Chapter 2
With her mouth agape and widened eyes, Y/N swerved to look at Jihoon. She didn't even know why was she so shocked, it's not like twins are a never-seen-before thing. Jihoon just gave her a quick smile as if he's recovered from whatever just happened, and turned his attention back to the class.
English is a really enjoyable subject for Y/N, but that day she just couldn't focus because of what had happened earlier. The thing that bothered her was the way Jimin looked at Jihoon. She knew that conflicts were common between siblings, however, the abhorred expression Jimin wore as he met Jihoon's gaze was no joke.
When the English class was over, Y/N walked out of the classroom. She immersed all her concentration into her thoughts of confusion regarding the situation that happened an hour ago. All the students talking and the especially brash scolding Ms. Kim gave Jimin was just a blurred background during Y/N's reflection-time.
"Y/N, I have Korean and I think you have math, right?" she turned around, stopping herself from thinking about what happened earlier and nodded at Jihoon who had caught up with her, "The classroom is right next to your science class, ok? I'm sorry that I can't take you there... it's just that I'm rushing because my Korean teacher is the austerest out of all, so I can't be late by even a second!"
Y/N nodded again in understatement, watching him as he rushed away after giving her a cute smile. She felt reassured after she had puzzled out that Jihoon didn't feel upset towards her. Suddenly she felt a tap on her shoulder which made her detach her eyes from Jihoon's already small and distant figure.
"Hey, Newbie," Y/N turned around only to face Jimin, and for some reason, it scared her how equal their faces were. At the same time though, the look, the expression on his face was so dissimilar to Jihoon's. Out of nowhere, he grabbed her wrist and placed a book in the palm of her hand as she looked down at it, "You forgot your textbook in class." he explained, letting go of her hand before distancing himself a bit from her. "What is it?" he asked with a smug look on his face when he noticed she was being quiet for too long, "Do I look like a ghost? Or maybe like Jihoon?"
"No!" she exclaimed and paused for a second, trying to think of how could she justify herself. She decided to let him know she wasn't thinking that way, even though it was a bit of a lie, "No, not at all! I was just a bit surprised that Jihoon had a twin... I didn't expect that. I'm a person that gets surprised really easily!" Y/N tried to smile to seem more reassuring, but his expression stayed the same, vacuous and hollow.
"I guess you better run if you don't wanna be late for math," Jimin muttered as he calmly started walking towards the math classroom. He placed his hands into the pockets of his comfy-looking black sweatpants that matched well his black hoodie. Y/N stood there for a while, feeling dumbfounded before running towards the classroom.
Y/N had to introduce herself once again, and she knew it might've not been her last time for the day. Thanks to all this, she was getting better with introductions.
"Thanks, for introducing yourself to us! Now, please, take a seat beside Son Yoonseok," Mr. Moon said after Y/N finished introducing herself to the class. She walked to the desk where a girl was raising her hand, sitting and waiting for her excitedly.
"Hey, Y/N! I'm Yoonseok, would you like to be friends with me?" Y/N thought that the girl seemed friendly, so she agreed. However, she didn't feel like any strong relationship would occur between them, so she just listened to the lesson instead of keeping up a conversation.
Luckily, after class was over, it was lunchtime. Y/N started heading to the cafeteria when someone called her, and she already knew who it was just by hearing his voice. Smiling, she turned to look at him.
"Wait up for me, Y/N!" Jihoon threw his hand in the air, so he could stand out even more throughout his short journey through the crowd of people heading towards the cafeteria. He didn't have to though, to Y/N his charming face and smile, already stood out enough. Once he caught up with her, he asked, "Do you want to eat with me?" Y/N chuckled and replied with a fake-sarcastic-sassy tone.
"Do you think I would've waited for you if I would've had someone else to eat with?" she placed her hands on her hips and made a funny face, hoping she would hear his mellow laugh again. In fact, just as she hoped, Jihoon laughed, his smile showing his perfect teeth.
Once they entered the cafeteria and bought lunch, they found an empty table to sit at. "Jihoon, I have a question to ask you, but it's pretty personal..." Y/N conveyed her concern through her tone, she was afraid to upset Jihoon again with her questions. She wasn't curious, she actually wanted to know because she cares about him, and she wanted him to know that.
