49. There's no chance

"Alright. So, change of clothes, good food and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." listed out Caroline as she strolled into the Gilbert house. She looked up finally, her eyes landing on Tyler just as she did.

"You're helping her?" he asked her arrogantly.

Tyler had adamantly spent the entire day entertaining himself by staring at Klaus and Maeve, trapped inside the barrier. For him, it felt nice to see them be helpless for once.

"Yes, I am. She's my friend Tyler." Caroline tossed the bag toward Klaus who caught it swiftly and handed it to a tired Maeve sitting on the couch in the room.

"She's his friend too." pointed out Tyler clearly not liking the friendship his girlfriend had with Maeve.

"And Damon is yours. I never said anything, why are you?" Caroline chastised sharply. Maeve's jaw dropped while Tyler gaped surprised. Caroline ignored his reaction and turned to Maeve instead,

"How are you feeling?" Maeve's face fell and turned sour.

"She tried to get rid of the barrier, attempting to kill me in the process. So, yeah I'm swell!" she said sarcastically.

"We'll get you through it. Don't give up, okay?" Caroline said.

"Call Bonnie." instructed Klaus. "Get us out of here."

"Why would we help you?" interrupted Tyler. "Either of you." His eyes flickered from Maeve to Klaus. "You killed my mom, you killed Aunt Jenna."

"How easily did you forget that I set you free from the struggle of being a werewolf? Or how I was invited in by the Sheriff to save her daughter's life."

"You used your sirebond to make me do it." argued Tyler.

"I said a friend. You were the one who picked your own girlfriend."

"Enough!" shouted Maeve. She limped slightly and rose up to her feet. "Stop arguing. Bonnie is not here anymore──I can only assume. There is no way that we two can get out. And as for the bitch..." She narrowed her eyes on Tyler, "get the fuck out. No one wants you here." she turned to Klaus again, "you make peace with the prison cell."

Maeve lost her balance just as she uttered the words, clutching her head in her hands. She groaned and grunted reflecting the pain that coursed through her body. "Stop it." she shouted at no one in particular.

"Fine." she said and limped. Klaus being close, held her up. Maeve leaned entirely on Klaus for support having lost all sense of her own body.

"It's alright Maeve. You're here now." he calmed her and began soothingly rubbing a hand over her back.

Maeve sniffled, her fingers curling into a fist to release the pressure she felt within. "I can't take it anymore."

"You'll fight it. I know you can. Just hold on for a while, we'll get you through this." assured Klaus.

Maeve nodded her head tiredly, "I am tired, Nik. So tired." she whined softly.

"Maeve, why don't you sleep?" suggested Caroline. Her eyes softened and were on the verge of tears, seeing the state of Maeve.

Maeve nodded and shifted on the couch and laid down. It didn't take long for her to doze off. Klaus covered her with a blanket and walked back to the barrier, right where Caroline stood.

"Go to the mansion. On the mantle above the fireplace is a vial with a black liquid. Get it."

"What is it?" asked Caroline. Klaus considered his next words before he spoke again,

"It's best if we sedate her for now. Maverick gave that sedation dose just for her. Considering she's a Lycan, morphine won't work. Her system will heal its effects within minutes. To keep her under for long he made a natural sedation dose."

Caroline gasped hearing Klaus, "is it the right thing to do? I mean...we risk──"

"We don't have a choice nor do we have a chance. Caroline, when this shadow of hers tried to break the barrier, I tried to stop her. But a force pushed me away. The shadow is gaining more control of her and we cannot risk losing our Maeve." Caroline nodded her head. She turned to Tyler one last time, "stop gloating and leave, Tyler. You're only wasting your time."

Suddenly Caroline looked around the room. "Where is Elijah?" asked Caroline, "he is supposed to be here."

"Maeve and I, we both agreed that he leaves immediately with Kol. Frankly neither of us were certain what you might do considering your plan to murder Kol failed."

Caroline's featured hardened, "Plan to murder? It was not our plan, okay? And seriously? You want to talk about murder? Have you forgotten where it is that you are standing? Who used to live here? Aunt Jenna, whom you murdered in cold blood. Ever since you have shown up, you have destroyed our lives! The only reason I am even helping you is because I love Maeve. I care about her and you seem to do that too. I have to make peace with it." She raised her arms up to her head scoffing distastefully. "I can't even believe the calories I am burning just talking to you." Klaus, enraged by Caroline's words picked up a table lamp near to him and used it as a means to pull Caroline closer to him.

Klaus bared out his teeth and bit into her neck and pushed her away. Caroline gasped and shrieked feeling the venom slowly enter her system. "There." said Klaus hauntingly, "that was definitely worth your calories."

Klaus rubbed a hand over his face bright and early in the morning. He glanced out of the window, and noticed the faint blue of the sky slowly taking over the uncertain darkness of the night. Klaus had spent half the night awake by Maeve's side. Caroline never returned with the vial, neither did Tyler. All night, Klaus kept himself awake and alert for anything that changed in Maeve. Occasionally through the night Maeve thrashed mumbling a quiet no or don't but remained asleep. Klaus tried getting inside her head but failed just like he had when she tried to break the barrier.

It wasn't long before he received a call from Elijah, like clockwork. "How is she?" asked Elijah as soon as Klaus answered.

"Currently asleep. But still haunted."

"This is ridiculous. I should have never agreed to leave. I should be there."

"There is nothing you could have done. We would still be ridiculously trapped in this jail and you would have been helpless as you are now. This way at least you are seeking answers."

