Bucky awakes with a sigh, glancing at the all too familiar concrete walls of his cells. He lays stiffly on his cot, too bruised and battered to move a single muscle. A heavy breeze filters in from the barred window, chilling his bones until they feel as brittle as porcelain.
His once short chocolate hair has now grown out and messily hangs around shoulder height. He would push the hair out of his face but one shoulder is dislocated from his last 'encounter' with his captors. And on the other hand... well he doesn't actually have one.
He barely remembers how he ended up in HYDRA. But from what he can piece together, he must have lost his arm in the fall from the train.
Being held in this cell has deadened his sense of time. Minutes feel like days. Days feel like weeks. Weeks feel like months. And for all he knows, he has been here for years, wasting away in this desolate place.
Time has slowly become nothing more than a nuisance to Bucky. He used to worry about not having enough time, and now, he wishes he has no more.
Loud, bellowing footsteps suddenly come from the hallway outside Bucky's cell, breaking him from his melancholic thoughts. With a groan, Bucky keeps his eyes trained on the window opposite him in a vain attempt to ignore the soldier that will soon be standing behind his barred chamber.
"How many times do you bastards need to hear me say no." Bucky snarls, trying to hide the chattering of his teeth to maintain his proud facade.
"It's been two years Mr. Barnes, you would think you would of tired from repeating the same word all the time." A foreign voice responds, clicking their tongue in disapproval.
Bucky whips his head around, startled by the strange addition to his usual routine of torture. "You aren't the regular Russian prick who tortures me." He comments as he looks the man up and down.
The unknown man stares at Bucky with his striking cobalt eyes that match Bucky's own in intensity. However, his short chestnut hair is much lighter than Bucky's. It is almost dirty blond in color and is cut fairly short, styled into a quiff at the front. His face is framed by his thick facial hair which looks freshly cut.
"My men have not done your intelligence justice, Mr. Barnes." The man mocks, clicking his tongue sarcastically. Bucky rolls his eyes at the jab but chooses to ignore it. Instead, he takes note of how the man mentions that it was 'his men'.
"Who are you?" Bucky questions frustratedly, looking over the man's uniform in an attempt to find any indication of his rank or authority.
"I can be a friend if you wish." The man responds which makes Bucky scoff in disgust.
"I highly doubt that." He spits.
"Your loss then."
"What the hell do you want?" Bucky growls, clearly exasperated with this conversation already.
"Personally, I'd quite prefer to dispose of you, Mr. Barnes. However, my superiors have some more appealing ideas when it comes to you." The man informs him with a distinct look of objection on his face. "And even though I could persuade them to get rid of you, you also mean too much to lyubov moya / my love."
Bucky's brows immediately furrow at the man's last words. He has heard them before, a very long time ago. Back when she was alive.
"What?"
"You know who I am talking about. Tallish girl, long chocolate hair, beautiful ebony eyes-" The man continues with a smirk and Bucky's eyes immediately bulge out of their sockets.
"Allie! She's alive?" He gasps, his heart thumping against his chest as her name tumbles from his incredibly chapped lips.
"She sure is." He grins wickedly.
Bucky feels his heart ache for Allie. It hadn't stopped since he thought she had died all those years ago. And every day that he had been imprisoned here for, he couldn't help but think of how she had been held here for most of her life. All the torture that she was forced to endure as a child.
But he can't believe that she is alive.
But despite the news, he almost wishes that she did die back on that fateful mission because he knows that death would be better than being imprisoned in HYDRA again. If she was here, his guilt would increase tenfold because he didn't protect her from HYDRA like he had promised.
They had always had each other's backs and Bucky had let her be taken back by HYDRA. He let them torture her for 2 entire years without knowing she was even alive.
But when he looks up into the man's eyes, he knows that his worse nightmare has just come true.
"How do you-" He starts but the man seems to have already guessed Bucky's question.
"Allie and I go way back, Mr. Barnes. And you seem like a smart man so I think that you can guess who I am." He sneers and it doesn't take long for Bucky to put the pieces together.
"You're Mikael." He gasps as he rises to his feet, now standing a few feet taller than Mikael who grins wickedly at him.
"That I am." He responds, clasping his long fingers in front of him while Bucky's own frail fingers grasp at the bars that separate him from Allie's childhood best friend.