"It's ok, I know it's about Jimin, isn't it?" he replied, his tone had this feeling that intended to hint that he already expected her to talk about this. Y/N felt at ease because nor his face, nor his tone intended to prove or show a form of disappointment. "If I would ask you who of the Park twins is better, who would say?" he asked, making Y/N think he was trying to avoid the question she just asked him, and she was okay with it. She didn't want to force him to answer any of his questions, however, Y/N didn't know that he wasn't avoiding her question at all.
"Jihoon, I'm sorry, but how could you ask me such a question? I mean, I don't know the both of you well enough, especially Jimin. You are indeed way friendlier than Jimin, and I'm not trying to aspire offence, but just because you are a more extroverted person, it doesn't make you automatically better. So in conclusion, I can't and I won't choose." Y/N answered sincerely, strictly relying on facts, and that made Jihoon feel content.
"I'm so happy you think like this! Because most people just tell me I'm better, even though I don't ask them this question. It is true he's distant and mean, but that's because people have turned him that way..."
"Do you want to talk about it, or are you not ready to open up to me yet?" Y/N tried her best to show that her intention wasn't to pressure him into telling her about his problems. She genuinely wanted to listen, but if he wasn't ready, then she would wait. Plus they just met, it's normal that he could lack trust.
"Let's go somewhere with no people," Jihoon said, and Y/N agreed since they had already finished eating anyway. After they threw away the trash from their trays, Jihoon led the way to the school garden, and they both sat under a tree where there were no people. "Y/N, I trust you, plus I feel comfortable with you, that's why I'm telling you this."
"Thank you Jihoon, I really appreciate this, I'll listen!"
"Ever since we were young, everyone fancied me over Jimin. I was the one that stood out in our family, the kind twin, who's full of manners and obtains great grades. As for Jimin, the surly, rude and reticent twin. They started sorting us out this way when we were eleven, but even when we were younger than that, my parents paid more attention to me than Jimin. It was as if I was chosen to be the 'centre' even before each of us could find ourselves or personalities..."
Jihoon stopped talking for a while, wanting to hear something from Y/N. He felt as if he was talking too much, and she was instantaneous to catch that. "So... he's a sort of shadow? Is that how people see him? That's really terrible, I see..." Y/N groused those words more to herself, but Jihoon felt such appreciation for her understanding.
"When we were seven, other kids would always choose to play with me and exclude Jimin from all games. Still, today people keep on acting this way towards him, but imagine how hard it was at seven! He really liked the game hide and seek, but no one would let him play when we were young... I also didn't want to play because of that, but Jimin always used to say, "It's whatever, Jihoon. Just go..." and because I was a witless kid, I didn't know that he probably wanted to hold me back." as Jihoon spoke, his chest felt so heavy, and Y/N could sense that.
"No, Jihoon, it's not your fault, and it isn't Jimin's fault either. I'm sure you did your best to include him, plus, it's obvious that he's really good at hiding his emotions..." Y/N didn't want him to feel guilty of something that he wasn't in control of, so she made sure to let him know about her opinion regarding the situation.
"Jimin once told me that he's disgusted to 'share' a face with me... I must've ruined a lot for him..." he grabbed his hair in frustration, sighing heavily as Y/N patted his shoulder comfortingly.
"I'm sure he just said that impulsively. I promise you he doesn't resent you, he's just really hurt! I'm not trying to say I completely know and understand what Jimin feels, I don't have a sister that overshadowes me, but I know for sure he doesn't hate you!" Y/N simpered reassuringly as she gave him a pat on his soft, thin and delicate hair.
"At the age of fifteen, my mom suggested for one of us to dye our hair, so we could be distinguished more easily... I really didn't wanna dye my hair, but I knew Jimin didn't want to do it either, so I chose to be the one to dye them. My mom told me to dye them in yellow, so I could be the sun, and Jimin the night." the regret was highlighted on Jihoon's face and in his voice.
"Jihoon, just know that it's not your fault, and I'm always here for you! I know that Jimin doesn't deserve such treatment."
