another one
I leaned on one of the beams next to Gally in front of all the gladers. They all eventually quietened down and Gally began.
"Things are changing. There's no denying that. First Ben gets stung in broad daylight and then Alby. And now our greenie here has taken it upon himself to go into the maze. Which is a clear violation of our rules here."
"Yeah, but he saved Alby's life." Frypan spoke up from behind Newt.
"Did he?" Gally raised his eyebrows. There was silence so he carried on. "For three years, we have co-existed with these things and now you've killed one of them." He pointed to Thomas behind him.
"Gally, so did I. We both did the same amount of killing." I said but he ignored me.
"Well, what do you suggest we do?" Newt asked.
"He has to be punished."
There was bickering and shouts from within the crowd and I rolled my eyes, annoyed.
"Minho, y/n. You were there with him. What do you think?" Newt asked us and the gladers fell quiet again.
"I think he was brave. He did what he had to do to survive." I shrugged and looked behind me at Minho, waiting for his answer.
He sighed, "I think in all the time we've been here no ones ever killed a griever before and now there's been two killed in less that twenty four hours. When I turned tail and ran, these dumb shanks stood behind to help Alby." Minho gestured mainly at Thomas but glanced at me. "Look, I don't know if he's brave or stupid. But whatever it is, we need more of it. I say we make him a runner."
I smirked and held my hand up and Minho highfived me. A smile grew on Newts face as he straightened up. Some of the gladers cheered others didn't.
"If you wanna throw the newbie a parade, that's fine." Gally shouted. "Go ahead. But if there's one thing that I know about the maze, it is that you do not-"
He was cut off when the familiar sound of the box was heard. He immediately looked at me, confused and I just shrugged. Newt and I stood up off our beams before running outside with everyone following. I jogged in front of them all and reached the square hole in the ground first. Gally and Newt stopped either side of me before opening the doors to the box.
Newt jumped in and everyone fired questions but he shushed them when he looked up.
"It's a girl." He said, practically whispering.
"Oh! Thank shuck!" I celebrated and everyone looked at me. "Sorry, please continue."
Thomas shoved his way through to stand in Newt's spot beside me.
"I think she's dead." Newt announced.
"What's in her hand?" I asked.
Newt gently took the item out of her hand and opened it up. It was a bit of paper. I couldn't make out the writing from where I was.
"She's the last one, ever." He read. "What the hell does that mean?"
The girl gasped and lifted her head up. She had black hair and was wearing white with a blue under shirt. There was something familiar about her but I couldn't pin it.
"Thomas.." she panted before slowly falling unconscious again.
We all looked at the boy next to me. Thomas seemed just as confused as us all.
"You still think I'm overreacting?" Gally asked.
Clint and Jeff took her into the med-jack in the room next to Alby's. I followed Newt, Minho and Thomas in. The greenie paused when he saw Alby tied to the bed. I refused to look and just pushed him ahead.
"Jeff. What's going on?" I asked.
"What's the matter with her? Why won't she wake up?" Newt questioned.
"Hey, guys. I got my job the same way you did." Jeff shrugged.
The room fell silent and we stared down at the unconscious girl in front of us.
"Well, do you recognise her?" Newt said to Thomas.
"No."
"Really? Because she seemed to recognise you."
"I recognise her." I spoke.
"Huh?"
"From a dream." I didn't take my eyes off the girl.
"Well, that's just so bloody useful." Newt said sarcastically.
"What about the note?" Thomas asked.
"Yeah, we'll worry about the note later."
"I think you should worry about it now." Thomas looked between us.
"We've got enough to deal with at the moment."
Jeff spoke, "He's right, Newt. If the box isn't coming back up, how long do you think we can last?"
"No one said that." I said trying to lift their mood. "Let's not jump to conclusions. We'll just- we'll just wait until she wakes up and see what she knows."
Newt nodded, "Y/n's right. Somebody's gotta have some answers around here."
Thomas mumbled something before walking out to leave.
"And where are you going?" Newt and I asked.
"Back into the maze." Thomas stated.
"That dumb shank." I chuckled before following Minho outside.
I left the two boys to have a chat and hopefully Minho would bring Thomas to his senses. I decided to go talk to Gally. He was stood with some of his friends near the forest when I walked over.
"Hey, baby." He smiled before turning to his friends. "Scram." He ordered and they walked away. "I missed you." He pulled my head into his chest.
