The Scamander house was extremely minimal and small for a rich family like them. The walls were a light colour of yellow, representing Hufflepuff, and they always gave out cheerful energy to the people in the house. Their front lawn was clean and neat- but their magically protected backyard, however, contained a large amount of magical creatures.
Browtruckles, Pixies, Fire Crabs, Flobber Worms, several Nifflers, and many more. It was Mr Scamander's favourite place in the house. He'd spend hours in there every day, despite all the work he had as a magizoologist.
Y/N Scamander missed every bit of it.
Y/N pushed open their front door and sighed happily. The place looked exactly the same like last time she was there- magical and alive.
The living room and kitchen were cleaned, and the tiny chandelier was still there.
"Welcome home, kids." Mr Scamander said happily.
"Merlin, I miss this place." Rolf threw himself onto the big sofa in their living room with a loud grunt. He closed his eyes and grinned warmly. "Wake me up when summer's over."
"What are you, a grizzly bear?" Y/N rolled her eyes, slumping onto the sofa next to him.
"Shut up, Niff." Rolf mumbled, eyes still closed.
"Why don't you guys go unpack your trunks?" Mr Scamander said with a slight chuckle. "And then I can make you some dinner, and we can talk about school."
"That sounds nice." Y/N shrugged.
"I'm sleeping, dad." Rolf groaned.
"You can sleep after we eat." Mr Scamander said firmly. "Otherwise your mum would kill me, if you missed dinner."
"When's mum coming back from work, by the way?" Y/N asked.
"She's coming back in 2 days." her dad said.
"2 days?" Rolf exclaimed. "Is there something bad happening? Is everyone alright?"
"Everyone's alright." Mr Scamander said firmly. "Your mother's an Auror, she's always busy. I heard she's training a young witch for her Auror examinations. She said the witch was a talented one, and wanted to spend time helping her."
"That's really Hufflepuff of her." Y/N chuckled. "But I really need to talk to mum about something."
"Well, you can tell me about it." Mr Scamander said with a smile. "At dinner, perhaps. For now, go unpack and change into some fresh clothes. No, Rolf, you can't sleep. And give Roro some food. He's screeching like crazy." Mr Scamander said, eyeing Rolf's loud grey owl in annoyance.
And for that, Y/N dragged her luggages up the stairs to her bedroom on the 2nd floor of the house.
She grabbed the cold door handle and opened it, revealing her old bedroom. It quite small and cold, and was filled with books, vinyl records (from her Uncle Jacob), posters, and stationary.
Y/N quickly unpacked her things and changed into a shirt and sweat pants.
She trotted down stairs, and sat down at their dining table, next to her brother. Rolf was reading a book about Quidditch while they waited for their food.
Not after long, the dishes came flying from the kitchen and onto the table, along with their fork, spoon, and knife. The nostalgic smell of Mr Scamander's food filled the room.
"YES! I love dad's food." Rolf quickly put away his book and started spooning the food onto his plate.
"Hey, don't start eating before me." said Mr Scamander's voice. He came into the room and sat on the chair across from Y/N and Rolf.
"Sorry, dad." Rolf said, but he was already eating. "The Trolley Witch's pumpkin pasties don't last long."
Y/N's eyes lit up when she saw her favourite foods cooked by her dad, and she, like Rolf, didn't hesitate to eat them all.
"Woah, did Dumbledore starve you?" Mr Scamander said and laughed. "Or is it because of my great cooking skills?"
But Y/N and Rolf's mouths were too full with food for them to answer. It was just like when they were younger- with nothing to worry about but food, card games and bedtime stories.
They all ate in silence for minutes, filling their stomachs with their father's delicious food.
"Y/N, you said you wanted to talk to your mum about something." Mr Scamander said.
Y/N blinked, and tried to swallow down all of her food. She drained down some water and proceeded to clear her throat.
"Oh- it's- er," she didn't know where to start. She wanted to ask her dad about his childhood without bringing up Sirius Black. "I- I found out mum was friends with Lily Potter."
To Y/N's surprise, her dad's face fell and he looked down at his plate. Y/N could feel the tension she's created.
"Lily 'otter?" Rolf frowned, his mouth filled with food. "As in 'arry mum?"
"Yes, as in Harry's mum." Y/N said, keeping her eyes on her dad. "Did you know her? Did you know them? Why didn't you tell me?"
"You're going too fast, Y/N." Mr Scamander said softly.
"I'm sorry, but I've been wanting to know since we've arrived here." Y/N said, putting down her fork.
