19. Self-Hate
Maeve strolled into the lobby area of the hotel. She fixed her hair once again and plugged in her iPod.
𝖱𝖺𝗉𝗉𝖾𝗋'𝗌 𝖣𝖾𝗅𝗂𝗀𝗁𝗍 𝖻𝗒 𝖲𝗎𝗀𝖺𝗋𝗁𝗂𝗅𝗅 𝗀𝖺𝗇𝗀 began through the earphones. Maeve stood leaning on a wall listening to the song, waiting for the rest of them to come out. The earphone in her right ear was snatched catching her attention. She looked to her right to see Rebekah standing there listening in.
"What kind of an absurd song is this?" Rebekah scowled handing her the earphone back.
"Only the most amazing rap ever written." defensively Maeve stated taking the earphone back. "Then again, can't blame you. The last music you heard was flapper music from twenties. Don't worry, we've got time, I'll introduce you to a wonder of music. Between you and me, today's music isn't all that happening."
"I'll have to take your word for it." Rebekah stepped around her and now in front, "so what's your story?"
"Story?"
"Yeah. Story. Stefan I understand...he's friend with Nik but you...what's your reason?"
"Long boring story."
"One that no longer is the same." added Klaus. "I am sure you two would have days to exchange your life stories, for now let's get on a move. We also have to visit the witch." Klaus walked away with wounding his arms around his back.
"He's been a stiff all summer. Is this because of what's happening or is it his personality trait?"
"More like the entire personality if you ask me." whispered back Rebekah.
Maeve empathetically held Rebekah's hands in hers and looked at her, "you poor child. It must have been insufferable having to handle all of that." she gestured at Klaus who now stood by the door, "I mean...one summer and I have thought of murdering him almost every other week if not day."
"Trust me I've had those thoughts myself a couple of times." Rebekah agreed with a giggle making even Maeve giggle along.
"I can hear you, you know." Klaus shouted making both cackle even loudly.
"Unfortunate. Close your ears." chastised Maeve poking her tongue out.
Stefan came out of his room not thirty seconds later putting a stop to an argument about to boil.
Inside a boutique in Chicago, Klaus stayed sprawled over a couch holding a glass of champagne. Stefan sat next to him having a glass himself.
Rebekah pushed aside the curtains and stepped out of the changing room with a scowl. "There has to be more to this dress."
"There's not." denoted Klaus least bit interested in Rebekah's search for dresses.
"So, the women in the twenty first century dress like prostitutes then." She retorted.
Maeve feigned hurt pressing a hand to her chest, "I am taking that to offence."
"Not you darling. You seem to have a fashion sense. You know I got dirty looks for wearing trousers." Rebekah added smiling at Maeve. Maeve was scouring through shelves finding a perfect match of an outfit for Rebekah.
"You were trousers. So, women today could wear nothing." Klaus commented.
"Men would prefer that" Maeve muttered but it didn't go unnoticed by supernatural hearing. She heard them chuckle at her blunt mumble but kept doing her work.
"What is this music? It sounds like a cable car accident." Rebekah complained.
"This is Dance music." Stefan explained.
"People dance to this?" Rebekah said in disbelief.
Maeve stepped forth from behind the aisles holding a few outfits in her arms, "told ya." Maeve handed Rebekah the clothes she had put together saying, "try these. They'd look good on you."
"Thank you Maeve. Why don't you pick an outfit for yourself?"
"No thanks. I've got enough as it is."
"Are we done?" Klaus grumbled.
"And why are you so grumpy?" Rebekah asked
"I needed one thing from you for my witch to find out why my hybrids are dying. Your necklace. And you lost it." Klaus said.
"I didn't lose it. It's just been missing for ninety years." Rebekah argued.
"Maybe if you had not daggered her perhaps, the necklace would be here but you did dagger her so I suggest shutting up." Maeve snapped narrowing her eyes at Klaus.
