1. Rose
Bright light made her squint her eyes shut again. She pressed her hand to her head moaning at the pain that shot through her body. She stirred in a feeling like someone was hammering her head.
"Mae?" she heard a voice faintly call her. She moaned in response still trying to open her eyes.
"Mae? Wake up, please. Wake up." the voice called her again. Her hand went up shielding her eyes from the light that blinded her. Turning away, her eyes settled on the dusty moist ridden ceiling. They then roved to the walls which were surpringly intact before they wandered to the girl next to her.
"Maeve?" She blinked her eyes a few times before everything came into focus?
Maeve checked herself first. She noticed the crack in her ring, the dust covering her wine red dress. "Great." she lightly cursed before turning to the girl. "Elena? Where the fuck are we?"
Elena breathed a sigh seeing her awake, "I don't know. But I think they are vampires." she slumped on the couch across Maeve. Maeve rolled her eyes slapping her forehead.
"I just had to be there with you!" Maeve blatantly stated making Elena's jaw drop. "The one time I give in to this ridiculous social obligation of checking up on each other I end up here──in this ditch, next to you for God knows what reason." Maeve stood up smoothening her dress before taking off her heels. She walked to the tainted windows trying to find an escape.
"There's nothing here." A female voice affirmed making both of them turn their heads to the staircase in the room. A pixie haired woman stood ahead of them, glaring at Elena. She turned to Maeve studying the odd stranger they had to bring along, "there's nothing for miles. Your efforts would be to waste." she said confidently.
Maeve rolled her eyes walking over to the couch in the room. "And what makes you think I am scared of you."
"I am a vampire sweetheart. Five hundred years old at that. I wouldn't test if I were you." Maeve raised her hands in surrender.
"What do you want from me?" Elena questioned the pixie haired woman. A daring facade took over her scared features. Maeve crossed her arms holding back a mischievous sly grin wanting to see how daring could Elena get.
"My god, you look just like her." The girl replied befuddled.
Hearing her words, Maeve rolled her eyes scoffing,"Of course, it's because of that bitchy-woo." Maeve murmured under her breath.
"But, I am not. Whatever you think―" Elena was rudely interrupted by the woman exclaiming, "Quiet!"
"I am not Katherine. My name is Elena Gilbert. You don't have to do this." Elena tried pleading again.
Maeve stomped closer to Elena ignoring the cold floor beneath her bare feet, "Uh, hey doppelganger." She caught Elena's attention. "In case...I mean, just in case, her words didn't register, she said "you look just like her" which is a common man understanding that she knows you are not Katherine." Elena scowled at Maeve who stared back unaffected. "Besides, Katherine is too much of a tough cookie then you to get kidnapped."
"Maeve, not now." Elena strictly told her. Maeve flashed a tight smile turning to the only vampire in the room. "May I know your name or is that also on the list of no-no?"
"It's Rose." She introduced herself with a smile.
"Maeve, but you already caught onto that because of this one here."
"What do you want?" Elena asked again. Rose rolled her lips into a tight straight line. She raised her arm and slapped Elena causing her to fall back on the couch. Maeve craned her neck to check on Elena who was unconscious now.
"I don't know who you are but how strong exactly are you? One slap and she's comatose." Maeve raised an eyebrow at Rose.
"Don't or I'll do the same to you." Rose warned. Maeve smiled at her before she stepped closer to her, reaching at an eye level. "I'd like for you to try. I am not an easy prey like this one." Maeve challenged her.
Rose narrowed her eyes on Maeve staring in scrutiny before she walked away. Maeve let out a soft sigh making her way to the couch. She sat next to Elena thinking over the last thing she remembered.
Maeve combed her fingers through her curled lick of auburn hair with red highlights. She took out the pins she tucked in the folds to keep her hair in place and threw them carelessly on the floor. "Not like I'll use them again anyway." Maeve waited, having nothing else to do, for Elena to wake up.
Another hour passed before Elena started stirring. She woke up with a moan. "About time you got up." Maeve commented incredulously.
Elena sat up rubbing a hand over her cheek. "How long was I out?" she asked Maeve. Maeve looked at her left wrist tapping on it as if she was checking her watch.
