51. It's me, now

Klaus ended the phone call from Elijah and immediately turned to look at Maeve. She, in her wolf form still, was fast asleep in a corner.

While Elijah and Kol boarded a flight to Virgina to get to Mystic Falls as soon as they could, that night proved to be more challengingly for Maeve and Klaus.

Just as Klaus finished discussing something with Caroline which Maeve blocked out without her conscious will, Maeve shifted back into her human form. The spell she had casted on herself to hide the hideous look had melted now showing the effects the darkness was having on her.

Caroline looked shocked seeing Maeve. "What is it?" asked Klaus before turning around,

"Wait!" shouted Caroline loudly. Klaus looked startled when he flinched and looked at Caroline again. "Maeve shifted back and she's...um, not wearing clothes."

Klaus hummed and nodded. He closed his eyes and relied on his senses to navigate his way. "go a bit to your left and there's a blanket." he followed Caroline's words and went to use it to cover Maeve.

"Why did you shift back?" asked Klaus moving away from Maeve, just so she could have space to stand up.

"I...uh, I guess I wanted to." Maeve wrapped herself completely around with the blanket and stood up, stretching out her legs. "Turn around idiot, let me put on some clothes."

Maeve gazed out the window with an unflinching stare on the silhouette of the bushes barely visible under the night. Klaus knew it just by seeing her stance that Maeve had once again been pushed at the back of her mind.

"You shouldn't have shifted back." said Klaus.

Maeve turned around, her eyes immediately settling on Klaus quite sharply and with a cold touch, "what makes you think I didn't make her do it?" she asked him in a condescending tone. Maeve strolled away from the window and over to Klaus who stood close to the barrier.

"I fed enough on her magic. For months to grow strong Klaus. You don't know how much I am capable of." asserted Maeve.

Klaus growled showing off his anger, "I will end you." Maeve laughed obnoxiously loud and stepped even closer to him,

"You can try but I am the Serene Witch, Klaus. It won't be easy. But sure give it a try. I'm wearing the ring, I'll just come back." commented Maeve, "Come on now, Klaus. You have always been the better one. Feared, a true Alpha, the perfect hybrid, greedy for power. I always wondered why she decided to choose Elijah and not you. You are far more suited for me. Evil, powerful, hated by the world. I get it that you've got issues, God knows how many hours of therapy but let's be honest we are all a little coo-coo ourselves. But you──you are all sorts of nuts. Parental issues, anger issues, abandonment issues, demons that just love you."

Klaus pressed his hand around her neck and slammed her against the wall behind. "You mind your next words. I know better than to react but you leave me no choice."

Maeve laughed sinisterly, submitting to his hold. "it's so easy to rile you up. Poor Maeve is screaming inside, you know. She doesn't want me to tell you how flawed and crazy you are. These are her thoughts you know. Ah ha ha, she just knows how fucked up you are. I thought she was pitying you and being your friend but turns out. She sympathizes with you. How adorable."

Klaus growled flashing his yellow eyes to show the anger, "cute." Maeve used both her hands and slapped them on his. She used all of her strength and pushed him away easily.

"You can try all you want, but let's be honest, you are just a newbie as is Tyler." Klaus raised his hand to take another swing but Maeve had dug out her claws and was just as ready to defend. She defeated Klaus easily──then again, Klaus hadn't put much strength into his swing. He didn't want to hurt Maeve.

"Enough!" shouted Klaus, "you will not best me and you will not try a hand at sabotaging anything."

Maeve let out yet another dark laugh almost as if she mocked Klaus, "you are so in need of therapy. Just when you think there's a new Sheriff in town you lash out like a crazy person. Are you really that insecure."

"Don't think that you can try and get on my nerves with your concocted lies." said Klaus attempting to show how unbothered he was with her words.

"Come on, Nik. I'm only stating the truth. You know it. In fact you love it." said Maeve stepping forth in an intimidating manner. "You like that Maeve shares the same troubles as you. You actually enjoyed the fact that she was judged as someone evil, exactly like you and she was willing to help you in any way possible. You don't see her as a friend. You see the strong being who could have killed you. You like having her around just for that."

Klaus recollected the brief words of Elijah and acted upon his instructions, "I do recall Maeve having some afflictions for the way I exhibited violence. The blood and the war always fascinated her."

