Chapter 40- Never let go

The night was dark and cold, it was giving chills down my spine. I felt like my wet clothes were cutting me as they were frozen to a stiff paper-like texture. It must have been like a negative centigrade in the environment.  The teeth-shattering cold wouldn't have been a bother if the people could stay in their comfortable cabins on the luxurious ship.

But with all that luxury, she was going down fast. The Titanic was spending her last hour, trying to keep her gigantic metal body on the surface. Nevertheless, the damage that occurred to her was too fatal.

Carrying around two thousand two hundred souls, she was foundering, bidding her last goodbye to the world. It was tragic that her life didn't exist for long. It was her first sail, it was set up with glory and pride.

And at that moment only half of the Titanic remained above water. Due to the weight load of water, the ship was pulled downwards, causing it to lean towards the front. It wasn't long until the walls would give up and tear apart because of the pressure.

The crowd was buzzing off, searching for a way to escape. It was a game of life and death for us. The ones who gave up became victims of the gushing water. The ones who kept up survived. There was no place for the weak ones in this competition.

As we kept running, practically squeezing ourselves through the crowd, I felt the cold water flooding underneath us. Our feet were covered with water, making people even more anxious.

They were running like crazy, they didn't have a clue about what to do. The only chance of surviving was to run. There were passages everywhere and people were dwelling in which to take. Those who didn't know the ship well would get killed because of walking through the wrong passage.

"Come on, this way," Jungkook grabbed my hand and led me to an open passage on the right.

He was indeed the captain of the ship, no one knew the ship better than him. I was in no doubt that he took the safest way to escape.

The water level was rising second by second. So did my fear. Every minute reduced our chances of survival.

Walking through the passage made it harder because of the water. It wasn't like running in a normal wooden corridor, and it was ten times worse running in water-soaked clothes.

The creaking sound of the walls echoed. It terrified me. Because the ship was leaning to the front, the weight caused the structure to tear. She was holding up as much as she could but I doubted that even the Titanic,  the strongest and largest ship that was ever built would be able to handle the gigantic force that was mercilessly pushing her to the edge.

The moment she would give up, it would be the end of all.

The menacing ripping sound of death gave me shivers out of fear. The water clattering beneath us tried to wash us away to our doom. The passage that used to be lit up with bright bulbs was dimming because of the short circuit.

My head started spinning. A voice echoed in my mind.

We are not going to make it.

I stopped dead in my tracks. Jungkook's body was yanked back because of my halt. He glanced at me flabbergasted with widened eyes.

I stared at him.

"We are not going to make it..." My lips trembled as my voice faded when I talked.

Jungkook's eyes filled with concern. He took a step closer to me.

I was frightened to death, and my hopes of surviving were slowly fading.

This night was going to be the end of our lives.

That's what I felt at that moment.

"I'm scared too Y/n, " he gazed at me. His doe eyes were filled with worry but he had a spark of light in them, a spark of hope.

"I'm scared of losing a life with you together" Jungkook's palms cupped my face, looking deeply into my eyes. His words ached my heart. He started caressing my cheek with his thumb, stretching his lips to a sad smile.

" Jungkook..." I placed my hand on top of his.

The lights started dimming. It was getting darker. We could hear the terrible sound of ripping wood. The roof above us started giving up. A rain of small droplets leaked through the wooden roof above making us both wet.

"Let's go, we have to get out before it gives up," Jungkook said taking a look at the roof above us.

We both ran as fast as we could. I ignored the numbness of my legs and kept running through the passage. A few people were running behind and ahead of us. It didn't take long until we could reach the surface once again.

A blast of cold wind greeted us as we walked to the deck. The whole deck was occupied with people. They were making a total mess. Some were crying,  some were cursing and some stood silent accepting their fate of drowning.

The situation was uncontrolled.

People were getting invasive as they were running short of time.

"There are people here! We have to get out! Please give us a chance!" they kept yelling and begging the officers who were trying to keep them down.

Murdoch who was in charge called the people.

"You will get a boat when it's your chance, for Lord's sake, keep away! Only women and children are allowed!" he shouted at the men who were trying to break in.

As they started pushing each other again the first line of people was shoved forward.  The quarrelling and pleading scattered the air. Those pitiful cries were ignored by the cruel fates.

Murdoch suddenly shot a bullet at the sky, making the crowd stunned. They stepped backwards.

"Y'all stay down or I'm going to shoot you like dogs!" Murdoch's voice roared at the men who were pushing each other, struggling to get on a lifeboat for their dear life's sake.

I glanced at the chaos.

Through all the disarray, I glimpsed the four men who were playing violins. It was slow calming music. Even though no one paid any attention to them, it didn't bother them even a bit. They kept playing with serenity.

I glanced at the fireworks that were lighting up the night sky. It reminded me of the day me and Jungkook spent on the island. The sky and the ocean truly go together...

The first time we kissed.

We had approached the back end of the ship. My eyes landed on a specific place. I couldn't explain what I was feeling, it was a mixture of heart warmth and agony. That place was special for me.

It was where I saved Lilian Harper. It was when my life changed for good. That was the place I met my destined soulmate. The river of emotions melted me with its warmth.

"Jungkook," he gazed at me as I called his name.

I smiled.

"This is where we first met."

Jungkook glanced at the railing of the ship and shifted his gaze to me. His doe eyes softened, they twinkled with tears.

He suddenly kissed me.

"Y/n..." he kissed me deeper. His fingers stroked my hair, pulling me closer to him. His deep mesmerising gaze fell on me.

"You have to promise me something love," he said before once again kissing me.

"You have to promise me that you'll never give up Y/n,  never let go..." My eyes teared up as he said. I felt like a lump in my throat. His words made me an emotional wreck.

I silently nodded.

"I promise that I'll never let go, Jungkook" he gave me a tight squeeze before leaving a soft peck on my lips.

On that tragic night, it was only a matter of time until every memory of us went underwater, forever. But I cherish every moment we have spent together,  until the very last moment.

I'll never let go Jungkook...
