23 - a dangerous try

Neither of them had any reason to hide, yet Edith pulled her dark coat tighter around her body and looked around cautiously.

Aegon had left a message for the family that the two were going for a walk and to buy pastries in town. Still, Edith feared that the city watch or someone from the royal family itself could be standing in front of them at any moment, dragging them back to the Red Keep.

Before they had left the Red Keep, both had grabbed their cloaks so that the two would not be immediately recognized as the prince and princess. But Aegon's silver hair made the hiding game rather difficult, and it didn't seem to bother him a bit.

He was the prince and to many, Aegon was the heir to the throne, not his older sister Rhaenyra. He would never admit it in front of Edith, but secretly he enjoyed the approval of some subjects and their awed looks. He skillfully ignored the evil glances and whispers.

Some bowed to the king's eldest son, others just looked pityingly at the young woman with him. They surely thought Edith was just another of his mistresses and not the princess and his sister-in-law.

Except for selected people, hardly anyone had caught sight of Edith from the capital. She had grown up elsewhere and even after her arrival and even after her marriage to Aemond, she had spent most of her time behind the dark walls. And so hardly anyone knew what the firstborn daughter of Prince Daemon really looked like. All that was known was that she had not inherited the silver hair and had been accepted only a few weeks ago, becoming the heiress of Dragonstone.

Arriving at the dragon pit, a dragon keeper came right up to the newcomers, but when Aegon took off his hood, the man backed away after bowing.

"Lock the doors and let no one in, keeper." Aegon ordered the older man, who had lowered his head. "Not even a dragon keeper." He added. The older man let the two inside and then locked the heavy doors again, as he was ordered to do.

Edith remembered the first time she descended into the darkness. Back then, her father and sisters had been with her and they had all shared a special moment together.

The second time she had descended alone, she had bumped into Aemond. He had been caring for a pregnant dragon and somehow it had happened that Edith had helped him.

Both of these things seemed so infinitely long ago to her, as so much had happened. But in reality, she had only been here a moon.

"What are you thinking about?" Aegon's voice echoed off the walls as he took a torch and lit it to give the two light, as the corridors were quite dark.

"About the dragons." She answered him in her soft voice. Carefully she stroked the fabric where the dragon egg was lying, which she hid under her cloak.

"Are you afraid?"

Edith shook her head at his question. She was a Targaryen, no Targaryen was afraid of dragons. They were like the kind of family you didn't have, but wished you did.

"They are so fascinating, don't you think? They live with us and around us, and yet they could fly away at any time." The young woman said dreamily, sounding almost like Princess Helaena.

"They are bound to us. They will not fly away." Aegon reminded her and put his free hand on her back.

Except for their voices and footsteps, nothing could be heard. Only when they passed the first nest they could also hear the movements of the first dragon.

The blue dragon moved its long neck only enough to examine the two visitors with its large eyes, looking sleepy and dreamy. There was little doubt that this was Dreamfyre, the dragon of Helaena.

"But they could fly away at any time. They have a chance to break out at any time." She reflected thoughtfully.

Aegon immediately understood the real meaning behind her words, as he knew how caged she must feel. She had to leave her family twice, was forced into a marriage and did not have any freedom. Of course she wanted to get away from here, even if the thought pained him.

"Do you think our dragons feel trapped with us?" he wanted to know from her and he asked her, as she had also done, another question hidden. Aegon looked stubbornly at the ground as the two walked on, unable to look at her as he knew that answer as well.

Rainfyre had his nest just a few feet away. The two dragons had been created from the same litter, only the dark dragon with the poisonous green eyes had been made to hatch years later.

"I've never felt the bond with a dragon of my own, but hopefully I will be able to someday..." she began softly as she briefly eyed Daeron's dragon as the two passed him. "...I really hope that bonding with us will make them feel at home and not trapped."

Edith not only knew Rainfyre, She knew Myrax as well. The old dragoness had still been in pain when they met, and had even hurt Edith and Aemond when the two tried to help her. Neither of them had been badly hurt and they abrasions on her back had already healed and were no longer visible.

Now, like the other dragons, she was lying asleep and did not let the two Targaryens disturb her.

She couldn't help thinking about Myrax's eggs, because she had never been able to ask Aemond about them. Had the dragoness laid eggs? Were they heal and ready to hatch? Edith didn't know, though she was very interested.

"And our connection?" the eldest prince asked cautiously.

A smile tugged at her curved lips as she reached for his hand and squeezed it tightly. "I am grateful for our connection, Aegon." She couldn't give him a better answer. She was truly grateful for the connection and friendship with him, but still Aegon couldn't take away the feeling of not being trapped.

The last dragon in the pit was Aegon's. Of all four down here, Sunfyre was the largest. The golden dragon looked as majestic as only a dragon could, and thus looked like the opposite of his rider, for Aegon rarely looked like a prince.

