Chapter Twenty One - Addy

When I finally wake up, Newt is still unconscious next to me. I scramble to my knees and crawl to his side.

"Newt. Newt, please wake up!" I press my hands to his shoulders and shake him gently. His pulse is weak and erratic, but it's there. "Newt," I beg.

My head still hurts and my heart is pounding nervously, but I can breath sufficiently now. I cradle Newt's head in my lap, close my eyes, and cry quietly.

"Addy?" Newt croaks. His eyes are split open a crack. "What happened? Where are we?"

"Newt!" I gasp, relieved he's alright. "You're ok!" I pull him into sitting position to hug him.

He groans and I see tiny burns along his skin. "I feel like pins and needles are everywhere," he moans.

"I'm so sorry," I whisper, tears leaking from my eyes and onto his shirt.

"Seriously," he asks, "what happened?"

I sniffle. He doesn't remember. That can't be good. "They put you in an electric chair and zapped you if I didn't answer their questions. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't know. I didn't know the answer. I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry." I bury my face in his chest, ashamed.

Newt rubs my back. "Did they hurt you?"

I smile softly. He's so selfless. He's just been victim to torture and he's worried about me. "No. No, I'm alright. Thank you. I love you."

"I love you too. So much." Newt kisses my cheek. "Now, help me up."

"Newt, are you sure?" I ask, worried.

Newt trembles and pushes himself to his knees. "If you won't help me, I'll do it myself," he says with some effort.

I scramble to his side and wrap his arm over my shoulder as he struggles to his feet. I gently lead him up, supporting most of his weight. Suddenly, Newt starts shaking and spasming uncontrollably. He falls to the ground and I catch his head just before it hits the floor.

"Newt!" I cry. "Are you alright?"

He groans, "Yes. Fine." But his words are labored and I don't believe him.

"I'm so sorry." I wrap my arms around his neck in an embrace and then pull him off the floor and seat him on the bed. My hands tremble. This is my fault. "I'm so sorry."

Newt shakes his head. "You didn't do this. You have nothing to apologize for."

"But I could've stopped it from happening," I moan, hugging him.

"Please don't blame yourself," Newt whispers. "This is whole bloody thing is their fault. We have to get out of this shuck place."

I nod. "I should check on Thomas."

"How?"

"Our telepathy, remember?" I tell him.

Newt nods in understanding. "Right. I forgot."

Thomas? I ask. You there? He could still be unconscious from the Changing but I have no idea how long the Changing takes or how long we've been blacked out.

"Why do you think they gave you guys telepathy? Seems like it hurts them more than helps," Newt observes.

He brings up a good point. "I- I don't actually know." But just then, my mind breaks into a memory that gives me the answer.

"Thomas!" I exclaimed, pulling him into a hug. "Where have you been? We can never find you these days."

My brother broke into a tired grin. "They've been training me and this other girl, Teresa. She's supposed to be some sort of trigger for the Trials." I cringed at mention of the Trials and Thomas cleared his throat uncomfortably while moving on. "They've been teaching us to speak into each other's minds."

"Why?" I gasped in awe.

Tommy shrugged. "Not sure exactly. I guess so we can communicate, just the two of us."

"How? Did they put another chip in you?" I asked.

"No, not that I remember. They just used the tracking chip that we already had..." he trailed off as if a lightbulb is being flicked on in his mind. "Of course! Addy, we can train you too! I think I could teach you to use the telepathy!"

I smiled widely. "Yes! Please!"

Thomas seated himself crisscross applesauce on the end of his bed and I follow in suit. "Alright, focus. This will feel weird, I felt stupid the first time, but trust me. Search you mind and find something out of place. Then push on it." As he spoke, he waved his hands around in emphasis. What he was saying did feel pretty stupid, but I tried anyway. "As you push on it, think of me or whoever you're directing the message to."

I closed my eyes and attempted to clear my mind until all the was left was a lone thought that didn't seem quite my own. Thomas, I thought as I mentally slammed my body into it. Thomas.

"Yeah! Yes, keep that up! I can feel it working!" Thomas encouraged.

My head throbbed. "It's working? It hurts! Try sending me something."

Addy? Thomas' voice echoed in my mind.

Hello? I attempted to speak back to him.

"Yes!" Thomas exclaimed. "You got it!" I high five my brother, exhausted from the mental strain but proud at our success.

"We'll keep working on it, but for now, that's amazing progress!" Young Thomas' smiling face is the last thing I see before I'm thrown back into the present.

"Addy?" Newt's concerned face fills my vision. "You alright? You zoned out on me for a second there."

I nod, catching my breath. Gaining memories back is exhausting. "I'm fine. I just got another memory."

"You did? What was it?" Newt looks excited and I can't help smiling.

"The telepathy. I was never supposed to find out about it, but whatever chip they implant to track our vitals and location also allows us to access the telepathy! Thomas was teaching me," I explain.

"This is bloody brilliant!" Newt exclaims. "Teach me! This will be so useful when we escape."

I eagerly begin to teach him and feel a vaguely familiar buzzing inside my head. I grin, "You're getting it!"

"Maybe, but this bloody hurts!" Newt rubs his temples.

"I'm sorry," I say, planting a few kisses on his head. "Better?"

Newt shakes his head in disbelief and smiles softly. He opens his mouth to speak, but suddenly the door slams open, startling us both silent.

"Oh good," Janson says as he walks into the room with a malicious expression on his face. "We're awake. Ready to go?"

Thomas, I try reaching him again. I can't let Newt get hurt. Please tell me you've got something!

Newt puts his arm in front of me protectively but neither of us speak. I don't know what to do, but I can't let Janson hurt Newt again.

"Uncooperative, are we?" Janson tuts in disappointment as though we're disobedient toddlers. "That's alright. I have other methods of making you cooperate."

Janson snaps, glancing over his shoulder and into the hallway. Security guards fill into the room and grab Newt and I. I kick and scream, struggling to get free, but just like before, I'm overpowered an my efforts are futile.

"Stop this! It's not doing any good! I don't know the answers to your questions so this won't get you anywhere!" I scream, wishing Janson were facing me so I could spit in his horrid face.

Janson speaks without turning around as we move along the hallway. "That's what you say, but will that still be what you say when your little boyfriend has to suffer?"

"Yes!" I scream. "Cuz I don't know! You think I liked watching him suffer?! I would do anything to make it stop but I don't know!" I scream again.

"Addy..." Newt says. "It's alright. I promise."

"No! It's not alright!" I exclaim. Then turning my attention to Janson, I scream, "You can't do this to us!"

Finally, Janson turns and looks me straight in the eyes. "And who's going to stop me?"