"Thank you. So, Stefan, what do you think?" Rebekah asked twirling a little.
"I like it." He complimented. Maeve scoffed rolling her eyes. She always knew when he was lying.
"What? I said I like it." He said.
"I can always tell when you're lying." Rebekah said walking back inside.
"Nice one. Good work." Klaus commented pouring another glass of champagne.
"You're the one who pulled out the dagger." Stefan defended.
"I heard that!" Rebekah shouted from the changing room.
"Alright, I am going to get some fresh air." He walked out.
"How long is it going to take?" Klaus groaned.
"Well, if you want to speed things up I suggest getting your arse up from that couch and helping her." Maeve replied.
"I much prefer being away from this shopping spree." Klaus smugly stated.
"Well, then I suggest closing that mouth and let the women work their magic." She said with a wicked grin.
"A nice fashion sense and a smart mouth. I like you." Rebekah genuinely smiled making even Maeve crack one.
"While she tries on the millionth dress, tell me..." Klaus sat up pouring a champagne glass for Maeve, "why are you eyes not yellow?"
"Because I am an Alpha." she told him nonchalantly before taking a sip of the champagne.
"But I am an Alpha." Maeve spit out the next sip of champagne into the glass hearing him. She coughed a bit, setting the glass on the table next to her and cackled out loud. Klaus shot her a strong significant look.
"Self proclaimed Alpha." Maeve corrected him. "I got this title because I am. You are a lone wolf, Klaus."
"I'll have my pack soon."
Maeve hummed in response, "you will. Then you'll become an Alpha but still, your eyes won't turn like mine."
"Like yours?" interrupted Rebekah stepping out of the dressing room again. This time wearing a white long top with a low cut and short jeans. "Show me."
Maeve eyed her outfit whistling softly, "now that is what I call a perfect beauty." Rebekah blushed at Maeve's compliment, "and to answer you..." Rebekah watched carefully, her eyes widening to see the blood red shade of Maeve's eyes.
"Beautiful." breathed out Rebekah. Maeve smiled lopsidedly.
"Thank you, Rebekah. No one's ever said that."
"Well they should."
"I see why Damon called you little devil, then." recalled Klaus.
"Yeah. Because of red eyes and the abominal ability to use magic with my claws out." satirized Maeve lowering her head.
Rebekah looked at her brother having no clue about what Maeve just said. "She's a Kalon and the last living Serene witch." he informed Rebekah.
"I thought they were myths. The Serene witch."
"Well they aren't. Here I am alive in front of you." Maeve told her. She turned to Klaus again, "about this necklace. If what Gloria is looking for is the magic of the necklace...shouldn't Rebekah have some of it. She only wore it for what? shy a few years to thousand?" klaus pondered over Maeve's suggestion. He opened his mouth to respond but Rebekah beat him to it,
"It most definitely can work. You're a genius."
"Thank you for the insight." Maeve beamed in response finishing up her champagne,
"What are friends for?" Klaus offered her a smile. Rebekah watched the interaction between the two growing curious,
"Is something going on between you two?" she asked pointing a finger from Maeve to Klaus.
"Absolutely not! I mean look at him──" she pointed a finger at Klaus, "would you date that?"
"Well if we are talking about dating ask her about Elijah. He seems to have had an impact on her." Maeve flushed at Klaus's comment. She averted her eyes pursuing her lips to hide the smile.
"Oh God she's got a blush. You really do like him." Maeve stood up and turned away trying to get away from the conversation, "drop it."
"She's not denying it, Nik! Oh how lovely." Rebekah chimed making her way to Maeve. She interlocked her hand with Maeve's beaming a wide grin,
"I think we're going to be great friends."
Gloria's bar was empty that morning. She had prepped for the spell. Candles lit around a salt circle. She turned around at the sound of the door open. Her mood changed when she saw Maeve stroll inside in tow with the originals.
"You again." whined Gloria crossing her arms.
