20. Better now

Maeve sat inside a diner with a cold bag pressed to her head. Her eyes still drooped with black bags under her eyes. A tray was pushed in front of her carrying a plate of pancakes with butter on top it with a cup of coffee next to it.

"I feel like death." said Maeve, stretching the syllables.

"I fed you my blood. It seems it hasn't had any effects on you." noted Klaus, taking a sip of coffee from his own cup.

"It has. Just the after effects of the silver. Think of it as hangover." she tried explaining. "On to another point, why are we here? Shouldn't we be in Mystic Falls, murdering the one who's to stay dead?"

"We should be, but you need food. After what happened last night, you need to have some food in you."

Maeve nodded along. "Wh──where's he?"

"Inside the truck. I have compelled a man to keep snapping his neck just as he so much as stirs." informed Klaus, keeping it short and summed up.

She hated herself for trusting those who didn't deserve to be trusted. She hated that she had let them walk all over her.

"Hey." Maeve lifted up her head to see Rebekah standing by the table. Maeve shifted inside letting Rebekah slide into the booth to sit next to her.

"What exactly happened in Mystic Falls? I mean, torturing you with Silver was a pretty terrible move." began Rebekah slicing a piece of the pancake for herself. "What all went down?"

"I'll tell you all, just not now. I need to not be bloodthirty because all I want right now is rip through people until all that is left is their shreds."

Rebekah grabbed Maeve's hands ignoring her indirect request to be left alone. Maeve felt a quick sharp pain in her head before the entire year at Mystic Falls flashed before her eyes. Maeve gasped snatching her hands away from Rebekah. Her eyes net Rebekah's that now looked glassed with rage.

"She looked through my memories!" complained Maeve looking over at Klaus. "I didn't know you could do that!" whispered Maeve, shocked.

"Yes we can." answered Rebekah instead. "How could you not see what they were doing?"

"Right. Only you were left to lecture me. Elijah did it, this one here──did it. Now you." Maeve slumped back in her seat. "I am sorry I put my trust in the wrong people. I am sorry I cared. I won't anymore." She looked at Klaus,

"You once told me that love is a vampire's greatest weakness. I see it now. Caring about a world that doesn't deserve it only hurts us. Thank you for being a better friend, acquaintance...whatever you want to say than them. I realise my mistakes now."

"Well! Sooner the better." smiled Klaus cheering his cup of coffee.

"Thanks for not killing me." she said smiling tiredly at Klaus.

"I don't have a reason to kill you. If anything I am glad I've got you on my team."

"Is he really being nice to me just like that or has the sun risen from the west?"

"I think both." joked Rebekah.

"Like one of you was not enough." said Klaus, grumpily.

"You know you've grown to like me." Maeve said teasingly. All three laughed following Maeve's words. As thankful as she was the first time Maeve Kalon strolled into the town of Mystic Falls, she was more thankful now being in company of two originals.

Maeve laughter died down in a split second, her smile faltering as an unnerved scared look glazed over like a storm. "What is it?" asked Rebekah growing cautious suddenly.

"I'm dead." muttered Maeve keeping her eyes still on a figure that just walked into the diner.

"Who's he?" Klaus turned around to see who it was that Rebekah referred to.

"My brother."

"So? go talk to him."

"I may have told him I was on a job of being a local tour guide for foreign travellers. So basically been lying to him all summer. For him I am currently in Chicago." revealed Maeve reluctantly, her eyes straining on Ezekiel. Maeve slouched in her seat trying to hide herself as much as she could. But it was all a vain attempt. He did turn her way. His demeanor did change. His brows furrowed first before a betrayed anger flashed making his eyes turn red.

Maeve dropped the act seeing it have no success and returned to sit appropriately in the seat. She waited with her head hung low for Ezekiel Kalon to March across from the counter to their booth and bombard her with numerous questions.

"Hello sister." she felt a lump in her throat hearing the calming voice. Maeve looked up with a small smile at her brother,

"Hi Zeke."

"Are these your guests you're helping?" he asked her, crossing his arms.

