THE FOLLOWING FOUR DAYS AFTER THAT NIGHT, Eden spent them sleeping in her bed, eating ice cream, and listening to her favorite shows. She used to act like it was nothing, to lie. Anyway, no one knew what had happened, but she refused to leave her house and find the world. She only agreed to take in Drea and Sarah, while Josie spent her days with Caden, doing weird couple things. Whatever messages Rafe sent her went to the place of strangers. She didn't want to continue pretending that she loved him just to continue to be accepted in the group.

That's what happened during the day. At night, it was much more different. When darkness fell on the island, Eden took her backpack, then went out through her window to join the Pogues. It was her little moment of decompression. She needed it, she needed to decompress after finding out what happened the night of four days ago. As she had dreaded, all the moments came back to her and the pieces of the puzzle were put together, like she wanted it. She felt ashamed and above all unpleasant for having been a bitch to John B. So she went to see him. She apologized and thanked him every day they saw each other. Well, every night, actually.

And Eden began little by little to like the excitement which floated in her when she was surrounded by her three former friends, and the little Carrera who made efforts to appreciate her. And it works. But don't exaggerate too much. Kiara hasn't asked her to go save turtles together yet, so it's not winning yet for Eden. For the moment, the two girls were only a Pogue and a Kook who tries to find each other other than boys, or assholes ( for Eden ) as friends.

But Eden was not going to be the one who was going to confide. She always had this habit of thinking that her problems didn't interest anyone, and that it was useless for others to know about them. They were just flaws in her life that often make her doubt herself, or even hate her because she believes that all her problems came to her by fate. She still has this thought swirling around in her head that what happened, happened because it had to. Nothing is done by chance. Each success, each failure, problems or anything, is meant to be destined and make us go back and then move forward. And the opposite. For Eden, she was taking several steps back at the moment, and no one was able to stop her. She will back up until she hits bottom. . .

"Eden," Pope said loudly to wake her up. She jumped, raising her head where a sheet of paper was stuck to her cheek. He chuckled, playing with his pencil between his fingers. "Are you okay? We can stop if you want."

She shook her head, brushing the hair from her face. "No. We need to keep investigating every Violeta on this damn island."

"Yeah, but I don't think the Violetas are up at one o'clock in the morning, Ed'." He answered, putting the papers together and the diaries. "Anyway, everyone is asleep."

"I'm not." She replied, removing the sheet of paper from her cheek, wiping the sweat off her skin. "We. . . I mean, you can go to sleep. I'll keep looking for a bit."

Pope looked at her with a little frown, but not too much, seeing her pull out all the papers and picking her phone. She was tired, every feature on her face showed it. Pope sighed with a small smirk, then sat down next to her again. Eden turned her gaze towards him, surprised, but a smile appeared in turn on her lips.

"Don't be forced to stay. I can do it on my own."

He shrugged one shoulder. "I know. But it's cool working with you." She gave a cute smile, showing her delicacy. Eden has always kept a side that she will always offer to Pope. The calm and kind one, never mean or not able to endure. She only tries to give him what he gives her whenever he was with her.

"Pope, I. . . I never told you how sorry I was for leaving you. You and the others." She confided, not daring to look at him. When she looks at people and makes excuses, it's like she sees all the bad things she could have done better. "You know, it wasn't my point to hurt you by leaving you guys. I never meant to do that to none of you."

"That's okay, Eden." He said kindly, but she refused to hear that.

She shook her head from side to side, frowning. "You see, that's what everyone tells me. That it's okay. But it's not. You say it like my mistakes don't affect anyone. Whereas. . . They affect me so, why can't you just treat me like I deserve? Like the Kooks do when I do something wrong? Yell at me and— and reject me?"

Pope continued to write stuff on his paper, feeling Eden's gaze finally land on him. He whispered, "Because we're not Kooks. We're Pogues. You really don't remember the list of rules we made with JB and JJ?" She fixed her eyes with his, already finding the answer. "Whenever a Pogue does something stupid, the first thing is to. . ."

"To stay by his or her side no matter what." She finished the sentence, before lowering her head to her bouncing knee.

Of course she remembered. This list was specifically made when JJ and John B had an argument for some stupid reason, and so much that Eden was afraid of losing them, she created a list with each of them. All the things that went through their minds, they wrote it down. And then they made a copy of that list, so they each had one.