His silver hair always fell messily over his shoulders and he also rarely buttoned his shirts completely unless it was a public gathering. His boots were also not as shiny as his younger brother Daeron's and he also almost never carried a weapon or a sword like his brother Aemond. Aegon was so different from his brothers, as he lived each morning into the day without a plan or a goal. Almost like his sister Helaena.

Her answer seemed to soothe him for the time being and the two remained silent until they arrived at an empty cave. There was some straw on the floor and in the middle was a large round stone table with a bowl on it.

Edith watched as Aegon put the torch into a holder on the table, then he went to the wall and took some wood and some of the straw. He put everything in the bowl with the stones and lit what he had gathered with the fire of the torch.

"What are you doing?" she asked him curiously.

She had read of many different ways to make a dragon hatch, but she had never heard it done the way Aegon prepared everything.

"Aegon the Conqueror designed and made this table for his first sister consort. It's a convenient way to break the egg. Sunfyre and the others hatched in here too." He explained to her, pointing to the large Targaryen symbol on the lid of the shell. "Not every Targaryen walks through fire for this." Aegon added more wood to the fire and winked at her.

"I walked through fire." Edith reminded him of last night.

Somehow they had both managed to block out what had happened so far, but it would always remain a big deal what Edith had done. At least until they caught the incendiary and put his head on a spike in front of the city gates.

Ideally, the young woman would like to put the offender there herself. He or she had taken so much from her in just one night.

"I know. I'll never forget that." Aegon leaned against the table and ran his hand through his shaggy hair as he watched her.

Edith removed the cloth from her dragon egg. She missed her shiny colors, which it once had and had given her so much hope. Now it was black from the fire and had a minimal crack on the top.

"And yet it didn't hatch...that scares me a little." She sighed as she placed the egg in the flames. As yesterday, she felt no pain as the flames touched her skin.

Aegon put more wood in the bowl as the egg lay so the stones would get even hotter, then he took the lid and closed the bowl. The dragon egg was now trapped in the heat of the flames.

"The fire must not have been hot enough or it was too short, I think. At least there was a small crack." Encouragingly, he smiled at her and blew a kiss on her forehead before taking her hand and leading her to the wall. Aegon sat down on the floor and leaned his back against the cold stones, listening to the sounds of the fire.

Edith also sat down on the floor and as if automatically, Aegon put his arm around her so that she had to lean against him, but this was no problem for either of them.

"You're right... I just have no patience and I'm so curious." Again she sighed as she rested her head on his shoulder. "What are we doing for so long, Aegon? This could take hours."

"I can think of something..." the prince smirked cheekily, looking down at her into her beautiful blue violet eyes.

"Even something that isn't dirty?" she asked with a laugh on her lips when she saw his smirk and gaze.

"I don't know what you're thinking, but I know I'd really like to kiss you right now."

"Then kiss me!" the young woman wanted to answer, but she barely managed to pronounce the first two words when Aegon also put his lips on hers.

It was a tender and careful kiss, almost the same as the first kiss the two had shared.

Edith turned her upper body more in his direction and leaned against him, the kiss turned from cautious to passionate and it didn't take long for Aegon to stroke her lower lip with his tongue to make her open her mouth.

Of course she opened her mouth and let his tongue play with her own while Aegon wrapped his arms tightly around her and she finally sat down on his lap.

It led one thing to another until after a few minutes of making out, Edith played with Aegon's pants and she pulled them down with his help. Lifting her own skirt, she sat back down on his lap.

An impatient sound escaped him as he felt his cock against her bare skin, which was getting wetter and wetter. One of Aegon's hands went under her skirt and two of his fingers gently stroked her vulva, his eyes fixed firmly on her face so he wouldn't miss any reaction. First one finger went inside her and then two as she seemed ready.

Edith's mouth opened automatically and her muscles tensed, and not just in her thighs. "Aegon please." She breathed to him lustfully. The arousal was already almost unbearable for her and she could see just from his face that he felt the same way.

Aegon pulled his fingers out of her and then put them in his mouth to lick them off.

It was something Edith had never seen before and never thought possible. To be honest she had never thought about something like that, but watching Aegon lick her off his fingers made her blush and somehow she liked it.

She couldn't avoid it and had to think about Aemond and compared the two of them for a second. Her husband had never done anything like that and he had never licked her, as Aegon had already done once.

Suddenly she felt Aegon's warm hands all over her body. She felt him through the long sleeves on her arms, on her butt and on her bare thighs up to her knee socks. Her hands were not idle either, gently stroking his body and beneath his clothes, her lips resting continuously on his.

"Damn."

There was no end to the wild smooching, and Edith finally put a hand around his cock self-consciously. However, she moved her hand around it almost shyly, massaging it lightly until she lifted her hips, positioned herself properly, and sat on top of him.

Pleasurable moans escaped both of them as Aegon entered her, and Edith closed her eyes when he was all the way inside her.

It was the first time the two were this close and already they both knew that this would not be the last time.

After Edith got used to his length, she began to slowly move her hips up and down while Aegon's hands were on her hips, gently guiding and supporting her.

Fortunately, Aegon had told the guard not to let anyone else in, so they were alone down here. Otherwise, everyone would have heard the moaning of the two, which literally resounded from the old stone walls.

