This is Love

"When is this even going to end?" Kai mumbled to himself, letting out a tired sigh, as he watched the last person present their presentation in the class.

Kai had extra classes in University, as he had to submit his Media and communication report today.

He wanted the class to end fast now, because Taehyun was waiting for Kai outside.

Taehyun and Kai, were best friends since as long as they could remember. If Kai's asked to rummage into his oldest childhood memories, Taehyun would be present in every single one of them.

Kai first met Taehyun when he was seven, in a playground near his house. Kai had moved to Korea from China because of his parents, and he still wasn't fluent in Korean, so he was sitting alone, until a kid with uniquely big eyes, bouncy bowl-cut hair and a toothy smile approached him.

Kai remembers Taehyun extending his hand for Kai to hold, and inviting him to play with his friends, and since that day, Kai never left Taehyun's hands, neither did Taehyun.

Since then, their friendship went through several friend groups, big and small fights, separations and what not, but they stuck together like glue. And that's how they're now here, at 21; pursuing their own University degrees.

It was 6pm now, and Kai finally was done with his class.

"Finally! Freedom!"
Kai groaned, walking outside the class, with his bag slinging from his shoulders, as his eyes fell on his best friend waiting for him at the entrance.

"Taehyun-ah! Hey!" Kai waved, an instant smile blooming on his face as he caught the sight of the shorter brunette.

Taehyun waved back, noticing Kai walking towards him.

"About time you're here." Taehyun spoke in his usual dull tone. But his gaze was soft, only for Kai.

"Come on, let's go." Taehyun added, signalling Kai to walk along.

"Mhm." Kai smiled, walking along with Taehyun. The campus was slowly emptying, as numerous students in groups or singles were walking out. The weather was warm and humid, but black clouds were covering the usually blue sky, indicating a rain shower soon.

"Did you wait too long?" Kai asked, as he walked along his best friend.

Taehyun glanced up at the sky, and shrugged.

"I'm used to waiting for you, so I'm fine." He answered, his tone not carrying any emotion as if he was used to not showing any emotion, but now that Kai was with him, Taehyun's demeanour had softened, and he glanced over at him, taking note of every detail on his face.

"True that." Kai hummed.
"Looks like it's about to Rain.." Kai said, looking up at the sky.

Taehyun's eyes met Kai's, and he nodded slowly in agreement. The clouds seemed to be slowly gathering in one corner of the sky and a few distant thunderclaps could be heard.

"Should we hurry back home instead of taking the long route? The weather isn't looking so good." Taehyun suggested.

"Yeah, let's do that." Kai nodded in agreement.
"Been a while we walked through that grassy path." He added with a grin.

Taehyun nodded back, and he stepped closer to Kai, his arms curling around his friend's arm in a natural manner. He started to take the lead from that point on, taking the short-cut route which was a narrow pebble path in between a grassy garden-field. The weather was looking worse and worse by the minute.

"Oh no!"
Kai shrieked, as rain drops started hitting his head, slowly turning into a rain-shower from tiny droplets.

"It's raining already! Let's run!"
Kai grabbed Taehyun's hand in his, putting his bag over their heads and running with him on the grass, which was slowly getting wet with rain.

Taehyun got startled from the sudden pull, as they ran. The way Kai grabbed his hand, and pulled him along with him was enough to put a smile on his face.

The smell of the rain hitting the soil below them, the pitter patter of their footsteps, the light sounds of thunder in the distance, the whole atmosphere felt magical under the rain somehow.

"We're gonna get soaked!" Taehyun laughed, breaking the silence.

"We're already soaked! What do you mean!" Kai groaned, running along with Taehyun, almost falling into the grassy path. Kai's hair dripped with water, his vision blurring because of the rain.

But for Taehyun, there was something about running in the rain with Kai, with their hands in each other's and the rain falling around them, which made his heart feel warm and fuzzy.

It was true that they were soaked, but for some reason, it only made Taehyun's cheeks burn even more. It was as if the cold water was warming him up, and he had to stop himself from squeezing Kai's hand harder.

The way Kai was letting out small squeals or laughs, the sound of his voice, it was so beautiful to him.

"Look at you. You're all drippy." He said teasingly, laughing as they reached the pavement.

"You're all soaked yourself!"
Kai teased back, his eyes glimmering as he joked along with Taehyun.

"We're not even halfway to our apartment." Kai chuckled, standing under a tree with Taehyun, looking around.

