37. Trouble
"invisique" muttered Maeve under her breath as soon as she saw Damon and Stefan speed in through the front door. Worry, fear and tension rose under her skin, boiling in her blood making her ears throb.
She nervously ran inside the living room. The sight of the Mystic Falls gang immobilising Klaus made her feel frozen in place. Maeve felt her chest constraint seeing the betrayed look and unshed tears glassing his eyes. Momentarily she forgot the spell she had cast upon herself. Klaus looked at her but couldn't do much as the spell took its complete form and he fell to the ground.
Maeve's mouth fell wide open. She watched the Salvatore brothers with the help of Tyler drag Klaus's body outside of the mansion. Maeve lifted the invisibility spell and dropped to her knees.
"Maeve!" she heard Ezekiel cry out her name. With a deep breath, she turned her head to catch a look at his face before he immediately dropped to his knees as well in front of her, "are you okay?"
"They took him, Zeke. They took him." she mumbled to him.
"We'll get him. I promise. Hey! Look at me, look at me." Zeke forced her to look at him, "we'll get him back. Yeah?"
"We'll bring him back." she mumbled back. With another deep breath she stood back up.
"Where's everyone else?"
"Alaric completed his transition." Ezekiel began, "Bonnie says she was controlled by the witches but who knows──I mean, can you really believe what comes out of any of their mouths. He attacked Rebekah and Caroline at the school but Rebekah managed to get out. Klaus told Rebekah and Elijah to leave, told me to be with you and left to save Caroline and take care of Alaric."
"Shit. Why did you not wake me up?"
Ezekiel chuckled darkly, "I tried to, Elijah too but you wouldn't budge."
"Come on, we need to get them back here." said Maeve. Ezekiel nodded along. Before he could respond or add more another voice interrupted them,
"Hello! Is anybody here or have you all collectively disbanded me again?" Maeve hung her head low and smiled.
"Call Elijah. I'll explain everything to him." Ezekiel told his younger sister and handed her his phone.
Maeve pulled up his contact and dialled the original vampire. "They desiccated Nik" said Maeve as soon as she heard the click of the call being answered.
"What?"
"Yes. Get back here."
"We're on our way."
"Listen." she stopped him from ending the call.
"What is it?"
"Don't tell them I'm alive." She ended the call not letting Elijah or Rebekah say anything more. "Mochatini?" she looked up to see Kol.
"Hey Kolbear."
"What do you want me to do?"
Inside the Gilbert residence, Elijah sat at the dining table in the kitchen facing Elena and Stefan. He simply laid out a plan staying true to what Maeve said.
"All we need is to take that stake away from him. Once he's been disarmed, the weapon is in my possession, my family will scatter to the ends of the Earth and Alaric will follow us." Elijah told them sincerely.
"And you'll just run?" Stefan clarified taking a seat next to Elena. Elijah's phone buzzed distracting them all. He pulled it out of his jacket pocket but immediately disconnected it.
"We've done it before. Klaus and Rebekah spent the better part of a thousand years evading my father. What's another half century while Elena is able to live out the rest of her natural life?"
"We've finally stopped him, Elijah. After everything that he's done to us, I can't just let you bring him back."
"I give you my word, Elena. I will not revive Klaus within yours nor even within your children's lifetimes. Perhaps that will finally teach him some manners." Everyone seemed to have bought into his words. Elijah kept a cold look intact even if he knew he knew the loophole in his words. He knew Maeve would revive his brother the second he was in their possession again. But dare he show it to the Salvatore and Doppelganger.
"Why should she trust you? All you've done is screw her over."
"Yes, I am well aware of the actions of Niklaus but know this; Maeve is dead." Elijah's eyes were locked on Elena. "And despite knowing it well that it was you who conspired with my mother that led her to her death, you are still breathing. Both, Rebekah and Kol have reluctantly agreed to not harm you if you agree to give me my brother."
"No no no no no. Did I mention no?" came Damon's voice over the speaker of the phone laid on the table.
"Unfortunately Damon, I don't quite recollect asking for your opinion." Elijah snapped, his eyes were on his own phone that was now buzzing for the fourth time. His anger towards the older Salvatore showing visibly with the way he clenched his fist and coldly once again looked at Elena.
After Stefan verbally said it, giving Elena the power for decision making, even Damon silenced himself. "We have a deal." said Elena. "and I'm sorry about Maeve."
