But my jolly sailor bold

๐•‹โ„๐”ผ late afternoon sun draped the sky in hues of amber and gold, casting long shadows across the La Push reservation. Rain sat cross-legged on the grass, surrounded by the wolf pack, her laughter ringing out amidst their playful banter. She leaned into Erian's side, stealing a fry from his plate as she grinned mischievously at the rest of the group. "You're the worst," Erian teased, though his tone carried no bite. His grin betrayed him as he mockingly swatted at her hand.

"Correction," Rain said, popping the fry into her mouth and pointing at herself. "I'm the best at being the worst. Big difference."

"Rain's got a point," Paul interjected, tossing a bottle cap at her that she caught mid-air. "She's practically made it an art form."

"Thank you, Paul," Rain replied, placing a hand over her heart like she'd just won an award. "Finally, someone who recognizes my genius." Emily walked over, a plate of cookies in hand. "You're all a bunch of children," she said, shaking her head with mock exasperation as she passed the treats around. "Oh, come on, Emily," Rain said, grabbing a cookie. "You love us."

"Most days," Emily said, grinning.

The pack's energy was infectious, and Rain found herself fully immersed in their easy camaraderie. It was these moments that made her feel like she was part of something biggerโ€”a family she hadn't realized she needed.

As the chatter continued, Jacob suddenly stood up, brushing his hands off on his jeans. "Alright, who's up for cliff diving?"

The group erupted in excited agreement, save for Rain, who froze mid-bite of her second cookie. She raised a finger. "Hold up. Cliff diving? As in jumping-off-a-giant-rock-into-the-ocean cliff diving?"

"Exactly," Jacob said, smirking.

Rain's gaze flickered between the group and Erian, who had a sparkle of mischief in his eyes. "Oh no, you're not dragging me into this," she said, narrowing her eyes at him.

"You'll be fine," Erian said, resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Besides, it'll be fun."

"Fun," Rain echoed flatly. "You know what else is fun? Not dying."

The pack burst into laughter, and Emily gave her a playful nudge. "Come on, Rain. You can borrow one of my swimsuits. It'll be worth it."

Rain sighed dramatically, throwing her hands in the air. "Fine. But if I belly flop, I'm haunting all of you."

The cliff loomed high above the churning ocean, the sound of waves crashing against the rocks echoing up toward them. Rain adjusted the swimsuit Emily had lent herโ€”a dark blue one-piece that hugged her comfortablyโ€”and peered over the edge.

"It's not so bad once you're up here," Jacob said, bouncing on the balls of his feet. "Says the guy who turns into a giant wolf and leaps over trees for fun," Rain quipped, earning a chuckle from the group. Erian stepped closer, brushing his fingers against hers. "You've got this, Raindrop. And I'll be right behind you."

Rain glanced at him, her heart skipping a beat at the warmth in his smile. "You better be," she said, trying to mask her nervousness with humour.

One by one, the pack members dove off the edge, whooping as they disappeared into the sparkling blue below. Rain took a deep breath and stepped to the edge, her toes curling over the rocky surface.

"Okay," she said, mostly to herself. "One... two... threeโ€”ah, screw it!"

She leapt, the wind rushing past her as she plummeted toward the water. For a moment, her mind went blank, the exhilaration overriding her nerves. Then she hit the water, cool and sharp against her skin.

The change was immediate. Pain shot through her as her body began to shiftโ€”her legs fusing, her skin shimmering, her hands webbing. The transformation was as familiar as it was overwhelming, and within moments. Her tail flicked instinctively, propelling her through the water with ease. She surfaced briefly to signal to the pack, letting her tail break the surface in a playful splash.

Above, the pack watched in awe.

"Was that... her tail?" Seth asked, leaning forward for a better view.

"Yup," Paul said, grinning. "That's our Rain for youโ€”always full of surprises."

Erian didn't wait. He dove in, the water enveloping him in a rush of coolness. As he opened his eyes underwater, he saw herโ€”a flash of silver and blue, a sleek figure moving gracefully through the depths.

Rain swam toward him, her movements fluid and mesmerizing. Her eyes met his, glowing faintly in the dim light beneath the waves. She reached out, her webbed fingers brushing against his cheek.

In that moment, she pulled him closer and kissed him. It was soft, tender, and entirely unlike anything he'd ever experienced. The world around them seemed to blur, the ocean their only witness. When they surfaced, gasping for air, the pack cheered from above. Rain floated beside Erian, her siren form fully revealed in the golden light of the setting sun. Her scales shimmered like liquid silver, and her tail moved lazily beneath the water.

"Rain," Leah called from the edge of the cliff, her tone somewhere between awe and amusement, "you didn't tell us you were part mermaid!" Rain grinned, flicking water at them with her tail. "Siren, actually. Mermaids are way too overrated."

The pack laughed, their initial shock giving way to admiration. Erian, still floating beside her, reached for her hand under the water.

"You're incredible," he murmured, his eyes never leaving hers.

Rain smiled, a blush rising to her cheeks despite the coolness of the water. "Took you long enough to figure that out."

As the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in fiery hues, the group continued to cheer, laugh, and dive into the ocean, their bond strengthened by the shared adventure. And for the first time in a long while, Rain felt entirely at peace, surrounded by her family, her pack, and the boy who saw her for everything she was.

The bonfire crackled in the quiet of the night, flames dancing and casting flickering shadows across the circle of friends. The wolf pack lounged comfortably, their laughter and teasing from earlier replaced with a warm camaraderie. Rain sat among them, her damp hair tousled from the ocean and a borrowed blanket draped over her shoulders. Erian sat close, his arm brushing hers as he made sure the blanket stayed snug around her.

