Allie shuffles along, not bothering to get out of people's way as she walks towards the training area of the base. She bangs shoulders with any soldier that she passes who don't move out of her way, and instead of offering them an apology, she just keeps on walking. Her gaze is firmly planted on her feet in an attempt to hide the despair that sits in her darkened brown eyes.
She has been cloaked in this depressed like state ever since she was told last week that she couldn't have children of her own.
She tried to avoid everyone like the plague. She didn't want people to see her like this, to see her as a shell of the person that she had been only just a couple of days before. She didn't want them to see that anything was wrong.
To see how utterly destroyed she was.
Being a mother had never crossed her mind before and she never thought that she could even have a family of her own. She never had the opportunity to be with someone and have a family. To be free and happy.
But now that she has, she finds out that her now attainable dream is actually unattainable.
And even though the sun streams down around her and there isn't a cloud in sight, she feels that her entire world has been turned from its usual brightness to a dull grey. Nothing seems appealing and there is little beauty around her to marvel at.
Her mood has ricocheted from low to lower as she stares at all the happy faces around her. She was even surprised at how she came up with the energy to get out of bed this morning and drag herself to work. And now that she is making her way there, she feels the slightest bit of motivation that she had managed to come up with, dissipate into thin air.
She quickly swipes under her eyes as she walks, making sure that there are no remnants of her tears left. She doesn't want anyone to see the pain that she is going through. This isn't like any other time that she has been upset because there is no way possible that they could help her through it.
They can't bring back her ability to have kids.
And as she nears the training area where she and Peggy are going to be training the recruits, Allie almost freezes midstep as she gazes at an all too familiar line of soldiers. Her sight is quickly replaced by a memory from her past that makes the entire world fade away for a few moments.
Her mind takes her back to when she was made to train with the men at HYDRA when she was in her later years of training. She would stare at the men all in a singular line dressed in the black HYDRA attire before she was made to take them all on by herself. And if she didn't defeat them, they would defeat her.
She remembers the hits, the punches, and the kicks. The pain and the torture.
But then the air from her lungs escapes past her lips as the memory fades away. She quickly blinks and realizes that she is standing out at the edge of the field where Peggy is instructing the soldiers from about 100 feet away. She shakes her head, trying to rid her brain of the memory before she continues walking towards the group.
First, they take her freedom, then they take sanity, and then they take away her one chance to have a family of her own.
What more can HYDRA take from her?
As Allie nears the group, Peggy turns around and gives her a warm smile while the troops look at her warily.
"Ah, Agent Williams." She winks. "You're just in the nick of time." She grins as she takes a step away from the awkward looking soldiers and towards Allie who gives her a half-hearted smile back.
"Carter, not all women delight in getting up this early." She jokes and then the two turn back around to the soldiers who stand rooted on the ground, clad in their olive-colored uniforms and helmets that fit very loosely on their small heads.
"Recruits, attention! I'm Agent Carter and this is Agent Williams. We are supervising all operations for this division, which includes turning you boys into soldiers." Peggy shouts, demanding absolute attention from the men. "Now I expect that we are both treated with the same respect that you would give to any other commander. If not, I will treat you similarly. But it would be beneficial to remember that we are the ones that dictate where you are sent off to and if you pass. So I would recommend that you keep that in mind. Do you understand?" She questions firmly as Allie stands by her side, eyeing the youthful faces of the boys whose demeanors change from one of shock, to one of seriousness in the flick of a switch.
"Yes, ma'am." They respond, almost in perfect unison.
"Good, now head over to that trail at the treeline over there. You will be completing a 10 mile run with a 4-mile hike back. Packs and food will be supplied at the end of the run." Peggy announces before she spins around to get into the navy army car that stands motionless behind her.
"Yes, ma'am." They answer and then they all turn and begin to make their way over to the beginning of the trail. As Allie turns to follow Peggy, she hears some whispers from a group of men that are hovering at the back.
"Didn't you hear? Rumor is that Agent Williams is a kraut spy." One of the men says with clear distaste in his voice.
"I doubt we will make it to the end of the track before she calls her Nazi friends on us and we become the new Nazi slaves." Another man whispers and Allie feels pure rage fester in her head at his comment in particular.