"Which time?" asked Maeve, her eyes narrowing on Klaus.

"Bring back the other Maeve and you'll know. We spend some glorious time in Summer and after discussing violence." Maeve's face scrunched up in a grimace before she gritted her teeth to muffle her groans and grunts. She opened her eyes again, immediately darting up to look at Klaus,

"I──I di...didn──didn't mean it, Nik. I am so sorry. I swear that was not me. I didn't mean it. Don't trust those words. Nik that was not me." Maeve continued to ramble on, apologising profusely. Klaus shook his head and pulled Maeve into a hug.

"I know." was all he said before he started rubbing a hand over her back calming her down as she wept into his hug.

"I can't, Nik. Not anymore." she said in the hug. "It's too much."

Klaus pulled her away, to look into her eyes. "Maeve, don't. You cannot give up."

"Nik...you don't understand. I forced myself to shift."

"It wasn't you, it was that darkness which we are planning to get rid of, aren't we? Just some more time."

"No. Not anymore. That darkness is getting powerful, Nik. I don't know how much longer I can take it." Klaus stayed silent. What could he possibly say that would help her?

Maeve snapped her head up when a small crack resonated around the room. "Did you hear that?" She asked Klaus.

"Hear what?" Instead of answering, she moved to the barrier and touched it. Her hand passed through the wall. The barrier was down.

"It's gone?"

"Apparently. Something must be wrong with Bonnie." Both of them walked out of the house.

Caroline, who sat on the bench on the foyer looked up shocked to see the two. She stood up on her feet, her eyes going from Klaus to Maeve.

"Something has happened to your friend." Klaus informed her. Caroline didn't reply, she went up to Maeve instead and hugged the tired hybrid.

"It's going to be okay, Maeve." said Caroline.

“oh look, they care. Adorable all of these people. Why don't you just kill them? Get rid of them.”

“i need to get rid of you, not them.”

“really? How many times must I tell you, you don't need them. You are far better than any of them or all of them combined. Let me show you.”

Before Maeve could consciously do something her darkness reigned on her powers and attacked Caroline. Caroline was flung across and thrown on the bench.

"Maeve!"

"You think I don't know what you're trying? Telling stories, hugging her. There's no getting rid of me. There's a Prophecy right? Prophecy of death. Don't worry, there'll be death. Just not of whom you desire." Maeve straightened her back, showing off her authority. "Come on guys, haven't you been bored of her yet? Such a sap, lovey dovey girl always thinking about others. I, on the other hand, won't. This is the better me──she's just been imitating me, all these days. Get used to the new management."

"How dare you!" Klaus was angry now. He lunged at Maeve to subdue her but Maeve knew better, she used her magic and flung him back inside the house. The front door broke off its hinges from the force of Klaus's body colliding with it and shattered as it hit the ground.

Maeve stumbled backward with a frustrated scream. She used the pillar as support. Maeve bent down heaving deep breaths and blinking her eyes rapidly. She came to her senses──although her vision was still clouded she could make out in-between the white spots that Klaus was on the floor attempting to stand up and Caroline was on her feet leaning on a side.

When Maeve came to, the first thing she noticed was spots of blood on Klaus's hand and on the floor. Next was the action Caroline did as if she was fixing a bone in her hand. She shook her head, her nostrils flaring and tears glistening her eyes; she hated what she had done.

"What have I done? I...I am sorry, so sorry. Sorry. God! Why? Sorry Caroline, Nik. I am so sorry. So sorry."

"Hey! Hey hey hey hey, Maeve?" Caroline called her, "it's okay, we are not hurt, see?" she gestured to herself and then at Klaus who walked out on the porch again.

"No! You're lying!" shouted Maeve, her voice echoing into the dark night. "You hate me! You hate her and hate that she's me. Don't you see? She is me. I have always been her. It was only a matter of time before I snapped. Damon was right, I am the Devil. I hurt you. Who knows what I will do next? I need to go. I should go." Maeve didn't wait for any more words and ran off.

Caroline looked at Klaus who was surprisingly silent, "what can we do?"

"Do you have a list of her favourite songs? Movie? Memories? Anything that is tied to Maeve."

"Uh yes, yes I have the playlist, her favourite movie on DVD. A lot of memories yes."

"We are going to need your help." said Klaus before he pulled out his phone to dial Elijah.

