prologue

THE SOUND OF METAL clashing together woke the girl up from what seemed a half an hour nap she thought she took. Fluttering her eyes open, the girl looked around squinting her eyes trying to see something besides the pitch black. Rolling to the side, the girl reached over trying to turn on a lamp that used to sit on her bed stand. Instead of feeling the shape of the item, she felt several holes as if it was some type of fence and further ahead was metal. Sitting up to lean her head against the wall, the girl squinted harder trying to see any light source but couldn't see anything.

The sound of her heart thudding was getting louder as she tried to stand up but yelled in pain when she fell back down. Swallowing hard, the girl felt her mouth dry and her hands starting to shake. Pushing herself with her arms and leg that functioned, the girl reached to the either side to figure out where she was. She felt the same thing on the other side. Grabbing her hair with one hand, the girl started to feel short of breath. The room was getting warmer.

ย  ย  ย  "Help me!" She yelled as loud as she could banging on the walls. Tears starting to stream down her face not being able to remember how she got here. Every breath she took felt like her last, they became sharp and shallow gasping for air as if her lungs were starting to collapse. "Somebody! Help! I c-can't get up!" The girl yelled out her voice breaking mid-sentence.

ย  ย ย  The girl hit the metal square box she figured she was in, her chest was tightening and her hands were going numb. Hyperventilating, the girl yelled having barely any hope that someone could hear her but all she could hear was herself. "I'm going to die." She wept curling herself up in a ball taking her gray sweater off feeling too hot but sudden goosebumps running though her body. "I'm dying alone."

ย  ย ย  The girl jumped in slight fear as she heard an alarm from far away and the box starting to rise like an elevator turning lights on. The girl's eyes went wide as she looked down to see an endless black hole while the box started to go faster. Panting harder, the girl scurried to a corner as she assumed she reached the top when the box stopped and lights went red. The lights switched to green and the sound of a buzzer turned on for a few seconds. Before she could do anything, the lights and buzzer turned off leaving her in the darkness again. The girl's chest started to hurt more intensely.

ย  ย ย  The girl's tears stopped as she heard voices above her. A thud echoed on the box as if someone jumped on it. The metal doors above swung open and rays of sunshine blinded her from seeing anything. Swinging her arm over the girl squinted her eyes to see a silhouette of a boy leaning over looking down at her. His high eyebrows was the main feature the girl could point out. "Holy shit." He spoke grabbing the attention of others as they rushed to the box, running his fingers trough his wet hair.

ย  ย ย  "What?"

ย  ย  ย  "What is it, Gally?"

ย  ย  ย  "Nick, it's a girl." Gally replied motioning his hand for someone to come over.

ย  ย  ย  The girl's chest was still beating at the same pace she was panicking in and it didn't help when she saw several not few but several around 30 teenage boys huddled around looking at her. She was getting cold but sweat still prickled around her forehead.

"Why a girl?"

"Why now?"

The boy she assumed was named Nick jumped down and inside the box. His attention to detail made him realize the girl was in the midst of a panic attack. Her short of breath, her sweat, shaking, goosebumps on her arms, her fidgeting, and the stained tears on her face were indicators. The girl's eyes shifted away from the tan skinned boy up to still see all the boys surrounding the box.

"She's having a panic attack." Nick stated, "I need everyone to clear the way."

Another voice having a British accent spoke up, "you heard him, move!" All the boys backed away, most going back to what they were doing.

"Hey, hey," Nick spoke trying to grab back her attention to him as she glanced back to him staring into his brown eyes. "I'm Nick. We need to get you out of this box before you get worse, c'mon."

The girl shook her head, "Who are you? Where am I?"

"I'll explain everything when we get you out of the box. But you need to get out of this so you can get better air." Nick replied climbing back up turning to see the girl still on the ground. "What are you waiting for?" He asked reaching his hand out to her waiting for her to stand up.

"I can't get up." The girl replied, "I already tried."

Nick nodded turning behind him motioning to someone to come over, "Gally get over here. A boy rushed to the leader of the group a thin smile formed on the boy's lips when he made eye-contact with the scared girl. "Need you to lift her up and pass her to me. She can't lift herself up."

ย  ย ย  "Yeah, of course." Gally jumped down inside the box noticing the dried tears on her face and the water forming in her eyes. "I'm going to pick you up, okay?"