Normally when she is training soldiers, she can remain quite collected when they try to insult her based on her sex or any other defining characteristic. Because realistically, they never expected to be trained by a woman that's better at fighting than a man. So that usually results in a few snide comments or two that she typically ignores.
But today is definitely not the right day to piss her off. It doesn't take much for her to reach her breaking point and at this moment, she is almost blinded by a wave of bitter anger that felt surprisingly satisfying.
"Soldier!" She calls out, attempting to reign in her fury as looks dead straight into the man's green eyes. "What is your name?" She almost spits as she sees the smirk fall from his face.
"Charles Donaldson, ma'am." He replies, almost stuttering as he sees the anger that burns in her own brown eyes.
"Recruits, Halt!" She shouts, tensing her arms by her side in a desperate attempt to stop herself from punching him in the face.
"Now, Donaldson. Tell the rest of your squadron what you just told your comrades there." She seethes as Peggy walks back over to the group, wondering what the commotion is about.
"Ma'am?" He questions with a faint quiver of his upper lip.
"Do it." She growls and Peggy gives her a wary look.
"You are a Nazi spy." He gulps and Allie looks at him frustratedly.
"And?"
"And I doubt that we will make it to the end of the track before you call your Nazi friends on us." He continues and she turns her gaze from the stuttering soldier to the rest of the men who give her some curious and even resentful looks.
"Now listen here recruits. I am not a kraut." She starts, her tone almost frightening. "And you want to know something interesting? I have been fighting for your country in this war. I have been fighting to keep people like you alive and what have you been doing?" She questions as she turns back to the man who caused the release of her pent up anger.
"You were sitting at home, watching other people die for you. Letting others sacrifice their own lives, their families and children so that you can live." She spits and watches as the man turns his gaze from her to the ground. Pitiful, she thinks before she turns back to the rest of the men.
"And if any of you soldiers hear something similar come out of another soldier's mouth, you will send them my way and I'll show them what a real fight looks like." She finishes before she turns around and takes a seat in the car, slamming the door as she gets in. She ignores the look that the driver gives her while she waits for Peggy to get in the car.
"Start running, recruits!" She hears Peggy shout before she gracefully gets into the car and takes a seat next to Allie, giving her a wary look. But Allie avoids her gaze, and instead focuses her attention on the back of the driver's seat.
"Are you alright Allie?" Peggy questions softly, giving a quick nod to the driver who then starts up the car. He trails behind the soldiers who have just started running, their mumbled complaints barely audible over the loud rumble of the car's engine.
"Yeah, I didn't get much sleep last night that's all," Allie answers, taking a deep breath and then turning her head to Peggy and giving her a sad attempt of a smile.
"Well, we always have a few soldiers like that. I remember the one that was in Steve's unit. He was a right twat." Peggy comments with a shake of her head, remembering what that soldier Hodge had put Steve through during his training. But then Peggy's eyes light up as she remembers something else.
"Speaking about Steve, I heard from the Colonel that the boys are coming back today." She informs Allie who suddenly feels dread creep up her throat and it squeezes its claws around her neck. Her mouth falls open and she barely is able to put together her next few words.
"They are?" She nearly squeaks. She had been dreaming about Bucky coming back for the past few days but now she almost wants him to stay gone. She doesn't want to tell him how she can't give him any kids.
But the thing that really troubles her, is that he'll stay with her despite it. And by staying, she is cornering him into a future that they both know that he doesn't want. She knows Bucky well enough to know that he wants to have kids of his own and have a family. But even though she can't give him that, he'll stay with her anyway. And it's alright if he'll stay with her for a few weeks or maybe longer but what happens if in five or ten years time when he regrets not being with someone who can make his actual dream come true?
She can't be the reason that he wastes a large chunk of his life thinking he wants her when he really wants a family. A family that she can't give him.
"Yeah, apparently they finished wrapping up the propaganda shoot late last night," Peggy says and Allie quickly turns her attention back to the woman who sits next to her.
"Oh." Allie mumbles and Peggy lets out a sigh, knowing that she can't let Allie continue to hide the real reason for her newfound anger away from her.
"Allie, what's wrong?" She asks.
"It's nothing Peggy, really," Allie answers, giving her a somewhat sad smile that makes Peggy frown.
