Allie was very much grateful when her time staying at the hotel came to an end.
She had spent most of the night thinking, unable to lull her mind to sleep. More often than not, she could only find comfort in the embrace of sleep when she was exhausted. When she too tired to let her thoughts drag by in slow motion. Even then, she would be lucky to get more than three or four hours of sleep. But when she would wake, she would spend the rest of the night consumed by her thoughts anyway.
Slowly, eleven o'clock morphed into twelve, then three, and finally six o'clock. The time trickled by, marked only by those changing glowing numerals. She spent the entire night with her eyes wearily trained on the silhouette of her bedside lamp. When the pale glow of the streetlamp behind it became white from the luminescent sun, she knew her night was over.
But alas, she did spend her time somewhat wisely.
During her fitful hours of thinking, she decided she was going to be called Allie again. She was going to do what Bucky suggested.
She would try to be someone again, someone who deserved to live. Trickery didn't deserve to live. Trickery was a monster, she was each and every definition of evil. And if she wanted to continue being Trickery, then she would have to come to accept all the evil deeds that she carried out in the name of HYDRA.
And she couldn't do that.
So she would be Allie. She would try to be the person that she was before HYDRA, whoever that may be. Even if they weren't the greatest person, surely that had to be better than Trickery. She could have a family again, have friends, have a purpose in life.
Even though she didn't remember anything about herself or her past, she could shape her future and chose to be the version of herself that she wanted to be. She could be a version of Allie who was good, who wouldn't follow in Trickery's footsteps.
This was her opportunity for rebirth and renewal.
So when the clock struck 6 o'clock, Allie immediately jumped out of the disgusting bed and got ready to leave. She couldn't contain her eagerness to get out of the decrepit hotel and hopefully, find someplace better in Bulgaria to stay at.
Bucky, who also got no sleep last night, followed Allie's lead and started gathering his stuff. It took the pair only a few minutes to gather their belongings and exit the hotel, unsuccessfully avoiding the lady at the reception who managed to stall them for a minute or two. Silently, they got into the truck that thankfully, still sat out the front of the hotel, and drove off.
The drive was pretty much spent in silence, with only the occasional comment passing between the two. It wasn't an uncomfortable silence, by all means, it was merely the fact that it was too early for them to talk about the same heavy topics they dealt with yesterday.
It only took them a quarter of an hour to reach their destination, that being the Baltimore-Washington Airport. Allie, who had never been to an airport before, was quite stunned at the sight before her.
The sheer amount of people at the airport alone was astonishing as she couldn't remember ever seeing that many people heading towards the same place before. The roads were congested and Bucky struggled to find somewhere to dump the car. When he did manage to find an empty car space, they were a five-minute walk away from where they initially started looking for a car park.
With only their backpacks in tow, Allie and Bucky made their way towards the main terminal, which was just as mind-blowing for Allie. The airport resembled a shopping mall than anything that Allie had expected, and the inside proved that.
The tiles underfoot gleamed white and everywhere were people milling around. There were two glass elevators leading to the upper floor which seemed to be some kind of food court. In the middle of several open areas were blue fabric-covered seats, centered around shining white tables. The air was cool and only the faint aroma coming down from the food area gave the airport any scent. As the two walked around, heading towards the entrance, Allie gazed at what she believed was a viewing deck where eager children watched the airplanes take off and land.
To say that she was shocked was a drastic understatement.
"The world kept changing while we were with HYDRA." Bucky murmured low enough for just Allie to here. "It takes a bit to get used to but you will."
Allie turned her gaze back to Bucky and nodded, feeling a wave of sadness wash over her at his words. It was a scary thought that whilst they were still at HYDRA, the world kept changing. It evolved and left them behind. And now they were forced to play catch up and adjust before HYDRA could take them again.
But at least Bucky seemed to know where he was going.
Gently taking ahold of her arm, Bucky guided her towards the area for international flights. The queue seemed to stretch for miles, with everybody heading off to completely different places in all corners of the world. Bucky and Allie joined the line, hoping that despite its length, they wouldn't have to wait very long.