"You are supposed to be dead." He mutters, shaking his head in disbelief. Even though it was years ago, Bucky still remembers Allie telling him that Mikael had been shot in the head by Schmidt when she was just a young girl. And from what Bucky understands, no one can survive a bullet through the head.
'Why can't people just stay dead', he groans internally.
"So was she. But I saved her and she saved me." Mikael responds cryptically and Bucky feels anger flare in his chest.
"She thought that you were dead. She grieved for you for years." He growls, pulling against the rusting bars with his arm which makes Mikael laugh ominously.
"The thing is Mr. Barnes, I can't die." He grins and Bucky furrows his brows in confusion. Mikael seems to enjoy leaving people confused over his words, and it is beginning to piss Bucky off.
"What-"
"But that is a story for another time. You have an important decision James, an easy decision." Mikael informs him to which Bucky rolls his eyes. "The war taught us much. We have learnt that humanity will never give up its freedom, even if it means their ultimate doom. Humanity needs to surrender its freedom willingly."
Bucky groans as he hears the same regurgitated speech that has been forced down his throat for 2 years. The same speech that sounds like a lovely promise for a better future but is vague in its methodology. "What's that got to do with me?"
Mikael smirks at Bucky's question. "It's got everything to do with you. HYDRA needs to go covert. We can't afford any more open rebellions or humanity will never surrender willingly. Which is why we need a new race of soldiers. Soldiers that can work in the shadows to bring forward this new era for mankind." He declares with a wicked gleam in his eye.
"And you want me to be one of your soldiers?" Bucky almost laughs at the preposterous idea.
But Mikael doesn't seem to find it as absurd as Bucky thinks it is. "We do." He answers, nodding his head.
Then, to Bucky's surprise, Mikael pulls out a set of gold keys and opens the cell door. Bucky's hand fall from the steel bars as he looks at Mikael wearily, not trusting his motives for letting him out.
"What are you doing?" He questions, refusing to leave the confines of his cell.
"Follow me, Mr. Barnes. And don't even think about doing something that you will regret later." Mikael orders, beckoning Bucky forward and out into the dim concrete hallway.
Bucky's hesitance must have been quite clear on his face because Mikael's expression hardens and anger dances in his cobalt eyes at Bucky's lack of movement. "Don't make me ask twice." He warns and with an exhausted sigh, Bucky steps out of his cell.
Bucky cautiously follows Mikael down the dark hallway, his eyes firmly trained on Mikael's back in case of any sudden attacks. But despite Bucky's readiness to anticipate a fight, he knows that he is in no condition to actually win a fight.
These past 2 years of imprisonment has caused Bucky to drop off most, if not all, of his body weight, including all his muscle mass. His reflexes have slowed considerably and just this walk down to wherever Mikael is taking him is making Bucky nauseous.
"HYDRA has big plans for the future." Mikael continues as their footsteps echo down the empty hallway. "Plans that you could be apart of."
"And what? You think that I will say yes to your offer?" Bucky laughs at the sheer audacity of the thought. "I have fought against you in the war for almost 3 years!"
Mikael shakes his head with a light smile, already expecting what Bucky's reaction would be. "No, I knew that you would say no. But if we want humanity to give up its freedom, we should expect the same for those who work with us." He says as they reach the end of the hallway.
In front of the pair stands a single steel door. Mikael looks back at Bucky who is still down the hallway hobbling after him and Mikael gives him a taunting wink. He then knocks on the door and immediately it is flung open.
The two enter the room and before Bucky even has the chance to blink, two armed guards grasp ahold of Bucky's limbs. "Hey!" He shouts out in surprise and tries to wriggle out of their hold with all the strength that he can muster.
The men quickly overpower Bucky and force him to face Mikael who stands in front of what Bucky assumes is double-sided glass with a sinister grin on his face. "Bucky, there's no need to be so impulsive! You have plenty of time to think about your answer." He responds with a light laugh.
"My answer won't change. It's still a no!" Bucky growls and in response, he feels the two guards tighten their hold on his arms until they begin to ache.
"Well isn't that unfortunate boys," Mikael smirks, addressing the two guards who remain completely stoic, acting as if they haven't even been spoken to.
