4°/ Dares and Pledges

So, I wasn't supposed to publish today, but I realised I should have published yesterday since it was Valentines day and I didn't so....

Here😥❤️

~DABI~

My face felt stiff. I couldn't move a muscle.

The girls were all surrounding me, looking at me with so much awe and astonishment, nearly peering their whole faces into mine and creeping the fuck out of me, in the process.

I closed my eyes, imagined their faces weren't so close to mine.

"Do I look bad?" I asked nervously.

"You look AH-MAY-ZING!!!" Soma screamed first, nearly shattering my eardrums, and quickly, the other girls were throwing compliments all over me.

I opened my eyes, looking at all their faces as they gushed. In a way, I was scared to see myself.

Soma did my make up.

She usually did with every party we went to. Although, something about tonight's make up session felt more different. Intense, was the word. My face felt heavier, hotter, slightly itchy too. She also did something to my hair that hurt slightly, I couldn't tell what it was, but when I touched it, it felt greasy and funny, like oiled twists. The black off-shoulder dress the twins had forced me to put on felt tight, skimpy, and very uncomfortable. I wanted to take it off and scratch my body all over.

Soma never went too extra on my party make up or outfit, because I always requested she shouldn't. I honestly wondered what gave her the inspiration to make me go all out this night.

I was scared to look at myself. So so scared.

I flinched, forced my eyes shut the moment I saw the outline of what looked like a pink large mirror, setting to position in front of my face.

"Please, no. Wait, I'm not ready!" I pleaded, shielding myself from it, so as to avoid even looking accidentally at my reflection.

"But, why?" A voice I quickly recognised to be Eberes', asked.

"Bring it down, B. Give her a moment."

That was Chika.

I felt the darkness caused by the shadow of the mirror on my face, clear over, and I knew Ebere had put the mirror away.

I opened my eyesonly  after a few seconds, a part of me wanted to be certain that mirror wasn't in my face anymore.

"You okay?" Soma blinked at me.

I wasn't sure.

I really didn't want to have to go to that party. I wasn't ready to see my classmates yet, the thought of them gave me a maddening, overwhelming anxiety. I really wanted out of that party, but I didn't want to tell my friends that... especially after Soma had spent half an hour, getting me ready and set for it.

I just wished there was a way we could all just cancel and not go for that party.

"Why do we really have to be in Yure's party?" I blurted the question out before I could stop myself.

Soma and the twins nearly had a stroke.

"Jesus," I heard Soma mutter under her breath, shocked by my question.

"Did she just ask that!?" Ebere asked her twin in hushed whisper tones that may have been intended for my hearing.

"Sis, I think she did, no cap!" Ebube replied in the same tone, I instantly wished I didn't speak up.

"That's like asking why you should attend prom!" Ebere was still talking like that, and I could hear every word.

Ebube gasped. "Or worse.. Asking if you should attend your own wedding. Such horror!"

"I think you're over-exaggerating," the words came out of me. Once again, against my will.

"Baby girl, the party IS an exaggeration!" Ebere was nearly screaming at me.

"In human form, no fucking shit!" Ebube came right after, both twins were on fire.

"I think y'all should chill a bit.." Chika was trying to say to them, but Ebere immediately stopped her with a hand.

"Chi Mama, hold on a second, I think we need to elaborate this to Dabi," she said to Chika and the latter gave a fake gesture of surrender and stayed back, leaning smoothly by the wall and watching thereon.

The twins faced me.

"How will we make you understand this? You will never be able to go to another party like this in your life!" Ebere started.

"Till you die! Not a single one!" Ebube followed up.

Extreme.

"Party before the big Ss3," Soma bubbled, clapped in elation. "So exciting. We'll be seeing each other after like three months."

Or we could just wait till Monday, when we resume school.

School... My stomach churned. School, classmates, classmates..

This party will just be another jungle on it's own, a fucking avenue for our judgemental classmates to gather together, compete for vanity, and heighten my social anxiety even more.

"Where do we even start, you know who Yure is, right?" Ebere continued.

"Do you know who Yure Adediji is??" Ebube repeated after her.

I blinked. "Yes."

"Who is he?" Ebere asked.

"Umm.. the School's Headboy?" In a way, they almost made me unsure of my answer.