"Somehow I don't believe you. After all, you did aid her in finishing off Maeve the first time around." Elijah's words cut sharp through Elena.
Maeve had her eyes locked with sheer fascination with Damon. He squirmed first then his jaw dropped dramatically before he finally got a sentence out. "You're alive!" he shouted.
Maeve shifted her weight on her left leg and crossed her arms giving him a deflated look, "I'm standing in front of you, aren't I?"
"We saw you die. Esther killed you." Maeve saw something flicker on his face. But she knew better than to trust the softened eyes of Damon Salvatore. All they ever did was bring her trouble.
"Get Nik's coffin. Now." Maeve ordered him. "I'm not in the mood, Damon. Just do what I say." He didn't say anything but walked away. With each step he took, Maeve knew he was still processing her being alive and that only fuelled into her ego.
Maeve scattered into the shadows when she felt another set of footsteps. Too strong to belong to Rebekah. Alaric sauntered into the warehouse holding the white oak stake in hand.
Not before long, Rebekah stepped inside the warehouse. "Beks." she whispered out her name.
"Why did you ask us to not tell them you're alive?" Rebekah asked as soon as she saw Maeve.
"Not important for now." Maeve pulled Rebekah aside, inside a storage unit. She locked her eyes with Rebekah's. "Listen to me very carefully. Just follow me and my lead, alright? No using your own brain. No drama and don't believe everything you see. Okay? Don't──at all...like at all believe what you see."
"Alright?" she drew out the last syllable, confusion evident on her face but Maeve decided to let it be.
"Alaric is here. Let's go." Maeve led Rebekah through the dark long way to the back entrance where a car was parked to take them away. Rebekah silently just followed through as Maeve led her. When she saw the back entrance gate wide open and Maeve headed that way, she forced Maeve to stop and snatched her hand out of her hold.
"We have to take Nik!" exasperated Rebekah.
"Rebekah!" Maeve scoldingly began, "there are vampire ears other than yours, please just listen to me."
Damon rolled in Klaus's coffin just then, his eyes burning into Maeve, "talking about me?"
"Alaric." Maeve told him sharply.
Rebekah moved to the other side of the coffin, situating herself so that she could push it outside. Maeve rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to talk but she was thrown aside like a ragged doll. She blinked her eyes as soon as her body collided with the floor. She shifted on her back and stood up.
Alaric stood there. Without a second longer he opened the lid of the coffin and stabbed Klaus with the white oak stake he had. Rebekah let out a painful anguish filled scream. Maeve stared blankly as fire engulfed her best friend's body.
Damon held Rebekah back struggling to keep her from reaching for her brother. Maeve jumped to her feet immediately.
"Rebekah. Run!" yelled Damon frantically, his eyes set on Alaric. Rebekah ran away instantly.
Maeve turned her complete attention to Alaric who growled. His eyes were now locked on Maeve. "Oh look at that!" she scoffed, "Mama Mikaelson put me on the kill list too."
Damon jumped in front of Maeve in an attempt to shield her. Maeve peered over his shoulder with a repulsed expression. "Really? Now." She pushed him aside and raised both her hands in the air, palam flat and open, "motus"
Alaric was sent flying across the room. His back collided with the wall before he fell to the floor. His grip loosened around the white oak. Taking his distracted state to an advantage Maeve thought on her feet and casted a spell. The white oak went flying across and into Maeve's hands.
"I think you can handle your best friend." Maeve waved her hand sending a quick tight smile Damon's way and walked out of the warehouse.
She scooted into the passenger side seat of the SUV parked right outside. She glanced at the road visible only in the headlights of the car and then slowly turned her head to the driver's side of the car. A bright triumphant smile spread across her face. Her eyes flashed red with a thin lining of golden speck. Not a single ounce of her face or that smile held anything but a dark malignance to it.
He gulped hesitantly seeing Maeve in that different light. She felt like a stranger at that moment. Maeve slumped back in her seat and glanced out the window. "He's dead." she told him coldly.
Elijah stood inside the mansion. He rested a hand on the spiral staircase railing, eyes fixed on the steps. He held himself together for his sister. He didn't show anguish or tears.
Their plan failed. Alaric killed Klaus. Rebekah relayed the news in the woods before disappearing. All Elijah heard from her was that they didn't deserve to be on the run again.
Elijah turned his head around expecting Rebekah when the front door creaked open. His reaction faltered seeing who walked in through the door. "Caroline?" he said her name with slight confusion. She stepped in with Tyler Lockwood just behind her.
