HYDRA Base, Belgium
. ☾ .
At first, she is blind as she hurtles towards the ground. The entire world seems to be spinning in front of her eyes and time begins to feel almost nonexistent. Everything slows until there is nothing but her and the endless crevasse of the blue sky.
The cold air rushes past her as she descends further and faster to the ground below. She can see the dark green of the trees below her becoming larger and larger with each passing second. She turns her head and sees the rest of her team around her, also suspended in the air. She can't exactly point out who is who, but she knows that it is them.
But as she turns back to the world below, she can tell from the distance to the ground that it is time to stop free falling. So she pulls on the ripcord and is jerked suddenly by the action. Her parachute opens swiftly and she cranes her head to check that it opened as a full canopy. With a sigh of relief, she slows down to a more leisurely decline and enjoys the view from up above.
Not before long, her feet are firmly planted back on the ground along with the rest of the Howling Commandos. They have all split up into their groups and are quickly making their way around to their designated areas of the base.
Steve, Bucky, and Allie are stealthily moving their way around the east wing of the base, remaining hidden amongst the large trees and greenery. They can just make out the electric fence that lines the border of the base amognst the vast shrubbery. Allie has no clue where they are heading but according to Steve, they should reach the East entrance in a mile or two.
"We should nearly be there. Keep in close formation," Steve orders and Bucky and Allie give a quick nod in response. Allie has her grip tighten around the handle of her trusty throwing knife and she feels the comforting weight of her revolver strapped to the inside of her thigh as she moves. She is slightly nervous about her first mission back but she is determined to do as well as she has on every other mission.
Almost as if Bucky could sense her anxiousness, he turns to her and gives her a quick nudge."You know if you feel like you aren't up to it, you can still go back." He whispers and she shakes her head firmly.
"Bucky." She says with a heated look and he raises his hands up in defense. "I'm just looking out for you, doll." He replies and she sighs.
"Thanks for your concern, but I'm fine." She whispers back and before Bucky has a chance to respond, Steve suddenly halts ahead of them, holding a clenched fist up to tell them to stop.
The two of them sneak up to Steve's side and see the entrance gate that is being guarded by a single soldier. Allie taps Steve shoulder silently and gestures towards the guard. "I'll take him." She murmurs and Steve nods at her, noticing her tensed posture.
"Allie!" Bucky whispers angrily as she ducks away from them, trying to find a better vantage point to take down this guard. She shuffles amongst some bushes and trees until she is only a couple of feet away, and almost immediately she notices the small gap in his armor on his neck.
She is just about to reach down and pull the gun from her thigh but she halts halfway. She should shoot him but she hasn't got a silencer on her gun which would almost immediately alert any nearby guards that they are under attack. And since that is not a viable option, she swiftly pulls out her silver dagger and throws it.
True to its aim, it lands dead center in the man's neck and he quickly collapses on the ground, thick red liquid oozing from his wound. She stays hidden for a moment, making sure that nobody else is around before she stalks up to the man and quickly finishes the job. She grimaces at the now a crimson knife and she quickly wipes the blade on the man's black HYDRA uniform.
She has never enjoyed killing people but she also knows that death is inevitable in war. Yes, that man may have had a family, a wife, and friends but she also knows that given the chance, he would have more than likely done the same to her.
A lot of undeserving people had to die for her to be here right now, with Bucky and Steve. People that she had killed for HYDRA. But she can't undo her actions so she just has to hold out hope that they found peace, wherever they are now. Because her actions can't be undone, no matter how much she wishes they can.
Bucky and Steve walk up to her, both wearing shocked looks on their faces as she stands over the man's dead body. She promptly pushes those thoughts from her head and gives them a wide grin, placing her knife back into her utility belt.
"See, I'm fine." She tells Bucky who rolls his eyes at her frustratedly.
Steve gives the two an annoyed look and quickly steps in before this petty dispute compromises their mission. "Air out your dirty laundry later." He says frustratedly to the two of them. "We have a job to do." He continues before he heads off towards the now unarmed entrance to the base.
