6. Lies
Maeve climbed out of the window carefully and stepped on the roof. She managed to keep a firm footing and go up on the steep roof. She snatched the bottle of bourbon and pressed it to her lips.
"Hey!" he slurred turning his head to look at her.
She pulled the bottle away from her mouth scrunching her face, "Shut your drunken face." she scolded him.
"That's my bottle. This is my house. And you──" he snatched the bottle back from her, "need to leave." Maeve made an annoyed face giving him a blank look.
"I'm not. And friends share, bitch." she took the bottle back from him, "besides you are drunk. I am not. So I'm going to drink half share of this and get drunk with you."
"Mae, stop this. You know it takes a lot for vampires to get drunk. You, on the other hand get light headed after three glasses."
Maeve raised her hands up in the air defensively before speaking, "In my defence I didn't have much time to build up resistance."
"What are you doing here?" asked Damon giving up on getting the bottle back.
Maeve gave him a side glance lowering her hand that held the bottle, "what do you mean, I am here to watch the sun rise with my good friend."
"And since when am I your good friend?"
"I kneed you in the balls and shot you with wooden bullets laces with vervain. You forced me to wake up bright and early in the morning. After all of this we are still alive and have not murdered each other. I count that as being good friends."
Damon dropped his shoulders watching the horizon glow as the first light of the day started to emerge swallowing the night. Maeve watched as a frowning line appeared on Damon's forehead before it went away. She rested her head on his shoulder scooting closer to him. Damon took in a breath and rested his head on hers.
"It's okay to feel, D. You are not going to be punished for it."
"But people will start having expectations." Damon responded bluntly.
"I am not asking you to announce to the world that you are feeling something." Maeve sharply denoted, "I want you to give yourself the freedom to feel. Constantly wanting to show how remorseless you are is only hurting you." She lifted her head up to look at him. Damon looked into her eyes feeling as if she understood him. He saw her mirror his inner thoughts more clearly than anyone else, "give yourself the luxury to feel."
Damon's eyes softened from their usual sharpness. His lips parted as he confessed to her, "she died because of me, Mae." Maeve wrapped her arms around him pulling him into a hug. Damon placed his hands on top of her right hand wrapped round his front.
Both the friends stayed silent in the dawn. Neither speaking but one slowly feeling better about themselves.
"Excuse me. Are you Maeve? Damon's friend?"
"Yeah. Sorry, you are?"
"Jules."
Maeve moaned slowly opening her eyes. A sense of deja-vu hit her as she woke up with a slight headache. She opened her eyes squinting slightly at the light in front of her. Slowly she gained her full consciousness making her aware of her situation. She gazed down at her hands tied with ropes and then looked in front to find Caroline trapped inside a cage.
"Care? Hey, care." Maeve shifted in her place groaning a little. She looked down again at her fingers to find her ring broken. Again.
Fear struck her making her slump back. "Look, the other one is awake." Maeve turned her head to her right to see a man sitting comfortably on a stool gazing down at her like a predator.
"What do you want?"
"You know..." he sat up, "you are something different. I mean, this one is a vampire but you...on the other hand and interesting. Not a vampire but not a human either. Not to mention a vampire sympathiser. Which is just as bad. So, wanna tell me what you are?"
"Open these ropes and I'll tell ya." Maeve told him with a hiss.
The man laughed and opened his mouth to answer back but the door was pushed open by the blonde interrupting them.
"He wants proof" At this the man once again shot Caroline. He turned towards Maeve with a mischievous glint, with almost a wicked smile.
"Your friend is also here. Speak to her, if you'd like." The girl spoke over the phone. She turned over to Maeve and pulled her head back to make her look back at her by her hair.
"Ahhh, leave me alone you pathetic dog." Maeve bellowed in pain. The woman without a care in the world threw Maeve back. At the impact, Maeve felt slipping from her consciousness as dark spots covered her vision.
She woke up soon to the screams from Caroline. Maeve sat up knowing that she had no choice but to use her powers. She had to pull out her magic that which fuelled in her superior stand over all supernatural creatures. In order, to save Caroline and herself, Maeve had to make a hard choice, one that would end with she having to be in a hard place of doing something she successfully avoided; Tell the truth.
Maeve waited for her chance. The man left, leaving the two alone inside the RV. Maeve looked at her tied hands, "fractos." she muttered. The ropes untied themselves and fell to the floor. She lifted herself up from the floor just in time to see Tyler walk in. She stayed back giving Tyler the space to open the latch to the cage.
