APPA KNEW THE WAY BACK TO THE SOUTHERN AIR TEMPLE SINCE IT WAS ALSO HIS HOME, BUT AANG STILL DIRECTED THE BISON THE CORRECT WAY SOMETIMES JUST TO BE SURE. The journey back wasn't that long either from where they were in the ice pole, and the four were now currently exploring the grounds where it was once lively, and beautiful, unlike how destroyed it was now.
The energy that was once here was felt by her no more, and all that was left was death, like everything was sucked up and spat back out in a way that ruined what was once there.
Statues were broking, rubble everywhere all over the grounds. It was a storm had rampaged through the temple, and there probably was. But in the form of the Fire Nation.
(Y/N) keeps a strong hold on Aang's trembling hand in her own as they walk through their homes ground, glancing around the chaos that lays before them with each step. Sokka kept a watchful eye on the girl, while he walked quietly beside Katara, both following the two up front.
Sokka spotted something near some of the brushes that were brown at the tips, and picked up the Fire Nation helmet from off the ground. His expression was a sad one for the two with them, as they watched him touch that from a few steps away.
She dropped Aang's hand for a few seconds as they make their way into the main temple, where she was first told she was the Avatar. They went across the long pathway that lead to it, once more in silence to respect the fallen.
Aang lingers a bit behind her with tears in his eyes, standing a few meters in front of the siblings as they all quietly observed the girl whom was looking around the room.
The entire temple was in shambles, nothing left in one piece that she could see. She didn't know if she was ready or not to see what was actually inside.
Her heart was in her throat when she walked more inside of it, to the exact spot where she once stood with her master. The last time they ever spoke to each other.
A massive gaping hole was in the side of the temple, setting her blood on fire from how much damage the Fire Nation actually did to her and Aang's home while they weren't there to save it. However, what really came next was something that she wished she'd never had to see for as long as she lived.
"Gyasto.." (Y/N)'s voice was small, like a child's one staring at the skeleton corpse, the soulless eyes looking right back up into her wide eyes. Her bottom lip trembled horrible, seeing what had become of her friend, her master, her father.
And she knew it was her once kind and loving father, as he wore the same round necklace as he did when he was live, that supports the symbol of airbending. There was no denying the truth, when it stared right back at her.
Her breathing picks up into a heavy pattern, the tears she desperately wanted to keep at bay now falling freely down her cheeks in salty waves. A harsh sob left her which alerted the others, and had Aang coming up to see what was wrong, Sokka and Katara close behind.
She didn't even hear her friends coming up to her, as all she heard was Gyasto's voice echoing through her mind, and her last memory she ever had of him, before everything went downhill for them both.
"Now, this would be a huge burden for anyone," He placed a gentle hand onto her shoulder, and directed her watery gaze to his, "but you're not just anyone, (Y/N). You're strong and kindhearted and selfless. Remember that. Always remember who you are."
Her face scrunched up painfully as more cries escaped her for the lose of the only father figure she's ever had, gritting her teeth in wrath as a sudden overwhelming feeling of sadness, and rage washed over her into one emotion that she couldn't control.
They murdered Gyasto. They killed her and Aang's people, the only ones who took her in without even questing where she was born or who she was. They probably killed every poor and innocent air-animal that once roomed the temple's grounds, and they would have killed Aang too, if he never did join her on that journey through the storm.
And like always, the Fire Nation got away with it because she wasn't here to stop it. Wasn't there to protect her family when they needed the Avatar the most.
Suddenly, a familiar mystical whirring sound echoed around the temple, as the tattoo on (Y/N)'s head began to glow a florescence colour. Her hand marks on her knuckles followed next, along with her eyes as they were now glowing the same colour, a heavy glare on her face as she entered the Avatar state.
Her boots began to leave the ground below, as rumbling began to occur that shook the other three off balance, and the wind began to pick up also. Aang latched onto the siblings beside him, his teary eyes widening at the sight of his best friend, "(Y/N)!"
The air whooshes around her figure starting to levitate off the floor, as a whirlwind began to form around her, leaves, sticks and dust being picked up from how strong it was.
"What is happening? What is she doing?" Sokka exclaimed worriedly over the loud wind inside the temple, keeping a tight grip on the two younger ones beside him as they all watched her figure continuing to levitate up in the air.
It was getting so severe that Sokka had no choice but to bring Aang and Katara outside away from the girl, despite them all wanting to stay and help, as Aang continued to cry out his sister name, "(Y/N)! Snap out of it!"