With a sigh, Allie hurriedly follows after him with Bucky hot on her heels, neither looking very happy. They rush up to the tin door and take a second to form a plan before they head in.
"On the count of three, I'll open the door then follow me in." Steve orders and the two give him a nod, pulling out their guns and checking to make sure how many bullets they have.
"One, Two," Steve counts as they all nestle up against the dark brick wall of the base, ready to attack. "Three." He shouts and nearly rips the entire door off its hinges before he storms into the base, with Bucky and Allie shortly behind him.
Allie rapidly fires her gun as she sprints into the room, taking down as many of the HYDRA soldiers as she can. Her finger hurriedly pulls down on the trigger and she watches bodies collapse on the floor before they even have a chance to pull out there own weapons.
From the corner of her eye, she sees more and more soldiers filing into the room so she ducks behind a wall to give herself some protection as the battle rages on around her. The violet sound of gunfire cracks in the air and she has no time to check if Steve or Bucky are safe. She has to fight.
She peeks around the corner of the wall and sees that Steve and Bucky are taking down most of the men but with the constant stream of soldiers coming into the room, they will be soon overwhelmed. She almost grins when she sees Steve fling his now iconic shield at the HYDRA agents, taking down five of them with a single throw.
She quickly turns back around and fires her gun, watching the men fall to the ground in heaps until she hears the all too familiar 'click' of the weapon, indicating that she has run out of bullets. But instead of pulling out her other gun, she sprints towards the few remaining soldiers and faces them in hand to hand combat.
She jumps onto a nearby wall as she nears the men and pushes off of it, using the momentum to create an even more powerful punch that immediately renders the soldier unconscious.
Another soldier soon enters her field of vision and throws a punch towards her face that she effortlessly evades. But while his arm is outstretched, she latches onto it and flips him onto the ground with ease, hearing the gratifying 'thud' that his body makes with the cool concrete.
As she kneels over the now unconscious guard's body, she pries the gun out of his hand and fires away at the last few HYDRA soldiers that are left, and within seconds, the fight seems to have come to an end.
Allie keeps the revolver held up as she surveys the room, looking for any other men but she comes up empty, only finding a few discarded documents and artillery in the now blood-filled ammunition room.
Allie turns back around and sees Steve and Bucky doing the same and then they all lock eyes, ready to continue on with the mission. "I think we are good," Steve says and Allie nods in response, pulling off her backpack that has the bomb inside.
"Right, I'll place the first bomb. Keep a lookout in case we missed any." She tells the two boys as she walks over to an empty corner in the room and starts rigging up the explosive. She delicately pulls the bomb out of the bag and begins attaching it to the wall. She connects the wires together gingerly and lets out a sigh of relief when she sees the red button on the side flash, indicating that it is now active. She presses the red button then hops back up onto her feet.
"It's done, let's make our way to the other end." She informs Bucky and Steve as she hurries back over to them. Steve peers out into the hallway and checks for any remaining soldiers.
"I think we are clear," Steve says, satisfied that there are no soldiers hiding in the hallway that are ready to gun them down. He turns back to Allie and Bucky and points down towards the south end of the building.
"The second bomb has to be planted down the south end of the building. We get this done then we get out." Steve declares and Allie nods, wanting to get this mission over as quickly as possible."Alright, let's file out." Steve orders and begins to make his way down the hallway.
Allie quickly makes her way out of the room too, clutching at the gun in her hand as she surveys the seemingly deserted hallway. The hallway is like any other typical HYDRA base. The walls are painted grey with lights that flicker on and off, creating an ominous vibe as they stalk down the empty corridor.
"Bomb's been planted, Cap." Allie hears Dernier say over their comms which makes her jump slightly from the sudden noise.
"Good, now go see if the others need any help," Steve tells Dernier and once again the line returns back to silence.