She snickered, remembering one thing from the list. "I remember marking — never to swim with the Kooks for fear of getting eaten."

Pope chuckled, shaking his head. "Yeah. And when John B saw that, he said he'd save you if that happened. And he actually do it." He confirmed, which made Eden stop laughing.

She gave an awkward smile, waiting to hear more. "What?"

"Yeah. Sometimes, when he sees you at the beach, his eyes are only locked on you. And when he sees you going in the water with Rafe, cool for you, you don't see how he just make a whole scene about it."

Eden, not knowing what to answer, crossed her lips in a embarrassed smile, then lowered her head. She sighed, then ran her hand through her hair. "I— I'll go. It's late, and. . . My brother won't be able to cover me until three o'clock. So, just tell the others I'll be back during the day."

"During the day? Aren't you afraid your friends will see you with us?"

Eden sighed, putting her bag on her right shoulder. "They'll probably kill me, but don't worry. I got it."

"Okay. Be careful on your super-nice bike."

She sneered before giving him a wave of her hand, then leaving the Chateau to head for her bicycle, which was still leaning against the tree. It took a good ten minutes before finally getting out of the Cut, and arriving on Figure Eight. The streetlights lit up the small figure, which pedaled fast enough to no longer have to feel like she was being watched. It's like that every time she's alone at night. The feeling of having thousands of eyes on her while everyone else is in bed was terrifying. Eden sighed once, keeping calm in her body, avoiding another panic attack.

When she passed the Camerons' house, she noticed a shadow pass between the trees. The Winslow girl frowned, stopped right above a lamp post, having a light to reassure her a little. Curiosity caught her like a gust of wind, and pushed her to go and see. But she jumped when she saw the figure walking through the trees again, now with a bag on his shoulders. Eden squinted to try to see who it was, and what she saw was none other than Caden Miles, getting on his skateboard and starting to leave in the darkest corner. Like it was just a shadow for a second.

THE NEXT MORNING, EDEN WAS getting boxes out of Fred Barrow's van. Yasmina had just asked her boyfriend to move in with them, to see what that would do. For Noah, it's complete happiness. He was happy to have finally a father figure close to him again, and not just girls on either side. For Eden, it was a disaster. Her world seemed to crumble more and more as she entered boxes, and placed them on the floor of the house. Each cardboard showed Fred taking another big step in the Winslow family, making Eden vomit.

She didn't want her father to be replaced. Because when Fred Barrow spends his first night in the house, as not a guest, but an resident of this house, it will mark the truth that Eden had been avoiding for ten months : Everyone has moved on, she was the only one who couldn't move on.

"Okay, so," Yasmina started, advancing towards Noah, Fred and Eden who had boxes full in their arms. "Tonight we eat together to celebrate Fred's arrival, all right?" Noah nodded, while Fred showed an uneasy smile already knowing Eden's reaction. He was used to it now.

Eden sighed, lowering her head towards her feet, but her mother noticed her. Yasmina smiled desperately, waving the boys off to leave the two girls together. "I should—"

"No, you stay here." Yasmina cut her off in her sentence, taking her by the shoulders. Eden sighed, depositing the box in the trunk of the car. "Look, honey, I know it's a big step what's going on today. And you're not ready, but. . . We have to move on."

Eden shook her head as if to erase all the words that came out of her mouth. "So why are you doing this if I'm not ready? It's like you— you don't understand."

"Baby, listen. . ." The mother slid her hands to Eden's arms which were still sensitive, but contained her pain in her body. "I love Fred. And I know you miss your dad, we all know that. But he's dead."

"Only ten months ago. Just that, mom. And you just forget him like this?"

"Your father had been dead for more than ten months, for me, Eden." She confessed suddenly, slamming the rage inside her. Eden looked at her with lots of questions scattering in her eyes, but Yasmina didn't answer any. As if she didn't know her daughter. A mother should see the concern in her daughter's eyes. But not Yasmina. She never saw it.

Eden replied, "Yeah, I can see it. What happened between you? You were always happy with him."

"Honey, where do you think you got irritated from the good liar that you are?" Yasmina pointed out to her daughter, with a voice anything but regretful, as if she was happy that Eden was just lying and lying, over and over, all the damn time.