With her hands she held on to his shoulders to have more support for her movements. While his hands either stroked her plump ass or held her by her hips to help her with the right pace.

As Edith's legs began to shake the two switched positions, gently grabbing her and laying her on her back as he leaned over her and thrust into her again and again.

"Oh my God, Aegon!" escaped Edith with a heavy moan, but there was a satisfied smile on her lips and her fingers clawed into his silver hair while he, on the other hand, placed his free hand between her legs and applied gentle pressure with his fingers.

Aegon returned her moan only too gladly, for what he was experiencing and feeling right now was something he had never felt in his life. No woman was comparable to Edith, but he already knew that before he had thrust into her.

Space and time lost meaning and now no one thought of the flaming dragon's egg as both surrendered to their feelings and first she and then he reached a climax.

Closely entwined, the two lay on the cold floor for a moment, but the cold didn't bother them, because they were more than just warm.

"That was..."

"Indescribable." He finished her sentence and spread light kisses all over her face, making her laugh.

"Stop that! Aegon!" she laughed, trying to push him off her as she turned her head away to escape him, but of course that didn't work until he himself decided enough was enough and he slowly stood up.

Edith pulled her stockings back over her knees and straightened her underskirt before pushing the green skirt back down and standing up. Aegon did the same and put his clothes back on neatly, purposely leaving the top strings of his shirt open. When Edith noticed this she had to grin and put her arms around his neck.

"Stop looking so good." She ordered him and gently nudged him with her nose against his own.

In love, he looked at the woman he now had his arms around. "I should tell you." He replied with a cheeky grin, letting go of her and kneeling in front of her to neatly smooth her green skirt. As he did so, he looked up at her innocently.

Edith's legs almost went weak at the sight and she had to pull herself together not to give in to him again so quickly, her legs still shaking a bit from their recent experience. "Please get back up."

"Or what?" he asked impatiently, running his hand over her right leg.

"Or I'll probably rip your clothes off." She put both hands around his hands that were on her leg and had to grin as well.

"That's not a threat to me, my love." Laughed Aegon, but stood up anyway.

For a brief moment, she then placed her lips on his before turning back to the reason for their presence here in the dragon pit. Edith turned to the table with the burning egg in the bowl.

"Do you think anything has happened there yet?" She didn't know exactly how long the two had been doing what they had been doing, and yet she hoped that the time and temperature had been enough to help the dragon egg.

"Hard to say." Aegon shrugged his shoulders, as he too had lost track of time down here.

Without putting on gloves, Aegon reached for the lid and opened the bowl. Fire still blazed strongly under the table and anyone else would have been badly burned just by touching it, but not a Targaryen did. Aegon did not hurt himself and neither did Edith as she reached into the flames and hot stones for the egg.

The black-stained egg not only looked changed, it was broken.

The young woman grabbed first one part of the eggshell, then the next, and placed them both on the free tabletop. She repeated this until she had all the pieces, her heart beating rapidly mouth loud against her chest.

The smoke quickly disappeared and Edith's curious look turned to one of concern when she couldn't see a baby dragon. Nervously, she now also took the hot stones and the remains of the wood from the bowl of the table until it was empty.

"Where is he?"

Aegon now became nervous as well and stroked a piece of the dragon egg shell. Even as he caught his first glimpse, he realized something terrible. But the worst part was actually that he didn't know how to tell her.

"Edith..." he began softly, putting his free hand on her shoulder. "...I'm sorry."

"No, that's not true, Aegon." Desperately, she shook her head. Her hands were black from the Rust and the smoke, but still she didn't feel the pain she somehow hoped for.

Instead, her heart ached, her stomach ached, and everything else about her body ached, and especially her head ached.

The table remained empty just like the shell of the egg. There was no dragon anywhere to be seen and slowly she realized that there must never have been a dragon in the egg.

"That's not fair. It should have been my own dragon." She said softly and you could clearly hear her disappointment.

Edith still remained dragonless. Not only was she a Targaryen without a dragon, she was a daughter without a dragon. Her father's gift was now gone by the flames, though it had been empty from the beginning.

It had been the last thing she had from her family and that too was now gone.

She couldn't help but wonder if Daemon had known there was no dragon in the egg. At the same time, she wondered if her sister Rhaena's egg or her baby brother Viserys' egg had already hatched. Or had their eggs also remained empty?

Questions upon questions and she knew even less if she would ever get an answer to them.

"It won't have been your last chance to have a dragon. I promise you that, my love." He breathed into her ear and took her in his arms. "I will give you a dragon of your own. Not long now, and we'll fly away from here together."

Edith looked into his violet eyes and saw the truth in his words. She believed him, but the pain in her chest would not subside, yet she did not shed a tear at that moment. She swallowed everything and leaned her head against his shoulder, already thinking about all her options and her next steps.

For once, she forgot that someone was after her.

But the worst thing in this situation was that someone was with them in the dragon pit and had seen and heard everything.