"Allie..." She trails off and Allie gulps nervously.
"I just don't get the point of the propaganda?" She lies, turning her gaze from Peggy's back to the soldiers. She hates lying to Peggy but she isn't comfortable telling her why she really is upset. "Why do they need to be out in a war zone to film something that is only going to make teenage girls fawn over Steve? It has no benefits and it isn't going to defeat Schmidt."
"It gives people hope. When they see someone that is doing good in the world, others want to join in. But even if they don't, it will make some people sleep easier at night. They won't have to fear what is actually happening over here." Peggy answers and Allie feels guilt cloud her thoughts. If there is anyone that she can trust, it's Peggy.
But she knows in her heart that Bucky deserves to know first. It concerns him first and foremost. But the real problem is that she doesn't know if she even has it in her to tell either one of them.
"So essentially you are getting more pigs to lead to the slaughter and you are lying to your people back home? Sounds very ethical." She comments cynically and Peggy lets out an almost defeated sigh.
"No, we are trying to win the war."

By that evening, somehow Allie's grumpy mood still hadn't improved.
She had little to no patience when commanding the soldiers. She got frustrated when they made the smallest of mistakes and when they kept making those mistakes, she punished them all harshly. She just managed to reign in the extreme outburst that she felt like letting out and tried to keep herself from being rude to Peggy, who had been trying to calm her down when she got extremely bad.
She just couldn't help it. She had this urge to punch everyone that she saw.
It was horrible.
She had never felt this kind of anger before. The kind where her eyes were completely aflame with the emotion and all she could think of were rageful and reckless thoughts that would truly unleash the monster underneath her usually pleasant facade.
And she almost feels like lashing out again when she is suddenly brought back to reality by a loud voice. "Allie!" She hears Peggy say, shaking her from the thoughts in her head.
"Sorry, what were you saying?" She replies as she raises her gaze up from the food that sits in front of her, to Peggy, who is eyeing her rather suspiciously. Their training hadn't finished until late today thanks to all of Allie's punishments, so they headed straight to the dining hall to have an early supper.
The dining hall is particularly crowded tonight with all sorts of soldiers who are vying to get some of tonight's special. Which must be a lot better than the food that they got out at the front considering all most all of them are drooling as they wait in line.
"Are you sure you're alright, Allie?" Peggy asks, glancing at the desolate in Allie's eyes and noting the defeated slump of her shoulders as she leans over her supper.
What she can't tell Peg is that she has been between three moods as of late; anger, guilt and utter despair. There is rarely a moment where she doesn't feel at least one of these emotions. She has been staying up every night repeating the same cycle of events. First, she would start throwing things at the walls and then cleaning them up later, letting her tears fall silently from her eyes. Then she would curl up into a ball on the floor and just sob like one of those characters out of a soppy love story.
But the part of her night that she hates the most is when the tears stop falling and the thoughts in her head scream at her. Uttering the most terrible of insults and scornful words at her already broken self.
But what will Peggy think of her if she told her what a mess she truly is?
"Yes, I'm just tired." Allie answers and Peggy gives her an unusual look, not for a second believing her.
"Alright. But you do know that that is an absolutely preposterous lie Allie, but if you don't want to tell me that's ok." Peggy starts and Allie can't help but turn her eyes down to her food guiltily. "I just want you to know that when you do feel ready to talk, I'm here for you." Peggy continues.
"Thank you, Peg," Allie says as she looks back up into Peggy's eyes and gives her a warm smile. Why can't there be more people like Peggy Carter in the world, she sighs internally.
But then, as if Peggy remembers something important, she bangs her hand lightly on the table and quickly gains Allie's attention. "Allie, I leave for a mission in a few days back in the U.S." She informs her, running a delicate hand through her thick chocolate hair. Allie gives Peggy an unimpressed look and shakes her head slightly at the news.
"Not you too!" She groans and a small smile pulls at Peggy's cherry red lips.
"I'm sorry Allie, but you said that you were cleared for duty again anyway? I very much doubt that you'll miss me when you are back running around with the boys again." Peggy responds before she takes a bite of her own food that is in front of her.
