2. Personal Matters

The morning that followed the hassle and bustle of the bloody night Maeve drove her car straight to the address she received in a text message.

Maeve parked her car in the large driveway in front of the white house. She grinned at the sight of the building.

"You Mikaelsons and your obsession with large buildings." Maeve took the liberty of welcoming herself into the building.

"MIKAELSONS! STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND COME SEE ME!" she yelled at the top of the voice.

A second later with a flash of wind, Maeve was taken in a tight hug. Maeve wrapped her arms around as well and smiled.

"Rebekah! My third favourite blonde!" she pulled away immediately looking at Maeve offended.

"Excuse me, third favourite?"

"Yes. Taylor Swift, Caroline Forbes and then you, Rebekah Mikaelson."

"I still thing I should be second. Taylor Swift I agree." Maeve giggled shaking hef head. She linked her hands with Rebekah and began walking further into the house

"Nice place. Ever heard of laying low or you know, a nice apartment?"

"House this big to fit in all our egos." Maeve laughed at Rebekah's snide remark.

"Tell me...what is it that you have found yourself in?" asked Maeve. The two entered the large parlor room of the house. Maeve stiffened immediately but not because of the surprising presence of Hayley but because of the elderly woman standing in the room.

Her curly hair sat firmly combed on her head like a crown tied with a bandana. Her nose was crinkled upward in disgust. Maeve couldn't make out if that was because of her or was the woman accustomed to keeping it that way.

"You." the woman said in a distasteful voice.

"Me." Maeve snarkily answered pointing two thumbs at herself. "What are you doing here?"

"She's your friend?" asked the woman, glancing at Rebekah with a questioning look and raised eyebrows.

"Don't speak to her about me. My reason for being here isn't any of your business."

"As you say, Queen." The woman sarcastically said and decided to leave. Maeve watched her exit the room, her gaze burning sharply into the woman. Her eyes wandered over to Hayley just as the witch was out of her line of view.

Both looked at each other for a few seconds before Maeve turned to Rebekah.

"What's──" she looked to her side to find the place empty. Rebekah had situated herself on the couch with the laptop on her lap. "what's Hayley doing here?"

"She's carrying my child." revealed Klaus strutting into the room. Maeve snapped her head around. She dumbfoundedly glanced at Klaus who smiled back at her.

"Your....you──your child?" she repeated dumbstruck with the information. "Hold on... you're going to be a father? A child. Mikaelson heir?" Maeve took a moment to compose herself. "How is this even possible?"

"Half werewolf hybrid miracle." replied Klaus.

"Wow. This is gold." said Maeve. She placed a hand on his shoulder gazing at him softly. "Congratulations. You'll be a good father."

"Hey Maeve..." began Hayley in a small voice. "Thanks. For that day." Maeve smiled remembering what she meant.

"Don't mention it. Glad you decided against it." Hayley smiled one last time before she exited the room.

"What's she talking about?"

"Oh...some time back I met her here in the city. French Quarter holding a glass of wolfsbane. Obviously the vampires approached her but I shooed them away."

"That was you?" asked Rebekah astonished. "She didn't mention it."

"Because I asked her not to. The witches here don't know that I don't have my magic anymore."

Klaus gave her a forced smile, "fine. Moving on, what is your relation with Marcel?"

"Uh...friendship?"

"It didn't seem like it yesterday when you two were dancing together." answered Rebekah, her eyes scrutinizing Maeve.

"I was meeting a very dangerous man behind closed doors with the possibility of him ending me. He's just protective of me." Maeve took a seat on the arm chair, still facing Klaus and Rebekah.

"You never told us about him?"

"Uh...you never asked the source. Besides...I'm pretty sure at some point I mentioned Marcel to your other brother."

"Kol?" asked Rebekah.

"The one with a stick up his ass." prompted Maeve rudely. Klaus gazed questioningly at her while Rebekah only sympathized. Clearly only one Mikaelson sibling other than Elijah knew the complete story.