"Hello. Didn't want to see you again either but what can be done?"
Gloria turned to Klaus with a incredulous look, "why ask me? I told you I don't want her here. Let her do the spell if you're so interested in keeping her as company."
"Yes! Let me do that spell. I'm sure I can do it far better than she can."
Gloria took a step closer to Maeve as if she wanted the hybrid to feel threatened. If anything, Maeve challenged her, "you think you are so strong and powerful. All you are, is a curse."
"Carefully Gloria, it might affect you too." Maeve turned to Klaus again, "is this really what you trust? All talk and no show? I can do that spell in matter of minutes. All I need is Rebekah and I'll be done."
"Not as skillfully as me." Gloria quickly defended herself. "come Rebekah." she instructed.
"Then please. Demonstrate how skillful you are." Maeve gesticulated towards the table laid out on which were the equipments for performing the spell.
Gloria sat down at the table with Rebekah taking a seat in front of her. Klaus leaned closer to Maeve who has situated herself on the bar table. "You are incredible." he complimented her.
"Whatever do you mean?" she acted nonchalantly but with a prideful grin. Maeve reached over the counter and got for herself a bottle of bourbon.
The door chimed again, this time Stefan entered inside maintaining a calm posture.
"You left us." said Rebekah.
"Yeah, Retail therapy was making my head explode." Stefan said looking at Gloria who was busy doing her spell.
"Tell me about it." Klaus added.
"What's she doing?" Stefan asked.
"She's failing." Klaus said a little loudly.
"She's looking for the necklace, huh?" Stefan asked nervously. Maeve watched him closely. She knew whatever he was hiding had something to do with the necklace.
"I can sense something." Gloria announced.
She looked at Stefan and then Klaus, "I found it."
"So, where is it?" Rebekah asked.
"It doesn't work like that, doll. I get images. There's a girl with her friends."
"Yes, a dead girl with dead friends. If I don't get my necklace back." Rebekah warned.
"Well, I'll have to dive back in to get more details."
"So dive." Klaus replied making his way to the table where Gloria sat.
"I need more time." Gloria said looking up at Klaus, "and space. You're hashing my juju."
Maeve rolled her eyes at the excuse. She didn't know much about spells but she was sure of something being wrong.
"We can wait." Klaus denoted from his place by the table. Stefan made his way to the original Hybrid and leaned closer to whisper in his ear,
"Hey, why don't we just come back later? I'm hungry anyway. I'll let you pick who we eat."
Maeve noticed the change in Stefan. She wanted to talk but after what happened last night she decided against it. She had enough of the mistreatment to get her to know she was no longer welcome. Not like she was with the originals.
The party shifted back inside the warehouse. Every vampire held a compelled girl draining them of blood. Stefan, Klaus and Rebekah enjoying their kills. Maeve devoured the cheeseburger she bought from the local diner.
"My girl's dead and I am bored." Rebekah said resting his hands on her knees.
"You weren't kidding about being hungry." Klaus said looking at Stefan.
"It's been a long day." He replied with a grin. His vampire eyes still wide as were his fangs coaxed in blood.
"Try being related to her." Klaus said pointing at Rebekah. Stefan smiled at Klaus's comment making Rebekah scowl angrily.
"You're being mean. Why are you being mean? You used to love me." Rebekah complained.
"It's been ninety years Rebekah. Give him a minute." Klaus defended the Salvatore.
"Why are you taking his side?"
"Because my dear sister. I feel pity for any man who doesn't give you what you want." Klaus said.
"Would you stop making me out to be a brat? I am not a brat."
"Thousand years of life experience says otherwise." He smiled.
"You're not a picnic either. I mean, I have only spent a summer with you and I feel like I wanna blow my head off." Stefan replied making everyone laugh.
"Fantastic." Rebekah commented.
"Seriously, Klaus I hardly think you should say anything about her." Maeve defended Rebekah.