ย  ย ย  The girl nodded letting the boy crouch down to pick her up. His left arm under her legs and right arm under her back. Gally walked over to Nick raising her up for him to grab her up. "Oh shuck, you're really light." Nick pointed out before placing her down on the grass.

"Where am I?" The girl asked in desperation using her hands to shield her face from the light.

The two boys glanced at each other before Nick spoke again avoiding the question, "do you remember your name?"

ย  ย  ย  The girl opened her mouth about to argue with him before she realized she actually didn't know what her name was. She actually didn't remember who she was. If she had parents, siblings, friends, workers, someone she lovedโ€”anyone. She didn't remember a single detail of her life. She shut her mouth shaking her head feeling as if she was going crazy. She was in hell most likely.

ย  ย  ย  "What's going on? Why can't I remember who I am? Where am I? Who are you guys? Someone fucking tell me!" The girl yelled looking up at both boys who stayed quiet not knowing what to say.

ย  ย ย  "You're part of the Glade." The girl turned to a dark skinned boy who seemed to be one of the oldest. "This is your new home. Gally, take her to one of the Med-jacks to check what's wrong with her." He stated walking away with Nick to discuss what they were going to do with her. The girl looked around grabbing one of the knives, one of the boys might of dropped when they were looking down at her.

ย  ย  ย  Gally nodded squatting down about to help the girl up before a knife was pointed directly at him. "Woah! Woah!" He exclaimed raising his hands up backing up. "Hey, I'm just trying to help you."

ย  ย  ย  "And I just need answers." The girl's hand started shaking wanting to cry again.

ย  ย  ย  "You need to get checked out and then you have to wait to see what the guys agree on." Gally replied, "c'mon drop the knife. You're safe here." The girl didn't know what to do but agree to let him carry her. Gally picked the girl up in his arms and headed to what the girl assumed was a Med-jack. "Clint!"

ย  ย  ย  A boy slightly over his weight came out of a wooden building his hand motioning to Gally to get her inside. "Lay her down." Gally laid her down on the uncomfortable bed stepping aside to let the other boy inspect her.

ย  ย  ย  "My name's Clint," the boy presented himself receiving a small smile from the girl who still felt fear in her body. "Which leg is it?"

ย  ย  ย  "The left one." She mumbled rolling up the hem of the left side of the pants.

ย  ย  ย  Clint observed what seemed a swollen leg, "is it okay if I touch your leg? I need to know what specific area it is." The girl nodded glancing to Gally who had his arms crossed and an unreadable expression on his face. She turned back to Clint who touched her swollen leg and put pressure making her wince at the lightest touch. "I don't think it's anything major. You probably bruised part of the bone when they put you inside the box."

ย  ย  ย  The girl slightly nodded asking, "if it's just a bruise why does it hurt so much?"

Clint chuckled wrapping her leg with some sort of bandage, "it's not your typical bruise, it's a bruise to the bone. A bone bruise. Similar to a regular bruise but it's a bit deeper. It's going to be stiff and the swelling will last for a few days but you can probably walk on it by tomorrow if you keep it elevated." The boy stood up walking to a small cabinet taking out two small bottles one labeled eybyprofine. The girl assumed it was ibuprofen and just terrible grammar but couldn't figure out what the other one was. "Take these, it'll help with the pain. Gally can you help me set up a rope, we need to keep her leg elevated."

Clint handed the girl one red pill and one blue pill and a glass of water which she drank after swallowing the pills. "Yeah," Gally replied grabbing one of the ropes from the pile on a corner. The boy hooked it up on two of the sticks while Clint grabbed a pillow and tied it on top of the rope.

"C'mon," Clint spoke grabbing her leg and lifting it up and placing it slowly on the pillow. The boy walked towards a cooler and took out an ice pack. He wrapped it with a towel, "put it on the bruise and the swelling will go down. You need rest, we'll let you sleep."

ย  ย  ย  The girl lifted herself up with her elbows feeling drowsy, "no, wait! I need answers!" Gally scratched the back of his head tilting it down before walking out.

ย  ย  ย  Clint grabbed one of the blankets from another bed, "Stay warm. One of the pills you took will knock you out for a while. See you in the morning."

Before the girl could reply back to him her body started to become weak and her body heavy. Her eyelids started to feel heavy and as much as she tried to fight it, once her eyes closedโ€”she was asleep.