"Tyler the latch. Tyler?" Caroline called him but he hesitated. Maeve grabbed him by the back of his shirt and lifted him up with an angered expression marrying on her face.
"I knew you were a stuck up bitch but I didn't think you were an asshole too." She threw Tyler outside of the vehicle with ease and went for the latch. She helped Caroline out of the cage and stand up.
"Look at me Forbes!" Maeve commanded.
"Caroline can I trust you?" She asked against her better judgement. If she knew someone around the team would believe her, keep her secret, she knew it would be Caroline.
"Yeah." Caroline slurred the word feeling tired. Maeve took Caroline's hands in her and closed her eyes. "Sana dolor. vulnus sanitatem." Caroline felt a jolt spark through her body before she began to feel better. Caroline's eyes widened as it clicked in her mind.
"You're a..."
"I will explain everything. Let's get you safe, first." Maeve promised before walking out of the RV.
Maeve stepped outside watching as wolves kept attacking the Salvatore brothers. "Stay here. I'll be back."
A man came rushing towards her and stabbed her into the gut earning a strong scream from her. He pushed her behind onto the bark of the tree. She held his hands that gripped the knife. The pain became unbearable and in that moment Maeve lost all control.
The man looked at her, still gripping the knife but his eyes went wide and face fell. He lost his grip on the knife and stepped back as horror struck him seeing her blood red eyes.
Maeve grunted in pain and pulled the knife out of her gut. She dropped it on the ground next to her. The man watched in horror as she prowled towards him feeling the liberating feeling of adrenaline and power crawl its way over her skin and end at the fingertips elongating into claws.
She grabbed the man by his throat, her claws digging into his neck. He dropped to his knees in front of her, his eyes bulging out. Maeve stared at him with a glassed look. She tightened her hold around his throat before she twisted her wrist breaking his neck in the process. She turned around to look for either of the Salvatore brothers. She noticed Stefan first being tackled by a werewolf.
Maeve leapt ahead with her fangs out. She grabbed the back of his neck and pulled the man closer to her. In fit of her blackout rage, she ripped his heart out making some of his blood splutter on her face. The man dropped at her feet giving Stefan a clear look of Maeve. His jaw went slack at the sight of Maeve. Crimson red blood was splattered over the shirt and her usual bright visage. Her mouth was agape showing her fangs. Lips and teeth coated in blood. He also took notice of her long claws, blood dripping from the edges.
Maeve turned around ignoring Stefan and grabbed the hand of the man who tried to attack her. "That's not a way to treat women, now is it?" she mocked crushing the bone in his hand before she snapped his neck easily.
She looked around to see werewolf circling her with angered expressions. A side of her lips curled into a smile before she raised both her hands in the air, "ossox" she muttered under her breath.
Every single werewolf dropped to their knees screaming in pain. The power in her mind, the anger in her head etched at her to strike. She watched without any remorse as the werewolves bellowed in pain.
"What are you?" one of the men asked biting through the pain.
"Sweetheart....like I would tell you." before she could render anyone unconscious herself, they dropped down themselves. Maeve blinked her eyes pulling herself out of the pain stricken trance.
"Elijah made a deal with Elena." A man announced walking over to them. "I'll handle them myself. You should go." He told them. Maeve looked over at the Salvatore brothers who stood frozen in place, their eyes fixated on Maeve who was covered in blood with her eyes still red as blood and claws dripping of blood.
Maeve looked at Damon first but looked away at Stefan before she chose to stare at her feet immediately as a familiar emotion pooled into their eyes; fear. She could see how much both feared the person who stood before them
Damon speeded away first before Stefan followed his brother. Maeve first looked at the scene──bodies spread out, blood splattered around on the ground, coating her fingers. "I lost control..." she muttered to herself. "I lost control again. This isn't happening."
"The strength...the powers──" he muttered before gasping in shock, "the eyes. You're her, aren't you? The one they──" the witch trailed off. Maeve stood in place fearing his next actions.
Anticipating her thoughts he chose to respond before it could escalate, "don't fear me. My name is Jonas Martin. Us Martin witches are not as shallow and puritans as the rest."
"And how can I trust you?"
"I am working for an original. I think that counts for something." He responded.
"I'll take your word for it. Thank you Mr Martin."