"Sometime." Maeve responded giving the doppelganger a side glare. Elena scowled standing up. "Come on, we should ask them what they want with us?"
"Them?" Maeve repeated in surprise.
"Rose and there's another one, Trevor." Elena informed. "Come on."
"Fine." Maeve reluctantly stood up. The two slowly walked up the stairs. With each step the murmurs of them conversing became clear.
"Did you contact him?" They heard the voice of Trevor question his companion.
"I contacted one of his contact. You know how this works Trevor. Whether or not the message gets to Elijah we just have to wait and see." explained Rose.
"Then it's not too late. We still have time. We don't have to do this." Trevor said with fear evident in his voice. Surprise glassed her eyes before she returned to a neutral stance. Maeve knew of Elijah. In an attempt to understand the world, she came across the name once. If whatever she heard so far was true, even she feared coming face to face with the originals.
"I am tired of running." Rose exasperated.
"Running keeps us from dying." Trevor argued.
"Elijah's old school. If he accepts the deal then we are free."
Elena took another step causing one of the lose floorboards to creek. The two vampires snapped their heads to look at the eavesdroppers.
"You two! If I was not clear before, there's nothing here for you two. If you're thinking of getting out of this house then you're tragically wrong." She warned the two girls.
"Who's Elijah?" Elena asked ignoring the threat she threw her way.
"He's your worst nightmare"
"Why am I here?" Elena asked again. Maeve understood, there was no way she or Elena could get any fruitful answers from the duo. She stood silently on a side watching the three.
"You keep asking questions as if I'll answer them." Rose snapped.
"Why won't you?"
"There's another one."
Elena didn't want to give up. She resiliently tried to push again, "Look you got me, it's not like I can go anywhere the least you could do is tell me why I am here."
"I personally don't want anything. I'm just the delivery service." He replied.
"For Elijah, the original." Maeve snarkily added in.
"Two points to the eavesdroppers" Rose sarcastically commented.
"Who is he? A vampire?" Elena asked again.
"He is one of the Vampires. An original." Rose explained before turning to look at Maeve with confusion, "didn't you just say he's an original?" Maeve nodded pursuing her lips.
"What do you mean the originals?" asked Elena prying for more answers.
"There you go asking questions. Haven't the Salvatore's being teaching you vampire history?" Maeve saw Rose's features harden with each new question of Elena.
"You know Stefan and Damon?" Elena stared at Rose with a shocked look. Maeve noticed Trevor's wavering eyes set on her. She noticed the curiosity in them. Maeve grew slightly nervous but gave a blank look. She shook her head sideways and walked away not wanting to be a part of the conversation.
Maeve plopped back on the couch in the room. Maeve stretched her limbs feeling the fabric of her dress strain by her shoulder. She glanced down at her ring. The glass on top of it had a crack in it. Maeve threw her head back with a harsh groan.
"its okay. You have to careful. You cannot afford to be found. Not when no one knows who you are. Keep calm or you might give it away."
Maeve sat silently affirming to herself that it was going to be okay. Minutes passed before Elena stomped back into the room. "Didn't get the answers you desired, Jafar?" chastised Maeve earning another scowl from Elena. She opened her mouth to respond to Maeve but scrunched her nose. Elena reached in to her pocket and pulled out a piece of paper.

Both looked at each other reading the note. Taking each side of the dirty couch, both waited until the time Rose or Trevor walked back into the room.
Rose walked back inside the room first, "you here to check if we still here or alive?" Maeve turned to Rose, challenging her.
"You have got a loud mouth on you. I'd shut it if I were you when Elijah gets here. He isn't fond of big mouths."
"Don't you worry about me sweetheart." Maeve assured her, "I've protected myself for a time now, I'll do that even now."
"He's here." Trevor said hurrying in the room.
"No, I told I will get us out of this." Rose assured him. "Just trust me."
"He wants me dead, Rose" Trevor said still panicking heavily.
"He wants her more." Rose shouted harshly.
"I can't do this. You give her to him. He'll have mercy on you. I'll leave." Trevor suggested with a wavering tone.