"What are you two doing here? Shouldn't you be──"
Caroline cut him off, "yes but we aren't. Don't know how." Maeve must have had something to do with it. Perhaps she found a way to save them or did she find a way to save Klaus?
"I didn't want to be here. Trust me, she dragged me here." said Tyler.
"Where's Maeve? She told me to come here and I brought him along."
"She's alive?" Tyler said shocked.
"Can we focus on matter at hand?" Caroline dismissively scolded him, "do you know where she is or what happened?"
Before their conversation could continue on, Tyler let out a yelp of pain before dropping to his feet in agony. He gripped his shirt to let off some of the pain he felt rise up from his chest, as he writhed on the cold marble floor. Caroline, looking shaken, knelt down next to him, confusion etched upon her delicate features.
Tyler's eyes turned an unnatural shade of yellow, fangs outstretched like those of a rabid beast. From deep within his chest, a menacing growl emitted lowly, echoing through the air.
Caroline's heart raced as she held Tyler's shaking hand tightly, watching helplessly as his entire body trembled with unimaginable torment. The desperate scene only intensified when Elijah, shook his head watching from afar- disbelief etched into his chiseled features.
"What's happening?" demanded Caroline, her voice cracking under the strain of fear. Elijah's penetrating gaze locked onto Tyler's pale and contorting face; his instincts kicking in as they took note of the horrifying shift in their companion's demeanor.
Suspicion crept into his narrowed eyes as he observed grey veins crawl menacingly up over Tyler's skin, turning it paler still."Caroline...his hand," Elijah murmured ominously.
Her breath hitching involuntarily at his words; Caroline forced herself to look away from his tormented gaze, her eyes now fixated on his disfigured hand. "He's not dying. He's not. He can't be."
The scene unfolding before them was harrowing, as Tyler slumped further into Caroline's trembling arms, the sinister grey veins spreading across his skin. The sudden stillness in the air was almost unbearable when his heart stopped beating. Unable to process the magnitude of the moment, Caroline cradled him close, releasing a shuddering breath as tears streamed unbidden down her face.
A defeated sigh escaped Elijah as he reluctantly pulled out his phone; there was only one person who could help Tyler now and save them from this nightmare of a situation."I'm sorry, Caroline," Elijah told her sympathetically- something rarely heard from this stoic individual. His apologetic tone did little to alleviate Caroline's overwhelming grief. After much hesitation, Elijah dialed her number and pressed the phone to his ear.
Elijah picked up his phone and dialed her number. As he waited for the call to connect, he turned away from Caroline. He needed to be alone with his thoughts. The phone rang several times before going to voicemail. This only increased his anxiety. Klaus was dead, Maeve wasn't answering his calls, and Rebekah was off somewhere dealing with her own pain.
His attention was caught by a sudden gasp. Caroline was standing only a few feet away from Elijah. Tyler's grey veins had disappeared and he was breathing again. He opened his eyes and looked around the room before coughing and putting all of his weight on one hand. He glanced up at Elijah.
"Tyler?" Caroline whispered his name. He looked from her to Elijah again.
"We have to help Maeve. She's in trouble." said Tyler.
"What?"
Tyler pulled himself up to his feet and faced the two of them, "Maeve ... she's in trouble as is Ezekiel. We need to help them."
A figure suddenly appeared, rushing into the midst of the group, bringing with it a sense of confusion, worry, and fear. Kol stood before them, feeling short of breath and overwhelmed.
'Kol?" breathed out Elijah in a hoarse voice. His eyes flickered over to Tyler at whom Kol glanced first before he looked at Elijah. His eyes revealed a lot of questions.
"Hi Elijah, I don't have time to catch up. We need to help Mochatini and her brother." Kol said hurrying his words.
"That's what Tyler just said." Caroline mentioned, gazing from Kol to Tyler. Her face, stained with tears, eventually moved to Kol and locked eyes with him, "What did you do to him?"
"Yeah...about that." Kol scratched the back of his neck as he spoke. "That's not Tyler anymore"
A smirk appeared on Tyler's face, causing Caroline to become suspicious and cross her arms. Tyler's eyes flickered strangely, and it eventually became clear to Elijah what was happening, "Hello love." said Tyler uncharacteristically.
Elijah's eyes widened, lips parted in surprise. It couldn't be, could it? he thought to himself.
"Klaus." Caroline breathed out.