"Gall, it was only one night." I laughed. "I'm fine."
"I know. I know. Newt kept reminding me that you can handle yourself."
"And I can. Newt knows me better than anyone else, other than you." I pulled away from the hug and placed my arms around his neck and his hands went onto my hips.
Gally went to open his mouth but he was cut off by a shout.
"Y/N! Get your ass into the hut, now!" It was Minho.
Gally sighed when I turned back to him.
"Bye." I pecked his lips and began to walk away.
"I love you." He called.
I turned around, still walking, and blew him a kiss which caused him to blush.
Thomas was resting on the wall outside. When I entered the room, Minho, Frypan, Zart and Winston were stood around the table.
"Finally." Minho rolled his eyes.
"Shut up, Min Min. What are we here for?" I stood next to Fry.
"Thomas wants us to go back into the maze and examine the grievers body." Minho straightened up.
"Which one?"
"The one stuck in between the walls."
"Okay. So what are we waiting for? Let's go."
"Y/n, are you sure? I don't think it's a smart idea." Zart butted in.
"Then why are you here?"
"I-I- uh- because I volunteered."
"Right, okay. So what's up?" I raised an eyebrow.
"I- Don't-"
"He means it's dangerous." Winston cut him off.
"Well, it is. But the maze is always dangerous. We should take a vote as seen as some of us are unsure." I looked around at the boys. "All those in favour for going back into the maze raise your hand."
I raised mine. Minho, Fry and Winston did as well. Zart looked at the floor nervously.
"Well, that's settled. Zart, you don't have to come. You can stay here." I smiled.
"No, no. It's fine. I'll come." He nodded and stood up tall.
"Great." Minho patted his back.
We walked out. Me in front and the boys behind me in a line. Thomas stood up straight to hear what we had to say.
"Will this be enough?" Minho dug his hands in his pockets.
Thomas nodded slowly, "Okay. Let's go."
I didn't bother telling Gally we were going back in. He'd only get angry and would find out his own way. Minho and Thomas jogged in front while Zart and Winston were behind them, leaving me and Fry at the very back.
I told them the instructions to where we were going as we ran. In a matter of minutes we arrived. Grievers legs stuck out of the wall and there was organs surrounding the metal monster.
"That's disgusting." Zart was the first to speak.
"Tell me about it." I grimaced and leaned closer, "Hey, there's something in there."
"You mean besides a griever pancake?" Fry took a step back.
"Yes, Fry, besides a griever pancake." I pointed at what I saw. It was a flashing red light.
I awaited for the boys to take it but none of the did so I took the job upon my self. I stepped over the stickiness.
"Who, whoa, whoa, what are you doing?" Winston asked.
"What does it look like? I'm getting whatever it is, out." I shoved my arm into the gap of the wall.
They all moved closer, just as interested as me. Before I could pull anything out one of the legs moved and Fry pulled me back.
"I thought you said it was dead." He let go of me.
"Was it a reflex?" Zart questioned.
"You hope." Winston retorted.
"All right, let's try pull it out." Thomas suggested and grabbed ahold of the leg. The boys followed his lead and helped him. I just stood with my fingers pinching my nose as I heard them struggle.
"Do you need my help-" I stepped forward but was cut off when the leg fell to the floor, along with the boys. I couldn't help but laugh as they scrambled up.
I calmed myself down and grabbed the object that had the red flashing light on. It was a metal cylinder wrapped in a cocoon of griever flesh. I gagged before pulled the tube out, dropping the goop to the floor. The boys groaned and I ran at Fry, waving my hand in his face.
"Y/n, stop! Girl, you better stop!" He yelled as I chased after him.
"Y/n!" Minho caught my attention and I turned back to the group. "What is it?"
I hadn't looked probably at the thing in my hand until now. It was like some sort of plug. There was the number '7' on a small square screen and a sticker was under nearth, reading:
W|C|K|D
I mentally groaned as I remembered my nightmares and all the dumb talk of Wicked. Minho broke my out of my thoughts when he grabbed the device from my hands to inspect it himself.
"Interesting." He stated.
"Okay, whatever it is, can we take this up back at the glade?" Fry asked frantically. "Because I don't wanna meet this guys friends."
I nodded in agreement. "He's right. It's getting late. Come on." I took lead, Zart took his pole and they all followed me back.