Her eyes and tattoos gloved brightly, clothes fluttering heavily in the wind that picked up even more now, the bending being influenced by her raging emotions. Rocks were flying everywhere, as the air sphere around the girl expanded and she shot out of the temple, inside of the wind storm.
The roof exploded by the force of the tornado as her arms snap down to make it stronger, and debris was catapulting in the air, which landed in the storm or on the ground. The trio trying to get through to her, were sent back because of the wind force, despite Aang trying to stop the air with his bending, but was no match.
(Y/N) was inside the raging tornado, her face covered in tears that were still running down her face despite the angry scowl across her features. She heard Sokka's voice calling to her next, but shut it out to instead focus on Gyasto's, the one whom died protecting their home because she wasn't there to save it.
"(Y/N)." Her fathers smiling face came into her view, eyes holding warmth and tone was filled with the upmost pride, "I can't imagine a better person to have been given this power."
Her face scrunched up with a pained sob leaving her lips, her eyes and tattoos glowing brighter as well as the windstorm circling her. Her hair flies in the wind, as more of the memories she had of him past through her mind.
"You are my friend." He reassured giving her hands a squeeze, a fond look in his eyes staring at the girl whom he watched grow up, "And you... will always be the daughter that I wish I had."
At his words that continued to echo in her mind, her once raged face softened into a calmer one realising that he may be gone, but he still lived on forever through her memories no matter how far apart they were now. And there was no use dwelling on the past, when she had three family members currently in need of her help from the storm she created, and all the other citizens in need of the Avatar's help.
The wind died down now slowly as she lowered herself to the ground, and the three watched from their spots behind a rock. All the rubble that was inside the storm dropped too, as (Y/N)'s eyes and tattoos were glowing still as she lands onto the ground, her knees touching it first as she drops tiredly.
The others quickly made their way over to her seeing she was out of the Avatar state, while Katara and Sokka stood behind Aang, as he was fast to engulf his best friend into a hug, pulling her down with him, arms wrapping around her.
And when he did, the glowing began to fade away from her, revealing the girls (E/C) eyes that were sad, and red from the crying she had done. She weeps into his shoulder, arms around his back tightly as Aang does the same into hers, both of them clinging onto each other knowing they were all the other had now. The last two airbenders.
They felt another pair of arms wrap around them both, having a feeling it was Katara from the warm touch she sent the both of them, and rested the side of her head against (Y/N)'s. While they hugged, she left her head up a little to glance at Sokka with teary eyes, and saw him looking sympathetic also, but wore a reassuring smile when he met her gaze.

AFTER GETTING MORE SUPPLIES AND WAITING FOR THE GIRL TO CALM DOWM FROM HER EMOTIONL STATE, THE FOUR WERE NOW SAT IN THE COURT YARD OF THE TEMPLE TALKING AMOUNG EACH OTHER. Sokka sat next to (Y/N) on a rock while Aang sat on her other side, and Katara stood up beside her brother, all staring at the Avatar girl waiting for her to speak.
"So not to be rude, but what was that?" Sokka was the first to speak up, his voice and gaze gentle on the girl in question who was moving her knee up and down out of anxiety, making him place his palm on it briefly to relax her.
"I don't know. There's so much I don't know." She exhaled heavily through her nose, calming a bit at his touch on her clothed knee as she fiddled with her fathers necklace, "The monks are gone, and me and Aang are all alone."
Aang bit his bottom lip trying not to cry again at that fact, and reached over to grab her hand tightly in his, squeezing it to comfort them both. She gave one back to him, sending her own strength to him through the hold. They would be alright, as long as they had each other.
"You know, the thing about losing everything," Katara knelt down in front of the pair, looking between them softly before her gaze stopped on the other girls sad face, "is that that's when you learn how strong you really are. It's when you learn to fight."
Her (E/C) eyes followed Katara when she stood back up, before they flickered over to Aang and Sokka last, "They made the ultimate sacrifice for me. I need to make sure their deaths weren't in vain." She began to talk in a stronger voice then before, rubbing her thumb over Gyasto's necklace in her hands, "I need to follow through on what they wanted me to do. Complete my training and master all the other elements so I can bring balance back to the world."
"Oh, is that all?" Sokka sarcastically muttered to himself with a grumble, agreeing with (Y/N) that she should but the idea of her putting herself in danger to save the world didn't sit right with him. And at his comment, Karata whacked the side of his shoulder in warning, making him gasp a bit offended.