"It's complicated, Y/N." her dad replied. "I'm guessing you learned all this from Remus?"
"Yes, Professor Lupin told me everything." Y/N said, quite betrayed. "That mum was Lily's best friend,- that she stopped talking to Lupin when she found out he was a werewolf. And all along, I've always been so proud of her for saving the Wizarding World as an Auror- but she couldn't even save her own friend from being alone!"
"Y/N, calm down," Mr Scamander said calmly. "it's not as vague as that. There are some things that were done, and was best for everyone."
"Tell me about it." Y/N said cooly. "I've found out too many things this year, that you should've told me about."
"This'll be fun." Rolf muttered, sitting back in his chair.
"Well, what do you want to know?" Mr Scamander asked Y/N.
"Why haven't you told me about Harry earlier, if mum and Lily Potter were best friends?" Y/N asked. "And why didn't you tell my Defense teacher was our cousin!"
"Wait, wait- come again?" Rolf choked.
"Yes, Rolfie, Professor Lupin is mum's cousin." Y/N said openly.
"WHAT?" Rolf gaped. "How do you- what have you- why didn't you tell me about this?"
"Maybe because I just found out a few days ago," Y/N shrugged. "He's Moony, isn't he?" Y/N looked at her dad.
"Moony?" Rolf's eyes grew wide. "Mum's friend that died?"
"Apparently, he's not dead." Y/N said heatedly.
"Holy- Lupin's Moony." Rolf said breathlessly. "He's- oh wow, I hate Hogwarts."
"Why, dad? Why keep all this from us?" Y/N said, her voice was slightly shaky.
Mr Scamander looked overly ashamed. He looked at his 2 children and sighed. He knew they've grown up, and that he had to tell them the truth. Not everything, of course- some things were too complicated.
But they deserve to know part of the truth.
"You're right, Y/N." Mr Scamander said quietly. "You mother was best friends with Lily Potter. And both she and I were friends with Moony- Remus Lupin. I didn't hang out with him much, but your mum and Moony were best friends. Moony was part of James Potter's friend group as well."
"Wait, wait, wait," Rolf interrupted and shut his eyes.
"What?" Y/N snapped, watching her brother 's scrunched face.
"Nothing, my brain just works really slow." said Rolf, opening his eyes."You can continue, dad."
"Alright." Mr Scamander said gently. "Fast forward to the year you were born, Y/N." he gave his daughter a small smile. "You were born a few weeks after Harry Potter. Lily and Lexi were so delighted to have their children born in the same year. So were our other friends, including Remus- he was going to be like an uncle to Harry and you two."
Y/N felt her heart shrink, because that didn't happen at all.
"Oh Merlin, my head hurts." Rolf gripped his head. "This is like one of those plot twists in Beedle the Bard's tales- my life is a tale. My life is a lie. Niff, our lives are lies-"
"Can you please shut it." Y/N muttered. "It's not the time to joke, Rolf. Can you please continue, dad."
"Of course," Mr Scamander seemed slightly nervous. "As you could probably guess, that happiness didn't last long. Lily and James were betrayed by a friend of theirs, in the name of Sirius Black."
"Holy shit, you were Black's friend!" Rolf blurted.
"Language!" Mr Scamander scolded sternly. "But no, I wasn't really. I mostly stuck with my Hufflepuff friends, plus your mum. But Alexis knew Black. Lily was kind of part of James's group, you see."
"But why didn't you, or Lupin, take Harry in after his parents died?" Y/N asked desperately. "Mum was Lily's Best friend! And Lupin was James's best friend. This doesn't make sense."
"It does, Y/N, trust me." Mr Scamander said firmly. "After James and Lily passed away, lots of things happened. Sirius Black killed another friend of his. Peter Pettigrew, was his name."
Y/N fought the urge to correct him, and tell him Sirius was innocent, but she sat there quietly.
"And so Dumbledore didn't trust Harry in the hands of anyone, anymore." Mr Scamander continued. "Remus, Alexis and I tried persuading him so we could take Harry in, but Dumbledore refused. He sent Harry to his aunt and uncle, and forbid us to get in contact with him in any way. And we trusted Dumbledore. It was for the best."
Y/N couldn't believe her ears. She had so many more questions, but she waited for her dad to finish.
"I guess you're wondering why we didn't introduce ourselves to Harry when he came to Hogwarts." Mr Scamander eyed Y/N. She nodded. "Well, same reason Remus didn't. The boy's life restarted in a new world. He had other things to worry about in life."