In short, she didn't care what her daughter thought, or what she wanted. Yasmina didn't take into account what Eden wanted, but what she herself wanted. It was her before her daughter. Noah before her daughter. Fred before her daughter. Eden was only a ghost in this family, a ghost who only haunted them and made their life more difficult without making the slightest move.

"I'm just asking you to come to this dinner tonight, okay? It's not a big deal."

Eden crossed her arms over her chest, keeping her hard inside. "What if I don't?"

"Then. . . Your little friend right there," The mother pointed to the boat in the distance, but exactly to John B who was walking from side to side, tools in his hands. "He's not going to be able to keep his job."

Eden gasped, "Mom, what's wrong with you?"

Yasmina frowned. "With me?" She chuckled mockingly. "My dear, you're the one who's falling back into the hands of the Pogues. You think I don't know that you go out every night? Your brother told me, from the first night."

Ouch. This one hurt even more. Eden has always counted on Noah to cover her, but we have to believe that he was fooled by the threats that Yasmina gave to Eden in the past.

"Come on, sweetheart." She said, patting Eden's right arm, forcing her back to work. Yasmina walked past her daughter, making way for Noah who was placed in the doorway, staring desolately at his sister. Eden looked away, and when she saw the mother-son duo enter the house, she took one last look and started running to the boat.

Her feet hit the cool wood floating above the water, and made her way to the boat. The afternoon sun clung to her skin, burning it with sparkles, as the breeze swept through her hair. When she finally made in front of the boat, she over the ledge, then her buttocks fell on it and her feet on the ground. Eden looked up, seeing John B's head protruding from there, staring at her with frowning eyebrows.

          "Uh. . . What's up there?"

Eden nodded, panting for her run. "Do you. . . Do you want to go for a walk? Like, this place is haunted by me, so—" She stopped, seeing the look John B gave her. She sighed, and exhaled again. "Actually, I can go walking alone, too. So, I'm just gonna leave you."

"Wait!" He screamed, stopping her as she turned around. "Can you come help me with something before you leave?"

"Seriously? That's your job, dude. Not mine, so bye-bye."

He squinted, mocking laughter ringing through his teeth. "Yeah. I knew you weren't too good with it, actually."

"Naturally, I'm better than you at everything so. . . Wait a minute while I join you." She answered, loving to be challenged with him.

Eden climbed on the ladder of the boat, climbing to the top, where the steering wheel was placed. When she arrived, she had the vision of John B shirtless, with a bandana around his neck as usual. Eden looked at him for a moment, seeing his muscles move with the strength he put in when he worked with tools.

"Come here." He ordered gently, waving his hand to Eden.

She pulled herself out of her thoughts, and knelt down like him, by his side. "What I have to do?"

John B reached for the screwdriver dropping it into Eden's palm afterwards. "The steering wheel isn't tight enough, it's rusty. We have to fix it, we will then put acid to remove the rust."

          "All right."

"Watch out for your pretty fingernails, sweetheart."

She grimaced, looking at him with a smirk. "Watch out for my pretty scratchy fingernails, John B." He rolled his eyes, then Eden gave a childish smile.

The two set to work as the sunny day descended upon them. They shared a snack, plus two orange juice cups and exchanged words only to piss the other off at what they were doing. After having made the mixture of lemon and coarse salt to make acid, to put it on the steering wheel of the boat, Eden lies down on the ground, letting her chest rise and come down again. John B felt his gaze wander for a second towards her as she took off her top, to be left in her pale blue bikini.

"I wonder where the stars are right now." She started the discussion, her breath hitching sometimes.

John B continued to fiddle with the screwdriver, shrugging, not looking at her. "It's the sun that engulfs them with its luminosity. They are still there."

Eden swept her eyes over him, then sat down. "Come on. You can take a two-minute break. Fred isn't going to kill you." He didn't answer, remaining focused on his stuff. She rolled her eyes and walked slowly towards him, without him seeing her, then pinched his sides, which made him jump suddenly.

"Duh, that was gross."

"Come on. Drop your tools for two minutes, okay?" She made puppy eyes, pouting. He bit his lip cautiously, and dropped the tools on the floor.

          "But only two minutes."

"Mmh-mh." She hummed, laying back on the floor, but now accompanied by John B in her movement. Eden placed her hands on her belly, while he placed his behind his head.