"True." Ebere nodded.

"Accurate." Ebube quipped after.

"But don't you forget that he is also the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Adediji, the joint owners of Lithex, the second biggest oil company in Africa, the heir to a multi billion earning business!" Ebere was rapping.

"Umm.. umm.. okay..?" I nodded slowly.

"Nigga is a walking bank!" Ebube nearly screamed at me.

Why were they screaming at me..?

"Have you SEEN his house?!" Ebere nearly entered my face as she shouted this, I had to move back, creating distance between our faces.

"I heard his living room is as big as our School Hall," Soma giggled and chipped in.

"Make that two times our School Hall," Ebere corrected her.

That can't be possible.

"Correct," Ebube entered. "Twice the School Hall. Look up his house on Google and confirm."

Wait.. His house is on Google?

"Do you know how many pretty stuff we could pick up from Yure's house?" Ebere was telling me.

"Isn't that stealing?" Soma frowned at the idea.

They turned to her, sparing about a second or two of their time.

"No." Ebube answered Soma.

"We're just taking stuff from his house that we like." Ebere answered bluntly.

"How is that different from stealing?" Soma was more confused.

They completely ignored her.

"Do you know the kind of people that may just drop by at Yure's party?" I looked to Ebere who asked, as soon as the twins faced me again.

I answered honestly. "No."

"Celebrities!" I looked to Ebube who spoke, "It's rumored that Yure Adediji has celeb contacts, some of them may just decide to step into the block."

.. And if no celebrity shows up?

"And let's not forget the pioneer students that are in constant touch with Yure," Ebere went on.

"Let's not even forget those ones!" Ebube repeated, and for God's sake, did she have to second everything her sister said.

"Should I brush up your memory on the ex students of our school who are more of less legends now?" Ebere asked me.

No, please.

"I'm not just talking about the legends from last set that graduated alone. Even the set before them, the set before the set before them, fucking past three sets too sef, will be coming to this party. Now, I'm talking Ola dem geng, Daphne geng, Jimmy geng, even Sochi geng-"

"I get your point." I stopped her, hoping she wouldn't give me a long, unnecessary rundown of all the popular cliques and groups from ALL the past sets that graduated from our school.

"Who knows?" Ebere went on, nontheless. "Maybe Justice Acha and Xander Moe may just decide to show up at the party too."

Chika coughed. "Let's not dream too big, please."

The twins ignored her.

"I heard Giwa Falade is coming too." Ebere said to me, spelling out the name clearly for me.

Okay, I felt that one.

As a matter of fact, on hearing that name, my heart doubled a second, my body suddenly rose at alarm, and the hairs on my skin, stood at attention.

"Yeah, I heard Giwa was coming too," Soma added herself into the conversation.

Giwa Falade was the Queen Bee of our set. Granted, everyone was absolutely terrified of her - including me.

And no, she wasn't a she-male, neither did she have a criminal history or a violence record that frightened my other classmates. As a matter of fact, she had a clean school record, and even cleaner impressive grades...

Giwa Falade was just probably the meanest girl to walk on the surface of the planet. Imagine a girl being so ruthless, so powerful, so fiesty, and in the twins' words too, badass, and somehow, manages to gain so much control over the entire set, to the extent that going against her word, was equivalent to writing a suicide note.

Yeah, imagine that.

Giwa could be like the world's scariest villain or something... but that's the thing, she had no super powers, she was just a regular Highschool kid who could somehow evoke so much fear.... and that made her even scarier.

Well, apparently, Chika loved her.

"That girl is the definition of girl power," she didn't waste time to pass her comment.

The twins may have loved Giwa even more.

"I love me a girl with sass and attitude like Falade!" Ebere basically snapped her fingers into the air as she spoke.

I wasn't sure where Soma stood. The girl basically just shrugged.

"Giwa's cute," she said. "I like her cheeks and I want to squeeze them, but she scares me a little, she may just bite off my fingers if I try."

"Somadina!" Chika laughed out loud, along with the twins. "Giwa Falade is anything, but a cannibal!"

"I'd love to see how good your fingers taste though," Ebube decided to play with Soma, licked her lips and 'hmmed' in mock delight.

Soma gasped, jumped away from the twins who couldn't stop laughing at her reaction.

