"ARE YOU A ZOMBIE? BECAUSE YOU'RE DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS," Freddy complimented, and Wendy rolled her eyes at her brother's awful attempt at flirting. He and the blonde girl were walking side by side while Dani walked behind them with Wendy and Max taking up the rear.
Allison was leading them to the old Sanderson house, and she still had a key from when her mom ran the museum that they had opened there. It was full of old artifacts that supposedly belonged to the witch sisters that lived there. Dani looked back to Wendy after Freddy spoke. "Man, your brother is almost as weird as mine."
"Dani!" Max scolded, not wanting his potential friends to think that he was weird.
Wendy grinned in amusement. He really needed to stop caring so much about what people thought, especially Allison. He would be doing a lot better if he would just be himself. She explained to the girl. "They're brothers. They're supposed to be weird. It's all they're good for."
"So does Freddy, like, like Allison?" the Dennison boy asked after a moment, trying to shift the subject away from how weird he was when he was trying to get the people around him to like him.
"Well, he's only been in love with her since Kindergarten. You've got some competition, Max," she informed him before chuckling as Freddy said yet another stupi\d line to the Watts girl. She seemed to be kind of enjoying them, though, which was really odd. "Although, he seems to be striking out with those pickup lines."
Max nodded and looked down at his feet. "Oh."
"But if she's the 'girl of your dreams,' you better fight for it," the brunette girl teased, causing Dani to giggle slightly, happy that she had heard that whole conversation at the party so that they could tease Max about it.
His face turned red and he rubbed the back of his neck nervously as he checked to make sure that the blonde girl in the front had not heard that because it was kind of embarrassing for him. Wendy thought it was kind of cute, but it was a little stalkery. "You heard that?"
"The whole party heard that," she joked. The siblings had been talking pretty for something that they did not want everyone to know about, especially since the two Addams kids had been standing less than three feet away from them.
"That's great," he breathed out sarcastically. "I mean, maybe she's not the girl of my dreams. Maybe there's someone else out there for me." He turned to Wendy with a weird look in his eye, and when she realized what was happening, she started laughing. "What's so funny?"
She shook her head in disbelief, continuing to chuckle. There was no way that he was talking about Allison being the girl of his dreams and then ten minutes later, flirting with her best friend. "You are not hitting on me right now."
"What? No. I wasn'tโ" he scoffed, shaking his head aggressively, and Wendy laughed because she liked watching him squirm.
He rushed to defend himself while she tsked scoldingly. Dani giggled at the sight of her brother trying to explain why he had just tried to flirt with his crush's best friend. She sighed playfully, "Pick a girl, Max."
"That's not what I wasโ" he stammered out, and Allison and Freddy looked back at them in confusion, wondering what was causing so much noise back there since both of the girls were laughing really hard, and Max was yelling.
Wendy patted him on the shoulder reassuringly, letting him know that he could calm down. "Relax."
"Legend has it that the bones of a hundred children were buried within these walls," Allison informed them as they walked up the walkway and toward the house. It was completely dark since no one had step foot in it for a while. It was sacred ground in Salem, so the town did not want to tear it down. So, they just left it there.
"Oh, great," Dani commented sarcastically. The Watts girl opened the door, and they all stepped inside, immediately engulfed by the darkness of the house. It was a little creepy since Wendy had no clue when she was going to run into a cobweb. "I can't see a thing."
The older blonde sighed, feeling around the walls for the light switch. Wendy would be shocked if there was any power in the house since there was no one occupying it to pay the bills. "Well, there's a light switch around here somewhere."
"Found a lighter," Max told them, and began lighting a bunch of candles and the fire to give them some sort of light. It was still pretty dim in the room, but it was as good as they were going to get.
As the room was illuminated, light fell onto an old and rotten pumpkin, and that apparently reminded Freddy of his love for Allison because he smirked at her and said, "Call me a jack-o'-lantern because something inside me lights up when I see you."
"Nice one, Fred," his sister chuckled out as her best friend blushed a little bit at his comment.
Allison gestured around the room, pointing out different things that she remembered from when her mom worked there. "Here's the original cauldron. And upstairs is where they slept. Oh, and be careful where you step. The floors are old." She walked excitedly over to a glass case that had a big old book in it and read the description at the bottom. "'This is the spell book of Winifred Sanderson. It was given to her by the devil himself. The book is bound in human skin... and contains the recipes for her most powerful and evil spells.''"
"What's that?" Max asked, and he pointed over to where a candle was on display. There were probably a hundred candles in the house, so why was that one so special?