"I am, but I'll still miss having you around Peg." Allie sighs as a frown pulls at her own thin lips. Peggy grins at her comment and Allie almost can't help but smile back at her beaming friend.
"Well, if there is anybody that I'll miss from around here, it'll be you too." She replies in a chirpy voice as she daintily places her fork back onto her now clean plate and straightens out her plain white shirt. But just as Allie begins to respond, a soldier flings open the doors to the hall and comes sprinting in towards the center of the room.
"Everyone! They're back!" He screams in excitement."The Howling Commandos are back!"
And just like that, almost every single soldier in the dining hall flings themselves out of their seats and follows the overexcited soldier to the entrance of the camp, pushing each other as they want to be first in line to congratulate the boys on their mission.
Allie feels dread fill her stomach and she has to clench her hands together to stop Peggy from noticing the tremors that are making them shake. She begins to feel nauseous at the idea of telling Bucky because she knows that he doesn't deserve to find out months from now. He deserves to be told the truth.
But she doesn't know what the truth is going to cost her.
"Looks like it's your lucky day, Allie." Peggy grins as she gets out of her own seat and starts making her way towards the door too, following behind the stampede of soldiers.
"It sure is." She murmurs as she reluctantly gets up and begins to follow the group as well.
It isn't long before she hanging around the back of a crowd that is all cheering at the safe return of the boys from her own squadron. It didn't take much for her to get separated from Peggy as masses of people make their way to towards the boys, not caring if they have to throw some elbows to get to the front.
"Captain! Cap!" A nurse yells into Allie's ears and she screws up her face at the loud sound. She quickly turns her head in a vain attempt to stop the sheer loudness of the woman's voice from reaching her ears again. But instead, she narrowly misses getting hit in the face by a man's arm who is pushing his way through towards the front of the crowd like every other person is.
Allie almost growls in frustration and she turns back to the front and watches the boys make their way through the growing crowd. A faint smile pulls at her face as she sees the boys walk through the gates, swaggering as if they really are celebrities. And as she watches the boys, the entire world seems to become a bit calmer.
Steve walks at the front, clad in his still too big army helmet and leather jacket that covers his infamous Captain American uniform. She can just make out a slight blush across his cheeks as he walks through the crowd, full of nurses and soldiers alike. She has noticed that Steve is always awkward when being around a crowd, almost as if he thinks that he doesn't deserve the recognition.
Which he very much so deserve.
At his side is Bucky, who is enjoying the applause much more than his best friend. Bucky is wearing his usual military uniform, but somehow the dark ensemble makes him seem even more handsome than what he normally looks. And that's saying something since he is pretty handsome normally. A wide smile pulls at his pink lips and his cobalt eyes shine with happiness while he high fives soldiers as he follows Steve through the crowd.
Behind him is the rest of the crew who are all in high spirits and joking around as normal. Their bellowing laughs somehow can be heard over the thunderous applause of their arrival and Allie can just see Dum Dum and Morita pushing each other around over the shoulder of a fairly tall soldier that is standing in front of her.
She sighs when she realizes that there is no way that the boys will ever see her over the enormous crowd. So she decides to make her way over to the side of the medical bay that is a few feet away and lean against its wooden wall. She watches her friends from afar mingle with the crowd and she can't help but let a small grin pull at her lips when she sees Bucky scanning through the masses of people, hopefully looking for her.
It doesn't take long for the appeal of meeting the boys to fade and the reality of having jobs to do becomes the crowd's main focus again. The large congregation soon dies down to a little more than a couple of people and Allie quickly catches Bucky's eye. He gives her a quick wink and finishes up the conversation that he is having with someone before he jogs over to her with Steve hot on his heels.
"Welcome back boys." She smiles at the two as they near her. But before she has a chance to say another word, she is swept up into a tight hug by Bucky that almost makes her lose her breath because of the sheer ferocity of it.
Despite the dread that still hasn't made its way from her stomach, she feels herself calm down slightly at the feeling of her body pressed against his. She sinks into his embrace, relishing in the warmth from his simple touch.
"Hey, doll." He murmurs into her dark hair before he turns his head slightly and presses a loving kiss against her temple. A small sigh makes its way past her lips and she can't help but let her smile grow as he untangles himself from her.
