"๐ don't know why you want to sit through all those zombies eating people and no hot guys kissing anybody," Jessica said as she, Rain, and Bella walked out of the movie theatre into the cool, dark night.
Rain chuckled, adding with dramatic flair, "It's a real tragedy. All those zombies and not a single shirtless heartthrob in sight."
Jessica nodded emphatically. "I know, right! But why are there so many zombie movies anyway? If it's supposed to, like, draw a parallel about leprosy, my cousin had leprosy. It's not funny, you know. And, like, is it supposed to be a metaphor for consumerism? Don't be so pleased with your own, like, self-reverential cleverness, you know."
Rain smiled, but her attention shifted to Bella, who was quiet and staring at the ground as if lost in another world. Rain placed a comforting hand on Bella's shoulder, causing Bella to look up and smile weakly before returning her gaze downward.
Jessica continued her monologue. "Like, some girls like to shop. Not all girls, apparently. Though I was surprised you even called at all, you know? Like, your depression thing, I get it. I'm totally, totally worried. But after a while, it's like, you're still bumming?"
Rain shot Jessica a disapproving look just as a man's voice interrupted. "Want a ride, girls?"
Rain turned to see a group of men on motorbikes leering at them. She instinctively glared at the men before turning to Bella. "Come on." Bella, however, was staring intently at the group. She looked forward and gasped, making Rain and Jessica stand in front of her in confusion. Rain's worry grew. "Bella, let's go," she urged gently.
The man called out again, "Come here for a sec."
Bella glanced back at the group, then at the girls. "I think I know those guys," she said.
Rain and Jessica exchanged glances before looking at the men again. "We got beer. We got bikes," one of the men called out. Jessica's fear was palpable. "Well, they seem great. Can we go?" Bella looked between the girls and the men. "I'm just gonna see something," she said before walking toward the group.
"Bella!" Rain called out, frustration and worry in her voice. She turned to Jessica. "Jessica, you can go. I'll stay here for Bella."
Jessica hesitated. "Are you sure?"
Rain's demeanour turned steely. "Go now."
Jessica nodded, fear in her eyes, and hurried away. Rain turned back, her eyes fixed on Bella, ready to intervene if things went south.
"Hey girly!"
"Alright, alright, we got a taker," the man said to his friends, grinning as Bella walked up to them. "Sorry, I thought you were someone else," Bella said, her voice unsure. The man responded with a flirtatious tone, "No, that's cool. I'll be whoever you want me to be, honey." Rain, hearing everything, clenched her jaw and fists, watching the man make space on his bike for Bella. "So, what do you say?" he asked Bella. Rain muttered under her breath, "Don't, Bella. Walk away." Her protective instincts and Siren nature were both on high alert, and she glared at the man as if he were prey.
Despite her internal warning, Bella got on the bike after a moment of hesitation, and the man drove off quickly. "Shit," Rain muttered, her eyes narrowing.
As the bike sped away, Bella called out, "Stop!" But the man ignored her pleas. Within seconds, Rain appeared in a blur, slamming the bike to a halt with supernatural strength. She glared at the man with a dangerous intensity. "She told you to stop," Rain said in a tone that left no room for argument. With that, she pulled Bella off the bike with ease. Then, grabbing the man's collar, she flung him off the bike, sending him crashing to the ground with a grunt. Without missing a beat, Rain kicked the bike, sending it skidding away.
Rain turned to Bella, who looked shocked and a little frightened, seeing the predator in Rain's eyes. "We're going. Now," Rain commanded, her voice firm and unyielding. She grabbed Bella's wrist and started walking away, not looking back.
The man groaned on the ground, stunned and wary, realizing he had tangled with something far more dangerous than he could have imagined. Rain's protective aura was palpable, her movements precise and powerful, leaving no doubt that she would do anything to keep Bella safe.
As they walked away, Rain felt the tension in her muscles slowly ease, though adrenaline still coursed through her veins. She led Bella down the sidewalk, her steps purposeful and firm. "What were you thinking?" Rain asked, her voice steady but laced with concern.