"So what, now you'll let me go or will I be sent back down to another one of your torture chambers again?" Bucky grumbles, eyeing the room that sits behind Mikael cautiously. In the middle of the room, there is a large metal contraption attached to a steel chair which sends shivers down Bucky's spine just at the sight of it.
"No, I'm going to give you some incentive to rethink your decision," Mikael smirks ominously before he turns and bangs on the glass window. "Привести ее! / Bring her!"
Bucky gasps at what he sees unfold in front of his eyes.
A frail, young girl is pushed into the center of the room, bound in ropes by her hands and feet. Two burly guards force her down into the seat and she shows no sign of resistance. Her dark hair is matted and sticking out at odd angles while her chocolate eyes are devoid of any emotion.
The girl looks hollow. Like the shadow of the person she once was.
But not just any girl. It's Allie.
His girl.
"Allie!" Bucky gasps in shock, feeling grief squeeze tightly at his heart as he takes in the scene in front of him. He watches in horror as they hook her up to the machine and force a mouthpiece in between her cracking lips and into her mouth.
"What are you doing to her?" He mumbles, unable to pull his eyes from the person who has haunted his mind for two years.
"Солдат, установите машину. / Soldier, set up the machine." Mikael ignores Bucky's question but turns back to face him as the men in the other room prep Bucky's 'incentive'.
"You have a promising future ahead of you Mr. Barnes. It's just a shame that you can't see that too." Mikael tells him coldly and stares at him unflinchingly. "Начните с третьего уровня. / Start with level three." He shouts, without a single bat of an eye.
The men twist the dial, and almost immediately Allie's body begins convulsing as the violent electrical currents pulsate through her body. Her screams are muffled from the mouthpiece that sits in her mouth, preventing her from biting through her tongue due to the intense pain. Her body strains against the thick rope that restrains her tightly to her chair, not allowing her to escape the torture.
"Stop it! Stop hurting her!" Bucky screams at Mikael, pulling with all his might to reach the abused girl that sits in the opposite room, writhing in pain.
"Stop!"
Mikael turns and gazes at Allie for a few moments before he tears his eyes away, feeling heavy with guilt. "It hurts me too, watching her writhe in pain." He tells Bucky, stepping towards the man who still struggles against the soldiers hold. "But you can stop it, Mr. Barnes. All you have to do is say yes."
Bucky ignores Mikael's comments as he finds himself captive to watching his love being tortured right in front of his eyes. "Please stop hurting her! Please!" He begs.
"All you have to do is say yes." Mikael repeats, stepping into Bucky's line of vision.
Bucky's head is waging its own war. With one side begging him to agree, to do anything in his power to get them to stop hurting Allie. His heart fuels that side of the battle, craving to be put back together with its other half.
But the other side tells him to find another way. Allie would never want him to side with HYDRA, even if it meant her pain. Or her death.
That side, however, is slowly being reduced to nothing more than a whisper as he can do nothing more than watch on as Allie endures horrendous pain because of him. They are torturing her for him.
"No! Please!" He pleads, falling down to his knees in despair. Tears fall down his face, mirroring Allie's own as they both undergo their own versions of hell.
Mikael sighs and shakes his head, surprised at Bucky's resistance. "Уровень седьмой!/ Level seven!" He shouts.
Allie's mouth falls open as the electricity surges throughout her gaunt body. A guttural scream pushes past her lips as her face is frozen in agony. Her screams pierce the air, accurately portraying the raw quality of pain that she is feeling.
She is consumed with an agony that knows no limit or bounds.
And Bucky is forced to watch on, eyes wide with horror and his fists clenched with his nails digging deeply into the palms of his hand. He doesn't need to feel the electricity running through his body to know how painful it is because the sheer terror in Allie's cries is enough to convince him.
"Stop! All right! I'll do it!" He yells, finally closing his eyes. "Just stop hurting her." He whispers the last part, dropping his head onto his chest in defeat.
Mikael lets out a relieved smile and pats Bucky on the back with a smile, overjoyed with his decision. "Довольно. / Enough." He yells to the men in the other room.
Bucky looks up at Mikael, worry etched into his face, "I'll do it. Just please don't hurt her again." He pleads.
"Smart decision, Mr. Barnes." Mikael nods before he turns to the guards who hold Bucky's dangling body. "Start prepping him." He orders.
The two men nod at Mikael and begin dragging Bucky away but he plants his feet into the ground defiantly. "Can I see her? Please!" He shouts, straining against the soldiers' strong grasps.