"So mum just left her best friend's child." Y/N said in a slightly hurt voice. "He was harassed by his aunt and uncle! He was lonely. And you're telling me that he and I could have grown up together as childhood best friends, but instead we meet each other as strangers?"
This really hurt Y/N's head.
"That is the truth." Mr Scamander said sadly. "If Sirius didn't betray the Potters- you, Harry, and Rolf would've grown up together. Lupin would've been like an uncle to you. Everything could've been different."
"That hit harder than the Whomping Willow." Rolf said quietly and stared at the floor.
"It really did." Y/N whispered. "But why keep Lupin from us, dad? Why did mum stop talking to him?"
"You see, Y/N," Sean Scamander sighed. "Moony never told us about- what he was. Not that we would've minded, we would still love him like a brother. But he kept it from us. And one night, a few months after the Potters were murdered, Moony came over to our house. He'd forgotten to take his potion."
Y/N's heart skipped a beat. She knew exactly what would happen next.
"He transformed right in front of our eyes." Mr Scamander said blankly ."I was so scared of losing my one-year-old daughter and my two-year-old son. And I almost did- because Moony kept his biggest secret from us."
"So you stopped talking to him." Rolf said quietly.
"It wasn't out of stubbornness or pettiness." Mr Scamander assured. "But we decided, mutually, it was best to keep away from each other. Everything was already ruined anyways."
That hit hard. 'Everything was already ruined anyways.'
Harry could've had such a wonderful childhood- he would have had 2 best friends, 3 caring uncles, and would've grown up with magic surrounding him.
If only Peter didn't betray Lily and James.
That made Y/N hate the man even more. Her head was spinning like crazy.
"I got to go," she said quietly and stood up from the table. "I'm really tired. Good night."
∞ ϟ 9¾ ♔ ⚯͛ △r⃒⃘ ➵ ♆ (7 weeks later...)
"The Burrow!" Y/N said clearly, dropping the fist full of floo powder onto the floor of the fireplace.
She started to spin, faster and faster- so fast, she felt like she was going to fly out the fire place and crash-land some where.
She shut her eyes when her stomach started to churn dangerously and tucked her elbows in cautiously. And just before she was going to be sick, her spinning slowed down, and finally to a stop.
Y/N opened her eyes and saw that she was in the fireplace of the Weasley house- The Burrow.
She's been spending the last one and a half summers at the place, and fell in love with everything and everyone there.
It was her third home.
She stepped out of the fireplace, dusting herself clean, and found herself in the middle kitchen.
The Burrow was as cozy and warm, as always. It was just so full of magic. The house was built with many different rooms sticking out, and stacking higher and higher. If it wasn't for magic, it would've collapsed since the second floor was built.
"Y/N? Is that you?" came a small voice of a young girl.
Y/N turned around and saw Ron's youngest sister, Ginny, standing near the kitchen door. She had flaming red hair and was wearing a denim dress Hermione had given her. She smiled when she saw Y/N enter the room.
"Ginny, hey!" Y/N came over to the girl and gave her a quick hug. Ginny chuckled happily. "How was your summer?"
"Better, now that there's another girl in the house!" Ginny said happily. "Ron will be happy to see you- he's in the garden, with everyone else. We're eating dinner outside, today."
"That's nice." Y/N smiled and followed Ginny through the living room- kitchen.
She saw a small tennis-sized owl fluttering and hooting around the place, not being able to shut up.
"That's Ron's owl, isn't it?" Y/N recognized it from Ron's previous deliveries.
"Yeah, that's Pig." Ginny said shortly.
"Come again?"
"Pig. Pigwigeon." Ginny said and chuckled slightly to herself. "Ron hates the name, but it's too late to change it."
"I think it's... ironic." Y/N stared at the owl that looked like anything but a pig.
"Your trunk and Bamboo are already in my room, by the way." Ginny said cheerfully. "You and Hermione will be sleeping there."
"Thanks, Gin." Y/N said gratefully. "Gosh, I adore your house."
Y/N gazed out the window and saw the wide field behind the fence of the Weasley family's little backyard. She looked at the view in awe. And that was only their backyard.
Ginny chuckled weakly.
"It's nothing, really." she said shyly. "I'd rather live in a mansion."
The two girls stepped out of the house and into the Weasley's wide garden. It was carpeted with soft grass, and bushed of flowers and berries, as well as a tiny river that ran through the side.
Ron, Fred, George, and two other older redheads were busy preparing the long table, in the middle of the beautiful place.
"Hey, you lot!" Ginny said loudly. "Make way for Y/N Scamander."