She hid an amused smile hearing his words, and instead squeezed Aang's hand in hers even tighter, speaking once more to them all, "This was our home, and now it's gone. It's only after we've lost something that we realize how much it means to us.. and how we'd do anything to get it back. Anything."
The three shared small smiles at her growing determination and confidence now, and she continued to talk on, "I don't know where this will all lead, and I don't know if I have what it takes, but the one thing I do know is,"
(Y/N) stood up to grab her staff in both hand when she dropped Aang's for a moment, and gripped it tightly in her marked hands, as her eyes scan over her new team to help he save the world, "I'm the Avatar, and this is just the beginning."
The three all smiled at her widely, thinking the same thing that they were proud of her for finally accepting who she was and what she would have to do. Sokka's face was a soft expression on the girl, watching her get hugged by Aang tightly and Katara, her in the middle as they all laughed together happily.
When they eventually pulled apart from the comforting embrace, she patted down her sides to feel for the diary she took from Zuko. Her hand bumped against it causing her to smirk a bit, and pull it out from under her soft belt, flipping to the pages where she saw the eartbender Avatar while the others watched curiously.
"Kyoshi Island is only a few hours from here. According to this, Avatar Kyoshi was the fiercest of warriors," She began to explain holding up the page of the island, and showed the three what was on it smiling, "and a master of what they call the Avatar state. Maybe something in her shrine will help me control my power before it happens again."
Sokka ran a hand down his face stressed after listening to her words, watching (Y/N) walk off a little away from them reading more to Aang about Avatar Kyoshi. He didn't know what to do now, to stay with her and help her with this quest, or go back to his tribe where he first thought would happen. But things were different now, for some reason he couldn't place.
However he still didn't let those thoughts invade his judgement, and walked over to his sister with a serious expression, "I think it's time to go home." He starts off in a lowered voice confusing Katara who frowned, "We did our part. We saved her from the firebenders. Now its time to go home. My duty.."
Katara gave him a sharp and unimpressed look to what he said, making him sigh through his nose and correct himself so he wouldn't get yelled at, "Our duty is to protect the village, like Dad told us to."
"They can protect themselves. Besides, what good is saving Wolf Cove we don't save the world?" She pointed out knowingly with a small smile at her brother, her eyes flickering over to (Y/N) sitting on a rock still with Aang, their conversation a bit louder then the siblings ones from the laugher.
"Katara, do you hear what you're saving? Save the world." Sokka repeated incredulously with wide eyes, waving his arms in the air a bit dramatic to get his argument across to his stubborn younger sibling, "Us? That's crazy, you're turning crazy like sky girl!"
Her brows raised a bit when he mentioned (Y/N) even though they weren't taking about her, and pushed a finger into Sokka's chest, "If the world is gonna have any chance, it's gonna need (Y/N). Your so called 'sky girl'. And you're right. We do have a duty, and it's too protect the Avatar along with Aang."
His dark eyes flickered over to the said girl still sat on a rock a few meters away from them, feeling that same tug in his heart he felt when she saved him for the first time, "Protect her? You wanna protect her?" His tone was now a sneer, his mind going back to the events before even though deep down he knew she didn't mean for it to happen, "The girl who nearly blew us off the top of this mountain."
"It's about more than just helping (Y/N). Ever since they both came into our lives, things changed for me." She began to level with her also stubborn brother who furrowed his brows confused, "Before I met her, I couldn't bend enough water to fill a thimble. And now look what I can do! And that's after a single day! Look around."
Katara motioned to the environment around them of the destroyed air temple with her hands, "Look where we are now. I don't know about you but I can't go back." Her voice dropped into a softer one seeing the conflicted look in Sokka's eyes, "And I know you've felt a connection, or something along those lines with (Y/N). I saw it the moment you caught her from that iceberg."
His face twisted up a bit realising his sister was more observant then he was, and exhaled heavily through his mouth as he glanced down, pondering on what Katara said about them. Katara smiled to herself in triumph a bit knowing she got her brother to think, and turned around to walk back to the two best friends waiting for them.
Back over where the airbenders were giggling with one another, a sudden soft grunting noise comes from a brown bag on the floor, as it wiggle around a bit. The duo paused hearing that sound, and shared a baffled look with another, as they stood up from their perched position.
(Y/N) wrapped her fathers necklace around her neck for now, gripping the bracelet on her wrist out of nerves, and stood before the moving bag beside Aang, "Katara, I think there's something wrong with your bag..." She called out gaining the siblings attention.
