greenie
Then we heard the noise of the box. I wiped the sweat off my forehead before following everyone else over to the hole.
Gally and Newt opened the door. Inside, like always, was a boy. He had jet black hair and was wearing a blue shirt with light brown trousers. He looked at us like we were crazy. Gally jumped in and helped him up.
"Day one, greenie. Rise and shine."
The boy didn't say anything. He just circled around looking at the vine covered walls. Then he saw the gap and ran for it.
"WE GOTTA RUNNER!" The others shouted.
I sighed before running after the boy. He was fast, but I was faster. I was at his heels in no time. I went to grab him but he fell over before I could and landed on the floor with a grunt. I grabbed his arms behind his back and whispered in his ear.
"Don't do that again, okay?"
"Yes." He struggled.
I let him go and he stood up and started to spin in circles again. The boys started clapping and cheering but I could tell he zoned them out.
"Come with me, greenie." Gally grabbed his arm and threw him in the slammer roughly before walking off.
I knelt down to look at him while Alby walked over.
"Hey." He said patting my back. I nodded in response. The greenie scurried away until his back hit the stone wall.
"Hey there, Green Bean. You're not gonna run again, okay?"
The boy nodded.
"Good." I chuckled and Alby opened it so he could get out but he stayed in.
"My name is Alby. This is y/n." He pointed at me. "Can you tell me anything about yourself? Who you are, where you came from?"
"Anything at all?" I tilted my head.
"N-no.." he said extremely stressed.
"Can you tell me your name?" Alby asked.
"No." He began to shake. "I- uh- I can't remember anything. Why cant I remember anything?"
"It's okay." I smiled reassuringly but he started to pant, "Hey, relax. Relax. It's normal." The greenie looks up at me, "It happens to us all."
"You'll get your name back in a day or two." Alby added. "It's the one thing they let us keep."
There was a few seconds of silence until the greenie spoke up with a shaky voice.
"What is this place?"
I stood up so Alby could help him out.
"Let me show you."
"Hey, Alby. I'm going to go see Chuck and Newt." I ran off not letting him reply.
"Hey, y/n! I made this for you!" Chuck exclaimed as I ran into the homestead and he handed me a knife.
It was beautiful. On the handle flowers were carved into it. It wasn't very big but I could keep it hidden in my pocket.
"Oh my god! Thank you so much Chuck! I love it!" I pulled him into a hug and ruffled his hair.
"Y/n.." someone covered my eyes, "guess who it is."
I could tell by their hands that it was Gally.
"Erm I don't know a griever?" I laughed and turned around.
"Very funny." He pulled me in by the waist and kissed me but I pushed him away and he frowned.
We had been arguing a lot lately. Over stupid things for no reason. I couldn't lie, I was still mad.
Chuck fake coughed and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. I was about to tell him to leave until someone else stood beside him.
"Chuck, Alby wants you to introduce you to the new greenie. You'll be helping him with his hammock." Newt patted his back as he ran off. "What are you two love birds doing?"
"Erm.. nothing. Bye." I waved to them and walked off to talk to Alby and the greenie again.
They were up in the watch-tower looking out at the glade.
"Hello boysss." I greeted them before resting on the wooden rail.
"Hi. Are you the only girl? I haven't seen any others." The greenie asked.
"Yup."
"What's out there?" He motioned towards the maze doors.
"We only have 4 rules. First, do your part. No time for freeloaders. Second, never harm another Glader." Alby looked at me as he said it because he knew what I was thinking about.
"And most importantly never go beyond those walls. Oh, and also you can't hurt y/n. She's the only girl here so we must protect her, Gally's rule."
I chuckled, "you say that like I can't protect myself."
"HEY ALBY!" A shout was heard from below us and we peered over to see Chuck holding things in his arms.
"Hey, Chuck. Help the greenie out with his hammock please!"
-
I was sat against a tree when I saw the greenie walking towards the walls and Chuck running behind him. I came up beside them.
"Dude, where are you going?" I asked.
"I just wanna see."
"You can look around all you want, but you better not go out there."
"Why not? What's out there?"
"You ask so many questions." I rolled my eyes before stopping him in his tracks.
"I don't know what's out there." Chuck answered for me. "I just know what I'm told. And we're not supposed to leave."
"Chucks right."
"Do you know what's out there?" Greenie glanced at me.
I was about to answer until Minho and Ben ran threw the doors. I hopped over to them and hugged Ben. We were practically brother and sister, it was nice.
"Hey Min Min." I smirked.
"Hey y/n." He gave me sarcastic smile.
I walked back to Chuck as they ran past.
"Hey Chuck. How does it feel to be promoted." Ben chuckled.
"Feels great, Ben." Chuck gave him a quick thumbs up.
"I thought no one was allowed to leave."
"I said we're not allowed to leave. They're different."
"We are runners. We know more about the maze than anyone." I butted in.
"You go out there? You're a runner? And what maze?"
"Yep, I'm a runner." I ignored his last question so he walked closer to the opening in the walls. "Where are you going?" We ran up to him.
"I'm just gonna talk a look..."
"You can't. No one leaves. Especially not now." Chuck told him. "It's not safe."
"Okay, I'm not gonna go." He said that but kept walking forward and I pinched the bridge of my nose.
"HEY!" I heard a shout and looked up to see Gally pushing the greenie away. He flung back onto the floor grunting. Gally walked over to the boy on the floor and looked down. "We gotta stop meeting like this, greenie."
Green bean shoved him out the way and stood up angrily.
"Okay. Calm calm calm." I said holding my arms out in front of me like I was dealing with a dog. The other gladers ran over and surrounded us.
"Hey! What the hell is wrong with you guys?" The greenie shouted.
"Just calm down, alright?" Newt ran over next to me.
"No. Why won't you tell me what's out there!"
"Just trying to protect you man." Alby spoke.
"For your own good." I added.
"You can't keep me here!"
"We can't let you leave."
"Why not?"
The walls begin to rumble and shift. The maze was changing. Everyone fell into a silence and stared into the opening. A gust of wind came flying through which blew leaves in our faces so we held our arms up. The greenie just stared like he was in a trance.
"What the hell?" He mumbled.
Then the doors began to close in-front of him and he stumbled back in shock.
"Next time, I'm gonna let you leave." Gally spat before walking off with us all following.