Silence rang deadly inside Maeve's apartment. Her hands fisted on the edge of the sink inside the bathroom, eyes burning into her own reflection. She could see the black bags under her eyes, the lethargy in her body visible in the lackluster posture and dropped shoulders.

"Come on Maeve. How long are you going to sulk? Let me out. Let's have some real fun." said her reflection with a menacing smile.

"No. You hurt my friends. I will not let you hurt anyone else!" shouted Maeve. She slammed her hands on the sink, breaking it into pieces. Maeve stormed inside her bedroom again. Her magic glowed and flashed in the golden rim around her red eyes before it emitted out in an effervescent glow on her fingertips and resonated like a scream around the room. The windows shook, as did the floor. Maeve succumbed to the tired feeling and dropped to her knees.

Outside, in the living room stood the three Mikaelson brothers and Caroline listening to Maeve's screams and feeling the shocks of her magic that constantly kept banging into objects around.

"She's going to hurt herself! We need to do something." said Caroline ready to march up to her.

"We tried, Caroline and what happened? You broke a shoulder and I broke a door. Clearly we need another strategy." said Klaus equally frustrated.

"Give me a moment. Alone." Elijah requested, his eyes never straying away from the door of the bedroom.

"Are you sure? Believe me, the dark side is a bitch." Caroline warned him.

"Yes, I am sure. Just...give us some privacy."

"We'll go back to the mansion. Caroline get some sleep." Klaus said and walked up to the front door. "We'll return in the morning."

"Yeah...I'll have the uh, her favourite songs ready to play and movie. I'll get the DVD player and the CD as well."

Elijah waited for everyone to leave before he approached the door. Elijah lightly knocked on the wooden door. "Maeve?" He called out her name softly.

"Oh hi Elijah. Missed us?" asked Maeve in a cold tone.

"Maeve? Remember the night in the kitchen at the mansion? Remember my promise, Maeve. Remember what I told you." said Elijah. He rested his head on the door, ears perched up to listen to any movement on the inside.

"The promise?" came Maeve's voice. His Maeve. Elijah sighed and moved his head away from the door. "Open the door Maeve. Please."

The door was thrown open forcefully startling Elijah, "the promise?" repeated Maeve.

"Yes, I promised you I will not let you fall. I won't." Maeve's features hardened and back straightened up.

"That's quite rich coming from you James Bond considering I owe you the reason why for all of this." Maeve gestured to her own body.

Elijah's undead heart clenched in his chest. A fear he harboured in his mind was coming true──he thought it wouldn't but it was. "What is that supposed to mean?" he acted as if he was challenging her.

Maeve chuckled darkly. "You helped her be better at her magic. Previously I would take control every now and then. I slaughtered those witches at her house. Too much emotions──too much of any emotion actually gave me a way to get to her conscious. But then you walked in. Wearing a suit, giving out his word and promises. You showed her that she wasnya bad person, she was just bad at controlling her magic. You helped her get better and I kept feeding on it."

"You're lying."

"Am I?" Maeve's features softened again, tears streaming down her face. "Have you noticed the dark moments? Moments where she seemed not herself?  You helped me with magic and look at this. I hurt Nik and Caroline today. Who knows what I'll do next? You helped me and this all began. You made me finally give in to my emotions and that yes──this is who I am. Look where that has gotten me to. The Prophecy being true. It all started with you saying you could help. She's been feeding on my magic and gaining more and more control with each step I took to having that hold over my magic."

Maeve's eyes teared up, and body trembled as words left her mouth. She stared at Elijah, pleading with her eyes to not see her words, not to believe them and just look at her eyes that pleaded with him to stay. "You are the worst perom I can be around right now."

"Maeve──" his words were cut off with Maeve slamming the door close in his face. Elijah stared at the door, unable to think. He was right. He was responsible for everything. The words he had read in the book echoed in his mind like a broken record.

He was responsible for everything. Elijah gave one last look to the door and muttered, "I am sorry, Maeve." he left the apartment.

"Please stay." she said but her voice didn't reach Elijah. Inside the room Maeve slid down on the floor, her back against the door and mouth agape for the silent scream to leave her dry mouth.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Why? Easy. You won't let me out. Still struggling like a self righteous bitch. So I am going to make you give me control. Once you are backed into a corner you will have no choice but to submit."