Luckily for them, they breezed through the check-in and were directed towards the security screenings. The lady who booked their flight seemed much too chirpy considering the time of the morning it was. She easily got them on the next flight to Bulgaria, but when it came to handing over their passports, Allie began to get nervous.
She didn't know what a passport was, but she guessed it had to be some kind of identification that would let them onto the flight. And knowing HYDRA, she didn't think that they would have considered giving Trickery her own passport if she ever decided to go on the run.
But somehow, Bucky pulled out two passports, one for him and one for her. Where he got the passports from, she didn't know. But she was too relieved to ask. The woman glanced at the passports briefly before handing them back with the same overenthusiastic smile plastered on her face, ushering them off so she could attend the next person.
Then they faced the next challenge, passing through security.
"Have you got your weapons on you?" Bucky whispered lowly as they joined the next queue.
"Yes." Allie answered, having thought to tuck her knives and gun into her waist before they left this morning.
"Good." Bucky nodded, turning his gaze towards the airport security that they were slowly approaching."You will need to use your powers to get us through the metal detector though."
Allie furrowed her brows as she looked at Bucky. "What's that?"
"That machine over there, —" He said, pointing towards the odd frame machine that stood between two guards. " —that's a metal detector. Any type of metal or alloy that goes through it sets off an alarm."
"Why don't we just walk around it?" Allie inquired.
"That's easier said than done. Those men are security and it's their job to stop us." Bucky informed her, slightly worrying as they now only stood a few people away from the checkpoint.
"They can't stop us if they can't see us." Allie mumbled, letting her eyes turn their usual shade of silver as she honed in on her powers. She felt the electrical impulses of everyone's mind in the vicinity. She was almost overwhelmed by it, crushed under the weight of hundreds of people's brains. But she focused on the soldiers in front of her and managed to turn herself and Bucky invisible.
"Go." She told him before she took off, jogging past the security who didn't bat an eye. She felt Bucky follow her lead, and when they were a safe distance away, she dropped her illusion.
"Now where?" Allie asked, turning to Bucky who was giving her an impressed look.
"Towards gate 15 and then we wait for our flight." Bucky answered as he pointed towards where their gate was.
With a nod, she followed after him. They walked in silence, letting the noise of the terminal fill the gap of their conversation. Allie admired the airport, gazing out at the massive planes and watching in amazement as they took off into the crystal clear sky.
But then she realized something. Something that she should have thought of well before she got into the airport with Bucky.
"Wait—" Allie muttered as she felt her body come to a sudden halt. "International flights are the most monitored mode of transport in the U.S. HYDRA will easily be able to find us." She stated, turning her eyes towards Bucky who watched her with furrowed brows.
"Are you trying to turn me in?" She threatened, feeling her eyes flicker silver as she glared at him.
It was a brilliant plan, she would give him credit for that. But Allie was in no mind ready to ever go back to HYDRA. She had so much to learn, to understand. So much freedom to explore. And if Bucky was working for them, well that relationship would have to come to an end.
"No! I am just trying to get us out of the U.S and there's no other way to get to Europe. Or would you rather swim there?" Bucky said sarcastically.
Allie continued glaring at him, trying to deduce whether he was lying or not. She didn't detect any rise in his heart rate or his breathing, but those were things easily controlled. She had known that it was a risky move trusting Bucky because situations like this were not inconceivable. She didn't know him at all, she didn't know where his allegiances lied or what he was capable of.
So she had to trust her gut, and for some unbeknownst reason it was screaming at her to trust him. She had no idea why, but she just knew deep down that he was good, that he wasn't lying.
So she trusted her gut, but that also didn't mean she couldn't still be cautious.
"We are going to get caught Bucky." She growled, feeling her fear slightly ease.
"No, we won't. Now shut up." He mumbled angrily, returning her own glare.
Like a reflex, Allie immediately tensed at his words. A cold chill swept through her body and she felt her hand clutch around her neck on instinct. Tension grew in her face and limbs, her mind replaying the feel of electricity circulating through her body. Her breathing became more rapid, more shallow as her body became consumed by a paroxysm of fear.
It was but a phrase that Bucky had said, and yet she reacted in such a way.
All because she had remembered something.
The memory was really nothing. It held no important event or significance. She didn't know when or where it happened. She didn't even know if it was real. It wasn't even a proper memory, it was just a snippet from her past, no longer than 30 seconds.