"He never said anything."

"Pick it up with him. Where is he anyway? Shouldn't he be here tailing your every move or some shit?"

Rebekah rolled her eyes. "Nik daggered him and bartered him to Marcel."

Maeve's eyes went wide hearing Rebekah. "I'm not surprised with his actions but why didn't Marcel say anything?"

"Maybe he wanted you to stay on his good side." Maeve studied Klaus's face for a whole minute, pouting her lips as she tried understanding the original hybrid.

"What are you hiding from me?"

"Nothing."

"A lot actually. Your face is diabolical──more than ever."

Klaus and Rebekah exchanged looks. "People! I deserve to know what's happening here. Spill your beans or I'll go ask Marcel."

"He doesn't know." said Klaus, a little too quickly. "You want to know, I will tell you."

"Begin."

"The witches have us in their hold. The witch named Sophie had linked herself to my child and is manipulating me to bring Marcel down." Maeve stiffened hearing Klaus explain his situation. "I bartered Elijah, so I could gain his trust."

"No!" yelled Maeve. "Do whatever it is you want to but you will not bring Marcel down."

"Maeve the witches want something that Marcel has."

"And they won't get it. You hear me?"

Klaus approached Maeve and bent forward with one hand resting on the back of the armchair and the other on the arm, "We don't have a choice. We are talking about the life of my child, here."

Maeve sat up, glaring angrily at Klaus. "And I am telling you that you are not going to help the witches anymore."

"Maeve they could kill──"

"I'll get the unlinking spell and Maverick will perform it." snapped back Maeve. "But the witches do not get what they want."

"What is it that they want?"

"A teenage witch. They want to complete a heinous ritual of sacrificing young witches to strengthen their bond or some fucked up connection to the underworld of death people."

"So this ritual will make them more powerful."

"Yes. Frankly I'm actually surprised Sophie even volunteered to help because it was she who told Marcel about it and he helped her stop the ritual."

Klaus hummed in response before wording, "What's your beef with the witches then?"

"Jane Anne Deveraux is the only witch who walked out alive that day." she glanced at Klaus who understood what she meant.

"Now what?" asked Rebekah choosing to skip past the question of asking about what Maeve meant.

"I'll get the unlinking spell but the witches do not get what they want."

"Agnes just saw you...how are you going to stop that?"

"Marcel knows I used to date Elijah. He'll probably ask why I am here, but who gives a shit? By the way...how long have you known him?" asked Maeve. "He said you were old friends?"

"Friend he said?" repeated Klaus mockingly. "I'd say for someone he was more than a friend." He glanced at Rebekah who avoided looking at him. Maeve looked in-between the two before she visibly gagged.

"Ugh...that bad taste in men, Rebekah? I thought better of you." Rebekah rolled her eyes and resumed looking through her laptop.

"Seriously is that all there is to know about you and Marcel?"

"Nik raised him." informed Rebekah, without taking her eyes away from the screen. "Saved him from his bastard father, named him."

"Oh wow! What?" the young Lycan had her eyes wide and astonishingly gazing at Klaus.

"So let me get all of this straight──" she shifted in the seat unnerved slightly. "You raised this boy into a man and you──" she pointed at Rebekah, "dated him? You saw the boy grow up, must have helped in doing it and yet you'd date him?"

"Aren't we straying away from the topic at hand? Marcel has Elijah and I want to know where. Do you know of any place where he could have kept him?"

Maeve thought for a few moments. "Hmmm, I don't think so. He's got a couple of places all around the city where he keeps his secrets."

"Great so it's like finding a needle in a haystack." commented Klaus with a roll of his eyes.

"At least I'm trying to find him. Unlike you." Rebekah snapped back.

"Tell me something. What is it that the witches want that Marcel has?"

"Na uh uh uh nope. Don't even think about it." Maeve shot back immediately. "Don't even attempt at thinking it."

