"For a second there, I thought things were gonna get iffy." I heard Jackie say. My ears rung and my vision fogged. I held a hand over my face from the light. I propped myself up on my elbows. My back leaned against the steps of a building. My eyes adjusted to my surroundings.
The sirens turned off on the Police vehicle, a small splatter of street water splashed on me, as the Police car pulled out of the alleyway. Jackie sat next to me, he rubbed his wrists, had a small smirk on his face of relief.
"Wasn't sure if we'd get out of there alive." Jackie added.
"Stints wouldn't of done that to us. By tossing us into the sea." I replied, wiping the sleep from my eyes. I wasn't sure how long I was out for, but I could tell it wasn't long.
"You sure 'bout that?" Jackie questioned.
"Uh huh, he's Heywood, born, bred, and grown. He hates suits as much as we do. Did what he had to do, that's all." I replied back to Jackie, knowing I couldn't blame him for trying to do his job. His team was more corrupted then the other stations in Night city.
"If I hadn't come and screwed up your chance to save a friend. You'd be cruising Night city in sexy wheels right now." Jackie said with guilt.
"Nah, don't pin the blame on yourself. Job was toxic from the start. Even Kubuki under the counter magic couldn't get around an alarm like that. Should'a known that the PD would be on my ass from the start..." I mumbled the last part, seeing that Jackie at the time was pinning the blame on himself. He wiped his bloody nose, the blood from the corner of his lip was already dry. We both probably look like shit.
"So, maybe now as God ordained. Jackie Welles." He held out a hand, introducing himself.
"Ronin." I gave him a simple nod and shook his hand. He furrowed his brows when he heard my name.
"Wait...I know you. You hang and the Coyote." He stated.
"Yep, got the job to steal those wheels at the Coyote. From Kirk." I replied, he raised his eyebrows.
He furrowed his brows after receiving the information, "You work for that sewer slug?" he questioned in disgust.
"Pep'e owed him big and couldn't afford it, so I stepped up." I piped up.
"Man, gotta wonder about Pep'e, lettin' slimy Kirk boss him around like that." Jackie sighed. Pep'e barely let men like that boss him around like that. But he knew how powerful Kirk was. Kirk could easily burn his bar down and kill his family, leaving him with nothing.
"Heard what they say? He's backed up with Cartels." Jackie shook his head in disagreement.
"Cartels? No, no, listen, I know these Cartel types, even the gangs of Heywood's neighbourhood don't know Kirk. It's all a bluff, besides Scarlett's gang runs half of the block. Besides Al cabrรณns gotta learn...He don't do people in Heywood, that's just straight up bullshit, Kirk made up."
"True, it was sketchy from the begging." I agreed with him. He stood up and held out a hand.
"Come on, lets go get some lunch." He offers, with a friendly smile.
"Just like that? You pulledย a barrel to my skull, not too long ago." I reminded him. He simply chuckled and let that memory fly away.
"You helped my homies, you're OK in my book. No harm, no foul?" Jackie replied.
I sighed in relief, I had to let things in the past go. He seemed decent, "Not at all."ย
"Gettin' one of my good feelings." He joked.
"Wait what?" I questioned with a sheepish laugh.
" 'Bout us. Sense a kinda chemistry, you know?"
"You ain't gett'n this booty, Jackie." I joked, his face went red for a moment.
"No, no, you're a very stunning type of gal, but I've already got a girl. Her names Misty, I wouldn't trade her for anyone in the world. Besides I'd rather have a friend around that can kick ass. Bonus points since you're a female... Come on, I'm Fuck'n starved, right now."ย
"Okay, food it is. Lets go.
After that, I didn't expect we would become great friends. I couldn't wait to tell my kids one day when they're old enough, that he pulled gun on me and I managed to smoothly talk my way out of getting a prison sentence, woke up in an alleyway and we became friends.ย
Both Jackie and I started becoming partners in job opportunities on the streets. Taking out the scum on the streets, our morals maintained who we'd kill. Women in Night city have been going missing. And I interrogated this one dude on where those three women were, I didn't get a word out of his mouth. I remembered the memory of Jackie and I going through a bar, trying our best to blend in. It didn't happen...
We killed the target, but I was lucky only to loose a tooth.
Jackie and I started making our ways up the ranks. Every kill, was loading in the cash. Jackie managed to buy me a pretty decent place, he introduced me to his girl Misty. I heard that his Mother didn't support it, and preferred his last girl friend that cheated on him over six times.
Soon enough we were becoming legends on the street. Still placing orders for the best weapons.
Night city was sure the city of dreams, if you knew how to fuel the fire correctly.
Even at some point I scolded myself when Jackie introduced me to his Mother. And I swore in front of her accidentally...it slipped. Thankfully she didn't care, otherwise I'd be un-welcomed and a bad influence for her son. But she knew what kinda shit her son did on the streets.
I felt a shiver crawl up my spine. I inhaled deeply and rolled to the other side of my bed. Then after a couple of minutes I sat up. I looked at the time, it was eight-twenty-five in the evening. My phone started to buzz on my nightstand. My eyes finally adjusted to the glow of the phone.
I let the call follow through and held it up to my ear.
"Hey, you haven't answered my calls all day." I heard a smooth voice say on the opposite line.
