24. Healing

Klaus gently laid Maeve on a bed in the guest room of his mansion. He could only hope she was well. It seemed so when her wound healed and her breathing went to normal.

As the sun began to rise, Klaus made his way out of his residence, checking on Maeve before departing. Later that morning, he returned from the warehouse to his mansion, seething with anger towards Stefan Salvatore. Upon parking his car, Klaus stormed towards the main entrance, only to halt in confusion at the sight of six individuals standing outside.

"Can I help you?" asked Klaus, rudely. All of them turned around swiftly.

"Are you Klaus?" asked the male who walked ahead of them. His curly dark hair were combed perfectly to the back. He had a short neck, long face and narrowed sharp eyes.

"Yes. Who are you?"

"Great. I am Ace. This is Florence, Lollita, Jack, Ben and Penelope. We are from the Kalon pack." introduced Ace. "Alpha...I mean, Maeve wasn't at her apartment when we reached. Do you know where she is?"

"I know where she is. Please come in." Klaus graciously invited them in. Klaus walked ahead of them leading them in the parlor of his yet to be completed mansion.

A disgusted look spread across all their faces making them repulsively turn their heads away when Klaus responded, "She's asleep upstairs."

"Ugh. You could have just said she's with you." said Ace with a disgusted grunt.

"Not like that." Klaus paused before continuing, "something happened last night." He narrated everything that happened last night.

Klaus had heard stories since the mid nineteenth century of the Kalon pack. The pack, was dangerous and strong. He knew how protective the pack would get if harm even looked at their Alpha. As the raging expression crawled onto their faces, he wouldn't say one more word than was necessary for him to complete the story.

"Is she okay? Where is she?" Ace turned around, scanning the under construction building as if he could find her in there.

"She is fine. Her wound is healed." told Klaus gaining Ace's attention again. "She is upstairs in the guest room. She will feel alright as soon as the effects of the silver go away."

The tired voice of Maeve came from the door saying, "Yeah, that hangover doesn't seem like it's gonna go away anytime soon.". Ace immediately went to her side, placing both his hands on her arms.

"Are you okay?"

"Gently, Buffon! I'm still in slight pain." grimaced Maeve. Ace pulled his hands away letting Maeve walk in the room. She limped on one leg as she stumbled into the room. She went right up to Klaus. Klaus smiled at her.

"Glad you're okay." said Klaus. Maeve smiled back and hugged him.

"Thank you Klaus." said Maeve.

"You're most welcome." Maeve broke the hug and turned to her pack members again.

"I'm fine you guys. Stop worrying."

Florence shook her head deciding to speak first. "This isn't us worrying. Klaus told us he fed you his blood. It means you're fine. This is us planning something about Damon."

"Not anymore. I have it sorted out." Ace declared.

"Two things." said Maeve in a sudden commanding tone. "First, let's all agree this remains between us. No one is going to say anything to Zeke or auntie. And second, no one is killing Damon."

"The hell we're not killing him! Did you forget last night?" asked Jack.

"I remember. But killing won't send a message would it? Ezekiel once told me, I need to send a message, I need to tell him who it is that he messed with." Maeve raised a single eyebrow telling them what she meant. "Why don't we show him?"

"That being said...What about Alpha two and the big boss?" asked Ace. "We have to face them."

"As friends?"

"No can do. We're Gammas, Maeve. We answer to you and other Alpha bosses." stated Penelope, already hating the request to lie.

Maeve gripped the sleeve of Klaus's jacket, situating herself in such a way that she could hide it. "Don't make me use my Alpha command." said Maeve trying to not slur her words.

"You wouldn't dare." said Ace.

"Try me."

Ace turned to the five who accompanied him on the road trip and nodded. "Let's find Damon. It's time we give this town a lesson on Kalons." determinedly dictated Ace.

All turned to Maeve and bowed their heads in respect before turning to Klaus, "thank you for taking care of our Alpha." thanked Florence as everyone nodded. They all exited the house leaving Maeve and Klaus alone.

Maeve sat on the step that led up to the part of the parlor with a fireplace. She rested her head on the wall to her left letting out a defeated and tired sigh.

"Are you really okay?" asked Klaus as soon as everyone left.

