prologue
HIS blue eyes were familiar to her. Very familiar. In the jumble of her head, a million thoughts that hit her like waterfalls, or a dam crashing━sentences, phrases, faces, names━the one thing that she was sure of, was his blue eyes. She's never seen eyes so blue. They were like gemstones, or clear blue oceans ... oceans, why does she know something regarding oceans? She frowned to herself, not realising she had stood up before a hand clasped her elbow gently.
"Clara?" asked Leith, concerned.
"First Law of Thermodynamics..." she whispered, eyes wide. She remembered that. She remembered a sentence━that had something to do with the ocean. "No energy in the universe is created ..." someone was supposed to say something else. Who. Blue eyes, ocean. Who? "Give something new life ... I ..." she turned to her brother, clasping his sleeve. "I could become a moon, or━or a fish."
He arched a brow at her, watching her leave him and shuffle back to her chair, very confused. "I have no idea what she's going on about. Fitz?"
The one with the blue eyes━the one that knew her story turned around. Fitz. Her eyes widened and she snapped her fingers at him. He watched her, like he was on the tips of his toes, wanting an answer. What answer? "Monkey," she told him. "There's a monkey ... I think, somewhere." She sighed and shook her head. Hands flying to her temples, she tried to make sense of it all. "Why would there be a monkey? That makes no sense, that's not the First Law of Thermodynamics."
The man sighed, if not a little tearful. Blue eyes ... she knew someone else with blue eyes. Pretty blue eyes. Gorgeous blue eyes. Blue eyes like his eyes. Like the ocean. What does a monkey have to do with blue eyes and the ocean?
She tugged at her hair in her frustration.
"Clara," she heard him say gently. "Clara, look at me ... you're all right ..."
She turned around and locked gaze with blue eyes. Clara frowned, head titled. She knew that look; she knew his face. He knew her, and she knew him━but where? Where? He looked at her like she was beautiful, one of the brightest stars in the universe, a shocking and gorgeous discovery ... her heart leapt. She was so enamoured, she didn't stop him when he set his hands on her shoulders and slid down to her arms, giving them a rub.
"I need to you to take a breath," he murmured, voice a little shaky. "You have to take a breath. Remember your favourite star? The constellation━"
"Lyra," she knew that. Why is her heart clenching? Why is she scared?━She needs something ... she's missing something. "Lyra..."
"Y━yeah," he said. "Focus on that, remember? Keep focusing on that. That's where we went in our story."
She glanced at him, startled. "We have a story?"
He smiled at her. She liked that smile. "Yeah, we do. Stuck together, the whole time━"
Something in her chest lurched. "Whole time..." blue eyes. Blue eyes behind glass. Tearful, like they are now. A face━blue eyes, curly hair. Young. Younger than now. But the same. She knew him! She knew him!
You've been beside me the whole damn time!
Clara remembered a feeling of stress, and fear, and being hot and cold and desperate. But she also remembered hope. Hope from him. Him with his lovely blue eyes. "You were there ..." she murmured, trying to think. Her thoughts were slowly, very slowly coming together, but they were scrambled like eggs in a fry pan. What if she never got them back? "Aliens, a━and a helmet and ... and you were there. You broke the rules..." her eyes shot back to his, and they were light with hope. "The whole time━you were with me the whole time. Where we went, you were there."
"Yeah," he breathed, "Yeah, I was..."
"Fitz..." the name slipped out of her lips before she could think.
She knew she was right━of course she was right. The smile he gave her, that was Fitz's smile. Her Fitz. Fitz was back. "Yeah," said Fitz, relieved. He rubbed her arms again, eyes tearful like hers. "Yeah, Clara..."
But she was still very confused. Fitz was here ... but what then? "That doesn't make sense though ..." she slumped. "What does that have to do with Lyra? Why were we there? Why? What happened? That doesn't make sense ... I ... I don't ..." the smile fell from his face and she turned away.
Stepping back, Fitz watched Clara move back to Jemma wringing her hands.
Daisy's brows lifted. She glanced at Mack. "She's remembering that she knows him━just not that she loves him."
Fitz turned to her, shaking his head. Behind them, Clara was twisting her hands and muttering, "That doesn't make sense ... why would we spend all that time? It doesn't make sense..."
"No, no, no," he said miserably, walking up to them. "She's forgotten something far more important than that..."