The Watts girl followed his finger with her eyes, and a small smile apeared on her face when she saw that he was pointing at. "Oh. It's the black flame candle."
"Hmm. 'Black flame candle. Made from the fat of a hangman. Legend says that on a full moon it will raise the spirits of the dead... when lit by a virgin on Halloween night,'" he read out from the description next to the candle. He pulled out the lighter once again with a smirk on his face. "Hmm. So let's light the sucker and meet the old broads. Wanna do the honors?"
"No, thanks," Allison answered, shaking her head, so his eyes shifted to the brunette girl.
Wendy shook her head, and she reached over to cover Dani's ears because she really did not need to be hearing that part of the conversation. "I don't think it'll work if I do it."
"Ew! I did not need to know that about you!" Freddy exclaimed, scrunching his face up in disgust. Your twin sister's love life was not something you wanted to know a lot about, and he could not tell if she was joking or not.
"Wellโ" Max started, but he was cut off when something leaped out of the darkness and jumped on him. He immediately started yelling and fell to the ground until the thing released him and he saw that it was just a black cat. "Stupid cat!"
Dani grabbed Allison's and Freddy's hand and started tugging them toward the exit because everything was starting to get a little bit too scary for their liking. "Okay, Max, you've had your fun. It's time to go. Come on, guys."
"Max, she's right. Let's go," the blonde girl agreed, and the four of them started heading toward the door.
The Dennison boy refused to move, though, and he chuckled at the creeped out looks on their faces as he clicked to lighter so that a small flame burst out of it. He held it close to the candle as he said, "Oh, come on. It's just a bunch of hocus pocus."
You wanna know what's not a bunch of hocus pocus?" Freddy asked, and he turned to Allison with a smirk as his sister facepalmed, sensing that another pickup line was coming. "Our connection."
"Max, I'm not kidding this time. It's time to go! Max, no!" Dani shrieked, and all of their eyes widened when the boy just shrugged and lifted the lighter to the wick of the candle so that it caught on fire.
The flame was darker, unlike the rest of the candles, and about three seconds after it was lit, something happened. All of the other candles in the entire room were blown out, one by one, by an invisible force. Even the fire was reduced to a spark. They gasped and stared at each other in fright as the floors began to glow bright green through the cracks. Then, they began to shake. All of the children grabbed onto something to stabilize themselves before they could go falling into the green abyss. Dani was screaming, and Allison was desperately trying to calm her down before she gave herself a heart attack. The shaking stopped just as suddenly as it had started, and the flames returned to all of the candles in the fireplace. Max looked around in confusion as they all glared at him. "What happened?"
"A virgin... lit the candle," his sister groaned, and they all barely had a chance to recover before there was a loud cackling outside, and the door swung open. They all dove behind cauldrons and shelves, scared that they were about to get caught trespassing or something.
Three women stepped through the doorway, all dressed in tacky, old clothing. Two of them had their hair up in a way that seemed to defy gravity, and all of them had an evil grin on their faces. The redheaded one, who seemed to be the leader, cried, "We are home! Oh, sweet revenge! Do you see, sisters? My curse worked perfectly!"
"That's because thou art perfect," the dark haired one informed her, and Wendy was sure that someone was playing a trick on them. There was no way that what she thought was happening was actually happening, right? The freaking Sanderson sisters did not just walk into the room. "I knew I left this cauldron on. Didn't I tell you? Oh, I knew it." "
My lucky rat tail! just where I left it!" the blonde one, Sarah, exclaimed excitedly after reaching into her dress and pulling out something long and flimsy.
"But who lit the black flame candle?" Winifred asked, and she walked over to the case that had her book in it with a mischievous grin. "Wake up. Wake up, sleepyhead. Oh, I've missed you. Did you miss me too? Come on, now, we've got work to do."
Mary walked over to her friend with a small smirk, like she knew something the rest of them didn't. "Winnie. I smell children. It's a little girl. Seven. Maybe eight. And a half."
"Ooh, let us play with her! Come, little children I'll take thee away," Sarah yelled, clapping her hands together. Wendy, who was sitting a couple of feet away from Dani, silently gestured for her to get down more.
Both of them winced when the floor creaked as soon as she moved, and the Addams girl immediately felt bad for telling her to do so. "Come out, my dear. We will not harm thee."
"We love children!" Mary shouted, and as she spoke the last word, she banged her hand loudly on the shelf that Dani was hiding behind. All of the sisters peeked their head over it with smiles.