"So far nothing. Everyone is all for letting Maeve die. Every witch, warlock and vampires with resources. Everyone wants her to die." stated Elijah bitterly. Klaus closed his eyes breathing in sharply. His eyes wandered to Maeve who was finally sound and asleep.

"Not to mention he ripped out at least half a dozen hearts out of frustration." Commented Kol in an amused voice.

"I simply didn't see the point in keeping a resourceless person breathing."

Klaus snickered at Elijah's words, "You have always been the madman in love. Doesn't surprise me."

"Well, it surprises me. Wait till I tell Maeve about this. She is going to throw a fit."

"For now, she is fast asleep. I'll see when she wakes up and call." Klaus ended the call.

Maeve stirred in her place moaning as she woke up. "What time is it?"

"A little after ten." replied Klaus. "How are you feeling?"

Maeve pressed a hand to her head, "pounding headache, screaming voice and lethargic body. Enough of a diagnosis for you?"

The front door opened turning their attention away. Through the door walked in a delivery boy. "Maeve?" he asked in a stuttering voice.

"Nik!" shrieked Maeve, a dull smile appearing on her face when she recognised the delivery boy. "It's him."

Klaus looked at him before he grinned suggestively, "what can we do for you?"

"That man...in a suit, he said to deliver food here." he said and held up a bag.

"Slid it over to us." He followed Maeve's instructions and scurried off immediately.

"He is still afraid then." said Klaus lifting up and the bag and moving over to Maeve.

"You should have seen him on the morning of the ball."

The two ate the pancakes and bacon in silence. The bittersweet taste of Coffee melted perfectly with the warm pancakes giving some composure to the two best friends.

The front door opened to reveal Tyler walking in holding Caroline. He set her down on the ground.

"You wanna be in control, Klaus?" Tyler began, "here. Now, you get to be in control of her life. If you want her to die. Fine. But then you can sit here and watch her die yourself." Tyler left the house in a hurry. Maeve turned to face Klaus who walked over to them.

Maeve glanced wryly at Caroline's weakened state before she turned a sharp glare at Klaus, "what did you do? Are you insane?" Maeve rolled her eyes. She searched for to use to get Caroline through the barrier.

Maeve picked up the blanket and used one end to hold it in her hands and the other to throw it at Caroline. "Care, grab it and I'll drag you in." Caroline did as told and Maeve successfully pulled Caroline inside the barrier.

Maeve helped Caroline onto the couch and knelt next to her on the floor. Her eyes examining the effects of the bite.

"Nothing personal, love, but if I cure you, that means victory for him. Don't worry. It won't be long now." Klaus said kneeling down next to Maeve.

"I swear you are a nutcase at times." She said through gritted teeth. "heal her."

"I simply did what she wanted. Something worth for the calories to burn." Klaus commented arrogantly. "You, need to take a beat. Call Elijah. He and Kol have been running around trying to find answers to this."

"This? What? Illness? Disease? Ailment? It's a prophecy about death Nik. You can say 'about my death'. I won't flinch anymore." Maeve features changed drastically, "besides, I kinda like this. She could make do with some of her fashion but I'll get through with that."

"Shut up." whined Caroline in a soft, tired voice. "Maeve?"

Maeve's face scrunched in pain, "you all are pathetic." A single tear rolled down Maeve's right eye when she opened them again. "I'm sorry for her, Care. I'm so sorry."

"If you don't feed me your blood. I'll die." Caroline whimpered.

"Then you'll die, and Tyler will have leaned his lesson the hard way." Klaus responded who stood leaning against the wall.

"How could you do this to him? To his mom? To me?" Caroline asked.

"I'm a thousand years old. Call it boredom." He replied.

"I don't believe you." Caroline denied his statement.

"Fine. Then maybe it's because I am pure evil and I can't help myself."

"No, it's because you were hurt. Which means that there's a part of you that is human." Caroline responded. Klaus turned to look at her. Although, he kept his expressions neutral, Maeve saw that he was not expecting a response as such from Caroline.

"How could you possibly think that?" He asked. Klaus sat on the coffee table looking over at Caroline. Maeve had shifted aside to the window hoping that now at least, Klaus would heal the vampire. Also, to give them the little bit of privacy she could.

"Because I've seen it. Because I've caught myself wishing that I could forget all the horrible things that you've done."

"But you can't, can you?"

"I know that you're in love with me. And anybody capable of love is capable of being saved."

"You're hallucinating." Klaus was quick to deny her words.

"I was not when I saw you panic when Maeve went missing or when you teared up when we thought Maeve died. I'm not hallucinating when I say I know you're in love with me. Anyone capable of love is capable of being saved."

Caroline fell into a coughing fit after she said. "Caroline?" Klaus called her but she fell further into the painful hold of the hybrid bite.

Klaus immediately went by her side. He held her up and bit into his wrist. He offered it to her. Caroline drank his blood feeling the wound heal.

He looked back at Maeve who have him a smile and nod. Maeve turned away from him to the window. She casted another spell on herself. Maeve couldn't bear to show Klaus the weakened state she was in. She didn't want anyone to see the the heavy black bags under her eyes or the paleness of the skin; or the blood shot eyes that looked half dead already.

No one knew the truth of what was happening to Maeve and she would do anything to keep it that way.

"Why are you doing this?"

"They are troubled enough. Don't want to worry them more."

"Such drama" the voice in her head groaned. "Don't worry. I'm getting my time soon. I can feel you giving up."