"Hey, Eden," He said, drawing her attention directly. She looked at him, and
John B shook his head. "No. Forget it."

"You can't do that, John B. Tell me." Eden knew that when he did that, it was because he was afraid to say something and didn't dare, for fear of hurting the person. But she wasn't afraid of being hurt, she already had a thousand wounds inside her. Nothing from John B could hurt her more. "What? You gonna tell me you stole something off the boat? It doesn't matter. Fred isn't gonna fire you."

John B chuckled slightly, shaking his head. "No, not that. But I did stole something. Just a snack of chips lying around. It was literally calling me. Not my fault."

"Of course." She sighed ironically, turning her head to the sky. "Look," Eden closed one eye, pointing at the taco cloud in the sky. "It's so cool."

John B squinted like an idiot, trying to see. "Where?"

Eden rolled her eyes, giggling. She curled his finger in her hand, then pointed it back at the image in the sky. "It's a taco." John B's eyes fell not on the image in the sky, but on Eden's face which was in profile. In his eyes, she has always been perfect. Her features were neatly aligned, and every detail just made more sense. "You see, now?" She asked her question by setting her eyes on John B who was already looking at her.

He turned away at the second, and nodded uncomfortably. "Right. A taco. And. . . Look right there," He pointed his finger in the direction of the star-shaped cloud. "Well, they're not all hidden."

          "Guess so." She simply whispered.

The next few minutes passed in silence as Eden played with the golden rings on her fingers. John B was focused on moving his brown eyes from every cloud he saw, until they landed on the sun, dazzling it. He put his hand on his eyelids, and Eden gave him a weird look. The tension between them could have killed them if Eden wouldn't have heard footsteps on the boat, as well as people talking. Her senses kicked in like an emergency alarm, as John B slowly stood up, wondering what was going on.

Eden put her hand on his mouth, raising her eyebrows. "There are people here." Frowning, John B tried to speak, but it only amounted to mimes with his hands. "I don't hear you, dumbass." He rolled his eyes violently, then pointed Eden's hand which was tightly closed over his mouth. "Oh. Sorry."

"We don't care that there is someone, Eden." He finally spoke, shrugging one shoulder. "It's just two teenagers working on a boat together. Nothing wrong."

Everything seemed so simple to him. He didn't mind being seen with Princess Kook. And it didn't bother Eden that she was seen with the popular Pogue from the Cut. Everything seemed so much easier to him because he had nothing to lose. Because his friends were able to accept a Kook sticking her nose in their business. Because he was never going to be ashamed of her. Eden wasn't ashamed of him, she was ashamed of her. She didn't have friends as good as him to accept without making a big deal out of it that she sees the Pogues. She didn't have any of that, but she's had it before. And she would give anything to go back in time sometimes. And other times, it suits her to live in this life on Figure Eight.

"Eden!" And that's when she realized it was Drea.

John B also had the click, making him open his eyes wide. "Ooh, that's the girl with the blonde hair who's really crazy. She's nice. I'm sure she's—"

Eden grabbed him by the shoulders, putting him back down as he was going to get up to see the girl. "And since when do you know so much about my friends? I thought you didn't like the Kooks, huh?" She joked, doing a dance with her eyebrows.

"'Cause sometimes I see you and they appear in the background. But you're still number one, pretty girl." He said, raising his finger and giving a warm wink.

Eden pinched her arm, blaming herself for having just been a little jealous of Drea because she had the right to be looked at by John Booker Routledge. But what should have happened is that Eden would have kept calm and said nothing. But she couldn't. How can she manage to control her pain but not her jealousy? Argh, bullshit. . .

"I don't care if I'm number one, two, nine or even forty. I just don't want her to see us together."

"Why that?"

She sighed, "Can't you just stop asking questions, and do what I say?"

John B looked at her, shaking his head. "I could well obey you every day, but this is not possible right now."

She hated when he answered everything, but his answers were given with truth and sweetness, always making her roll her eyes.

"And can you tell me why it's not possible?" She asked, annoyed.

"I thought we weren't supposed to ask any more questions." A punch to the shoulder went to his shoulder, making him groan in pain loud enough for Eden to be sure Drea heard him. "Ow!"

"Shh. Damn." She ordered him with no delicacy.