Allie feels her grip on the gun relax as it seems that nobody is left in this corridor and she thinks back to the debrief in the plane. It was quite odd that they were being sent back on a mission when they had only just got back from one the other day. Colonel Phillips hadn't even mentioned why they were storming this place but she guesses that he wouldn't have needed to anyway. They all agreed without a single thought or question.
"Why did the Colonel even want this mission to happen right now?" She asks Steve, thinking that if anyone would probably know why it would be him.
Steve turns around to Allie with a slight crease in his forehead. "They intercepted plans that said that this base was planning a massive air strike that needed to be stopped immediately." He answers and Allie nods, now walking alongside Steve.
The hallway continues on for a few more feet then turns to the right which is where Allie assumes they have to plant the second bomb. But then just as they are about to round the corner of the hallway, more gunshots crack in the air.
The sound is almost as loud as thunder, and the suddenness of it causes Allie to pull her gun up and aim it towards the soldiers that stand a good 30 feet from her. "Cover!" Steve shouts beside her but before she has the chance to pull down on the trigger, she is hauled back towards the corner and almost flung onto the floor.
Her gun clatters to the ground and she barely stops herself from hitting the floor too as she quickly grabs ahold of the wall on her side. Allie looks up and sees that Bucky was the one who pulled her back and she immediately feels rage bubble through her. He doesn't even bother to check if she is okay and instead turns back around and begins shooting down the corridor.
She almost growls in anger as Steve and Bucky try, unsuccessfully may she add, to take out the guards that are lurking around the corner. So she furiously picks up her gun and weaves around Bucky and Steve to get a decent view of the guards.
She easily spots one soldier that is standing behind a cupboard and another one that is hiding in a doorway so Allie waits until they both bend around again to take a shot. When they do, she sends a single bullet into one man's forehead and another into the other man's chest.
Their bodies slump to the floor and the incoming assault ceases. All three of them wait for a few moments before they slowly make their way into the hallway to make sure there is no one left.
When they are certain that they are the only ones in the corridor, Allie turns around to Bucky and barely resists the urge to slap him across the face. She narrows her eyes at him menacingly and watches as he avoids her eyes, turning back around to Steve as if he did nothing.
"Nice shot, Allie!" Steve says and Allie gives him a tight smile. She nods back at him before she turns and points at the door at the end of the hallway.
"That's the room, right?" She asks as she cautiously makes her way towards the door. Steve nods back at her as he pulls the magazine of bullets from his belt to load into his gun.
"It is." He answers as they near the door. He expertly readies his gun before he presses his ear against the steel door, trying to listen for anything that could tell him what is hidden behind it. All he hears is a few muffled voices that seem to be speaking in German.
He pulls away from the door and looks over at Allie and Bucky who are standing back's against the grey wall with their guns pointed towards the roof. "Ready?" He asks, raising an eyebrow.
"When am I not?" Allie replies sarcastically with a small nod as she places her thumb over the trigger of her gun. But she quickly whirls her head around when she hears Bucky mumbles something under his breath, sounding rather irritated.
She gives him an enraged glare and can't help but let a snarl fall from her lips. "Bucky." She says threateningly and he looks at her nonchalantly. Steve rolls his eyes at the two and quickly tells them to snap out of it.
"One..." He starts and Allie feels her body tense up, ready to fight. "Two, three, Go!" He shouts and they all burst into the room, bullets flying out of their guns and hitting their targets.
But unlike last time, these guards are a lot harder to subdue.
The HYDRA agents quickly duck under tables or anything else that they could fit behind which forces Allie, Steve, and Bucky to do the same.
The small bullets cut through the air, each one ripping through whatever is in its path. Allie can hear the 'thud' of a bullet piercing into wood or some other inanimate object which brings no relief to her tense body. As horrible as it is, she needs these bullets to hit people.
"Guys, we have planted the second bomb and are making our way back to the rendezvous point with the other team." Allie hears Dum Dum say through her comms as she bites her lip in frustration when another one of her bullets misses its target.
"Copy." She hears Steve grunt and she quickly turns her focus back to the mission.
