Chapter Fourteen: Joy Amidst The Sorrow
It had taken me a full week to experience the rage left in the wake of Techno's death, but for Quackity, it had taken two days. His casino was gone, reduced to rubble, with no way of restoring it. He was furious; at the good guys for blowing it up, and at himself, for the casino had been a large part of his and Monty's plan.
By now he was sure that Monty had heard about the explosion, since it was in the news everywhere. He had been hoping that his boss somehow had a backup plan, and his prayers redoubled as he and his friends pulled into the parking lot of the Nuclear Power Plant to confront Monty about the whole situation.
Their footsteps echoed in the marble floors of the Plant, traversing the familiar hallways to the room where the Project had been held. As they reached the door, Quackity breathed a sigh of resignation before turning the handle and pushing the door inwards.
"Monty, I know what you're going to say-" Quackity began, but was interrupted by a body crashing against his, wrapping its arms around him.
"QUACKITY!" Monty exclaimed, hugging his friend tightly. "So good to see you at last!"
"Uh- that's not what I expected..." Quackity muttered, gently pushing Monty off of him. His boss wore a grin the likes of which he had never seen before. It wasn't full of malice or evil like it normally was, but rather of joy and ecstasy. This filled him with hope. "What's the occasion? Why are you so happy after what happened to Las Nevadas?"
"Oh that?" Monty scoffed. "It's not a big deal, I have the means and the money to get you another casino in the same spot. But that doesn't matter!" He seemed to be quivering with happiness. "Do you remember those letters I told you about a while ago? The ones for Waylon?"
"Yeah..." Quackity replied slowly. "He ended up finding them, right?"
"He did, yes!" Monty exclaimed. "He confronted me about it, and I was so nervous that he wasn't going to reciprocate my feelings towards him, but he told me that he felt the same way towards me!"
"Really?!" Comet gasped. "That's amazing, Monty!"
"Congratulations, guys!" Mabel shouted in joy. "I always knew you guys would make a cute couple!"
"Thank you, thank you." Monty took a deep breath, attempting to calm himself. "I'm sorry, I was just so happy to tell you guys that me and Waylon are now boyfriends."
"I'm very happy for you both." Quackity told him. "I'm sure you-know-who down in you-know-where will be pleased to hear that. She's been shopping you guys ever since she met you."
Monty nodded. "I'll tell her as soon as we get a chance to speak again. Her dramatic reveal should be coming up soon, I hope. But anyways, we need to get down to business."
"Right." Quackity cleared his throat, rage gleaming in his eyes. "As you know, Wonder and her army broke into my casino, attacked me and my friends, and blew up Las Nevadas, a critical part of our plan to take over the world."
"I'm assuming you want revenge," Monty said.
"Correct." Quackity replied through gritted teeth. "When I get my goddamn hands on Wonder again, I'm going to make her suffer. She'll rue the day that she thought that blowing up my casino was a good idea when I slaughter her in every way humanly possible. We need to exact our revenge, NOW!"
"It wasn't her."
Quackity paused at the voice from behind him, and turned to face the speaker; Ballora, who looked somewhat uneasy upon hearing his words.
"What was that?" he asked. Ballora seemed to freeze, as if she had unintentionally spoken, before responding.
"I didn't see her near the bomb when it had been activated," she informed him. "In the confusion, anyone could've activated it. It might not have been Wonder."
Quackity stared at her disbelievingly. "Of COURSE it was her!" he shouted. "She's the only one who hates me enough to do it! When we were all fighting together, she must've taken that to her advantage and pressed the button, acting just as worried as the rest of us!"
Quackity stepped forward, looking her up and down. "What makes you say it wasn't her, eh? Have you grown soft towards her, Ballora? Are you defending her from me?"
"No, no!" she protested quickly. "I'm just saying that we should review all of our options here, instead of assuming that it was her."
"Are you sure?" Quackity leaned forward, his gaze seeming to pierce her soul. "Is there something you're not telling me?"
Ballora hesitated for a fraction of a second before replying. "No, nothing."
Doubt arose in Quackity's mind. He didn't completely trust Ballora after she had failed him twice before. He felt as though there was something that she was hiding, and he was determined to get to the bottom of it, no matter what it takes. But first, he had to have his revenge.
"Soon..." he murmured, turning away from Ballora and his friends. "Soon the day of reckoning will reach you, Wonder. And when it does, I'll be waiting."