Klaus took his chance, with a smirk and raised his hand to introduce himself, "I am Klaus Mikaelson. Pleasure."

"And I am Rebekah Mikaelson."

"As in the originals, right?" his confirmation was not for himself but a disguised question for Maeve to answer.

"I can explain." began Maeve, Defensive raising her hands.

"Would love to hear it. If you two wouldn't mind, I'd like a word with her privately." Rebekah slid off and onto her feet to let Maeve get out. Rebekah noticed the small grimace on Maeve's face as she got out of the booth.

"Just..." Rebekah stopped the two, "talk by the bench outside. Maeve shouldn't stand for long. She hasn't healed yet." said Rebekah, worriedly.

Ezekiel's eyes met Maeve's that stared guiltily at him, "what's she saying?"

"Let's go. I'll explain." ushered Maeve leading Ezekiel outside of the diner. The blue of the sky was clear of any clouds. Sun was warm and a pleasant breeze flowed.

Ezekiel patiently sat on the bench listening as Maeve narrated everything that happened since their last phone call. He didn't stop her mid sentence or react in any way. He let her explain everything. From the situations, events to what she felt and what she realised.

"Is that the truck?" asked Ezekiel pointing to a truck parked in the far corner. Maeve nodded unsure of why he asked that.

"Go back to Klaus. We'll talk later." that was all Ezekiel said before he stormed away. Maeve sat stunned of the interaction. She followed behind Ezekiel going against what he told her to do.

She watched from a distance as he opened the truck and jumped inside. Maeve's eyes widened when it dawned on her what he was going to do. Maeve ran faster than ever and jumped inside the truck. Maeve's hands began sweating she saw Ezekiel holding Stefan against the side of the truck. Stefan struggled still recovering from having his neck being snapped continuously.

"Zeke."

"Shut up!" shouted Ezekiel, uncharacteristically. "For once Moony, shut up and let me!" it silenced Maeve. She let Ezekiel do what he wanted to do.

Ezekiel shook Stefan a little, just so he could talk. "My sister cares about people. Who gave you shitheads the right to abuse that?" he hit Stefan. A crack echoed inside the truck. Ezekiel punched Stefan repeatedly until Stefan had a broken nose and bloodied torn lip.

Maeve placed a hand on Ezekiel's shoulder. Ezekiel stopped punching Stefan but snapped his neck again. He turned to his sister. His eyes were red with tears. His nostrils flared. For a moment the siblings stared at each other. Before Maeve could apologize like she wanted to, Ezekiel took a single step ahead and wrapped his hands around Maeve. He hugged her like he thought he could never again. Maeve closed her eyes feeling the comfort and security of her older brother.

"I am sorry I didn't listen to you. I am sorry I didn't listen to Pops." said Maeve, her voice trembling. Ezekiel tightened the hug instead of verbally responding.

"What matters to me now is that you are safe."

"I am going to show Damon what it means to be a Kalon. I will make him pay for disrespecting Pops." said Maeve, vengeance clear in her tone. Ezekiel pulled away finally, a significant coldness in his stare.

"He did not disrespect Pops. He disrespected you. The future Alpha of the biggest Lycan pack in America. He insulted you. Show him just what happens when you do that." a silent promise was made between the next in line crown Alphas of Kalon pack.

"I know you won't move from Mystic Falls." began Ezekiel, "I also know something is different now. I cannot dictate your life. I want you to be safe."

"I'll protect her." interrupted them a voice from outside the truck. Rebekah stood there, her eyes squinted from the sun.

"I don't need saving. I can handle myself." Maeve walked out of the truck and jumped down. Ezekiel followed behind.

"Loads good that was if you didn't see the obvious. Don't worry──" rebekah looked at Ezekiel, "I'll protect her in Mystic Falls."

"An original around you?" Ezekiel raised his hand toward Rebekah, "I wish you luck."

"What's going on?" asked Klaus, now standing next to Rebekah. He eyed Stefan who laid lifeless on the floor of the truck. He noticed a shadow of blood on a part of Stefan's face that was visible.

"What did you do?" asked Klaus, his eyes falling on Ezekiel.