She peeks out from the desk that she is standing behind and catches a glimpse of an all too familiar black HYDRA uniform that is hiding behind a cupboard on her right. So she waits until the man reveals himself and she sends a bullet hurtling towards his skull. The bullet remains true to its aim and the man quickly slumps to the floor, now just a shell of the person he once was.
With a relieved sigh, she hurriedly checks that nobody else is on her side of the room before she looks over to Steve who is directly on her left. "I'm clear!" She shouts, struggling to be heard over the onslaught of bullets that reign down on them.
Steve stops shouting for a second and looks over to Allie. Small beads of sweat glisten on the parts of his forehead that aren't obscured by his dark blue helmet.
"We'll cover for you. Get the bomb in position." He shouts back as he takes off his backpack and slings it on the ground to her feet. She bends down and picks the bag up gently before giving Steve a nod.
But before she has the chance to duck around the corner, she hears Bucky yell across the room to her and Steve. "No, I'll do it." He insists and Allie rolls her eyes at him, now completely fed up with his behavior.
"No Bucky, I need you to stay here and help cover Allie," Steve responds and Bucky shakes his head defiantly.
"But-" He begins and is quickly cut off by Steve. "There's no time for arguing! She's going." He yells and quickly makes his way over to Allie's side.
She gives him a nod of appreciation and a small smile which he returns. "Go." He tells her and she quickly turns around and takes off, weaving her way around bodies and tables that litter the floor.
She raises her gun and takes down a few soldiers before they have the chance to shoot her and then ducks behind a desk when she hears a gunshot resonate throughout the room.
"Watch your right, Allie!" Steve shouts out from behind the table that she was originally hiding behind. She then peeks out to see what Steve was talking about and hisses when she feels a bullet graze her arm. She ducks back behind the table and looks down to see if the graze is anything serious. Thankfully, it didn't tear her new suit so she knows that her arm is fine.
"Allie?" She hears Bucky ask worriedly through her comms and she quickly shakes her head, ignoring the slight sting that she feels in her arm. She then scans around the corner again and sends a bullet straight into the agent's chest
"I'm alright." She answers as she gets back up and sprints towards the back wall. She hastily pulls the bomb out of the backpack as she runs and nearly slams it on the wall when she reaches it. She knows that she should be more careful but she needs to get this done as quickly as possible so that they can all get out of here.
"Bomb's in position," She says through her comms as she pushes down on the red button on the side of the bomb. "Let's head out."
She dashes back to the boys who are taking down the last men and they all quickly retreat back through the door.
"Good, I don't want to hang around here for any more than we have to." She hears Bucky mutter as they race down the hallway and make their way out of the base.
. ☾ .
The mission was, by all means, a success. Nobody got hurt, they all completed their parts of the mission well, and they flew away seeing the base being turned into a pile of rubble and ash.
She should have been happy that her first mission back was a success.
But she wasn't.
She was absolutely livid. Bucky had been acting like a brat and it nearly compromised the whole mission. There were so many times where he nearly got them all caught just because he couldn't accept her being on a mission again.
But what made her feel worse is the fact that he didn't trust her.
He didn't trust her ability to protect herself even though she had been doing it her whole life. She had been protecting herself ever since she was five and yet he thinks that just because she got hurt once, she'll never be able to protect herself again. She had been taught how to look after herself way before he was in the picture and just because he is in it now, doesn't mean that he knows how to do it better.
So she sat silently on the plane back to London by herself. Of course, the guys would make conversation with her and she would answer them, but they saw that she wasn't it the mood and so they let her be.
Bucky, on the other hand, wouldn't shut up. It was almost as if he was gloating in her face. He was completely neglecting her and her feelings which began to piss her off more and more as she dwelled in her own thoughts, which was a very dangerous place for her to be.
She knew that she had to speak to him about it and as frustrated as she was, she was willing to wait until they are alone to do it. It took everything in her to not drag him out of the room by his ear and scream at him until her throat was hoarse. And as much as she wanted to do that, she knew that all that would do was make things worse.
So she waits until they finally land in London.