"Hey, what are we?" Rose asked placing her hands on Trevor's shoulder.
"Family forever." He whispered back closing his eyes with a deep sigh.
"Stay here with them, I'll go talk." saying so Rose stepped out of the room.
Maeve leaned closer to Elena, "it will be okay, Elena." she assured the doppelganger.
A few minutes passed when Maeve suddenly jumped to her feet hearing the faint creeking sound of the floorboards. Elena stood up next to Maeve. A man wearing a suit walked to the railing on the floor up. He speeded closer and in front of Elena leaving hardly any space in between them. Instinctively, Elena gasped and jumped a step back. He leaned closer to Elena smelling her blood.
"Human." He declared, "it's impossible."
"Excuse me, Mister." Maeve took another step closer to Elena and linked her arm with Elena. "Are you unaware about a basic human curtsy of personal space?"
Elijah stared at Maeve meeting her challenging eyes, "and who might you be?"
"She was with the doppelganger. We didn't have a choice." Rose explained.
"I see. What is your name?"
"The name is Maeve Williams, Elijah." she introduced herself. Elijah curious eyes took in Maeve's form. Something about her sparked questions inside his head. It created more curiosity when he caught onto her racing heartbeat.
Maeve's eyes were widened in anticipation. Nervously she reached out her right arm to rest on her left, playing with the small signet ring on her finger.
Elijah stepped to his right, in front of Maeve, "what are you?" he asked her.
"Human." she responded daringly. "None of your concern at that."
Elijah smiled with a soft scoff and diverted his attention to Elena once again. "Come. We have a long journey ahead of us."
Elena looked over Elijah's shoulder at Rose, "please don't let him take us."
"One last piece of business and we're done." Elijah went over to Trevor who cowered, bowing his head low.
"I've waited so long for this day, Elijah. I'm truly, very sorry." Trevor apologised.
"Oh no, your apology's not necessary."
"Yes, yes it is. You trusted me with Katerina and I failed you."
Elijah gave a blank stare, "oh yes, you are the guilty one." He turned to look at Rose who stood on the stairs, "and Rose aided you because she was loyal to you and that now I honor." He turned back to Trevor. "Where was your loyalty?"
Trevor looked at his feet refusing to meet Elijah's eyes. "I beg your forgiveness."
"So granted." Trevor smiled hearing Elijah's words. Elijah turned around and smacked him hard enough to cleanly rip his head off of his body. Rose let out a shrill scream at the sight of Trevor's body falling at Elijah's feet while his head rolled away.
"Woah, dude!" exclaimed Maeve shocking everyone. "You have got to teach me how to do that." Elijah smiled involuntarily amused with her reaction.
"You..." Rose began with a angered gaze.
Elijah raised his hand turning to her, "Don't Rose, now that you are free." he warned before making his way to Elena again. "
"Come." He instructed Elena.
Elena shook her head terrified of the man, "No, what about the moonstone?" she blurted out. Maeve slapped her forehead, closing her eyes.
Elijah noticed this action and moved to stand before Elena, once again. "What do you know about the moonstone?"
"I know that you need it and I know where it is." Elena gulped unnerved with Elijah's gaze set deadly on her.
Elijah shifted his stand growing impatient with the doppelganger, "Yes?"
"I can help you get it."
"Tell me where it is."
"It doesn't work that way."
"Are you negotiating with me?" He confirmed before turning to look at Rose.
"It's the first I've heard of it." Rose told him trying to not look at her best friend's body.
Elijah turned to Elena once again. Maeve noticed him trying to compel her, "don't." she warned him. "I know you want to moonstone and we know where it is. Now either you make a deal and get it along with bitchy-woo or I am sure, we can find some way to get rid of both."
Elijah was amused and impressed with Maeve. He tilted his head toward her, "you are quite brave for a human." he commented starkly.
"I have been told so." Maeve replied. She was sure she would have to act on her feet if needed. She knew she had no choice. Then again, never did she truly have choice.
Elijah was charmed with the strength Maeve possessed that she dared to challenge him. Instead of carrying a conversation with her, he pulled off the necklace from around Elena's neck and threw it in the room. He gripped the back of Elena's neck and held her in place.