Ezekiel shrugged his shoulders, "he hurt my sister. What was I supposed to do? Killing him would be mercy."

"I don't agree with you. Killing is always the better answer."

"You'd know all about it." admonished Rebekah with a roll of her eyes. "You've killed almost every guy who's looked at me."

"None of those suitors were worthy of you, Rebekah so I simply didn't let them try." said Klaus making seem to be a simple task he put into action.

"I agree with you there." laughed Ezekiel making Maeve's jaw drop open.

"Unbelievable." She shook her head turning to Rebekah, "older brothers."

"Unfortunately darling we don't get to pick them." complained Rebekah, "we just have to learn to live with them."

Kalon was a long line of Lycans blessed with charms that made them likeable to anyone they met. It was either their handsome looks or earthly brown eyes that conjured the affection in the audience.

Maeve yawned from her place on the bleachers inside the gym of Mystic Falls high school watching as Klaus forced the teenagers to scurry off. Two teenagers, she learnt named Chad and Dana stood, being compelled by Klaus, on one feet. Both held a terrified gaze that was watching the scene uncover before them.

Her mind was pondering over the sacrifice. She kept repeating in a loop whatever she remembered Elijah had told her.

Elena stood in the middle of the gym frantically looking at the original who, however looked calm had brought along him coldness that ensured everyone's proper attention.

"Where's Stefan? What did you do to him?" asked Elena

"Stefan's on a timeout." He replied with his usual smirk.

Elena whipped her head toward Maeve, "You're helping him? How could you? He is evil."

"I don't have to explain why I do whatever I do to you. Besides, we have nothing against each other for him to snap my neck or suck me dry." Maeve asserted. Klaus smiled wickedly at her words. "But...if I have to say something." she dramatically stood up and walked to stand next to Klaus,

"I am helping a friend of mine. A good friend." Elena's mouth fell agape hearing Maeve. Before anyone could say anything more the gym door opened again. Bonnie Bennett and Matt Donovan strolled in with bright smiles on their faces. When they looked ahead around the room, their smiles immediately faltered.

"Bonnie get out of here!" yelled Elena warning the witch but it was too late.

"I was wondering when you would show up. Now we can get started." Klaus said speeding in front of Bonnie, "Dana, why don't you relax. You and Chad can sit tight." He commanded looking over his shoulder quickly at the two teenagers.

He turned back to Bonnie who stood daringly in front of him. "It's been proved that you're the reason Elena is still walking around alive."

"That's right. If you wanna blame someone, blame me." She replied putting on a brave face. But, her posture gave away that even she was slightly terrified of the situation.

"There's no need for blame, Love. It's just that your witchy interference seem to have caused some undesirable side effects. And since you caused the problem. I'm gonna have you find the fix." his words ended just as the door opened once again as Rebekah dragged in Tyler who struggled in her hold.

"Get off me." said Tyler, struggling to break free.

"Hush now." patronized Rebekah pushing him in front of Klaus.

"I'd like you all to meet my sister. Rebekah. A word of warning, she can be quite mean."

"Don't be an ass." Rebekah snapped.

"Leave him alone." Elena yelled.

"Again──" maeve started, "words are not enough here. As manipulative as you are Elena, here you might need the ability of compulsion to get what you want."

He grabbed Tyler and turned to once again look at Bonnie, "I'm going to make this very simple. Every time I attempt to turn a werewolf into a vampire hybrid, they die during the transition."

"Take my word for it. It's Zombieland." Klaus bit into his wrist and forcefully fed his blood to Tyler.

"I need you to find a way to save my hybrids, Bonnie." He said, staring right at Bonnie. "and for Tyler's sake. You better hurry." He snapped his neck. everyone stepped back in shock. Tyler fell limp on the floor.

"He killed him." said Matt looking without a blink at Tyler.

"Not exactly. Klaus's blood will turn him into a Vampire." informed Elena.

"And if Bonnie is successful he'll live through his transition. Go on then. Fetch your grimoires and enchantments and what not. I'll hold onto Elena for safe keeping." Klaus assured. Both, Matt and Bonnie scurried off in search of a solution.