She remembered Mikael, his electric blue eyes and lips that were pulled up into a tight snarl. She remembered him growling that same phrase as he glared at her. She remembered the fear, the disappointment, the guilt crawling up through her body.
And then came the pain.
White-hot electricity once harpooned through her body, pulsating through every one of her nerves and frying them beyond recognition. A guttural scream had clawed its way past her lips, almost shaking the room from its intensity. The pain was so strong, so unadulterated, that she had fallen to her knees and resorted to banging her head against the concrete in the vain hope of a reprieve.
But just as quickly as the memory came, it was gone again. The memory faded in the blink of an eye, almost as if it had never been there in the first place. Acting like no more than a figment of her imagination.
Although its aftereffects weren't so swift to follow.
Allie immediately felt her hands claw around her neck, searching for the torture device that was the root of her pain. The cadences of her heart increased tenfold and she felt her breathing become shallower and shallower with each passing second. Her entire body became rigid, resembling a statue rendered frozen.
When her trembling hands didn't clasp onto the black machine that administered her punishments, she felt the air return to her lungs. The device was gone, Steve had ripped it from her aching body back in Washington. He had saved her.
The collar was gone, but it didn't feel entirely gone.
"Allie, what's wrong?" Bucky asked, worry overcoming his blue orbs as he noticed her shuddering figure.
"A-Aren't you going to..." Allie quivered, still clutching her hands around her neck, trying to remind herself that the collar is gone.
She felt so weak.
The fear that had overpowered her body from that lone memory infuriated her. The fact that a measly 30-second memory could leave her so incapacitated left her feeling absolutely livid. She was supposed to be strong and resilient. And yet she felt so alone, so helpless. Like she was well and truly lost in the woods.
She refused to be weak.
"It's uh— It's nothing." Allie muttered, trying to harden her expression and taking a deep breath in.
"No, it's not. What's wrong?" Bucky questioned, shaking his head as he watched her try to wave it off.
"It's nothing!" She bit back, trying to get the message through to him that she didn't want to talk about it.
But Bucky chose to ignore it.
"Allie." He called as he took ahold of her forearm in his, forcing her to turn around and face him. But instead of turning around, she recoiled at his touch, almost as if she had been burned. The way she flinched and her body remained trembling scared him. That in combination with the fear present in her eyes and her reaction to his touch proved to him that something was wrong, and he would stop at nothing to figure out what was going on.
"Allie, tell me what's wrong?" He pleaded softly, begging her to at least give him something.
Allie sighed at his words, knowing that he wasn't going to give up.
"I thought that you were going to shock me." She responded quietly, hoping that the words would just drift off into the wind before Bucky heard them. Praying that he wouldn't hear her confession and that he would just give up. But unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
"W—What? Why would I do that?" Bucky asked, alarm plaguing his features.
"No, it's nothing. Don't worry." She told him, shaking her head as she ran her hand nervously through her dark locks. She knew telling him would be a mistake, that she should have kept it to herself.
"No, I will worry. Why did you think that I was going to electrocute you?" Bucky questioned more forcefully this time as he grew frustrated with her lack of answers. All he was doing was trying to help. He knew first-hand how she felt and he wanted to help ease her pain. But she would have to accept his offer before he could do anything.
And it seemed that getting her to accept would prove to be very difficult.
"Forget it! I'm fine so let's just board the plane." She growled, ready to turn around and walk off. She was beginning to feel antsy the longer they talked about it. Also, the fact that the pair were being surrounded by so many people who were giving them funny looks definitely didn't help either.
But Bucky was reluctant to give up.
He reached out again and took ahold of her waist, forcing her to face him. Forcing her to meet his striking cobalt eyes and see the worry held in them. "Allie, you can tell me." He said softly.
She sighed at his words, knowing that there was no way he was going to let it go now. "I had a flashback, I think. Mikael used to shock me with this collar I used to wear whenever I disobeyed him. If I spoke out of turn or messed something up, I would get shocked." She answered, flicking her gaze from the ground back up to him. "There, are you happy now?" She mumbled snarkily, trying to curb her anger as she noticed pity well in his eyes.