"No." Maeve waved a hand over her face and neck revealing the hideous truth.

Klaus was in shock as he saw the woman in front of him. He quickly knelt down to examine her. Klaus gently held her cheeks, trying to see how badly she was hurt. Her blood vessels were prominently visible around her jugular. There was a bruise that had turned black and blue where the syringe had been stabbed in. The dark circles under her eyes were another indication of her suffering.

"What's happening? I thought my blood healed you." asked Klaus examining her red marked neck and paled face.

"Yeah, not as much. My stab wound is healed but this...this is not going away soon. My guess is they mixed something with silver...like witch hazel to stop my magic." revealed Maeve breathing with difficulty through her mouth, "to cover up myself, I drained half my energy."

"I'm calling them again. They need to see this." declared Klaus, his anger growing to a whole new level seeing the state of Maeve. Maeve placed a hand on top of his,

"Don't. They'd worry too much. I don't want them to."

"They are your pack members, Maeve. If anyone can help you, it's them."

Maeve shook her head, "no, I'll be fine. You helped a lot, didn't you? I just need to...I need to rest. I just..." words trailed off as flashbacks came back to her. Tears sprung in her eyes as her lips quivered.

"What did I ever do to them? Why are they doing this to me? He just watched me die. He didn't move. He didn't do anything. The man I did so much for──nothing " whimpered Maeve looking at Klaus.

"I don't know but they will pay for this." said Klaus.

Her eyes drooped, tears rolling down her cheeks. "I feel sleepy. I want to..."

"Go to sleep love. Take rest." said Klaus.

"I should go home." announced Maeve slurring her words.

"No. Stay here. I need to keep an eye on you." determinedly said Klaus. "That needs to heal first." Klaus bit into his wrist and pressed it to her mouth. Maeve let it happen. She wanted to heal faster than she was at that moment.

Maeve pushed his hand away from her mouth, "thanks."

"Can you manage to get upstairs?"

"I can." Maeve pushed herself off the floor before she glanced at Klaus once again, "did something else happen? I mean...you look like you want to kill."

"I want to murder both the Salvatores if that is what you think I want." answered Klaus helping her stand up on her feet. "Damon for what he did to you and Stefan for stealing my family."

Maeve widened her eyes, stunned, "that fool! He stole the coffins? What are you going to do?"

"Nothing you need to worry about. I'll handle it. Damon is being handled by your pack members and I will take care of Stefan. You focus on getting better."

"Okay." she answered in a meek voice.

Ace parked his car outside of the Boarding house. He rested his arm on top of the steering wheel and looked at the entrance. He glanced at the front porch before he turned to look at his friends. "That is the Salvatore house." he announced. "Damon would be there."

"What are we waiting for then? Let's show him what we are." said Lollita, already etching to get her hands on Damon.

"We are waiting for me to tell you my plan." prompted Penelope. "Listen..." she explained her idea for a sneak attack on the older Salvatore.

"All clear? Let's go then." four doors of the jeep opened in unison as everyone stepped out, each as raging as the other. Ace went up to the front porch while the rest dispersed to the area around the house.

Ace knocked on the door of the boarding house waiting impatiently for Klaus to answer. His brows furrowed curiously when a woman answered the door. "Can I help you?" she asked him.

"Yeah, I am looking for a man named Damon Salvatore. But um...who are you?" asked Ace.

"I am Elena. His...friend. He is here. who are you?"

"Oh uh, Damon knows who I am. Do you mind calling him?" Elena hesitated at first but opened the door wider. "Damon?" she called him. Ace remained at the other side of the door getting angsty.

"Who is it?" he heard a male voice from inside the house inquire.

"He says you know him." Ace clenched his fist as the man in question came into view. His blood boiled seeing the man casually walk up to him nursing a glass of bourbon in his hand.

"Can I help you?" asked Damon. "Can't say I remember you."

"Oh actually." Ace stepped inside the house keeping his eyes firmly on Damon, "You don't know me directly. I saw you about four months ago. You might actually recognise me by who my Alpha is." hearing this Damon instinctively pulled Elena behind him.

"How can I help you then?" asked Damon attempting to sound calm and unafraid.