"What do you think I'm thinking about?"

"Using whatever he has as leverage over to witches to gain your momentum on the city. Didn't you do that enough in Mystic Falls."

"We built this city, Maeve!" Klaus nearly screamed at her. It felt like a screaming match. Both as stubborn as the other and adamant as well. "We built it, called it our home for many years and he took it. So, yes I want it back."

"Goodness fuck your conquesting habits are toxic if not absolutely felony-like. You listen to me very carefully, Niklaus Mikaelson, you bat an eyelash at that sweet secret of Marcel's and I will find a way to dagger you and keep you stacked in a crypt for a sum total of years of how much long you've kept them daggered."

Rebekah snorted at the threat. "Can you do that anyway? I swear I'd get you anything you want for the rest of your life." she promised.

"Maeve..." Klaus decided to change the topic yet again. "Fine. I won't do anything other than what I was already planning on doing. But you have to promise you won't go babbling about this to your new best friend."

"Of course I wouldn't. Have some trust in me you fool!"

"Bourbon?" Klaus offered her, but he didn't wait for her response. Instead he poured her a glass along with his.

"You want to know my connection with Marcel, right?"

"It would certainly help to understand why he is so interested in you and how come Lycans roam around the city when werewolves live in exile?"

"Marcel is Ezekiel's best friend. Both met in 05' when the hurricane hit New Orleans. They've been friends ever since."

"I don't need your life story." Klaus interrupted her abruptly. "Why do you not want Marcel to be dethroned? What were you doing at the charity event yesterday?"

Maeve downed the contents of her glass in one long sip. "Did Elijah tell you what happened at the tea or gala?"

"The misogyny? Yes, I pryed it out of him." Rebekah responded. She slapped the laptop shut and diverted her entire attention to Maeve.

"For the last five months, I've been relentlessly working to set my place in the Lycan world. Making Kalon's powerful and feared."

"But Kalon's are already the largest pack in America."

"Yes but with the announcement of me being an Alpha alongside Ezekiel is making many doubt the decision. Long story short, many Alphas from Europe have reached out to the council. The government of all Lycan packs and our Head Alpha seeking them to interfere in our business."

Maeve stared at the blank faces of both the originals. She chuckled lightly at the response. Maeve helped herself to another glass of bourbon and began yet another story.

"Somewhere in the mid-twelfth century, the Lycan packs then were becoming erratic──bloodthirsty. So seven strong Alphas banded together and prayed to Seline to show the right path. She didn't exactly respond but she just riddled them some words. So those seven took matters into their own hands and slaughtered the few waywards and established themselves as the supreme judiciary or Councilman."

"So all Alphas are answerable to them?"

"All packs. Nik, these Alphas, are chosen on the Accord of their strengths and abilities. They are the best from the best. Basically these men think that the council to interfere and force me and Zeke to fight for the throne." she sucked in a shuddering breath. "Fight to death."

"Elijah said that is not your plan."

"It's not. It never was. But if Council agrees and sides with these egoistic men, then yes, we will have to fight."

"Can't you do anything?" asked Rebekah growing scared for Maeve's life.

"That is what I've been doing. Slowly sucking out the life out of these men and ultimately they will be left with just their egos."

"And Marcel is helping you."

"Of course Rebekah. It isn't news that Lycan and vampires don't mingle. Being in the city is a perfect cover for me to execute my plan and go under their radar."

Maeve and Klaus mirrored each other's deviant smiles. "How far have you reached in your plans?"

"Close to a massive breakthrough. And that's why you cannot break Marcel. His empire is giving me, my plan and my mafia partner a shelter and incognition we need."

"Well, we'll see what can be done about that." Klaus lifted up the hand that held the glass of bourbon. "Looks like you are paying me that owed." said Klaus. Maeve read the diabolical twinkle in his eyes──which only motivated her to laugh out loud. Maeve Kalon had more members in her team to conquer the Lycan World.