"Buy you guys, wait wait wait..." Chika got our attention.

"I thought Giwa hated Yure's guts though," She reminded us. "So, why is she coming to his party?"

"Beats me," Ebube shrugged.

"And we all know how hard it is to get Giwa Falade to attend your party. She declines invitations like shit!" Chika said.

"Because most parties are clearly not worth her time, and she's too busy being so badass to give a shit about just anyone. Understandable." As Ebere said this, she looked over her nails like it was totally okay.

"Totally understandable," Ebube repeated. "Who remembers when Miranda Archibong tried to pass out an invitation to Giwa in Ss2?"

Ebere laughed a sick sick laugh. "That major loser," she said, "Did she really think Giwa, of all people, would answer her? The Queen walked out on her and that stupid ass invitation."

"Walked right out on the loser!" Ofcourse, only Ebube was capable of saying that.

"But what was she really thinking, naw?" came Chika. "I mean, everyone knows you'd have to bend, coil, reverse, rumple, and probably break in half for Giwa Falade to accept your party invitation."

So, why is she coming to Yure's party?

"Let's be honest, even Giwa Falade knows that Yure's party will be lit as fuck!" Ebere concluded.

I doubt it, Ebere.

Giwa Falade didn't seem like someone who cared about a lot of things. For one, I doubted she knew half her classmates' names, including me - even if I was in Chika's clique. Infact, I wouldn't be surprised if Giwa was oblivious to the so called "perks" of this Yure's party.

"I know this sounds crazy, but..." Soma started saying, and judging through the excitement in her tone....

"What if Giwa and Yure are falling for each other?"

I backed up, cringing at the possibiliy.

"Mad oo," Chika quipped. "A tale of immature hate turning to intense love," she laughed heartily, "Classic Wattpad shii!"

"Oh, puh-lease!" Ebere nearly screeched. "Yure can singlehandedly mop the entire red sea clean for Giwa, and she wouldn't even bat an eyelid at the guy."

"Wahala for who go date Giwa oo!" Chika's comment nearly had us all on the ground.

These girls' ability to make me smile was always unbeatable. I couldn't believe I was actually laughing.

"I heard these other people from this school are also coming too.." Soma was snapping her fingers to remember the name of the school.

"Maranatha?" Chika helped her.

"Yup! Those guys," Soma said. "They're coming too."

"Oh, God, I hate their girls!" Ebere swore bitterly.

"They're not so bad though," Soma said, "I made some friends last year."

Ebube snorted. "Oh, please."

"My spirit doesn't really go well with their girls too," Chika confessed, "but their boys seem pretty okay."

"Their boys are too proud." Ebere was blunt, and boy, she was one to pass such a judgement.

"Remember that cute guy from Maranatha that liked you," Soma brought it up excitedly.

"Omar." Ebere recalled his name, dryly.

"Yess, yes, him!" Soma sounded too happy for her, was clapping and jumping and shii.

"The fool." Ebere snorted. "Imagine the fool signalling me with his dirty fingers, to come to him. Just imagine the guts. As per, he expected me to stand up and walk to him?"

"Ebere, naw," Soma was saying.

"I hope you passed onn my message to him that night," Ebere looked at her.

"The one where you told me to tell him he could bleeping disintegrate or evaporate into the atmosphere for all you care?" Soma recalled. "No, Ebere, I didn't tell him that."

"Well, you should have." Ebere looked away from her.

"I don't think he did that because he was being too proud though. I think he was just nervous and didn't know how to act and his hands just betrayed him," Soma was lightly defending him.

"Wow, so he's subconsciously a jerk? How nice." Ebere rolled her eyes and I cringed at her bitter sarcasm.

Soma nudged Ebere playfully. "Come on, naw. Don't be like that. He just wanted to talk to you, b."

"He should have stood his ass up and walked over to me then." Ebere responded.

"Ebere!" Soma laughed. "You won't make many friends with that attitude oo."

Ebere scoffed at that, raised a brow at Somadina.

"I don't make friends," she easily said, adjusted her edges like a boss, and simply added, "Friends make me."

"Gimme a five, sis!" Ebube snickered, high giving her twin sister, and both girls laughed at the pun Ebere had made.