She so did not want to be pitied, especially when she didn't deserve it.
"Of course not. I could never be happy with someone treating you in that way." Bucky responded sincerely, furrowing his brows at her passive-aggressiveness.
"You don't even remember me." Allie countered. "I don't even remember me. So why should you care?"
"I don't need my memories to remember how I feel about you." Bucky answered and Allie felt her body warm because of a foreign feeling elicited by his words. A feeling where her stomach felt like it was doing somersaults and her skin was on fire, burning bright red.
She quickly turned her gaze to the ground, shielding her face with her dark tendrils of hair. The feeling, despite being foreign, also felt familiar. Like a sensation of deja vu.
However, she didn't get much time to contemplate the feeling because Bucky noticed something strange going on behind them.
"Look at your 3 o'clock." Bucky whispered to Allie, keeping his gaze trained on her to avoid arousing suspicion.
Forgetting their past moment, Allie craned her neck towards the direction that Bucky had said and immediately noticed what he was talking about. Hiding in plain sight where a few HYDRA soldiers disguised as airport security. She had counted four men, all equipped with HYDRA issued weapons that she knew were not given to typical airport security.
But it was their dark helmets that gave away their identity. The helmet covered their entire head, shielding away their face behind a visor. It was a helmet designed to withstand her manipulation.
A helmet only made by HYDRA.
The soldiers knew where Bucky and Allie were, and seemed to be waiting for an opportunity to attack them out of the public eye, explaining why they were guarding the major exits around them.
"How many do you count?" Bucky murmured.
"I've got at least 4." Allie responded, meticulously scanning through the crowds to check for any more hidden HYDRA henchmen.
"HYDRA sends undercover squads of at least 5." Bucky said and Allie nodded, knowing that they will have to keep their eyes peeled for the remaining soldier.
As she scanned her environment, Allie noted all the cameras and the crowds of people hanging around in the terminal. She knew she couldn't fool technology and if she tried to use her powers on this many people, there would be no way that she could help Bucky with taking out those soldiers.
"We will need to get out of public areas if we want to get to Bulgaria," Allie informed him.
"Can't you use your illusions." He said perplexed, surprised that her powers weren't the answer to everything.
"I can't use my powers on this many people or the security cameras. And those helmets that the soldiers are wearing are designed to shield their minds from my manipulation." She told him, as they both gazed around the room, looking for an escape.
"Like Magneto's helmet?" He inquired.
"Yes, exactly." Allie nodded before she let out a sigh of relief. "There's an emergency stairwell over there." She said as she pointed towards a doorway located on their immediate left, slightly obscured by an overpriced gift shop.
"That'll do." Bucky muttered before he nodded to Allie, telling her to get ready. The two of them swiftly weave around the crowd and make their way towards the door, slipping inside with ease. They didn't have to look back to know that the soldiers were following them, and within seconds, would be in the stairwell too.
Thankfully, the stairway was rather large, leaving plenty of space for this upcoming fight to take place. Neither of the two knew where the concrete stairwell led but they prayed that if worst came to worst, it would lead them towards an exit.
Hastily, Allie pulled her knife out of her pants and spun it in her hands, knowing that it would be much quieter than using her gun. As she did that, Bucky slipped out his own gun and fixed his silencer on it before he shot at the camera's manning the stairway.
They barely had any time to prepare themselves before the HYDRA soldiers slammed open the door and barrelled into the room. They narrowly avoided Bucky's shots as they ducked behind one of the soldiers airport security shield.
Allie stepped away from Bucky, pulling two of the soldiers towards her. She knew that the only way to win this fight was to fight smart, and that meant splitting the HYDRA guards between them.
The two men whipped out their long, double-ended tasers which they waved dauntingly towards her, knowing she had a thing against electricity. She felt her body stiffen as they circled around her, waiting for her to make the first move. Allie quickly shook away the feeling, knowing there was no time in a fight for fear.
She glanced towards Bucky, who was fighting the other two soldiers effortlessly and seemed to be managing just fine on his own. He didn't need any help, so she turned back to her own fight and narrowed her eyes at them.
And without further ado, Allie lunged.