"The rain is surely constant."
He commented, his fingers wrapped around Taehyun's hand, as they stood under the tree in the rain.

Taehyun was grateful for the shelter of the tree. The rain made it so that not many students walked on the grass anymore, which was perfect. No one to interrupt them, only for the two of them.

He looked down at Kai's hand intertwined with his, and for some reason it still made his heart skip a beat. Seeing such an adorable being, so close to him it felt surreal sometimes.

"Are you freezing?" He asked softly, taking note of how Kai's hands were cold.

"Not really."
Kai answered, looking at Taehyun, when an amazing idea popped into his head.

"I have an idea."
Kai grinned, throwing his bag on the ground in a dry corner, bowing in front of Taehyun with his hand extended.

"Would you like to have a... dance with me?"
Kai said, offering his hand asking him as if he was a Prince.

Taehyun's eyes widened when his best friend offered him a dance in the rain, under a tree, in the middle of the rain that only sounded like white noise. The rain felt... different.

It felt romantic.

Taehyun blinked, letting out a chuckle, and in one swift moment, he took Kai's hand and pulled him up.

"What are you, a Disney Prince now?" He said with a chuckle, but he didn't hesitate to pull his best friend, who was dripping wet, into his arms.

"Be my Princess then."
Kai teased back, pulling Taehyun with him out on the grassy ground, his laugh echoing around as he pulled Taehyun by his waist, twirling him around.

Taehyun smiled, as the boyish laugh he had kept hidden inside burst out. Kai was always making him giggle, or blush, or act like a complete fool. But he didn't mind. He was having fun, more than he expected, actually in such a situation.

"I'm not an expert at this, you know." Taehyun chuckled.

They danced in circles, their bodies fitting in each other's effortlessly, as if it had been fate, they were made for this.

"Neither am I."
Kai grinned, and decided they have fun now.
"Let's jump!" Kai said, taking both of Taehyun's hands in his, jumping with him, pushing and pulling him in a fun dance without any rules with their eyes on each other as they laughed together under the rain.

Taehyun was taken aback by how Kai simply grabbed his hand, and jumped, dragging him with him. The sensation of the rain hitting their bodies was almost exhilarating - a refreshing sensation as they jumped, spun, and danced together. Soon, they were just two weirdos enjoying a romantic rain storm.

"You're a crazy idiot." Taehyun grinned, pulling his best friend close and spinning him, as they laughed their hearts out. People around them might think they were just fooling around, but there was much more to this moment.

"You are too." Kai grinned, suddenly moving beside Taehyun with a mischievous smirk, placing his arms under his knees, picking him up bridal style in a swift motion without a notice.

Taehyun shrieked as Kai suddenly lifted him bridal style, spinning him around as the two burst into laughter and yells. Taehyun's face was bright red, and he was laughing so hard his stomach hurt.

"What're you doing! Put me down!" He yelled, his protest quickly stifled by laughing. He looked so adorable in Kai's arms, and the way he was trying to get down made him look even cuter.

"Not so easily."
Kai grinned, smiling down at him, as the rain poured at them, both of them wet and soaked, but Kai still spinned around with Taehyun in his arms, yelling and laughing.
"Wohoo!"

There was something about the way they were both soaked and wet, the rain hitting them and making the moment seem so much more surreal and beautiful. The way Kai's laugh rang around, the sound of Taehyun squealing and the rain falling - it was all beautiful. It was romantic.

Kai had completely made him forget about the fact that they were dripping wet in the middle of a rainy field, with even people around them.

"Put me down this instant, you idiot." Taehyun screamed, his voice ringing out with laughter.

"Okay Sir." Kai grinned mischievously, putting Taehyun down, running away from him in an instant.
"Don't kill me!" He yelled, knowing Taehyun would take revenge.

Taehyun laughed at Kai, as he got down from Kai's grasp. He stood there, his laugh filling the air, and ran after his best friend. This time, not stopping for anything else.

"Come here! I'll kill you!" He yelled jokingly, as he raced after Kai, their laughs echoing around them as they made their way through the rain.

"Catch me if you can!"
Kai provoked him, running around in circles, his feet landing on puddles of muddy water, splashing around as he laughed merrily being chased by his best friend.

Their chase was carefree, it was fun, it was childish but somehow still sweet and cute. Raindrops soaked their clothes, the occasional sound of thunder rumbled in the sky. They were so busy laughing and chasing each other around, that they barely paid attention to the rest of the world.

Kai's laughs rang out with him as he dodged, and Taehyun was determined to catch him, and soon he was successful as well.