"So this is the latest Doppelganger. The original one was prettier." Rebekah deduced looking at Elena.

"Really? What was she like? I don't know less whiny?"

Rebekah nodded her head sideways, "more or less. I mean from what you showed me, it seems to me that she definitely whined less. Coward and player. But no, she didn't whine as much as I saw."

"Yep." nodded along Maeve, "she was definitely prettier."

Elena looked insulted at the conversation the two women held describing her and her previous version.

"Why don't you take the wolf someplace else?" asked Klaus. Rebekah sneered at her brother but grabbed Tyler by his ankle and dragged him away.

"Just ignore her. Petty little thing." He whispered to Elena. Maeve narrowed her eyes on Klaus. He grimaced before letting out a grunt.

"Maeve!" he called her name strongly.

"What? You don't get to call her that." Maeve strolled to the bleachers again, settling on the topmost place. Klaus climbed up right behind her and took a seat next to her.

"How long before you-know-who gets here?" she whispered to Klaus.

"If Rebekah is here, not long." said Klaus, resting his elbows on his knees. "Your brother did a number on him."

"There's a reason anger is the number one reason for murder...or you know──hate crime." Maeve responded nonchalantly. Both sat in comfortable silence before she broke it again, "I've been meaning to ask, how does it feel to have a friend?"

"Well she's an irritating sod to start off." Maeve playfully pushed him, a smile coating her face as it did to Klaus.

Elena watched the two interact like they had been friends for a long while. All it did was build up more envy and anger inside of her for Maeve. For Elena, Maeve was always the villain. An evil creature who held exponential power.

"You did not just say that!" she retorted. "You know the last time we were in this room, it was the sixties." she joked.

"Worst decade. Worst bargain. Worst deal I ever made." teased Klaus making Maeve grimace.

"Ditto. Couldn't agree more."

The door opened again. Maeve glanced its way to see Stefan. A phantom sting coursed through her body. Involuntarily Maeve grabbed the sleeve of Klaus's white shirt. Her eyes were stationery on Stefan who took steps inside the gym.

"Come to save your damsel mate?" asked Klaus placing his hand on top of Maeve's  a form of reassurance that she won't be hurt.

"Elena means nothing to me anymore. And whatever you ask of me...I will do."

"Fair enough. Let's drink on it." Klaus jumped off the bleachers and pointed to two compelled teenagers. "Kill them. What are you waiting for? Kill them."

"No! Stefan, don't. He's not going to hurt me. He already said..." Klaus cut off Elena by slapping her hard sending her to the floor.

Maeve snorted loudly, "you have no idea how many times I imagined that!"

Stefan growled showing off his fangs and attacked Klaus. Klaus being stronger held him off by holding him by his throat.

"She means nothing to you? Your lies just keep piling up."

Stefan fought his hold on him trying his best to divert Klaus away from Elena. "Let her go! I'll do whatever you want, you have my word!"

"Your word doesn't mean much. I lived by your word all summer, during which time I never had to resort to this..." Klaus looked straight into his eyes ready to compel.

"Stop fighting."

"Don't do this, don't do this." begged Stefan.

"I didn't want to. All I wanted was your allegiance. Now I'm going to have to take it." Klaus reiterated.

"Don't...Don't..."

"You will do exactly as I say when I say it. You will not run, you will not hide, you will simply just obey."

"No. Stefan!" Elena whimpered. Maeve slapped her forehead shaking her head sideways.

"Now kill them. Ripper." Stefan speeded to the girl and began to drain her of her blood. Elena watched in horror as Stefan ripped through the girl's neck.

Klaus watched in fascination as Stefan fed on the two teenagers. "Always nice to see a vampire in his true element." Klaus said, "The species has become such a broody lot."

"No. You did this to him." Elena said, not taking her eyes off of Stefan.

"I only invited him to the party, love. He's the one dancing on the table." Klaus replied.

The door opened once again. This time a furious looking Rebekah stormed in holding a phone in her hand. "Where is it?" demanded Rebekah. "Where's my necklace?"