The second that the plane touches the ground, she is on her feet and stalking over to Bucky, not bothering to hide her frustrated glare.
"Bucky, we need to talk." She says as emotionlessly as possible and before he even has the chance to respond, she takes a hold of the sleeve of his shirt and drags him off the plane. She hears him splutter out some words behind her but she continues to pull him towards an empty tent.
The second that they enter the tent, she lets go of his arm and whirls around, crossing her arms of her chest with an obvious look of distaste on her face.
"What was that today?" She seethes, leaning back against the small table that occupies the center of the room. The tent seems to be some sort of meeting room with all sorts of documents littering the room. But Allie's eyes were hardened on Bucky's, not bothering to take a peek at what could be some very important reports.
"What do you mean?" Bucky answers, feigning innocence which makes Allie roll her eyes.
"Are you joking?" She responds, eyes narrowing at Bucky who just shrugs his shoulders in response. Even though she feels pure white, hot anger course through her veins, she also feels somewhat shocked at Bucky's attitude.
This isn't the Bucky that she knows.
Bucky is loving, kind and trusting. Yes, he is protective but he doesn't act like an asshole about it. He has never once doubted her before and she thought that he was proud of everything that she had achieved.
But this was a side of Bucky she had never witnessed before.
This Bucky thought he knew best and was reckless. He didn't trust her and he didn't trust Steve either. Not only did he nearly get himself killed, he nearly got them all killed.
That isn't her Bucky.
She shakes her head at him, completely frustrated. "You were being way too overprotective today Bucky. You were constantly pushing me out of the way and you weren't letting me participate in the mission at all." She argues, her face red with suppressed anger.
"That's not true!" Bucky exclaims bitterly as his striking blue eyes darken and match her glare.
Allie can't help but let out the scoff that she had been trying to hold back. It is hard for her to contain the anger that she feels because every time he opens his mouth and lets another baseless response tumble from his lips, she feels the rage that flows through her grow more and more.
"If you are going to lie, at least make it somewhat believable." She retorts before she takes a deep breath, trying to reign back in her anger. "I really hope that this is a one-off because we can't afford to keep doing this on other missions." She warns him, clenching her fists by her sides.
All she wants to do is make him understand her point, not create a war of words that will just cause pain to both of them. So she tries to hold back her raging sea of anger so that it won't force her to say things she does not mean. Which she is finding very, very hard.
"I was just looking after you, doll!" He snaps back and she shakes her head at him. If he was truly trying to look after her he would have supported her rather than try to force her to stop. He should have assisted her in her return back to missions.
"No, you weren't trusting me." She tells him cooly and he furrows his brows.
"I do trust you." He responds but this time sounding much less angry as he runs a hand through his dark locks stressfully.
"Then why didn't you let me do my job instead of making me sit on the sidelines and letting you guys do all the work for me?" She questions, cocking her eyebrow at him.
"I just don't want you getting hurt." He tries to justify his actions but she knows that there has to be something more than that. Bucky has always tried to protect her on missions but he had never gone to that extent before.
"And I don't want you getting hurt either Buck, but you don't see me acting that way on missions." She counters, watching as Bucky finally starts to realize that he is beginning to run out of excuses.
She takes a deep breath before she continues. "You keep forgetting that I have been doing these sort of things for years. I was literally raised to be the perfect soldier and I have been training much longer than you have Bucky. But I have never acted the way that you have today because I know your abilities and I trust you."
"I'm sorry doll. It's just..." He starts but then lets out a reluctant sigh. "Do you know how scared I was when I saw your body bleeding to death outside that base on that mission?" He questions and Allie shakes her head.
"No." She sighs, "No, I don't."
"I was more scared than what I had ever been in my life because I thought I was going to lose you. I couldn't imagine a life without you in it and when I saw you on the brink of death, it terrified me. It still terrifies me, the thought that even you could be taken away from me." He tells her, taking a step forward and keeping his eyes locked on hers.
Allie lets out a guilty sigh as she pieces it all together. "Buck-" She starts but is promptly cut off.
