CHARLIE HAD NOT LEFT HER HOUSE IN TWO WEEKS. Matt, who was now the technical owner of her house so that vampires could not barge in, had just been sliding blood bags and saltines to her under the door to her room and giving her updates about what was happening. Elena had turned off her humanity, which was the biggest thing.
She made no movement to get up or see who it was when her door burst open one day. She felt someone lift her covers, and a second later, she was dumped onto the floor. Instead of making any noise, she just remained there limply, staring up at the ceiling. She heard Stefan's voice, the same one that had delivered the bad news to her, say, "Charlie, you have to get up."
"Why?" she groaned, and it had been the first word to come out of her mouth in days.
"Because this is not healthy," he informed her, and she saw his face appear above her as she leaned over her. She stared at him blankly. "Look, I know you're upset, but you have to get up and do something. Get your mind off it."
She shook her head. "I'm actually perfectly fine down here. Blood and saltines are actually really good together. It's all I need in life. Now, if you would excuse me, I would like to get back to my sulking."
"Okay, let's go." He grabbed her legs and dragged her basically kicking and screaming out of the room, down the stairs, past a very confused Matt, out the door, and into his car. She groaned and took a bite out of a saltine that she had snagged on her way out. When he saw that she had it, he snatched it from her and threw it out the window, much to her dismay.
She trudged behind him angrily into his house where Caroline was sitting on the couch with Klaus standing in front of her. She was saying to him, "Oh I can, and I do. Now if you don't mind, I'd like to get back to spiraling, so go away."
"Actually, I asked him to be here. We need his help. I think Silas is in Mystic Falls," Stefan breathed out, causing everyone in the room to turn to him in complete and utter shock.
Caroline's attention shifted to her best friend when she saw her enter in his pajamas with her hair falling out of a bun. She breathed out a sigh of relief and rushed over to hug her. "Oh, thank God. I thought you had drowned in blood and crackers."
"Well, I'm here unfortunately," she murmured, hugging her back. She had to admit that the embrace felt nice after the only human contact she had had for weeks was through a thick door.
"So some blood went missing from a few hospitals," Klaus sighed as they sat at a table later. He poured himself a drink and took a sip. "What about Elena? Don't vampires with their humanity off tend to overindulge in human blood, or were you the exception?"
He looked at Stefan, reminding him of his Ripper days where he tore apart thousands of innocent people and put them back together, rightfully earning him the nickname. "It's not Elena."
"Well, let's say for a moment that it was Silas. I'm struggling to see how this affects me," the Mikaelson responded. He was an Original, and Silas had no reason to hate him. He would be completely fine if the millenniums old vampire was in town.
"Look," the Salvatore man said, leaning forward and looking the man in the eye to let him know that this was a serious problem. "Silas wants to die and be reunited with his one true love, but he's supernatural, so if he takes the cure and dies, he gets stuck on the Other Side. But if he destroys the Other Side altogether, he can take the cure, die, and pass on, but in destroying it, every dead supernatural being will return to our side."
Caroline continued explaining. She was sitting next to her best friend, who was banging her head against the table. "That means every werewolf, every witch, every vampire. I wonder how many of those you personally killed. Care yet?"
"My interest is piqued. How do we stop him?" he quizzed.
"Bonnie said Silas needs to complete three massacres to do this spell. Before Professor Shane died, he convinced the pastor to blow up the Council," Stefan explained, and he grabbed the brunette girl's arm before she could stab herself with a pen. "Next, he had you kill your hybrids, and now he only needs one more massacre, so if he's here, that's what he's doing. We need to find him."
That night, the four of them broke into Professor Shane's office and were looking through his stuff for clues about where Silas was or what he was up to and why he was in town. As she searched a file cabinet alongside the Lockwood girl, Caroline questioned, "What are we even looking for?"
"Well, if Shane really was working with Silas, chances are he was helping him plan his next move," Charlie responded, and everyone was kind of shocked that she had spoken and that she had even been paying attention that whole time. They kind of thought she was just some zombie that was following them around and doing what they told her to.
"Where, on his evil villain to-do list?" the blonde joked, and Charlie smiled for the first time in a while. The blonde lowered her voice to one that sounded kind of like Batman. "'Steal blood, perform 3 massacres, pick up dry cleaning'?"
Then, the Mikaelson man cut in, thinking he was funny and trying to make a joke in response to the Forbes girl's one. "Actually, not to nit-pick, but we evil villains usually use minions to pick up our dry cleaning, that sort of thing."
"You're not funny," the brunette told him, and he frowned, pouting and tilting his head. She furrowed her eyebrows, confused, but then she decided that she really did not give a crap and went back to searching.
Caroline turned to Stefan with raised eyebrows. "Why is he necessary again?"
"Well, we don't know what Silas can do, so if we do have to go head to head with him, an Original hybrid who can't die might come in handy," the Salvatore man responded with a sigh. He did not seem happy about it either, but he was somehow putting up with the man.
Klaus smirked with a shrug, again bringing the younger vampire back to his dark moments in the previous century, when he was the bloodthirsty monster with his humanity turned off. "Besides, Stefan and I work well together, or at least we did in the twenties."