"It is my honor." He told her. Jonas turned to Tyler who stood by the RV listening to their conversation. He made his way over to Maeve with an apologetic look.
"I am sorry Maeve, I didn't know what and this just...I didn't think they would go after Caroline or you." Maeve lifted up her hand stopping his words,
"I am not the one you need to apologies to and she isn't in the mood to listen to you either. But remember one thing: friends stand for one another. That's lesson number one." Maeve pushed past him over to Caroline who stood by the RV still a little tired from being tortured.
Maeve hesitated at first to reach out to the vampire. She feared a similar reaction from her as she got from the Salvatores. Maeve placed a hand on Caroline's shoulder making her flinch in response. Maeve stepped away from her scared herself of Caroline's reaction, "please...Care. don't be scared of me."
Caroline softened reaching a hand out to take Maeve's hand. "I am not scared of you, Mae. I could never be."
"It's just...I did all of this just now and──"
"It isn't anything either of the brothers haven't done. You did it to save me. Thank you." Maeve cracked half a smile at Caroline's words.
"Let's get you home, huh?" Maeve said helping Caroline walk.
Maeve walked into her apartment tired, with trembling hands. She cried the whole way home from Caroline's place. She dropped the keys carelessly in the bowl and walked into the kitchen. She opened a cabinet and pulled out a bottle of vodka for herself.
"You're back." a voice startled her making her jolt up in place. She placed a hand to her chest and turned around frantically. She let out a relieved sigh seeing who stood in the middle of her living room.
"Hey." She walked around the kitchen table over to him but maintained a respectable distance.
"Want to explain what I saw."
"Look, I had my reasons to hide it okay." She started but stopped her next words.
"Really? Reasons? That's your excuse, Maeve?" a pang hit her heart hearing him say her full name.
"Damon...I──"
"You what? Couldn't trust us? Trust me?" he yelled at her. "Is that how it is? What was it that I saw Maeve? You shifted partly into a Werewolf and if that's not all you performed spells too! How do you think I feel?"
"Damon I am sorry I didn't say anything." Maeve apologised controlling her tears.
"Why? Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because I have a target on my head!" Maeve shouted loudly. "I am a hunted being and the very reason I didn't tell you was because just like every fucking other person I want to live!" she let out.
Damon stood staring at her in the dimly lit room processing her words. "So you thought I would kill you?"
"It sure didn't stop you from thinking it when you realised Tyler's a Werewolf. Not to mention you did kill Mason Lockwood!" Maeve scoffed taking a big swing of the vodka.
"I didn't go through with killing Tyler now did I? And as for Mason he pissed me off. Ratted me out to Sheriff. I had very different...very strong reasons to kill him."
"And me? What about me?" Maeve asked him, her voice turning soft.
"You honestly thought that I would kill you or hand you over to whoever it is who are trying to kill you?" berated Damon holding his emotionless face. Maeve watched carefully, his eyes flickering betrayal in them.
"Tonight when Elijah's witch came you looked at me with uncertainty. Why? Did you fear me?" Maeve asked dodging his question.
"I was not scared. I was shocked at what stood in front of me, can you blame me? You had blood on your mouth, with fangs. You had claws with bright red eyes like the Devil. Without hesitation you were ripping their hearts and snapping their necks. If that was not enough you went ahead and used spells to torture those werewolves. How do you think I felt seeing my best friend be a..." Damon trailed off. But Maeve realised what he was say.
"Be a Monster. Right? That's what you have to say. Come on, say it. Say you were scared of me in that moment. Say it that I am a Monster. Say it" Maeve seethed holding back tears.
"I am not going to say it. Ever! I just want to know why was it difficult for you to tell me?"
"Anyone could have listened in and the more people know about me, worse it is." Maeve told him, not being able to hold back her tears anymore. "I have very little control over myself, Damon. These powers are all new to me. I chose Mystic Falls as a way to hide behind the supernatural occurences here to live. I couldn't risk it."
"I can't believe you lied to me." Damon spoke with disappointment clear in his dismissive tone, "I thought we were better friends than that." Damon walked out of her apartment, leaving her standing alone in the room. Maeve dropped to her knees in the middle of the room, the bottle of vodka still in hand. She reached out for the phone in the back pocket of her jeans and dialled one number she knew would help her.
"Hey Moony! It's so late, are you alright?"
"Zeke, I did something bad." She whimpered into the phone.