"I didn't mean toโ" Bella began, but Rain cut her off.
"Doesn't matter. You can't just approach guys like that. Especially ones like him," Rain replied, glancing back to ensure the man was still on the ground, his friends now surrounding him, their attention focused on Rain and Bella. "Sorry, I thought I knew them," Bella mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper. Rain's heart ached at the sorrow in Bella's tone. She wanted to soothe her sister, but the worry bubbled up inside her.
"That doesn't mean you should put yourself in danger. You know I'll always have your back, but you have to let me know when you need help. You can't keep carrying this burden alone," Rain said, her tone softening as they neared the truck.
Bella nodded, her gaze downcast. Rain opened the passenger door and waited for Bella to climb in before closing it with a firm thud, as if sealing away the lingering danger from the night.
As Rain climbed into the driver's seat, she glanced at Bella, who was staring blankly ahead. "Hey," Rain said gently, "You alright?"
Bella looked over, her eyes glistening in the dim light of the truck's interior. "I just... I don't know what's wrong with me, Rain. I feel so lost." Rain's expression softened further, and she reached over, resting her hand on Bella's. "You're not lost, Bella. You just need some time. It's okay to feel this way. We'll figure it out together. Just don't shut me out."
Bella nodded, squeezing Rain's hand back. "Thanks, Rain. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Rain started the truck, the engine rumbling to life. "You'll never have to find out. Now, let's get some ice cream and talk about something other than zombies and brooding boys, okay?"
Bella chuckled lightly, the tension easing between them. "Okay, that sounds good."

The next morning, Bella drove to Jacob's house with Rain in the passenger seat. In the back of the truck, two bikes lay under a cover. As Bella parked the car, Rain noticed something on her sister's mind. Jacob appeared with a big smile, jogging towards Bella as she stepped out of the car. "Bella!" he grinned, picking her up and making her chuckle.
"Where have you been, loca?" Bella laughed, and Rain noticed the way Jacob looked at Bella, completely forgetting Rain was there.
"Hey there, Jacob." Rain waved, making Jacob turn to face her and smile.
"Hey, rain puddle." He hugged her, and Rain smiled back.
Bella spoke with a small sigh, "I, uh, brought you something." She gestured to the back of the truck. Jacob smiled, "Okay." Bella and Rain removed the cover, revealing two broken bikes.
"It's a little crazy," Bella commented.
"Wow. Scrap metal. You shouldn't have," Jacob responded sarcastically.
"I saved it from the junkyard," Bella nodded before clearing her throat. "I think they'll probably cost more to fix than they're worth. But then I thought that if I had a mechanic friend to help me..." Jacob interjected, "Ah, me. Being the mechanic-type friend?" Rain chuckled, patting his back. "The best of the best, my dear friend."
"That's right," Bella agreed.
"Since when are you into motorcycles?" Jacob asked, a bit puzzled.
Rain sighed, thinking back to the biker guy she had tossed. "Since now," Bella replied. After a short awkward silence, Bella spoke again, "I get it if you think that this is really stupid and reckless." Rain added, "Yep. This is stupid and reckless."
Jacob nodded, then looked at Bella with a grin. "So, when do we start?"
Bella's face brightened. "Um... Now. Please."
Jacob chuckled and began uncovering the bikes. As he went to grab one, Bella warned, "Oh, wait, be careful. Those things are actually really heavy, so..."
Jacob effortlessly picked the bike up and placed it on the ground. Rain playfully whistled. "Why hello, muscles." Jacob chuckled, blushing a little. Bella, amazed, said, "Jake, you're, like, buff. How did that happen? You're, like, 16. I don't get it."
Jacob smiled. "Age is just a number, baby. What are you, like, 40 now?"
Bella scoffed, following Jacob to his workshop. "Feels like that sometimes," she said as they walked off. Rain watched them go, a smile playing on her lips. She called out to Jacob, "Hey, if this whole mechanic thing doesn't work out, you could always try for a bodybuilding contest!"
Jacob laughed, and Bella joined in, the sound echoing through the quiet morning.