"What are you talking about?" asked Klaus taking the phone from his sister's hand.

"She has my necklace. Look." said Rebekah pointing to the photo on the phone.

"Hold on," paused Maeve looking from Elena to Rebekah, "her necklace. The supposed symbol of Stefan and Elena's eternally nauseating love is ac──actu...actually your necklace?" Maeve bursted into obnoxious laughter. "This is gold!"

Rebekah walked around Klaus to Elena, "where is it?"

"I don't have it anymore." said Elena, shortly.

Rebekah fumed in rage and bit into Elena's neck. Klaus pulled her off Elena immediately. "Knock it off."

Maeve placed her hand on top of Rebekah's, "we'll find it. Don't worry."

"Make her tell me where it is, Nik!" ordered Rebekah, impatiently.

Klaus returned his attention to Elena, "where is the necklace, sweetheart. Be honest." the coldness in his voice mortified Elena even more.

"I'm telling the truth. I don't have it. Katherine took it."

"Katerina. Of course. Well, that's unfortunate. If we had the necklace it'd make the things a whole lot easier for your witch." Klaus thought for a second before he reached a conclusion, "Since we're doing this the hard way, let's put a clock on it, shall we?" He switched on the gym clock and directed his next words at Stefan, "twenty minutes. If Bonnie hasn't found a solution by then, I want you to feed again. Only this time, I want you to feed on the Elena. You know you want to."

"Klaus. Don't do this to him." Elena whined.

"No one leaves. If she tried to run, fracture her spine." Klaus instructed. He looked at Maeve who was craning her neck to get his attention, in discretion. Maeve nodded her head towards the door and began walking away. Klaus followed behind her and so did Rebekah.

"Where are you going?" asked Maeve seeing Rebekah walk away.

"I think it's the chemistry laboratory or something." Maeve nodded along. Klaus followed Maeve as she led him to an empty corridor away from the gym.

"You didn't have to do that. You know?" She said stopping suddenly and turning to face him.

"Of course I had to."

"Drama queen." Maeve scoffed. She shook her head and leaned on the lockers.

"How are you feeling? Has the hangover gone?" asked Klaus.

"Yeah. I'm better now. Actually, much better than any other time." she revealed. "Now, explain to me something. Elijah told us what the sacrifice was going to be like. I want to know your experience. You killed a vamp, a wolf and then doppelbitch. Correct?"

"Yes."

"And...when did you feel the complete transition? Like the feeling of bone breaking, free mind thrill of being a wolf."

"I guess after I drank Elena's." Maeve nodded with a hum. She looked up at Klaus who was unsure of her questions, "why do you ask?"

"What if...I mean it's just a theory. What if Elena's blood is the solution?"

"Possible."

Maeve stood up straight, "I mean obviously whoever it was that put the curse on you would know someday along the years you'd break it. Then would make more of your kind...excuse the language. But think about it, doesn't it make sense?" Maeve paused to see of he would say something, "think about it, these witches don't like anyone that goes against their version of nature and purity."

"Let's test it out."

"Go and test it. I'll check on Rebekah." she said and walked away. She walked through the long silent corridors until something looked familiar.

She pushed open the door to see Rebekah settled on a stool by a table. Her eyes roved around the room falling on another blonde in the room.

"Maeve!" she shrieked in surprise. Maeve leapt to hug Caroline tightly.

"Caroline! How are you?"

"Me?" Caroline pulled away and started hitting Maeve continuously. "What about you? You left! Not a single word. Where were you?"

"Long story." Caroline gave her a significant look,

"Does it have anything to do with Damon? And, or Stefan?" Maeve stayed silent and turned away.

"I swear to god you are unbelievable!" shouted Caroline frustratedly.

"If we are talking about being unbelievable, Stefan stabbed Maeve with Silver. It is lethal to Lycans." added on Rebekah.

"What did I ever do to you? Ratting me out like this?" Maeve turned to Rebekah with a look of betrayal.

Rebekah didn't respond. She resumed going through the phone in hand trying to get used to the technology. Maeve turned to Caroline again. Caroline held a sorrowful look.