The five Weasley boys turned their heads at Y/N's direction, making her flush with colour nervously. Ron's face lit up and he put the plates in his hands down. So did the twins.
"Y/N," Ron, Fred and George rushed over to their sister-like friend and attacked her with their bear hugs. Y/N chuckled happily and hugged them back.
"Hey," she said cheerfully. "How are you guys?"
"Awful, now. We hate your presence." George said ruffled Y/N's hair playfully.
"We're excited, of course." Ron grinned.
"It's our first ever world cup, you see," Fred said happily.
"and we're going for free!" George added.
"And you're coming with us!" Ron chimed in. "How about you? How's it going, at yours?"
"Wonderful." Y/N replied. "Didn't visit my grandparents, this year, but we celebrated my birthday in Cornwall. It was really nice. Thanks for the gifts, by the way."
"No problem." said the three Weasleys.
"Where's our little Rolfie?" Fred asked, looking around for Y/N's older brother.
"He's staying at Cedric's." Y/N replied. "They're going to the World Cup together. I hope we don't see them there."
"Well, you're out of luck." Ron said with a grin. "Dad said Mr Diggory's walking us to the Portkey for the World Cup."
Y/N groaned. She couldn't stand another second with her annoying brother. Not to mention Hermione and Ginny fangirling over him all the time.
"Who might this be?" One of the older Weasley brothers came over. He had long hair, that was put into a ponytail, and really cool piercings. He was tall and lanky, like Ron and Percy, and was wearing a really leathery outfit, similar to a rockstar's.
Y/N would've guessed he was Charlie Weasley, but it was-
"Bill Weasley, Nice to meet you." said Bill, putting out a hand.
"Nice to meet you, Bill." Y/N grinned, shaking the wizard's hand. "Y/N Scamander."
"So it's the Y/N." The other Weasley, who Y/N assumed to be Charlie came over. "Nice to meet you, I'm Charlie- heard a lot about you." he shook her hand enthusiastically.
Charlie was built more like the twins- slightly smaller and stockier. His looks resembled his father's drastically, and his arms were filled with scars and burns.
They both looked really cool.
"It's great to see the both of you, finally." Y/N said with a grin. "I am now offically surrounded by Weasleys... except for Percy. Where is he?"
"In his room, doing Ministry work." Fred said with an eye roll. "All he does is work and eat. I reckon he doesn't even go to the loo-"
"Because he's never sighted anywhere else but his room, and the dining table." said George.
"That's... concerning," Y/N made a face. The Weasleys laughed. "Speaking of, there he comes."
Y/N looked over the twins's shoulder and saw Percy Weasley walking down from the house, in his pajamas and glasses.
He was walking across the lawn and was glaring at Fred and George fiercely.
"What did you two do to my slippers?" He shot angrily at the twins. Y/N could see them struggle not to laugh.
"No idea what you're talking 'bout, Perce." George said.
"We were here the whole time." Fred said with a shrug.
"Don't you lie!" Percy said heatedly. "They're neon pink, and they giggle!"
Fred, George and Ron burst into laughter and gripped their stomachs while Percy's red face glowed in the evening sun.
"Hello, Percy." Y/N said, trying not to laugh.
"Oh. Evening, Scamander." Percy said, not-so-happily. "Nice to see you."
"It's nice to see you too," Y/N replied.
Not long after Percy, Mrs Weasley came strolling across the garden, with a frying pan in her hand.
Molly Weasley was a short plump woman, with bright red hair, and a kind face. She had the most warming eyes Y/N has ever seen.
"Hey, Bill dear, will you come help me with the- Y/N!" Mrs Weasley beamed when her eyes set on Y/N's beaming face. "Hello, dear,"
"Hullo, Mrs Weasley." Y/N grinned.
Molly let go of the pan, which floated in mid air, and quickly pulled Y/N into a motherly hug. "I didn't see you arriving!"
"Oh, I just arrived." Y/N said with a smile. "I came a little early, because my dad had to go to work. I hope that's OK? I can help you with dinner."
"Oh, that's all good!" Mrs Weasley waved her hand. "We were just finishing up. How are you, dear?"
"I'm really great, thanks." Y/N said truthfully. "Really excited for the match. Thank you for having me with you guys."
"Of course!" Mrs Weasley said enthusiastically. "We all love you, Y/N. Don't we?" she turned to her children.
"'Course," they all chorused, giving Y/N a smile.
She blushed gratefully and let out a chuckled.