But almost as if he doesn't want to let go of her, he keeps one arm wrapped around her waist and he pulls her into his side as Steve gives them a cheeky grin. Allie shakes her head at Steve before she looks up into Bucky's beautiful eyes.
"Did you miss me?" She teases and she feels her knees go weak when she hears his melodious laugh escape past his lips. His laugh is the one sound that she wishes that she could hear all night and all day. It's a sound that makes her feel pure happiness inside. A sound that reminds her of the good things in life.
"More than you could know." He answers, pressing another kiss against her temple.
Then Allie turns her gaze over to her blonde friend and gives him a joking salute. "Welcome back Steve," Allie grins, giving him a wink.
"Hey Allie, how was camp without us?" He replies, a smile pulling at his own thin lips as he takes the helmet off of his head and ruffles his dirty blonde hair.
"It wasn't too bad. Peggy and I were able to hold up the fort while you two were gone, but how was the trip?" She answers, looking back up to Bucky who tightens his grip on her waist in response to the question.
"It would've been a lot better if you were there that's for sure." He smiles and Allie can't help but mirror his smile on her own lips. But right as she opens her mouth to answer him, she is suddenly cut off by Peggy who approaches the group.
"Welcome back, Rogers," She says, giving Steve a nod before she turns to Bucky. "Barnes."
"Agent Carter," Steve replies with a nod and Allie can't help but notice the loving look in his eyes that goes seemingly unnoticed by Peggy.
"Hey Steve, there's something that I've got to show you." She tells him abruptly and Allie gives her a confused look.
"Peg?" She questions with furrowed eyebrows and Peggy just gives her a pointed look. Allie lets out a defeated sigh when she realizes what Peggy is doing. She is trying to get her to talk to Bucky about what's wrong.
Even without her knowing what really is the problem, Peggy is still helping her.
"Alright, I'll see you later guys," Steve says before he is dragged off by a determined looking Peggy.
That's when Allie starts to worry. Things that she should say and shouldn't say, coupled with potential outcomes of her upcoming conversation swirl through her mind. Her hands begin to sweat as a result of her newfound anxiety and she runs her hand through her hair, trying to stifle the shaking that it is doing.
Thanks Peggy, she groans as she looks down to her feet that are firmly rooted on the dirt floor.
Bucky quickly notices her change of demeanor and he looks down at her in confusion. "Are you alright doll?" He asks and Allie can feel her guilt render her mind into silence.
She isn't alright.
She is torn up inside and broken in a way that she has never been before. But she knows that if she wants any chance at healing, she needs to tell Bucky what is going on and potentially sever ties so that he doesn't become as broken as she is.
That's all she cares about. Not breaking Bucky like she has been broken.
"We need to talk." She says ominously and Bucky begins to feel nervous, not knowing which way this conversation is going to go.
"Allie?" He questions but she quickly shakes her head, trying to silence the screams in her head.
"Let's go home first." She mutters before she takes off, leaving Bucky to run after her in fear. He's never seen Allie this torn up before. Normally she is pretty good at masking her emotions, but Bucky still always seems to know what she is thinking anyway.
But now, anybody would be able to tell that there is something wrong. Her strong facade is slowly starting to collapse right before his eyes.
"Alright, Allie. You are starting to worry me." He says when he starts to catch up to Allie's trembling figure. There are just outside her apartment now and she isn't sure how much longer she can keep herself held together for. "Tell me what's wrong, doll." He begs, taking her clammy hand in his own. But she shakes her head again, trying to blink away the hot tears that threaten to spill from her eyes.
She pulls her hand out of his and hurriedly flings the door open to their apartment, barely able to see as her vision is blurred by tears. But then her legs start to feel as heavy as lead and she nearly would have collapsed onto the hard tiled floor if it wasn't for Bucky's strong arms wrapping around her mid-fall.
"I-uh, I..." She stutters as Bucky quickly carries her over to the bed and tries to calm her down by gently stroking the ends of her dark hair.
"Hey, it's alright love. There's no need to cry." He whispers as he softly lowers her distraught body onto the soft comforts of her bed. "Just tell me what's wrong doll, please." He begs, placing his large hand against the side of her head and forcing her to meet his reassuring eyes.