He frowned, his mouth hanging open. "You hit me, you crazy girl."

Eden turned her head towards him, rolling her eyes. "No shit, Sherlock."

"Dude?" Eden's eyes fell to the ground when she realized that there was not only Drea, but also Sarah calling her name. "Girl, we know you're here. What are you doing? Hide and seek with yourself?"

When the two girls got to where John B and Eden were lying two seconds ago, they were greeted by two teenagers taken in flagrante delicto. Eden turned to her two friends in a very slow movement, afraid to see their reaction. John B, meanwhile, he assembled to tinker on the steering wheel of the boat, screwing it.

"Guys, what's up?" She greeted them, making the 'up' last a very long time. Drea and Sarah looked at each other, then their heads leaned towards John B who had his back turned, not seeing them. "Yo. Hey, what are you doing here?"

Drea frowned. "It is John B Routledge?"

Follow the plan, follow the plan,
John B. . . She repeated herself in her thoughts. But of course he didn't.

He stood up, exposing his muscular chest to the two girls in front of him. "Hey, girls." Drea's mouth opened a little as Sarah closed her eyes, covering them with her hand.

Eden rolled her eyes in front of the scene, but finally turned to John B, giving him a devastating look. "So, this guy right here works on this boat and. . . And he needed help 'cause he's a complete idiot. And since I'm the nicest girl, well, I helped him. Huh, big boy?" She threatened, pinching his shoulder.

He kept his groan to himself, then faced the two girls, giving a smirk. "Exactly. I needed her. Didn't I, pretty girl?"

Sarah tried to contain her laughter while Drea made no effort to. Eden sighed through her nostrils, looking at him furiously. "Okay, my dudes. We're leaving. Right now."

"No. No, we'll stay here. So you can finish helping him with his thing." Drea contradicted her, a smirk as usual when Eden is with a guy.

Eden refused, narrowed her eyes. "I don't think he still needs me. Do you?" She asked John B, turning to him, but he was focused staring at Sarah who was also staring at him. Oh, yeah. Eden had forgotten that. But she didn't have time for that. "Do you?" She repeated.

Sarah interposed, "You should stay with him, in case he steals something."

John B immediately replied, "What? Are you going to report me again, Cameron?"

Rolling her eyes, she sighed in discouragement at his attitude. "I already told you, I didn't tell my dad you took scuba gear." John B nodded, giving an unsure look, and put his hands in his pockets.

Caught in-between, that's what Eden thought at the present moment. Be she leaned on the side of John B, only to be told by the two girls that she is taking the side of a Pogue, which is very bad for a Kook. Either she sides with Sarah, and everything continues to be fine, but John B is going to be sulky. Or, she takes no side.

"Just forget it happened. It'll be better  like that, guys." Eden gave her opinion. And she didn't even lie. It was the best solution to just forget. John B and Sarah looked at each other before only shrugging. "Good. Now, let's finish this quickly so I can leave."

While Eden placed herself on her knees again with John B by her side, Sarah and Drea sat down, leaning on the edge, their legs placed in front of them in an arrow. John B took the screwdriver and his muscles tensed with the force he put into his movements. He made a sign to Eden to take the mixture of acid that she had prepared, then she dragged a paintbrush into the bowl, and started tapping the steering wheel.

"So, you guys are what, like— like friends or just crewmates who work on a boat?" Drea started the conversation, taking in the mouth a lollipop she always has on her when she goes out to see friends.

Eden and John B didn't move their gaze from what they did, almost afraid to say the real reason. "I'm the girl who welcomes John B Routledge to work on my boat. That's all."

Sarah looks at Eden with a lost gaze. "Rafe will be jealous, get ready."

The Winslow girl chuckled under her breath, shrugging nonchalantly. "I don't really care if he's jealous or not actually. We are dead, you know? Dead, dead, dead."

Drea frowned, her questioning eyes staring at Eden like crazy. "Dead? Like, there's nothing left? You're no longer in a relationship?"

"I've never been in a relationship with Rafe, and you know it."

"Yeah, but we all thought that was, like, a. . . A secret relationship. It wasn't?"