Ironic how she was just crucifying a boy for being 'too proud'.

But on a serious note, joking, was what Ebere wasn't doing.

I was made to understand that, as a matter of fact, when the twins came as new students in Jss3, Chika was the one who actually befriended them first, and not the other way around.

"What are they even going to be doing in Yure's party anyway, what connection do they have with him?" Ebere asked no one in particular.

"Probably coming to rub themselves all over our guys again, like they did last year," Ebube rolled her eyes.

"No joke, it's as if they use to blow our boys jazz oo," Chika was laughing.

For real. The way our boys suddenly turned their interest on them, it almost seemed supernatural. Chika was rather laughing about it. Figures, it was a big joke to her, apparently.

"Maybe they know Yure from somewhere," Soma decided, "or they know he has money or something."

"And maybe they like him too." Ebere's comment seemed offpoint to me. I became even more confused when her voice went low as she added, "Can't blame them."

"Yure is a fine boy na," Chika commented casually. "He now has money on top, he's now tall. Abi, that's what y'all would call 'jackpot'."

"I've never seen Chika compliment a boy oo, should this mean something?" Soma started teasing her.

"Oh, please." Chika laughed at that. "Why are y'all so keen on me getting a boyfriend, that will never happen!"

Chika had made that fact crystal clear to us.

Infact, she was certain she wasn't going to get married. She always said she may have a few kids, yes, but marriage wasn't for her. Apparently, she believed that she was strong enough to live independently and cater for kids, without the help of a man. If there was anything else Chika was willing to live for, besides fighting, that was proving the power of the female gender.

" I mean what I said about Yure on the most surface level oo. So, sisters, zero your thoughts on anything deeper. Y'all know how I roll, naw." Chika shrugged.

"And besides," she continued. "All that mushy gushy love nonsense isn't for me." I saw her gag slightly as she said that.

Not getting married wouldn't be a difficult task for Chika, I became certain about that, after knowing her for a few years. Chika wasn't a girl to aww at romance movies, or cry "God, when" at the couples on Social Media. Like me, she literally felt nothing.

"And Yure is wayyyy too tall, abeg." She was still saying. "Even if a miracle happens, and somehow, I decide to date, it definitely won't be him. I don't fancy standing next to a tree. I don't know how his babe does it, biko."

"So what kind of tall do you like?" Soma's grin spread out wider. "Ivandor's kind of tall?"

"Ivandor's tall is okay," Chika stopped, thought about it. "But, thank you, I'll pass." She dropped it easily.

"That Ivandor guy doesn't even talk to anyone. He literally snubs everybody. He won't even answer you, Chi." Ebere said bluntly.

Chika nodded in agreement, "Even if I was the Queen of England."

"He's lucky he's good-looking. The only thing saving him is his insanely good looks. That attitude of his' won't get him far," Ebere spat.

Funny how Ebere seemed to be the one judging people's 'attitide'?

"Plus he's like a star in academics and sports too," Chika coughed, reminding Ebere that there was more to Ivandor, than just his 'insanely good looks'.

Ebere ignored Chika.

Slowly, I started to feel uneasy hearing about our classmates. Every name that was mentioned reminded me more of school and it's extreme madness.

Surprisingly, I felt relieved when Soma squealed,

"Lulu, are you ready to see yourself now??"

And I didn't have a chance to answer, before Soma and the twins, hurriedly got me off the bean bag chair and started pulling me excitedly to the mirror on the wall.

For girls who don't usually wear make up, have you ever felt that feeling after someone has dolled you up, it's time to look yourself in the mirror and view the end product, but your heart is beating out of control? Yes, one, because of curiosity, but also because you're scared... Scared you'd look like a fucking masquerade or something. And no, not because the artist may not be good, but because you genuinely feel your face does it's best to not accept anything good that comes to it.

Yeah, I know. You probably don't know what I'm talking about.

.. but that's exactly how I felt.

And indeed, when the girls stopped me in front of Chika's vanity mirror, my heart stopped beating.

And okay, I didn't look like a masquerade.

I looked... good.

Like, very good.

I don't know how Soma did it, but my eye bags and dark circles were all gone. My pale lips looked richer, even with basic colourless lip gloss on it, and my ugly, dry hair looked greasier, darker, and was neatly twisted into small dreadlocks that were too long to be my real hair. I was certain Soma added little attachments to it.