"Ahhh I'm sorry!"
Kai screeched loudly, when Taehyun tackled him in a hug from behind.

"Sorry Sir! Forgive me!"
Kai yelled and howled with laughter as
Taehyun's arms snaked around his body, tackling him from behind, trapping him in a hug and tickling him mercilessly.

Kai was adorable when he was like this, and his little squeals of laughter were the icing on top. Just looking at his best friend now made Taehyun so warm inside.

"I'll forgive you only if you admit that I'm the better dancer." He teased, making sure to sound stern but the way his voice rang with laughter was so obvious. He wasn't mad at all, he just wanted to tease Kai.

"Never!"
Kai giggled, placing his own hands on top of Taehyun's which were on his stomach.
In that moment, it was just them, under the rain, sharing laughters and giggles, as if in their own bubble, their hearts racing together in a rhythmic song, with the sounds of their bated breaths making them sound breathless yet extremely cheerful.

Taehyun's heartbeat quickened, as he felt Kai's hands on top of his. For some reason the feeling of the other boy's fingers pressed against his sent shivers down his spine. His laugh was filled with adoration, and it was obvious his feelings had grown a lot deeper than the boyish crush he had for his best friend.

"You're such a goofball." Taehyun commented. The way Taehyun said it was like a sweet nothing, something you would say to someone you had a crush on.

"Your goofball."
Kai grinned, turning around to look at Taehyun, an unspoken amount of adoration shining in his eyes for the shorter.

"Let's go back now?"
Kai asked, looking at Taehyun, extending his hand to wipe the water away from Taehyun's face.

Taehyun smiled as they looked at each other, his expression filled with more than just admiration. It was as if he had developed an infatuation for the boy in front of him, and he felt so many feelings that he had long repressed and suddenly rushed to a boiling point.

"Yeah, let's go back now."
He took Kai's hand in his, his fingers wrapping around Kai's longer fingers. Taehyun was aware that he needed to suppress his emotions at this point, but he couldn't help but want more than just platonic connection from Kai.

"Mhm, let's run!"
Kai picked up his bag, and started running again.
"The one who reaches first gets to shower first!" He yelled, taking a head start, leaving Taehyun behind.

"Hey, that's unfair!" Taehyun called out, but his protest was quickly stifled by laughter as he took off after his best friend. The rain was pouring faster and faster now, as they dashed and scrambled through the rain, their playful laughs filling the air as they raced each other back home.

Taehyun knew it was futile to compete or even get close to Kai, but he didn't care. He just wanted more of this moment, it was too precious to let go.

"Everything is fair in love and war!"
Kai yelled, running fast, occasionally looking back at Taehyun, passing him smiles and taunts.

Taehyun was trying his best to keep up, but the truth was Kai was faster than him in every aspect. The shorter boy, who was still trying to catch his breath and keep up, could barely keep up with Kai's long stride. But he was enjoying this. He wasn't jealous of his speed, he just wanted to stay in his friend's presence.

"Love and war? What do you know about love?" Taehyun yelled back, his footsteps echoing in the rain as he tried to catch up with Kai.

"Hmm love?" Kai muttered, slowing down a little.
"Isn't this love?" He said, looking at Taehyun with the same smile filled with adoration for him.

The moment Kai looked back at him, Taehyun froze. He couldn't help but stare at his friend, how could someone be so...so...beautiful? Was he staring too much? He shook it off, his heart skipping a beat when he heard what Kai said.

Taehyun's eyes grew softer for a second as he grinned, stopping as well to look at his friend.

"Yeah...this is love."

The truth was, he couldn't imagine life without Kai. He would follow him to the ends of the world if needed.

"Yes, this is love."
Kai smiled, and began to fasten his pace again.

"Now don't be a loser! Love won't get you a win!"
Kai smiled, and at that moment... Taehyun realised something. This really was love. This feeling, the squeeze in his chest, this unwavering affection he had for Kai, was love.

The realisation hit him like a ton of bricks the moment that Kai started to make a run for it again. This wasn't just a best-friendship. There was something deeper, something that he never thought would have for anyone except Kai. This...this...was serious. Kai wasn't just an amazing best friend to him, he was hopelessly in love with his best-friend.

Taehyun ran as fast as he could, but he was already far behind Kai. He would never win the race. But he didn't care, because the only race he really wanted to win was to win Kai's heart. So, he kept running either way, knowing he'll catch up soon, both to Kai's steps and his heart.