"Thank you."
Stefan carelessly dropped his kill on the floor and stood up, "I need to go." Stefan walked away wiping his mouth.
"Where's he going?" Rebekah asked
"To write a name on the wall." Klaus told her. "It's a long story."
Maeve pushed herself off the table and dusted her hands. She went across the two behind a row of storage space and leaned to check on the entry door. As soon as she could confirm Stefan was gone, Maeve turned around and walked back to the two siblings.
"I think Gloria is absolutely bullshitting you." she bluntly told them.
"Maeve just because she isn't a big fan of you, doesn't mean you should insult her." said Klaus.
Maeve rolled her eyes, "that is not why I am saying this. Listen to me, locator spells are training wheels. Not hard to do it. Gloria saying that all she sees is a girl is lies."
"Can you do it?"
"Of course!" bragged Maeve. Her features hardened when her words resonated again inside her head.
"What if..." she trailed off. Klaus sat up hearing her. He watched her wring her hands together thinking.
"What is it?" she looked at Klaus remaining silent.
"It has to be a possibility, right? I mean, it could be an explanation." she mumbled confusing Klaus and Rebekah.
"What is a possibility?"
"It's Stefan we are talking about. And Damon, two lovesick fools. Who's to say what they can accomplish?" she rambled on more. "I──I'll be right back." Maeve told them. She didn't wait for their response and dashed out immediately.
Rebekah looked at Klaus, "what was that?"
"I don't know." replied Klaus.
Maeve ran inside her hotel room and brought out the grimoires she carried with her. Hastily she kept flipping the pages searching for something in particular. "I know you are here somewhere. I remember seeing you once. Come on." she mumbled incoherently, "you are here somewhere. Show yourself."
Half an hour went by as she exhausted through the five grimoires she had. She plopped on the bed with a tired sigh. Maeve knew she had seen what she searched for somewhere. Minutes passed before she sat up again and an angered look.
"How could they!" she cursed profusely. Without another thought she ran out again but this time to Gloria's bar.
Maeve stopped outside the bar seeing two unlikely people conversing among themselves. Maeve looked from him to her as a number of thoughts ran around inside her head.
"I fucking knew it!" she said. "Katherine Pierce the bitch and Stefan Salvatore the lovesick puppy."
"Hello Maeve." Katherine smiled.
"Shove it bitch-woo. You──" she pointed at Stefan, "you lied to me. You have been using me."
"You don't understand it wasn't..." Stefan began but Maeve cut him off,
"I understand plenty. I noticed something off about a stack of grimoires way back when but I didn't think much of it. But now I know it." Maeve prowled over to him and met his eyes with an angered look, "tell me the truth. You saved her didn't you?"
"I..."
"The truth Stefan."
"Yes."
Maeve scoffed shaking her head, "you used me. You used me and didn't even bother seeing if I was okay or something. You just wanted things done. Didn't bother checking up on me during this trip. Didn't bother telling me she's alive. Just let me be?" She laughed deliriously, "I am a fucking idiot to think you thought we were friends. I am the fucking idiot who cared."
"Really? Because it looks like you had the answer all along but you didn't give it."
"The spell has repercussions you wouldn't have wanted to pay." Maeve shouted before a look of betrayal washed over her face. "How did you even know about the spell?"
"Damon found it." Stefan saw no reason to hide anything anymore. "Bonnie saw a spell when they went to Dr Martin's place she vaguely remembered. Damon went to your apartment to look for it."
"When I was trapped by Klaus. He didn't look at me twice but took time to search around my apartment for a spell. So it didn't matter that you had to take a life to save Elena but when I did the same thing to save you──I was suddenly a monster." a single tear rolled down her cheek, "what did I do to you? After all of this...and Damon came to the funeral...wanting to be a friend..." Maeve began to hyperventilate.