"Firstly..." came a voice from behind them. Damon swiftly turned around to see an unfamiliar brunette sauntering into the house. He froze. His eyes were fixated on her. "We would like to know what is your deal with our Alpha? I mean...we know the general gist from what we gathered from Klaus and of course, Alpha Ezekiel but I want to know from you. Why did you do what you did last night."

"She is alive, isn't she?" Damon remained incredulous. "So what's the hold up?"

Ace grabbed Damon by his neck. His claws elongating as they dug into the vampire's skin. He lifted Damon up and slammed him against the nearest wall.

"Damon!" shrieked Elena. The brunette, Penelope stomped toward the doppelganger and gripped her by her arms.

"We have nothing directly with you. So unless you would like for me to do to you what Damon is about to face, stay still." her voice was full of malice, and cold.

"To inform you...our Alpha or Maeve since your clueless girlfriend here doesn't know...is not well. We came here today morning to meet our favourite Alpha and find out if she's all right only to find her resting in Klaus's place. She tried to hide it but she looked knackered. Klaus was kind to give the complete details about what must have happened. Now, what did you do and why did you do it?"

"We...w---we needed a stronger bait for Klaus." stuttered Damon fighting Ace's grip. The claws that dug in his neck almost took away whole of his energy. His body felt like it was paralysed.

"Bait her?" reiterated four voices coming into view. Six built people; three women and three men now circled Damon. Penelope stood ahead of Elena blocking her from interfering.

Ace dropped his hold on Damon. The older Salvatore dropped to his knees and placed his hand on his neck. "What did you inject her with?" asked Ace stepping back.

Elena stood outside of the "kill" circle helplessly watching as all who were Lycans like Maeve stood over Damon.

"Melted Silver and witch hazel." replied Damon in a groggy voice. Florence took the first chance and kicked Damon in the stomach as hard as she could. Damon toppled over on his back at the impact. His hands flew to his stomach.

Ace launched himself and grabbed Damon by his collar and lifted him up. "You asshole!" Ace punched him, breaking his nose.

All stepped back letting Damon heal himself. All had their claws and fangs out. Each flashed their dangerously yellow eyes. Damon grunted pulling himself up on his feet. He stumbled on his feet drunkenly. "I am sorry for what I did, okay?" he apologized to them.

"That doesn't miraculously heal our Alpha!" shouted Lollita taking the next turn to punch Damon.

All launched themselves at him together. Each took their chance to beat, kick and slam him against the wall. Damon had no choice but to bear through the punches.

A bloodied Damon lay sprawled on the foyer of the house too bruised to heal with his vampire strength. Everyone breathed deeply taking a step back. All noticed the torn lip, broken nose, bruised eye and bleeding eyebrow. His face was surprisingly swollen. His healing had gotten slow for his liking.

"You need to learn your place on the food chain, vampire." snarled Ace. "This will remind you." one last time, Ace grabbed Damon, pulling him up and bit into his neck forcefully. Damon, too tired and battered let out a short scream from the pain before he fell unconscious.

"Have fun healing, bitch." snarled Ben, for the first time. With one last glaring look at Elena the six warriors of the most dangerous pack in America sauntered out of the house, satisfied with their work.

Elena who was being held in place immediately knelt beside Damon cupping his face in her hands. She struggled to see straight with the panic and fear that glassed her eyes and fogged her head.

Thinking of instinct she dialled Stefan first but the younger Salvatore refused to pick up the call. She dialled the Bennett witch next and asked her to come there immediately. Perhaps she could help heal Damon.

A week passed on from then. The six returned to Georgia on the seventh day when Maeve seemed back to her usual self. Her tired eyes were bright now, back to their usual glow. She was not bed ridden anymore.

Maeve sat that evening, after saying goodbye to her friends with a glass of bourbon in hand next to Klaus. Neither spoke anything but sat in silence reflecting on everything that led up to that moment.

"Florence accused me of having ulterior motives for caring about you." began Klaus mindlessly staring at the fire. "I told her I do not want to use you as a weapon. I am not the Salvatore brothers."

"Yeah...you could never stoop to their level. That's what makes you a better man."