"Tell me where the moonstone is."
"In the tomb, underneath the church ruins."
"What is it doing there?"
"It's with Katherine."
"Interesting." The sound of something breaking caught their attention.
"What is that?"
"I don't know." Rose replied looking scared.
"Who else is in this house?"
"I don't know." shouted Rose. Elijah grabbed Elena. He held out a hand for Maeve which she reluctantly took. He forced the two up the stairs with him. Elijah stood in the middle of the foyer area of the abandoned house looking around the empty place cautiously.
He threw Elena onto Rose for her to keep a hold on. He turned back around looking at the back. "Rose?" He asked again.
"I don't know who it is."
"Up here." they heard a male voice echo from the top of the stairs. Maeve breathed a willful sigh at the sound.
Yay! You got saved! the tiny voice inside her head faux cheered.
Elijah speeded on the top of the stairs looking around to find the source of the voice. Maeve gasped sharply when a hand pulled her away. She opened her eyes to find a pair of familiar blue eyes looking straight at her. He pressed a finger to his lips telling her to be quiet.
Maeve nodded frantically turning her head to the door and back at him. He nodded leaving her alone against the wall of the room.
"Excuse me." Elijah voice echoed throughout the house. "To whom it may concern, you're making a great mistake if you think that you can beat me. You can't. Do you hear that?" Maeve flinched at the sound of wood breaking. Her eyes kept blinking staring at the empty space from the door. She kept wishing for the day to be over.
"I repeat, you cannot beat me. So I want the girl, I'm gonna count to three or heads will roll. Do we understand each other?" Maeve drowned out the rest of the voices.
She stepped outside the room carefully. She reached out just in time to see Elijah grunt in pain at the stake being embedded into his chest and being pinned to the wall. Damon Salvatore stood in front of him with a determined angry look. He turned around again to see Elena standing at the top of the stairs with a relived expression. She dashed down the stairs into Stefan's arms. She glanced at Damon and muttered a thank-you.
Damon nodded pressing his lips together before he turned to Maeve who stared at a dead Elijah. "Mae? Are you okay?" He asked her placing both his hands on his shoulders. "Are you hurt? Did he hurt you? Did she?"
"I──I'm okay, Demon. I'm fine. Just so glad to see you!" Maeve hugged the older Salvatore. Damon wrapped his arms around her tightly. "Of course." He pulled back smiling at her tired smile. "Come on, let's get you home. I bought two cheeseburgers for you." he announced.
"That is why I love you!" Maeve cheered before she turned to look at the couple, "Why don't you guys go ahead. I should probably take out the coat rack and put him on the floor. Hanging him like this might cause a serial killer case around the police departments."
"It's not our concern." Stefan told her.
"It would be if it comes to Mystic Falls. I am just going to take him off the wall and throw him down those stairs. Then it would not be our responsibility." Maeve explained. "Clean up the crime scene."
"Fine. But I'm counting. Five minutes and I come and throw you into the car." Damon threatened her with a sharp narrowed glare. Maeve pressed two fingers to his chin shaking his head sideways. "Adorable little baby, aren't you threatening someone who took you down in one go."
"I hate you!" exasperated Damon slapping her hand. He exited the house with Stefan and Elena in tow. Maeve gripped the coat rack embedded into Elijah's chest. With a strong inhale of breath she successfully pulled out the stake. Elijah fell on the floor with a loud thud. Maeve walked around the house, into the room where she spoke with Rose and Trevor in search of a paper and pen.
She took the chair in the room and sat on it, the paper on top of one of the many books.
Mr Elijah,
I know that you will wake up again from this temporary death. I know you sensed something that confused you. I also know better than to make an enemy out of you. I suppose if you are the noble one, I could take a leap of faith and tell you everything the next time we meet. Hopefully you'll teach me how to do that bitch slap.
The brave one,
Maeve.
Maeve set the pen on the table and folded the paper. She walked back inside the room they were kept trapped in. She picked up the necklace and walked back outside. Maeve tucked the paper inside Elijah's suit breast pocket and stepped outside. She waved her hand as a signal for Damon and sprinted ahead to not raise any more suspicion.