The little girl, knowing that she had been caught, stood up quickly and tried her hardest to the get the witches to think that she was older than she actually was. "I thought thou would never come, sisters. 'Twas I who brought you back."
"Look at her," Mary giggled, and she stepped around the piece of wood separating them and examined the small child, running her fingers an along her dress. "And she's so well fed, isn't she? Plump. Plump! Shis-ka-baby."
"Tell me, dumpling, what is the year?" Winifred questioned as the h the tee of them led Dani toward a chair in the middle of the room and sat her down in front of the cauldron.
Dani looked at them hesitantly before informing them, "1993."
"Sisters, we have been gone 3OO years," Winifred exclaimed with wide eyes and she looked between the small girl in front of them and her sisters. Wendy could not tell if she was happy or upset by the news, and she did not want to pop out to ask her. She glanced over to Max who seemed to be working out a plan to get his sister out of there.
Mary giggled, clapping her hands together, before saying to her sister cleverly, "Well, Winnie, how time flies, huh? When you're dead!"
"It's been great fun, but I โ I guess I'd better be going," Dani stammered out, and she tried to stand up. Wendy moved slowly toward the door, hoping that Dani's would be able to get out and they could slip out without anyone noticing.
She was immediately pushed back in her chair by all three of the witches. Winifred leaned down and brushed a hair out of her face before running her hand down to squeeze the girl's cheek. "Oh, stay for supper."
"I'm not hungry," the young girl insisted with a panicked voice.
Mary smirked devilishly as she caressed Dani's arm lightly, ruffling the folds of her dress and sliding her hair behind her shoulder. She chuckled out, "Oh, but we are."
"Hey! Let go of my little sister!" Max shouted, finally jumping up from behind the bench where he was hiding. Winifred jumped slightly at his announcement of his presence, but she simply rolled her eyes before waving her hand, causing him to go falling to the ground.
"You. There," she ordered, and she flicked her finger so that he went flying into the wall across from where he was. All of the sisters giggled in amusement as Dani shrieked. "I haven't lost my touch, sisters. See? Hello. Good-bye."
She used her powers to lift him into the air, and a sort of green electricity went crackling through his body as he jerked. All of the other teenagers made eye contact, and they made a silent agreement about what they were going to do. Wendy counted down from three by moving her lips, and they sprung into action.
The brunette girl slid across the room to where the lighter had fallen out of Max's pocket. She jumped up to where a very shocked Sarah Sanderson was staring at her. She grabbed a piece of her hair and brought the lighter up swiftly so that a piece of her hair went up in flames. Freddy threw a cauldron over Winifred's head while Allison slammed a broom into Mary's head.
Max jumped to his feet and gestured for Wendy to throw the e lighter to him. She tossed it gently, and as soon as his hands wrapped around it, he began scaling the ladder. He reached the top to where this little balcony was, and he held the lighter for all of the people in the room to see and yelled, "You've messed with the great and powerful Max...and now must su er the consequences. I summon the burning rain of death."
"Burning what?" Sarah asked, and all of the witches looked confused until he clicked the lighter on. Their eyes widened in shock, having never seen anyone conjure fire in their hand.
"He makes fire in his hand!" Winifred shrieked, and they all started screaming bloody murder when the sprinklers went off. Wendy had to stop herself from laughing when she realized what was happening as all of the witches fled to find shelter. "Ohh! Ohh! The burning rain of death! Ohh! Ohh! Come on, you idiots! Get under shelter! Come on, you fools!"
Using this time when the sisters were distracted, all five of the children sprinted out of the house and toward the street. Dani, Freddy, and Allison kept running, but Wendy stopped when she noticed that the Dennison boy was not with them. "Max, come on, you idiot! Why are you moving so slow?"
"The cat told me to get the book," he explained as he joined her side a moment later. Her eyes widened when she saw that Winifred's spellbook was in his hand, its eye open and staring blankly at them. Was he out of his freaking mind?
Her jaw dropped as she stared at him incredulously. What the heck was he talking about? What cat? And how would a cat tell him what to do? She questioned, "What?"
"There it is," he said, and he lifted his finger to point toward the road. Her gaze followed the direction of his finger to see the black cat that had jumped on him earlier standing in the middle of the road. She looked back at him with a very confused look. It moved, and he jumped into action, running after it. "Come on, follow that cat."
"I think he's gone insane," the Addams girl sighed out, but she mimicked his actions nonetheless. She had a feeling that this was gonna be a long night.ย