Katara and Sokka both came running around to where the two were, her head tilting to the side lost as to what was happening to her bag. When the other girl tried to touch the material, Sokka stepped forward out of instinct, panic lacing his tone, "Should you really be touching that-?"
She looked up through her (H/C) locks hanging off her forehead, a slow smirk forming across her lips as she squats down to the bag, "You worried about me now, water boy?" She teased in a coo, causing the other two to snort a bit and Sokka to stutter, his cheeks becoming a red hue a little.
The girl just snickered to herself at his reaction, loving how she already had an effect on him with her teasing. She goes to reach for Katara's bag, but something inside it screeches and moved away quickly, causing the four to exclaim in alarm.
She scrambled to stand up straight trying to catch the fleeing bag, Aang right behind her chasing it along the ground. The bag went around a corner but was stopped by Katara, who grabbed it and shook it upside down, making everything fall out of it which included the thing making it move.
A winged lemur was laying on the floor munching on the bread in Katara's bag, the creature that was making her bag move. Sokka's angry voice flitters through the air seeing the animals eating their food, "Hey! That's our food!" He stomped up beside his sister, making the lemur drop the food and fly up onto a tree branch.
(Y/N) and Aang shared a wide eyed, happy look with another realising at least one of the air-animals survived the attack. She placed her palms onto her smiling cheeks, and gushes over the cute creature eating some fruit in the tree, "A winged lemur! The sky used to be filled with them."
Aang tugs on his sisters arm excitedly as he began to pull her towards the lemur, "C'mon! Let's go say hello." He chirps through a goofy grin, making her smile fondly at him and they both use their bending to help themselves up onto the tree brunch also with the lemur.
Sokka watched the girl closely as she did this with a worried frown over his forehead, before he turned to his sister who bent down to pick up her things from emptying the bag, "What's this?" She mumbled in question, picking up a blue scroll that was tied together by a small piece of rope.
She stood up holding the scroll in her hands, and slowly began to unroll it, her face changing into an amazed one as she read what her grandmother had left for her. It was a waterbending scroll that was past down through generations, and now she was the one to have it.
Many moves of the waterbending style was on the old, wrinkled paper as her eyes gaze over the entire thing, excitement and confidence pumping through her veins now that she had her hands on this training. She could now become a better bender, thanks to her grandmother and the scroll.
"See? This never would've happened if we hadn't left home." Katara tells her brother showing him the paper in her hands, a wide smile across her face as she holds it close to her chest, very impatient to start her training to become the greatest waterbender and hopefully get to teach (Y/N) it.
Sokka rolled his eyes annoyed, but once more knew deep down he already agreed to help the Avatar along her journey, and most importantly his sister, "Fine. We'll go to Kyoshi Island and see how it goes." He grumbles finally giving in, causing Katara to grin slyly at him and for him to look away quickly already sensing what she was thinking.
"(Y/N), Aang, you guys ready to leave?" Katara calls out to the best friends sat on the tree brunch, watching amused as the other girl had the lemur on her head and was patting it gently causing him to make cooing noises, before he hopped down to sit in between them eating a fruit.
She hummed in acknowledgement hearing Katara's words, her gaze drifting down to the necklace around her neck and reached up to touch it softly, "Almost. There's something I have to do first." She answered quietly, looking to Aang for reassurance to see him nodding along smiling.
And so they processed to make a grave for Gyasto in honor of his memory, and his death. After it was completely made with piles of rocks on some dug up dirt that was covered, (Y/N) bent down to gently place down his necklace around the rocks, a few tears already dripping down her cheeks.
She stood back up beside Aang who slipped his hand into her, and squeezed tightly, as he too tried to hold in his tears for their master. Katara and Sokka were standing behind the airbenders, staying quiet to show their respect also as the males sad eyes were on (Y/N)'s figure, whose back was to him.
"From the moment you found me hiding away in the bison's sleeping pen when I was only little, you were there for me.." She began to talk in a teary tone, bottom lip wobbly a bit staring down at her fathers grave, Aang's hand being her only source of reassurance, "but I wasn't there for you. There's not enough words to explain how grateful I am, how thankful I am that you found me and took me in when I had nowhere else to go."
More tears drop down her cheeks from her fluttering lashes, a choked sob leaving her lips again as she looked straight ahead over his grave, "Goodbye, Gyasto. I'm sorry I couldn't save you like you saved me." She finished off in a whisper, sniffles leaving her as she dropped Aang's hand and turned away from the grave, leaving her home behind forever this time.
