic builds for people aged 12-14.
"I think chubs suits you more." He grinned kindly, his words making you want to cry as some of his teammates chuckled with one another.
"W-well, I -I." You didn't know what to say as your bottom lip quivered.
"I think-" abruptly, Oikawa got a rough smack to the back of his head, a boy with dark, spiked-up hair and thin eyebrows holding a pissed off expression the cause of it.
"Ow! Iwa-chan!" Oikawa cried out, holding the back of his head.
"All of you." Iwaizumi growled. "Move along now." He bit, all of the boys listening to him and heading to the gym, Iwaizumi sending you an apologetic glance before walking away.
You ran into the girls locker room and changed back to your school uniform, tears streaming from your eyes the entire time. You threw on your backpack and stormed out of the room, the door swinging open and hitting someone on the other side.
"O-Oh my god! I'm so sorry!" You sniffled, glancing around the door and saw a tall, black haired boy with a fringe that hung shortly above his dark blue eyes, a sharp glare making you take a step backwards.
He rubbed his arm and then dropped his hands to his sides, not saying anything.
"Are you okay?" You said softly. "I didn't mean to."
"Why are you crying?" He noticed your wet and swollen eyes, you quickly wiping away the tears that were resting on and under your eye lids.
"I'm not." You smiled brightly and extremely fake. You noticed his clothing, it being of the volleyball clubs.
"Yes you are?" He tilted his head. "Are you okay?"
"Mhm." You hummed, nodding, biting your bottom lip and looking away when the salty tears brimmed your E/C eyes again. "I-I'm sorry for hitting you with the door."
"It's fine." He nodded with a bland expression. "Are you a first year?"
"Yeah.. are you?" You replied and he nodded. "What's your name?" You wiped the tears again and looked up at him, you realising that he's extremely tall for a 12 year old.
"Kageyama Tobio." He said. "You?"
"Y/N L/N." You fiddled with your fingers. You both stayed quiet for a few seconds until you continued. "Can we be friends?"
"Uh.." he hesitated, simply because he'd never thought about having a friend before. "Sure?"
"We don't have to be if you don't want to-"
"Yes, we can be friends."
"Okay.. cool!" You beamed with a closed eye smile. "I'll see you around, Kageyama!" You waved and prodded away.
"See ya." He walked the opposite direction, to his volleyball practice.

When you got home neither of your parents were there and the entire house was silent, and when your phone vibrated in your hand it scared the shit out of you.
Rini: Wow thanks for ditching me.
You: I thought you were walking home with Oikawa.
Rini: I did, but you still didn't need to ditch me like that.
You: I'm really sorry, Rini.
Rini: whatever, Chubs.