"Sorry Wyatt. I work night shifts, you know how much I love bringing in the pay and getting rid of the shit buckets of Night city." I replied to Wyatt. He knew how it was to be both a bounty hunter and a mercenary.
"Indeed, you really pack the punch on your job. Did I wake you?" Wyatt questioned in a charming voice.
"No, I wasn't a sleep...I was... just tidying up." I lied.
"Okay... Me and Elle scored an extra ticket to Samurai, you want to join us tonight? I inhaled deeply and tried to decided.
I was silent for a moment and didn't answer.
"You know how it is now. Everyone on the street knows me now, I hate the feeling." I admitted to Wyatt.
"That's respect, and respect is power, Ronin. It's better than being your ol' ways. Being always hungry, scavenging for shelter, staying at the Coyote most of the day. Its good to have some change, Ronin. And feel free to wear whatever you wish." Wyatt reminded me. He was right, he knew how it was.
Probably better than I did, he grew up in a bad home. He parents would beat him. They didn't want him, they thought he was a disappointment. He was a good kid then, he got top grades, did what he was told, until he got sick of it.
ย I didn't blame him...ย
At the age of thirteen he moved out and was picked up by a gang. He learned the survival instinct, even ethics of the street. He had a really rough background. After that he became a Nomad and started getting scum off the streets, illegal operations were mainly screwed over by Wyatt.
He was pretty feared on the streets. Thankfully the streets became cleaner of perverts, kidnappers, and people who abused women. That's exactly how he met Elle. She had a horrible boyfriend that tried trading her in to pay his debt.ย
When Wyatt found out, it made fury rush through his veins. He made sure her old boyfriend would pay. He was even generous enough and took her off of the streets, knowing she was beaten by him. He made sure no one would look at her wrong, or even touch her again. I respected him all the way.
"Hey you still there?" Wyatt questioned, bringing me out of my zone out.
"Ya, I'll be there. What time?" I questioned.
"9:00 pm, I'll pick you up. Remember, wear something nice." Wyatt reminded me.
"Okay I will." I answered.
"Oh and one more thing. Do you remember that song that you showed me, the one you wrote? The one you wrote when you were beaten near to death in that ol' home of yours?" My stomach twisted when Wyatt reminded me of my darkest hours. My heart swelled at the thought of it.
"Ya, what about?" I questioned.
"Samurai is gonna play it tonight-"
"YOU DID WHAT?!" I hollered in disbelief. I was so embarrassed, he sent my song to one of my favourite bands. God, I am gonna lock myself in my apartment for thirty years and come out when everyone forgot.
"Hey, ow! Did you have to scream? It'll be alright, Ronin. Besides, no one is gonna judge." Wyatt comforted me.
I sighed before answering, "If you say so, then I'll join you. I'm gonna let you go. I have half'n'hour to get ready. I smell terrible, I gotta shower and change into something nice, see you then, Wyatt."ย
"Alright, see you then, Ronin." Wyatt agreed and ended the call. The call was cut short, I quickly hurried into the bathroom to take a quick shower. Before, I grabbed a black t-shirt, a trench coat, some black leather pants, and a pare of black combat boots.
After drying off, I quickly got changed into my chosen clothing. I combed my teal hair back and hurried out of the apartment.
I made a turn through the illuminate red hallways, I accidentally collided into someone.
Her box of things dropped onto the ground. I quickly dropped onto the ground and helped her pick up her things, "Holy crap, I'm so sorry... If something is broken then I'll pay for it." I said with a worried voice.
"No worries. I'm alright, wait a second... You're Ronin Silverjynx!" Her pretty voice discovered. I kept my eyes on the ground and picked up her note books, and other things.
"Indeed I am." I admitted, finally picking up a cute Star-Wars bobble-head, I think it was Kylo Ren or some villain like that. I looked up, she was mesmerising. She had purple, blue, and pink in her hair. Very large sparkly eyes, she was thin, and lean. Around 5'5 ft tall, I was only a bit taller then her. She adjusted her pink leather jacket. I picked up the box and handed it to her.
"There ya go." I commented, handing her the box.
"Thank you, I didn't expect to run into you! I am so,so,so, sorry!" She apologised a billion times.
"No, I was the one who wasn't watching myself. I haven't had a cup of coffee yet." I joked with her.
She chuckled, "Well that's really something. If you never need something, I'm at room 337-"
"Holy shit, I live right next to you!" I said with a shocked voice.
"Next to the legend, huh?" She joked.
"Just Ronin, thanks. I'm no hero to Night city. I've already got a shitty background, anything I've done hasn't made up for the past-" She interrupted me.
"The past is behind you. It matters on your actions, and you helped me when we both ran into each other. Anyways, if you have a pet that needs help or you just want to stop by to say hello, feel free to." She turned her heels and started walking away.
"Wait! I didn't catch your name..." I exclaimed.ย
She stopped and replied, "Breanne Sullivan." I smiled and gave her a nod.
"I'll keep it in mind, Bree." I replied, then panicked when I realised that Wyatt was probably here.
I hurried over to the elevator and waited. The elevator was the shittiest thing I've ever seen. It wasn't the nice ones. It was thin metal shaped as a box with a design that you can see the outside from. The sky was ebony, a small claw hung from the sky. Except the cloud of pollution that made the sky a purple, well almost...