Mrs Weasley went back into the house, and Bill went inside to help her. Y/N decided to help Ron and George with the drinks. She poured Mrs Weasley's lavender infused lemonade into short glasses, chatting with them excitedly.
"Harry and Hermione'll come tomorrow." Ron said. "They're both staying with us for the rest of summer."
Y/N's heart skipped. Harry.
She'd owled Harry the whole summer, and read every single letter of his over and over again. She loved his weird and awkward way of joking- or according to Hermione, it was flirting. She loved how he always signed off his letters with 'Lots of love (not), Harry'.
He was the best thing that's ever happened to her. He was her best friend. Y/N knew that he loved her as a friend, and he'll always be her there in her life. But something in her tells her there's something...more.
Was she wrong for thinking that?
After all, they were already great together as friends. Besides, Harry probably liked Cho. She was popular, and pretty- and Y/N was... what was she, to him?
"Y/N? Y/N, are you still there?" George nudged her arm gently.
Y/N came back into reality and shook her head soberly.
"Oh- erm, yeah. Can't wait to see them again." she said bluntly.
Ron smirked and looked at George knowingly. Y/N avoided their eye contact. She kept quiet as she poured the rest of the drinks and could feel Ron and George smirking at her teasingly, but chose to ignore them.
When the food was ready, she sat down on the table between Bill and Ginny, and feasted on Mrs Weasley's delicious supper happily, talking with Bill about his job at Gringott's. She learned many new things about the bank, and how the Goblins were paid. It was a nice conversation.
When dinner was finished, Y/N sat on the long bench in the living room, talking to the twins. They talked and talked, until all the light from the sun faded away.
Fred and George proceeded to offer her a sweet in purple wrapping, that she'd never seen before.
"What is it?" Y/N asked curiously.
"A cousin bought these for us from Sweden." Fred said firmly. "They're really good."
"And how will I know you're not pranking me?" Y/N challenged, examining the candy.
"You can ask Ron." George shrugged.
"That, I will do." Y/N walked over to Ron, who was forced to wash the dishes. He looked quite grumpy with his job. Especially when his mum could just magic them clean.
"Hey, Ronald?" Y/N went up to him.
"Yeah?" Ron looked quite grumpy from the dish-washing.
"Is this safe?" Y/N shoved the sweet in front of his eyes.
"Oh, yeah, it is." Ron said, examining the wrapper. "Our cousin gave those to us."
"Huh." Y/N huffed. "Thanks. And I'll help you with those when your mum's not looking."
"Thanks." Ron smiled gratefully.
Y/N walked back to sit on the bench with the twins and eyed them suspiciously. Fred smiled and asked,
"Well? What did Ronnikins say?"
"He said it was safe." Y/N said slowly. "And he usually doesn't deal with your bull crap, so I don't think he's lying."
"You really don't think we're just simply being... what's the word, Georgie? K-k-?"
"Kind?" George raised a brow. Y/N laughed. "That really hurts, Miss Scamander!" he clutched his heart dramatically and fell to his knees. Y/N rolled her eyes.
"Fine, I'm sorry," she said. "I'll try it."
She ripped off the purple wrapper and a bright blue sweet fell into her palm. Y/N glanced up at the twins once more.
"Well, go on, no need to be suspenseful!" Fred ushered.
Y/N shrugged and popped the treat into her mouth. It tasted like normal how normal sweets tasted like, and nothing weird happened. She felt completely normal. That took her by surprise.
"You really didn't prank me." She said in an impressed tone. "What have you done to the real Fred and George?"
"That hurt-"
"A lot."
"We're just being nice, Love." Fred said with a grin.
"I guess..." Y/N shrugged. That was really unusual. Never, in her 3 years of knowing the twins, have they ever given someone food without pranking them.
"Hey, Y/N," came Ron's voice from the kitchen. "could you take over the dishes- MERLIN'S BOOBIES- WHY ARE YOU BLUE?"
Gosh dang it. Fred and George.
"I knew it. I freaking knew it." Y/N rose from the wooden bench. She went to nearest window and looked at her reflection. Of course, her face was a bright shade of blue.
She growled and turned back to Fred and George, who were laughing their arses off.
The day ended with Y/N tackling the twins down, and Mrs Weasley giving them extra chores as a punishment.
Y/N said good night to Ron, and went up to Ginny's bedroom. They talked and laughed about the juicy things that were happening in Hogwarts, before turning off the lights and falling sound asleep.
She'd decided that The Burrow was her favourite place in the Wizarding World. Every day wasn't boring, and was filled with laughter, and no harm.
That was all she wanted in life.