"No, I'm sorry that you feel like I don't trust you. I trust you more than anyone else in my life. It's just that I don't trust everyone else. I don't ever want to entrust your life in something that could ever mean I would never see you again." He tells her and she takes a step forward and wraps her arms around him, letting her pent up anger dissipate from her body.
"I love you so much doll and I just don't want to lose you." He whispers into her ear as he drops his head in the crook of her neck.
"I love you too Buck." She tells him. "But next time, tell me about these things alright? I never thought about it from your perspective and because I didn't, that's why I got mad. If you tell me these things we can avoid quarrels like this." She continues as the slowly break apart, looking up into his captivating cobalt eyes.
"Alright. I'm sorry, doll." He murmurs and she gives him a small smile. "It's aright Buck, and I'm sorry too." She says and is just about to turn around when Bucky suddenly remembers something.
"Oh wait!" He announces which slightly startles Allie. He reaches around and pulls something silver out from his back pocket before he holds it out towards Allie. "Here, take this." He beckons and she furrows her brows as she picks up the object and inspects it closely.
"It's your dog tag." She says as she looks at the imprint of his name on the small silver plate. "Why are you giving it to me?" She asks as she looks back up and meets his gaze with a questioning look.
"Because this way you will always have a piece of me, no matter where I am. And it's a way that I can say sorry. I know that I shouldn't have acted like that today but I just couldn't help it." He shrugs and his cheeks turn the slightest bit rosy as he realizes how cheesy he sounds.
"Buck, it's okay. Let's just forget about it yeah?" Allie tells him with a small smile and Bucky nods back at her. She then turns her gaze back down to the small dog tag and runs her fingers over the minuscule letters that make up Bucky's identification.
"James Buchanan Barnes from the 107th." She recites as she feels the cool metal beneath the pads of her thumb which causes a small smile to make its way onto Bucky's lips. She then hangs the chain around her neck and pulls her own one off.
She always wears her dog tag mainly because she forgets to take it off and finally, her forgetfulness has paid off. She hands Bucky her own small dog tag with a happy grin and he takes it in his own much larger hands.
"Alexandra Williams, spy operative. Damn your's sounds a lot cooler!" He jokes and Allie lets out a small chuckle, shaking her head happily at him.
This is her Bucky.
She is so glad that they were able to sort out that argument because moments like these are the moments that she will always cherish. Moments where they are both happy and feel like they are on top of the world. They can bask in each other's love and know that no matter what happens next, they will always have these memories to return to.
"Now what do you always say? You will forever be my always?" She jokes with a small grin as Bucky throws his arm around her shoulder and guides her out of the tent.
"No, that doesn't have the same ring to it." He beams, knowing that she does actually know the saying. He looks down at the girl that he has wrapped in his arms and the smile on his face grows. She gazes up at him with an almost identical smile pulling at her pink lips.
Both of them can't help but think there must be something in the other person's smile that makes them feel like this. Butterflies erupt in their stomachs at the sight and the sun almost seems dull in comparison to the warmth of their smiles. They had the kind of smile that made all other thoughts fade away and made you feel completely ecstatic inside.
And all it took was one smile for them to go back to the way things were.
"It goes something like, you will always be my forever."

A/N - Hey everyone,
Once again I'm sooooo sorry about the long wait but I hope this long chapter makes up for it! Recently I have been up to my neck in tests and assignments but now that first term is ending, I will have more time to dedicate to finally finishing this book!!
If everything goes according to plan, there will be five more chapters which I hope to have out before mid-late April! It's scary that 'Tricks' is nearly over but I can't wait to see your reactions about the end of this book!
ALSO, sorry if the editing is crap on this chapter! I was rushing to get it out but hopefully I'll have some time to re-read it tomoz or the day after.
Now onto the questions,
1. What did you think of the chapter?
2. Do you have any predictions about the end of the book?
3. Would you guys like a sequel?
4. Do you prefer longer chapters (like this which is around 5000 words) or shorter chapters?
- Grace xx