"Don't Caroline. I've got quite a taunting earful from Klaus, this blondie here and my brother. I've learnt from my mistakes."

All that mattered to both of them was the no longer would Maeve cater to any one in Mystic Falls except Caroline. It was a relief to a handful people that she was no longer going to play by the rules of a Salvatore.

Klaus barged into the laboratory soon holding a vial of Elena's blood. It was clear that Maeve's theory worked. Elena's blood was the solution he needed.

Maeve had not seen Klaus quiver in any emotion other than uncontrollable anger. She stood behind him outside the hospital watching intently as he stumbled back in well masked fear as Damon muttered a name unknown to her that released him from Klaus's hold.

"Don't you want to know about your friend Mikael?" was the question Damon asked whilst being in a chokehold. "Yeah. Katherine and I found him. Consider it our leverage." he had challengingly added. Damon gained a significant confidence when Klaus speeded away. His eyes met with Maeve's who remained unmoving.

"Don't go anywhere." he instructed Maeve. "We need to talk." Damon stomped inside the hospital and came back five minutes later carrying a barely conscious Elena in his arms.

Furiously Maeve followed behind them and waited as patiently as she could as he drove to the Boarding house. Damon ignored Maeve blatantly as he aided Elena inside.

Inside the Parlor, Elena sat on the couch taking the glass of bourbon that Damon offered her.

"Let's cut this short, shall we?" said Maeve, arrogantly. "The grimoire that you took from my apartment like you think you are entitled to."

"I will when you tell me why is it that you have gotten so cosy with him? The original."

"She's become his friend." revealed Elena. "She helped him find me." Damon looked from Elena and back at Maeve.

"How could you?"

"How could I?" reiterated Maeve. She punched Damon hard sending him on the ground with a broken jaw. Elena stood up in shock when she heard the crack of a bone.

"Damon!" shrieked Elena much like before. Maeve forcefully shoved Elena back on the couch with an angered look glassing her eyes.

"Shut it you whiny baby!" she enraged. Maeve turned to Damon again, "how could you? All I did since day one was help your stupid ass and all I got in return was scowling looks, doubts and mistreatment that I thought was just you being moody! All I did was try to help you and all you did was──" she kicked him sending him on his back. "Manipulate me. Abuse my powers. Make me do things I didn't want to do." At the end of each sentence Maeve kicked him again and again. She vented out every bit of her anger.

"Maeve stop it, you're hurting him!" whined Elena. Maeve whipped her head around to look at Elena who was on her feet now staring at the two of them mortified of the hybrid. Maeve prowled closer to Elena,

"Are you scared of me?"

"Yes." said Elena, meekly. Maeve gave her a malicious smile in response before replying in a stone cold voice that sent a single shiver town Elena's spine,

"Good. Let that be the only emotion you feel for me. Because the only thing I feel when it comes to you is vendetta." Maeve turned around and walked closer to Damon who still laid sprawled on the floor. Maeve grabbed him by his collar and pulled him ingo a sitting position. She squatted down to meet him at an eye level,

"You know what it felt like when I joined the dots that Elena was alive? Or when you didn't look at me twice when you came to Chicago and didn't even ask about me? Or when your brother let accused me of being biased and spiteful? It felt like I was stabbed through my spine with a butchers knife and it kept twisting and twirling around until it went numb."

"Maeve I──" Maeve sent another blow to his face and Damon fell to the floor again. He clutched his nose that was broken and bled into his hand.

"Don't want your apology. Don't need your half assed anything anymore. I want revenge. I want you to pay with pain. And I promise you I will make you pay for every moment that you manipulated me, used me, disrespected me." Maeve paused scanning the tall bookshelf. She noticed the grimoire she looked for placed between an encyclopaedia and hardbound version of a novel. She walked to the shelf and picked the grimoire.

With one last look at the two she decided to leave. But not before one last threat, "My name is Maeve Kalon. I am the soon-to-be crowned Alpha of America's biggest Lycan pack. The Kalons. You pay a hefty fine for going against our omegas. You have no idea what's coming your way."