"Emotional abuse doesn't necessarily mean making someone feel worthless. It also, sometimes is praising someone so much that the person is willing to do anything and everything for them. That is exactly what I saw Damon doing to you that day. At the time of the dance."

"You knew this because of how Mikael treated you." conclusively stated Maeve with a defeated sigh.

"He would belittle me. Tell me how unworthy and weak I am."

"You forced yourself to believe that is the truth. I am sorry, Nik about what he did. He's an asshole who didn't deserve to have a family. He's a tyrant. You are the bravest man I know."

"How can you say I am any less of a tyrant?"

"You are not chasing someone compulsively, all the time like a fangirl obsessed with a boyband. The fact that I am sitting here...healed of my wounds, twice being saved by one person──you, who treated me like a human and not a weapon, an object proves that you are not Mikael. You could never become Mikael."

"Thank you."

"Nah...thank you." both smiled at each other.

"You called me Nik."

"Gah! Slip of tongue. Sorry."

"It's okay. You can call me that."

"Holy lord!" exclaimed Maeve, pressing a hand to her chest, "is Klaus Mikaelson gone soft on me?"

"Yep don't tell the world." teasingly chuckled Klaus, finishing his drink.

"Ahh! There goes my chance to ruin your reputation." Maeve shook her head unable to hold back her laughter. Klaus joined her laughing himself, something he hadn't done as genuinely before.

Unfortunately the sound of the door bell ringing broke their laughter. "Now who is that?" asked Maeve.

Klaus smiled before turning to the door. "Welcome. How can I help you?" said Klaus, wounding his hands behind his back.

Maeve stood up from the couch and walked around to stand by the arm of it, getting a clear view of the door yet to open.

It was only a matter of minutes before the door burst open to reveal Elena. After glaring at Klaus for a moment, she turned to Maeve. In a curt tone, she asked, "What did you do to Damon?"

Maeve laughed menacingly, as she placed her glass on the table next to the couch and sauntered up a bit close to Elena. "Why? Is he in pain?" asked Maeve, the coldness in her voice made Elena almost regret her decision of coming there.

"What did you do to him?" this time it was Bonnie who asked. Surprisingly neither had noticed her enter the room. Maeve threw a quick glance Klaus's way before she stepped away from the doppelganger.

"You have to be specific, Bennett." said Maeve acting oblivious, although she knew what it was that the two best friends inquired about.

"You sent your pack members to beat Damon and you're asking us to be specific?" venomously spat Elena.

"I think she's talking about Ace going over to teach Damon a lesson." said Klaus in a condescending manner. Maeve nodded her head opening her mouth before closing it again.

"Ah yes yes...I faintly remember Ace mentioning something." said Maeve, bitterly. She strided around to the table where there was alcohol stacked in flasks. "It's just....my memory is a bit blurry. You know..." she glanced at Klaus as if she was saying something with just a glance, "having been stabbed with silver and witch hazel...fatally wounded and damaged." Maeve turned to Klaus pressing her lips together in anger, "Klaus, could you please tell me what was happening to me a week ago? On the night of the homecoming dance?"

Klaus took two short steps and stood next to her, facing Elena completely, "Your supposed best friend stabbed you with silver and witch hazel, thereby dangerously weakening you and offered you up as pig for slaughter to a man as trustworthy as the devil. Who then proceeded to stab you with a silver dagger and left you for the dead. Damon didn't do anything to save you."

"Exactly. He did not do anything." her features hardened, a glowering look on her face as she continued, "this man here is the reason I am alive. Not Damon. So leave. I am not going to help that demonic son of a bitch."

Understanding that she could never get a solution from Maeve, Elena turned to Klaus, "Klaus please, give me your blood. I need to help Damon."

"My blood? Why?" asked Klaus playing along the game that Maeve started.

"Her so-called pack member bit Damon." informed Elena crossing her arms. She threw a deadly glare at Maeve before looking at Klaus. Her eyes turned pleading just as they turned to Klaus making Maeve scoff and turn her head away.

"If so then he should be dead." said Klaus looking at Maeve as he didn't have an answer either. "It's been a week."

"Something's off about it. He's healing and getting worse at the same time." explained Bonnie. "Please help him."