"See? You look really nice," That was Chika's voice behind me, and I saw her figure approaching, smiling warmly at me, from the mirror, before warm hands gently touched the top of my shoulders.

"And Soma didn't have to over do anything," Chika pointed out.

And she was right.

It was just the eyeliner she drew at my eyelids that was prominent. Asides the fact that the flaws on my face weren't noticable anymore - probably due to the intense powdering that made my face feel stuffed, it was just the eyeliner. My lips didn't have any colour on them, yet somehow they looked even better, just with the simple gloss that Soma had put on them.

Chika smiled by my side, squeezed gently on my shoulders.

"You're beautiful, Dabeluchi, and you don't even need to try too hard," She said to me, gently used a hand to move some parts of my twists away from my forehead, smiled at my reflection, and added, "Don't let anyone make you feel otherwise," She laughed a little, smirked at me, "You cute as hell, biatch!"

She patted my shoulder gently, smiled one last time, before leaving me alone. I was left, pondering on her words.

You're beautiful, Dabeluchi.

Am I..? Am I really beautiful?

I didn't even realise how long I was staring at this version of myself in the mirror and thinking on those words, until Soma had announced that she and Chika were both dressed up, ready and set to go.

"You guys, am I not a spec???" Soma dropped in first, showing off bold eyeliner that made her almond shaped eyes look more narrow, brown shiny gloss popping her big, full lips, grinning toothily, and gesturing a 'tada' at us.

"You look fabulous!" The twins basically screamed and Soma was squealing.

"I got inspiration for my look from Charlotte," Soma told us, gesturing to the clothes she had on that portrayed this chic hipster type fashion.

I frowned at the unfamiliarity of the name she had called to be the source of her dress style inspiration, until she added, "Charlotte HAS to be the best dresser in Henry Danger. Infact, in the whole of Nickelodeon!"

Nickelodeon. Henry Danger. Somadina Best. Figures, I should have known.

"Are you going to have those wrist bands on?" The twins asked, calling my attention to them.

I touched it - the one on my right hand, and the one on my left - the wristbands that I used to shield the marks from the cuts and scars I had self-inflicted, on my wrists.

"It's ruining the whole look," Ebere said. "You look too good to have those things on."

"Exactly," Ebube seconded. "You can have some of our bracelets instead."

Oh God, how will I escape this?

"Dabi can have the wristbands on if that's what she wants," Chika countered the twins easily. I looked to her, grateful.

"It's not like she's dressing for anyone," she continued, "It's all about her being comfortable in what she's wearing."

Chika, saying this, literally had only red lipstick, a much redder, sleek body dress onn, and her big geek glasses. Still, with those prominent hips she had, and her naturally pretty face, and even glasses, she looked just as dressed as we all in the room.

The twins didn't say anything, just shrugged and returned to their phones like it was nothing.

I resumed minding my own business at the mirror and only turned round when I heard Soma's voice, screaming;

"Chika, is that a real tattoo on your neck?!"

Her voice sent unnecessary shock waves to me and instantly, I turned back to them.

"When did you get a tattoo?" A puzzled Soma was asking Chika, who was already laughing so hard at the taller girl's reaction.

"Relax!" Chika was saying, "You overreact wayyyy to much!"

"Wait, Chika, is that tattoo from our last Dares and Pledges?" Ebube asked the girl.

"The one where Ebere dared me to get a tattoo on my neck, and made me pledge to do it? Yes." Chika confirmed.

My mouth dropped to the floor.

Dares and Pledges; It was a game - invented by Soma - that we played for fun.

It was a game where we all assigned long or short term dare tasks to each other at random. Usually, we'd all gather around, in a circle. Soma always said it was a way of sealing our oaths in a covenant, so we would face some 'brutal consequences' if we failed to accomplish our dares.

Ofcourse, that was bullshit.

Soma was the only one who believed in the supernatural forces behind oaths and covenants, we just did this shit for fun - pass out dares, and pledge to it. And true, no one had ever backed out on a dare, to think of it. The girls were always ready to take it on.