Eden wondered sometimes, and even often, if her friends knew who she really was. Did they know the real reason why she didn't want a romantic relationship? Why does she always reject boys who make advances to her? Did they at least see her, or was it just a distraction when they had nothing to do with their day but hang out in the pool with their boyfriend ( or some random guy )? Did she have a right to a real place in Figure Eight, or was she just a girl who still had to find her place in the world? Eden never had a place in her life, she always waited for someone to offer her one.

"No. I'm not in that anymore. It just hurts more." She confessed under the precise gaze of her friends, and of John B who had his eyebrows furrowed as the truth fell on him like a storm.

Sarah nodded. "Yeah. Right. Like, Josie, she will soon fall into a depression. Her love with Caden isn't real, he's a psycho."

Eden suddenly turned her head so quickly that it hurt her a little. Caden, a sleazy guy? Really, yeah. What was he doing last night at the Camerons' house sneaking through the trees with a bag on his back? "Psycho? Like, he wants to kill people?" Drea and John B frowned, holding back a small laugh.

Sarah looked at her with humor and uncertainty at the question. "No. Rather psycho, like, he does weird things. Jo' noticed that he often goes out at night, but she doesn't know where."

John B growled, catching everyone's attention. Eden turned her back towards him, seeing him with his finger in his mouth, sucking the blood that fell on his finger. "Could you stop talking and help me for a second?"

She rolled her eyes at the change in his attitude. "Calm down, Mr. Grumpy. I have bandages." Eden leaned towards a drawer where the first aid kit was, then a Hello Kitty plasticizer came out. He looked at her ridiculously, but she didn't care, and put the plasticizer on his thumb. "There, no more whining, Routledge."

"I was not whining."

"You totally did." Sarah and Drea answered at the same time, receiving a happy smile from Eden.

WHEN YASMINA TOLD EDEN TO DRESS CLEANLY, she nearly had a heart attack. Already that she agreed to eat with them for this stupid dinner, she had to arrive in a little red flowery dress. But she kept it classy with her high white Converses, and her summer bracelets that fluttered in the air on her wrists. Her hair wasn't even straightened or curled, she only trapped it in a simple ponytail that bounced down her back when she made the slightest move.

Her smile that was on display throughout dinner was just a little flower that smiled in the sun, but waited for nightfall to finally be able to flee the bees around her. Eden's leg just kept bouncing, and bouncing, and bouncing. She felt left out even though Noah was trying with all his heart to introduce her, but she was still mad at him. She was mad at her naughty mother who doesn't even think about one of her daughter's hair. And to Fred Barrow who stood in front of her, with her mother's hand clasped in his. He also did his best to encourage Eden to join the discussion, but it was too hard. The family meals with her real father came back to her like tsunamis in the head. They gobbled it up to find a way to escape, and accept help from others.

But she couldn't, she couldn't let him go. Eden could still hear his laugh ringing in her ears. She could still see him getting up from the table, and coming to hug her because she was pouting at her fight with the Pogues. Each memory was now just a song that repeated itself in her head, and the lyrics remained there.

"And you, Eden," Fred called out to her, pulling her out of her thoughts. She looked up at him, gasping. "Are you okay with my arrival? Noah is, but I want to make sure you are too."

She knew he already knew the answer. Everyone knew the answer, but to say it out loud in front of him while he was doing his best to be nice would just be a bitch. And she didn't want to be like that today. "I will get used. It's just gonna take a little time, but. . . I'm okay with you being with my mom. At least make her happy."

Fred looked at the girl in front of him, and a convinced smile appeared there. Eden tried to escape the smiles of everyone around her, giving an awkward grin before taking a bite of her salad. They thought maybe they had finally succeeded in convincing her, but Eden was just playing with them. She was sure that something was hiding behind the weird arrival of Fred Barrow. He was, from the moment Thomas Perez was pronounced missing, the first man that Yasmina ever dated and they fell in love immediately. It was no coincidence for Eden. Fred Barrow was connected to Thomas' death, she was one hundred percent sure of it.

A bell rang at the door, turning everyone's head towards the entrance. Fred wiped his mouth, getting ready to get up, but Eden did it before him. "It's fine, I'm going."

          "Thank you, Eden."

She smiled warmly, keeping herself in her game, then got up from the table. When she opened the door, a box was laying there. She frowned, looking around for someone, but no one. Eden took the box in her sweaty hands, and she almost fell on the floor when she read the name on it :

          CUTIE PIE.