Mikael orders the two guards to halt in his native tongue and looks over at Bucky with a hardened stare. "I would highly advise that you don't see Allie, Mr. Barnes. She is in quite a fragile state."
But Bucky doesn't care.
He looks through the glass and feels guilt claw at his chest when he sees Allie's current state. She is still splayed out in the chair, her eyes twitching uncontrollably as her body expects the next shock that will never come. Her body spasms every couple of seconds as her nerves are beyond damaged from the pain that she just endured.
But she's there, sitting in front of him, albeit not in perfect condition.
But at least she is alive which is not what he had thought for the past 2 years. And he'll be damned if he isn't going to see her now while he has the chance.
"Please, let me see her." Her persists, looking pleadingly at Mikael.
Mikael sighs and looks at Allie, knowing that he should do her this one last favor. He should let Bucky and Allie say their goodbyes because he knows what it is like when that right is denied.
"Alright, make it quick." He orders and nods curtly at the guards who begrudgingly release their holds on Bucky.
The second that he is free of their grasps, Bucky darts towards the door that separates him from Allie. He flings the door open with a newfound sense of urgency and rushes to Allie's side, ignoring how the guards have lifted their guns and have them aimed at his forehead.
"Allie! Oh God, Allie! What have they done to you?" He cries as he falls to his knees and cups Allie's gaunt face in his hands.
But Allie immediately recoils from his touch and goes tumbling to the floor to get away from him. Her eyes are wide with fear and she is barely able to move away from Bucky as her body is still in shock from the pain.
"Who are you? I don't know you!" She cries frightfully.
Bucky's eyes widen at Allie's reaction and he looks at her in confusion. It's Allie, his Allie, and she doesn't seem to remember him. Surely she remembers him?
"Allie? It's me, Bucky!" He reminds her, almost pleading with her to remember who he is.
"I don't know who you are!" She shouts and Bucky is left stunned. Physically this is his Allie, but mentally, they have done something to her. They have stripped her of all her best parts. They have stolen her memories.
"What do you mean you don't know who I am! I'm Bucky! Your Bucky!" He begs, praying that she will remember. But all he gets in return is a frightful look and her head sinking into her shaking hands.
"Mr. Barnes, I warned you that she was in no place to see you," Mikael announces and Bucky's head whips around with his eyes alight in rage.
"What have you done to her!" He snarls.
"We have made her into the best version of herself," Mikael tells him, looking down at the frightened girl with a smirk. "We did to her what we are going to do to you."
Bucky ignores Mikael's last words and instead turns back around to Allie, holding onto the slightest bit of hope that she will remember him. He slowly pulls her hands away from her face, ensuring that he won't frighten her.
Allie lets him encase her hands in his own, but she keeps her gaze firmly planted on the concrete floor. She rocks herself back and forward, muttering incomprehensible word beneath her breath. The sight pains Bucky as he knows what it is like to not be able to understand what is happening to you because of something that HYDRA has done.
"Allie, doll. You know me." He whispers to her and she shakes her head in firm disbelief.
"No, I don't!" She shouts and pulls her hands out from his, clutching them against her chest.
Bucky feels a tear drop from his eye as he inches closer to Allie and holds her face in his hands. "Look at me, doll. Look into my eyes." He pleads and Allie meekly does as he tells her. "You know me."
With a sharp intake of breath, Allie focuses on Bucky's cerulean eyes. And despite not being able to recall anything about this man, she feels an aura of familiarity about him. She focuses on his teary gaze and suddenly an image pops up in front of her eyes.
She sees a woman shooting down HYDRA soldiers with deadly accuracy. With every bullet making its home in someone's body, wounding them fatally. She also sees a blond man doing the same except he has a metal shield held out in front of him. The shield is painted red, silver and blue and is adorned with a bright silver star in the middle.
Together, they fight in harmony. Their attacks are synchronized perfectly and the last thing that Allie sees before the image disappears is the smile that is exchanged between the two when they are done.
Allie gasps as she looks at Bucky in horror. That man was none other than Captain America, the same man that she has been told is her enemy. And that woman was her. Sure, the woman was much healthier looking and stronger than what Allie is now, but the other similarities are unmistakable.