"You know what? Drop dead Stefan." Maeve turned to walk away when she felt an arm grab her from behind. Maeve lifted up her hand to cast a spell but a syringe stabbed in her neck that immobilised her. Maeve felt a burning sensation run through her veins making her scream out loud.
"What did you do?" asked Stefan running over to them.
"Silver. Bad for lycanthropes." she heard Katherine inform Stefan.
Maeve struggled to keep herself awake but used whatever strength she had to attack Katherine. She grunted in pain before she was thrown back through the glass of the door. She stumbled on her two feet blinking her eyes to equal her vision.
"You can't tell him, Maeve." Stefan pleaded with her.
"I will. I'm done helping you." determinedly Maeve said still disoriented.
"I can't let you do that." Stefan slammed her head on the doorframe and let her fall down on the ground unconscious.
"I am sorry Maeve but you are not the same person anymore." Stefan mourned before he turned back to Katherine.
Klaus looked between Rebekah and Stefan. He noticed tension in them, "what's going on?" asked Klaus.
"Something is wrong." Rebekah said, "he was asking about Mikael. He's not with us, Nik. I can sense it."
"She's lying. Klaus..." Stefan trailed off.
"She's not but you are." came a tired voice from behind them. All heads turned to see Maeve putting her weight on the steel stand carrying storage boxes.
"Maeve...where were you?" asked Klaus turning to face her completely.
"Ask him." asked Maeve limping as she walked. "Tell him Stefan or I will." she warned him. "I am still being civil, Stefan even though you don't deserve it. At least for the sake of that friendship Klaus values do it yourself." Klaus watched as regret and guilt washed over Stefan hearing Maeve. Maeve leaned on a side struggling to breathe.
"Maeve are you okay?" asked Rebekah
"Yeah I'll be." said Maeve unconvincingly. She kept her eyes on Stefan.
"Tell him or I will." she said it again. Stefan remained silent and she took her sign. Maeve lifted up her head to look at Klaus.
"Elena's alive." she revealed. Klaus gaped at the information, "Damon stole one of my grimoires and helped Bonnie save Elena. There was a spell, he helped her." She sucked in a harsh breath to continue, "He's been working with Katherine. I don't know how long but that's the truth."
"Maeve, you were our friend." Stefan said again foolishly.
"I NEVER WAS!" she bawled out. A small trickle of blood flowed down the side of her head. Maeve pressed a hand to her head where she sustained an injury yet she didn't stop talking. "I was always a means to an end. A means of saving your whiny bitch! Nothing more. I deluded myself into thinking the situation was to be blamed. You really cared about me. News Flash you fucking prick! He's a better friend than any of you! He may be the killer in your story but he and his siblings are a thousand times better than any of you."
Maeve turned to Klaus again, this time her eyes softened, "I would have told you sooner if I knew." Klaus didn't respond instead he speeded and snapped Stefan's neck.
"What did he do to you?" asked Rebekah. Klaus went to examine Maeve. He looked into her bloodshot eyes. He placed a hand on her arm growing worried and curious.
"Why are you so cold?"
"Katherine stabbed me with silver. Stefan slammed my head on the door frame of the door to the bar." Maeve revealed. She blinked her eyes trying to keep her vision straight. If only she could. White spots covered her vision as she felt exhaustion take over,
"I'm sorry Klaus. Please I didn't know. You won't kill me, right?" were the words Maeve mumbled before she fell unconscious. Klaus supported her holding her by her shoulders. He lifted her up and carried her to a table nearby. He set her down and bit into his wrist. He pressed the wrist to her mouth forcing the blood in. Klaus watched carefully as he noticed the wound heal on her head.
"You're not going to kill her, are you?" asked Rebekah. "I won't let you."
"I am not going to kill her, Rebekah. Look at her!" said Klaus loudly, "she's been through enough because of Elena and her boyfriends."
"Elena the doppelganger? When has that species never caused anyone hurt?" Rebekah rolled her eyes.