Soma wouldn't mind playing with anyone.. as far as she was not getting in trouble. The twins were born rebels and were up for any shit, and Chika.. well.. Chika may be one to take fulfilments of dares too extreme?

Maybe, because she loved being challenged naturally. Infact, say the words "I dare you" and Chika will be willing to take whatever challenge set to her, even if it had rough consequences - Just to prove to you, that she was fearless and capable of doing anything.

Last year, Ebere had dared her to get a tattoo. Chika had already pledged to go on with it, but after Soma had argued that it was against the school rules and regulations and she could be at the risk of an expulsion, we all had to cancel the dare for Chika.

Meanwhile, unknown to us..

"I got the tattoo." Chika told us.

"You didn't have to." Soma said.

"I was dared to, so yes it had to be done." Chika responded, but Soma didn't look convinced that this was a good idea.

"Relax, it's just at the back of my neck. See?" Chika showed Soma. "I deliberately hid it there, so it won't be seen. Y'all hadn't even noticed it, till now."

"If you.. If you say so, Chi." Soma nervously rubbed the back of her neck.

"What's the worst that could happen?" Chika scoffed in reply.

Expulsion, Chi. An expulsion from school in your last year.

"Ouuu, I have an idea to spice up tonight!" Ebere alerted us all.

"Spill!" Soma bubbled.

"Dares and Pledges," The twin smirked. "Why don't we send ourselves on some fun tasks to do in Yure's party? It'll have us having more to look forward to for the night."

If only..

If only I knew that this.. this, was the beginning of an out of control roller coaster ride for ALL of us in this room.

"I love it!" Chika was the first to climb onboard.

"Me too!" Ebube followed up.

"As far as it doesn't get us into trouble at school, I'm in for ANY dare!" Soma squealed.

They all looked at me. As it was, I was the only one who hadn't said a word yet.

"Umm.. " I stuttered, searched for words.

I thought about it.

Going to that party was an initial struggle. After seeing how good I looked, I decided I wanted to show up for it. However... Occupying myself with a dare that would be given to me by the girls would mean interaction with my classmates... I couldn't do that. I couldn't interact with anyone else in school who wasn't Chika, or Soma, or the twins.

But what could I say to the girls? No, I won't be a part of the 'Dares and Pledges'? No. I couldn't ruin the fun. Not after everyone else was already on board.

"I'm in." I said and they jubilated.

If only we knew..

I would have listened to my guts and declined. I would have. I should have. We should have..

I had no idea what I was getting myself into that night, by agreeing to play 'Dares and Pledges'.

I had no idea what we all were all getting ourselves into. We had no idea how we would end up wishing we aborted this mission.

We wouldn't have played this game that night if we knew.

If only we knew... But we didn't know.

"Gather round, Sisters! Let's form the Sister Circle!" Soma squealed, organising the whole thing, as she always did.

We obliged, took seats on of the floor of Chika's room, and made a circle, the girls, smiling radiantly, holding our hands together in a circle, ready to pass onn our dates and make our pledges.... not even knowing what we were getting ourselves into.

"Sisters, let's say our pledge," Soma said to us all.

Together, we lifted a hand in the air, the other stayed on our chests, as we recited the pledge Soma had made for this very game.

"Whatever stays in the circle, remains in the circle."

"I pledge to commit to my tasks,"

"I pledge to keep this between us,"

"I pledge to never ever tell anyone about our tasks,"

"It is done!" Soma said playfully in that accent she mastered well, laughing afterwards, imitating, in a boy's voice, a similar pledge from 'Henry Danger', "I pledge to never ever tell anyone that I'm Captain Man's secret sidekick!" And repeating "It is done!" one more time.

I started to have a feeling that our pledge may have also been inspired by this 'Henry Danger' TV show that Soma loved so much.

However, that wasn't the matter at hand.

All the dares that night were backed up by our pledge, and we all had committed and promised that we would all get it done, hook or crook.

If only we knew what was coming for us. We would have dared ourselves to stop playing this cursed game, and pledged to never ever bring it back.

But we didn't know...

And boy, with our very own hands, we brutally fucked ourselves up.

I know, I know, it's getting hotter, aye??? Omo, we've not started😂😂 We've somehow started oo, but nahhh, we've not started ghan ghan😂😂😂❤️