Before she has the opportunity to question Mikael about Captain America, another vision pops into her head. This time she sees herself laying on a cotton bed, wrapped up in someone's arms. She sees the past Allie smile up at whoever's eyes she is looking through now. Her lips part and she assumes that she had begun speaking but Allie can't hear any words come from her mouth. Their conversation almost sounds like it is underwater, being drowned out by a head-splitting 'buzzing' noise.
But she does hear 4 unmistakeable words come from past Allie's lips. Words that leave this Allie reeling as her entire mind spins with questions.
She hears herself say "I love you, Bucky."
And now as she looks at Bucky, she begins to question what the hell she just saw. She loved Bucky? Why? What happened? Why did she know Captain America? How the hell did she end up here? And why can't she remember anything?
"Bucky?" She mumbles and Bucky's face lights up like a tree on Christmas. He is overcome with relief and his lips pull into a massive smile.
"It's me, doll." He breathes out, looking at her happily. "It's me."
"Isn't that fascinating. The power of love caused her to remember! It almost sounds as if it was from a fairytale." Mikael smirks, breaking up their moment. At the sound of his voice, Allie drops her gaze back to the ground and she scrambles up to her feet, still shaking from the electricity.
Bucky follows quickly, jumping up to his feet and ensuring that he is blocking Mikael from the clearly distressed Allie. "Doll, what have they done to you?" He asks.
"I don't know, Buck." She whispers, the nickname falling off her lips effortlessly. "I don't know..."
"Гвардейская. Хватай их./ Guards. Grab them." Mikael orders and without a second to waste, the soldiers pounce. They quickly wrap their hands around the two of them and drag them towards the door.
"No, no, no!" Bucky cries out, not ready to part with her only after just finding out that she has been alive for so long. "Allie!"
"Bucky!" She shouts back but is instantly rewarded with a slap across the face, reminding her of her position at HYDRA.
"Take her to Zola for testing. He goes straight to the Cryo chamber." Mikael commands and the soldiers carry out his orders with unrivaled efficiency. They drag the two away from each other, ignoring the two prisoner's screams that pierce the air, joining together to create a haunted melody that is not unfamiliar to the hallways of HYDRA.
Mikael waltzes out of the room and is greeted with one of HYDRA's lead scientists who quivers under his scrutinizing gaze. "The machine's up and ready." The scientist tells Mikael.
"Good." He answers with a stoic face. "Wipe them both when ready."
The scientist nods and scribbles down some words on the clipboard that is held in his hands. "Soldiers 472003 and 471905 will soon both be complicit." He reads from the paper, anxiously waiting to scurry back off to his lab and leave Mikael's presence.
"No."
The scientist halts his movements and looks up to Mikael in shock. "W-what?" He stutters, not hiding the fact that he is clearly afraid of Mikael.
"I want different names..." Mikael trails off, contemplating his next word. "I like the Winter Soldier for him." He states and the scientist quickly adds that to his paper while he awaits Mikael's next words.
"And for her..." He starts, a smile crawling it's way up his lips.
"Let's call her Trickery."

A/N - Hey everyone!!!
I would really appreciate it if you read this Author's note as there is important information regarding book 2 of this series.
I have decided to slightly alter the events that take place immediately after Bucky's imprisonment so that it makes more sense in this storyline. I know that Bucky was held captive for many years before he became the Winter Soldier but I felt that including Mikael in the transformation of Bucky and Allie created an interesting dynamic that could be explored in the next book.
After this chapter, there will be a short teaser and the title reveal for Book 2 which may take a while to come out because I want to have at least the first chapter of book 2 ready for you guys to read.
In the sequel, you may find the first couple of chapters a bit slow but I do have to cover the 70 years of Bucky and Allie's time at HYDRA before the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes place.
However, as a fair warning without spoilers, there won't be much inclusion of the events of CA: TWS because book 2 is majorly from Allie's perspective. I felt that you guys should probably be aware in case you were looking forward to seeing Allie playing a central role in that movie. Sorry guys :( it sucks because it is also one of my fav marvel movies too.
But without further ado, let's get onto the questions,
1. What do you think of the chapter?
2. What are your predictions for book 2?
3. What do you think of Mikael?
4. What do you think of Spider-man: FFH?
Once again, thanks for reading and have a beautiful rest of your day!
- Grace xx