Bonnie's plea and her explanation made Maeve fall into a fit of loud obnoxious laughter. Her laugh made Elena and Bonnie feel insulted if not humiliated standing in the room.

"Hey...uh, Nik...do you want to know an interesting fact about us Lycans?" asked Maeve rhetorically. "Your blood is not the cure for a Lycan's bite."

A shocked gasp left Elena's mouth, even Bonnie's lips parted in shock. "What?" asked Elena. "What are you trying to say?"

Maeve set the bottle down on the table and walked over to Elena. "What I am trying to say is that he...Klaus's blood is not the answer to saving Damon."

"Then what is?" asked Bonnie, now standing beside Elena.

"My blood." Klaus raised both his brows holding back an amused smile at the information. He had not known about this particular fact but to him it seemed as though it was justice.

"Maeve...please, you have to help him. Wasn't he your best friend?" pleaded Elena.

"Exactly, I thought he was. But best friends don't abuse the other, use the other, leave them for dead." Elena shook her head, an uncontrollable level of anger surging through her,

"You are truly evil."

"Evil isn't born, Elena. Evil is created." spat Maeve in a dangerously calm voice. "And the makers of this unforgiving villain are Damon Salvatore, Stefan Salvatore and Elena Gilbert." she stepped away looking down at the floor and then at Bonnie. "I am sure you did everything you thought was right. Now, say your goodbyes. Leave."

Having no choice in the matter, both stormed out of the mansion with a newfound rage and death wish for Maeve.

Maeve took a sharp breath through her nose and turned around, "I did things right, right?"

"I have to say, this new Maeve is interesting." he praised her. "What you did was right." she grinned at his appraisal. "Is it true or did you just make it up for her?"

"The cure part? Nope. Its true. The cure for a Lycan's bite is the blood of the Alpha to which pack that particular Lycan belongs. Since Ace is a part of my pack. My blood becomes the cure."

"But you are not crowned yet. You share the title with your brother."

"Correct." said Maeve, walking to the table and taking the bottle of bourbon, "So technically, an exception...his blood can also cure Damon."

Klaus hummed in response, "I know of Lycans. But I don't know much about them." he said resuming his previous seat on the couch, "Why is it prolonging his death?"

"Because the venom is trying to force him to transition into a Lycan but his healing is forbidding it." Klaus drew a blank face at her response. Maeve chuckled deliriously. she poured the bourbon into Klaus's glass and handed it to him before taking a seat next to him.

"Let me explain. Lycan's can turn humans into Lycans." Klaus spluttered out some of his bourbon hearing Maeve.

"Dude!" exclaimed Maeve. Her eyes were wide staring at Klaus who composed himself. "Are you okay?"

"Yes. What do you mean turn humans?"

Maeve took another sip of the bourbon before continuing, "I won't go into the details of the mythic story...okay? So basically Goddess Seline created the first werewolves. They had eight children. Seven in their arrogance and boastful nature decided to form their own packs, which are now the seven main werewolf packs. The son that stayed with Seline, was loyal to her, was granted special wishes, abilities by her. That son was named Wyrm. Wyrm and his descendants became the Lycans worldwide, forming their own packs, etc. He could turn any willing human into a Lycan. See now the process of turning into a Lycan is quite difficult albeit short...depending on who the human is at heart. A brave one will power through in an hour, while a comparatively weaker one would spend at least six hours going through the process of transformation. It is possible for the human to change into a Lycan and survive the transition, sometimes the human unfortunately dies in the process." Maeve paused for a moment, before continuing,

"In case of Damon...anatomically speaking, he is a human. So because anatomically he is human, the venom is acting like it would do to a human. But since Damon is a vampire, his immune system is stronger than a human. So its like two bulls clashing horns together. So that is why Damon is fighting against himself; healing and worsening at the same time." Maeve looked at the glass of bourbon she was holding, before placing it on the side table.

Klaus remained silent, soaking in the information. "You are making him feel pain like you did for the week." he concluded.

"Yes. I want him to feel pain like I did. I want him to understand my pain, what I went through when he betrayed me...all for that bitch." Maeve snarled.

"I think you are doing a wonderful job!" her gushing smile was for the amusement she felt in Damon's pain.