She leaned into the warmth of the fire, feeling her heartbeat slow after the adrenaline of the day. For a moment, there was only the sound of waves in the distance and the occasional crackle of the flames.

Paul broke the silence first, stretching his legs out toward the fire. "Okay, Rain, you've got to tell usโ€”what's it like, turning into a siren? Is it, like, magical and painless? Or do you just snap your fingers andโ€”poofโ€”fish tail?"

Rain let out a dry laugh, tucking her knees under the blanket. "Magical? Sure. Painless? Absolutely not."

The group perked up, their curiosity evident. Even Leah, who usually played it cool, tilted her head to listen.

"It hurts every single time," Rain admitted, her voice soft. "It's like... every bone in my body shatters and rearranges itself. My legs fuse together, my skin feels like it's on fire changes texture, and gills form on my sides which tears itself apart to make way for it. It's this deep, burning pain, like my body's fighting itself before it gives in."

The pack fell silent, a mix of awe and unease flickering across their faces.

"Why would you do it, then?" Seth asked, his brow furrowing.

Rain smiled faintly, her gaze fixed on the flames. "Because it's who I am. As much as it hurts, there's this freedom in it too. When I'm in the water, it's like the ocean is a part of me, and everything elseโ€”pain, worry, fearโ€”just fades away. It's worth it every time besides if I am not in the water for a long period of time, my skin dries, and I become weak then I die."

Erian's hand brushed hers beneath the blanket, a silent gesture of comfort. She glanced at him, finding his expression one of admiration and quiet concern.

Paul cleared his throat, breaking the moment. "Alright, so that's transformation covered. Now tell usโ€”what's the deal with the whole siren voice thing? Can you actually, like, sing people into a trance?"

Rain arched a brow, her lips twitching into a smirk. "Oh, you mean the 'hypnotize people and lure sailors to their doom' thing?"

Paul shrugged. "I mean, if the myth fits..."

The pack chuckled, their curiosity barely contained, as Rain shook her head with a wry smile. "It's powerful," she admitted, her voice carrying a gravity that silenced the laughter. "So powerful, in fact, that it can lure sailors to their doom or make them so obsessed with the sound of my voice that they'd rather die than live without it, so powerful that it can control the might of the ocean. That's the darker side of what I am."

The crackling of the fire seemed louder in the ensuing quiet, her words sinking in like the tide pulling at the shore.

Rain glanced at them, her tone softening. "But it's not all sinister. My voice can also soothe pain, wrap someone in a sense of peace when they need it most. It's a bomb, a comfort... but only for some." Her gaze flickered to Erian, her expression wistful. "For humans and vampires, though, it's dangerousโ€”too dangerous. The sound can unnerve them, even destroy them, depending on the emotions I weave into the song."

Paul, who had been leaning back with his usual carefree demeanour, now sat straighter, his brow furrowed. "What about us? Shifters?"

Rain's lips curved into a small smile. "You're the exception. My voice doesn't harm wolves. Instead, it calms you, even when you're at your most volatile. It can bring you back to your human form if you lose control." She paused, her tone laced with both humour and pride. "Think of it as your built-in siren sedative."

Seth let out a low whistle. "That's... pretty insane. You're like a supernatural chill pill."

The pack laughed, the tension easing as they processed her words, but the weight of what she could do lingered in their expressions. Rain's smile widened, but she didn't miss the awe in their eyesโ€”nor the respect.

"It's not something I use lightly," she added, her voice quieter now, yet firm. "What I sing and how I sing it matters. It's not just about sound; it's about intent. My song is a tool, one that can heal or harm depending on the purpose behind it."

"So, it's real?" Leah asked, leaning forward, her eyes narrowing in curiosity. "You can actually sing like that?"

Rain sighed, knowing where this was heading. "Yes, but I don't just bust it out for fun."

Paul's grin widened. "Well, now you have to."

The pack erupted in playful pleas, their voices overlapping.

"Come on, Rain!"

"Just a little!"

"We promise not to fall in love with you, Scout's honour."

Rain laughed, holding up her hands. "Alright, alright! But if Emily or anyone else shows up, I'm stopping immediately."

She glanced around the darkened forest, her sharp senses ensuring there were no stray humans in earshot. Satisfied, she took a deep breath, the teasing smirk on her lips replaced with something softer, more vulnerable.

The first note slipped from her lips like a breeze over water, soft and melodic. Her voice carried through the night, weaving a song that wasn't quite of this world. It was hauntingly beautiful, a melody that seemed to resonate with the soul. The wolves, usually restless and energetic, grew still.

Rain's voice rose and fell, each note shimmering like the moonlight on the ocean. The pack listened in rapt silence, their expressions softening as the song wrapped around them like a gentle tide. Even Paul, who had been the loudest in his teasing, leaned back with a peaceful smile, his eyes closed.

Erian couldn't take his eyes off her. To him, she was radiant, her voice more than just a soundโ€”it was an experience. He felt the song's warmth seep into his chest, a mix of peace and awe flooding him.

When Rain's voice faded, leaving only the crackle of the fire, the group remained silent for a long moment, as if afraid to break the spell.

"Okay," Paul said finally, his voice hushed. "That was... wow."

Leah nodded, her usual sarcasm absent. "Yeah. I feel like I just had the best therapy session of my life."

Erian leaned closer, his voice low so only she could hear. "You're more magical than you give yourself credit for."

Rain met his gaze, her cheeks warming under his adoration. The firelight reflected in his eyes, and for a moment, it felt like the world had narrowed to just the two of them.

"Alright, lovebirds," Jacob called, his tone teasing. "Let's not make this weird."

Rain threw a playful glare his way, but the corner of her mouth lifted in a smile. This was her familyโ€”wild, chaotic, and utterly irreplaceable. And tonight, surrounded by warmth and laughter, she felt entirely at home.