In the blink of an eye, she sent her knives hurtling towards the first soldier with deadly accuracy. She didn't even wait to hear the satisfying 'thunk' of the knife as it embedded itself in the soldier's hand before she turned to face soldier 2. The screams of the first soldier played in the background as Allie spun on her foot and kicked the taser out of the other man's hand. Both weapons clattering to the ground away from the soldiers, leaving Allie grinning as she successfully rendered both of the men weaponless.
She heard solder 1 pull out her knife and drop it on the floor. But she paid no mind as she swiftly jumped forward and sent a punch aiming towards soldier number 2's head. The man narrowly missed the blow as he ducked towards her right, but was not quick enough to miss her follow up. As he ducked, Allie responded with a powerful uppercut that nailed him right under the chin.
As he stumbled back from the hit, Allie whirled around and barely evaded a punch from soldier 1. Stepping out of the way, she grabbed ahold of his outstretched wrist and twisted his arm, bending it until it reached an unnatural angle and she heard it crack. A howl of pain pushed past the man's lips, but he was quickly silenced as Allie slammed his head against the concrete wall, shattering his obsidian helmet.
But while she was finishing off soldier 1, soldier 2 came up behind her and managed to punch her in the back of her head with enough force that she fell to the ground. White spots filled her vision as she let out her own hiss of pain. While she was incapacitated, the soldier dropped on top of Allie, using his body weight to pin her limbs to the ground.
"Микаэль передает свои пожелания. / Mikael sends his regards." He whispered into her ear, sending chills down her spine at the mention of his name.
Gritting her teeth, Allie didn't give the man enough time to say anything else as she grasped ahold of her knife that had been disregarded on the floor. Her fingers slipped around the tip of the knife which was stained with blood.
Flipping the knife over in her hand, she plunged the it straight into the chink of the man's armor in his abdomen. Immediately he began howling, so Allie took advantage of his pained state and headbutted him, effectively loosening his grip on her.
With ease, she pulled the knife out of the soldier's chest and flipped them both over, so she was now straddling him. She wrapped her nimble fingers around his throat and pushed down, constricting his airway. She felt his body tense under her, seizing as he tried to push her off of him. Then with deadly force, she slammed his head against the ground and felt his body still.
With a sigh, she laboriously pushed herself off of the man and returned to her feet. She knew that both the men were alive, evident by the rhythmic beating of their hearts. She fought the urge to kill the two men, knowing that it would cause more harm than good for them in the long run.
Wiping the blood off of her precious knife, Allie turned around to face Bucky who had just finished up with his last soldier too. The two met each others' gazes before something behind Bucky caught Allie's attention.
Standing just inside the doorway is soldier number 5, who was ready to launch a hand grenade at the two of them. Allie's breath caught in her throat before she quickly forced her body to move. She stepped around Bucky and threw her knife, watching as it streamed through the air and landed in the palm of the man's hand. The grenade clattered to the floor, thankfully with the pin still sitting inside the weapon. Bucky, who was now aware of the threat, whirled around and sent an earth-shattering punch aimed at the man's head. Bucky's metal arm glinted in the light as it made contact with the soldier, shattering his helmet upon impact.
Soldier 5 collapsed on the floor, joining his four other unconscious comrades. A gazed over the scene with satisfaction, knowing that when the men would wake, they would clean up the mess themselves. They didn't need to garner any more unwanted attention, especially when their flight was supposed to board in 10 minutes.
Sighing to himself, Bucky slipped his gun back into his pants as Allie grumbled while she walked over to the HYDRA soldier.
"I just cleaned that." She huffed as she pulled the knife out of the man's hand and wiped the scarlet substance on his dark suit.
"Now boarding, flight QR87956 to Sofia, Bulgaria." A voice said over the intercom, frightening Allie who whipped around with wild eyes. Realizing that it was just an announcement, she calmed slightly and turned to Bucky who was already watching her.
"Let's go, we don't want to miss our flight." He told her, letting a small grin pull at his lips.
So off they went, heading towards their flight in the hope of escaping the deadly reach of HYDRA and the unknown memories of their pasts. All whilst leaving behind 5 unconscious HYDRA soldiers in one of the many emergency stairwells off the Baltimore Airport.