He has never seen her this frantic before. Her shoulders are slumped and she can't even bear to meet his eyes. Her body is trembling like a leaf and something is clearly bothering her. It makes his heart ache for her.
She looks to him sorrowfully, letting her tears flow freely now which unnerves him greatly. He doesn't want her to crawl back into her protective shell but it is like she can barely string a sentence together without another little part of her resolve crumbling away.
"But there is, Buck." She says finally. "I can't have kids."
And it was like a bomb had been dropped in the room. The silence was deafening and Bucky was frozen still. His hand dropped from the side of her face and into his lap without him even realizing because he was still reeling over her last words.
"W-what?" He stutters, looking at her in shock and confusion. Allie can start to feel her heart breaking as she can only imagine how disappointed he is in her. Who would want to be with someone who can't even give them a child?
That's supposed to be the one thing that women should be able to do and she can't even do it.
"I went to the doctors the other day to get my shoulder checked out. There was nothing wrong with my shoulder, but there was something wrong with me. Apparently, HYDRA operated on me as a kid so that I couldn't have any kids of my own." She croaks, trying to talk despite how constricted her throat feels. "I'm barren." She finishes and a tear begins to roll from her eyes at the words but she can't find it in herself to even stop it from falling.
But Bucky does.
He lifts up his hand again and gently wipes away the tears, kissing the spots when they are gone before he lifts his eyes back up towards hers. "Hey doll, this doesn't change my mind about us at all! Don't you dare think that I will give up on us you can't have kids." He tells her, meaning every single word.
"Bucky, I know that you want kids and I'm not going to corner you into a future that you don't want!" She argues, trying to pull his hand away from her face but he doesn't let her. Instead, he pulls her firmly into his arms and holds her against him as her body rocks with sobs.
"Doll, the only future I want is one with you in it." He whispers as he gently rubs her back, tracing circles with his long fingers as Allie cries into his shoulder.
Why would he stay with her? Why would he give up children for her? She doesn't think that he should but she knows that in the back of her head that he is glad that he did.
Because if she wants him to leave her as much as she thinks that she does, she should have said no and walked out on their relationship right there and then. But she doesn't. She is giving herself the opportunity to have a future with Bucky, whether she admits it or not.
But as much as she wants to, she won't believe it because she wants what is best for Bucky. And what she thinks is best for him, is for him to be with someone who can give him a family.
"Bucky -" She begins to disagree but he quickly shuts her up by pulling away and placing a chaste kiss against her lips. She can't help but kiss him back lightly because she wants him even though she thinks that he shouldn't want her. He deserves better.
And he wants her anyway.
But then he pulls away, all too soon in both of their opinions, and he tucks a finger under her chin and lifts her gaze up to his."And don't forget that even though you can't have a child, it doesn't mean that we can't have a child. We could always adopt when you're ready." He says softly."This doesn't mean that having a family is not an option doll."
And at his words, she can't help but let a silent tear fall. He's way too good for her.
He's too good for most of the people on this earth.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry Buck." She murmurs as she buries her head back into the crook of his neck, trying to stop the tears that fall from her eyes. He quickly places his hand on the back of her neck and gently rocks her back and forth.
"Shhhh, doll. There is no way in hell that you have anything to be sorry for. This isn't your fault." He murmurs, turning his head so that he can whisper directly into her ear so that she knows that he doesn't blame her for any of this.
"I love you, doll. Remember that." He tells her, placing a tender kiss against the side of her head.
Allie has no clue what she has done to deserve a man like Bucky.
Nothing probably, yet he is still here and he readily gave up his one dream so that he could have her. And it's at that moment when she realizes that she could do no better in her life. There is nobody she would rather have by her side than James Buchanan Barnes from the 107th battalion. She doesn't want any other man, other than the boy that she was thrown into a cell with back in HYDRA. She only wants her Bucky.
"I love you too." She answers, never meaning her words more than what she means them right now. Because HYDRA could take away her humanity, they could take away her friends and family. They could take away her ability to have her own family.
But the one thing that HYDRA could never take from her, is Bucky and her love for him.
"You will always be my forever."
And the two spend the rest of the night wrapped in each other's embrace. Blissfully ignoring the pain that the future might bring as they try to live in the moment together.