"Well, granted my emotions were off," he reminded him, implying that the only way he could stand the Original was when he could not feel annoyance or anger or depression. That was how he put up with him when he had to be his minion in return for the werewolf bite cure for Damon.
Klaus smirked, knowing exactly how to get him back. "And that's why you were more fun, just as Damon is probably relishing in Elena's emotionless company in New York."
"My brother knows what he's doing," Stefan insisted, trying to convince himself that Damon was actively trying to help Elena and that they were not just being all sexy and vampirey all over New York. They had to be doing something purposeful.
"Does he? Don't underestimate the allure of darkness, Stefan. Even the purest hearts are drawn to it," the Mikaelson said, and Caroline looked up from her searching. Judging by the look on her face, she was affected by his words, which was confusing. "Still, I'm sure it'll all be fine."
Caroline grabbed some books and carried them over to the desk. "I think I found something. 'Symbolic Figures in the Dark Arts.' Didn't Bonnie talk about Expression Triangles? Here." She pointed at a large, intricate drawing of a triangle.
"'In some schools of magic such as Expression, human sacrifice can be used as a focus for power. It is rumored that the addition of two supernatural sacrifices compounds the mystical energy, creating an Expression Triangle,'" Stefan read from the page opposite of the drawing.
Charlie, pointing at different symbols across the page. "Human โ that was the council fire. Demons โ Klaus' hybrid failure."
"Oh, no," Caroline gasped, pointing to a symbol that meant witches. Bonnie was going to sacrifice twelve witches to complete the triangle. Stefan left to go find Bonnie, and the other three drew lines with a ruler to try and figure out where the third massacre would take place. "There've been two massacres. Pastor Young's farm is here, and the old Lockwood cellar, where you spitefully slaughtered 12 of your own hybrids, is here. According to the book, the Expression Triangle is equilateral, putting it here."
"Somebody's been skipping their geometry classes," Klaus told her, and he drew a line across a couple of hers, and all of the shapes were confusing Charlie. "There are actually two places where the third massacre could be." He drew two more lines, forming another triangle opposite of Caroline's.
Caroline smiled, which made the Lockwood mad because she did not like that he was making the blonde girl laugh. "Well, you didn't let me finish." They looked at each other for a moment, causing the brunette girl to look between them in disgust. She thanked the Gods when Stefan walked in. "Hey. What's going on? Did you find Bonnie?"
"No, but I talked to her dad. I think I found Silas."
They split up into two groups, Charlie with Stefan and Caroline with Klaus, and each pair went to the two possible spots. The hybrid girl was not a fan of these pairings, but they had worse things to worry about. She and Stefan approached their spot, and she gasped when she saw a circle of witches. There were torches surrounding them. Bonnie was lying on the ground, struggling against another witch and screaming. Her eyes were milky-white and her nose was bleeding.
Yield to the spirits, Bonnie! You can't fight us!" the witch yelled into the air, and both of the vampires sped into the circle after the Lockwood girl had texted her best friend to let her and Klaus know that the witches were there.
Stefan held his hands up, trying to get them to stop before they attacked them for being vampires. Stop! It's not what you think. She's working for Silas. He brainwashed her to kill you." The witch girl pulled out a dagger.
"Wait. What are you doing?" Charlie asked her with a panicked voice as she looked between everything that was happening.
The girl responded, shaking her head in dismay as she watched the girl struggling below her and sighing as she lifted the dagger. "If Silas has her, she's lost. We can't save her."
"Wait." Stefan moved toward Bonnie, but the girl flung out her arm and used a spell to weaken both of the vampires. A pain shot through Charlie's head, and she cried out in pain as she stumbled back and fell to her knees while Stefan did the same.
The witch scoffed at their feeble attempt to stop her. "I have the power of twelve witches. You don't stand a chance!" Stefan grabbed the brunette girl's arm and sped her away from the circle as they backed into a tree and groaned in pain. The witches kept chanting as Klaus and Caroline came running toward them.
"They're linked. Bonnie's gonna kill them," the Salvatore man breathed out.
Klaus shook his head, and he slammed Stefan up against the tree, but the blonde girl grabbed her weakened friend before he could get to her. He was trying to stop them from saving Bonnie so that the massacre could not happen. "Not if the witches kill her first."
"Klaus, we need to save her," Caroline begged. Bonnie was one of her best friends, and she would kill twelve people to save her.
Klaus shook his head, throwing his hands into the air. He was not letting the triangle be complete. "How? The only way to stop the witches is to kill them, and then Silas gets what he wants."
"Spirits, take her soul. Free her from darkness," the witch girl said, and she held the dagger over Bonnie as Bonnie screamed in pain. Suddenly, Caroline vamp-ran into the circle and pulled the dagger into the witch girl's chest, killing her.
Klaus shouted, "No!" They all watched as the witches forming the circle began to drop dead and the torches' flames burned out. Caroline looked around, shocked by what she's done, but then remembered why she did it.
"Bonnie. Bonnie!" she shrieked, shaking the girl as Charlie regained her strength and came jogging over to them. She looked around at all of the dead bodies around her and Klaus's angry face because of what had just happened.
Bonnie opened her eyes, but they were still white as she smiled eerily. "The triangle is complete."
