Chapter Four: Another Tragic Backstory
"As you all know," White began. "I am a bartender, serving at Las Nevadas for Quackity along with Vision, but I wasn't always this way. I had a job before that at SWORD, also known as Sentient Weapons Observation and Response Division."
"What was that place used for?" I asked.
"It's mostly in the name." White explained. "It was a big division of the government, used for tracking weapons and responding to threats, mostly to stop any illegal usage of them. Director Tyler Hayward ran most of it. He was my boss, and we were pretty close friends during the time I was there."
I leaned forward, intrigued by this. "You were friends?" I prodded. "Did you guys fall out or something?"
White looked at me. "Something like that," he said.
"I had begun to notice that SWORD was being funded by something, or someone, but I wasn't exactly sure who the benefactor was. We were being supplied with mass amounts of energy and money, which helped us out a lot, but no one knew who was giving us these resources. I began to grow suspicious when I asked Director Tyler Hayward about these things, for he refused to tell me, or anyone else for that matter."
"Did you find out who, or what, it was?" Techno asked.
"I immediately began investigating into who it could be after I asked him. A few friends of mine assisted me, but none of them found anything. I, however, came close one day, very close. Some cars pulled up to SWORD one day that I didn't recognize, and a few men got out. They spoke with the receptionist about meeting with Hayward, concerning the energy supply, and I immediately began to eavesdrop on their conversation. Before any names were mentioned, however, Hayward caught me. I told him everything that I was doing, and he got pissed. After we shouted at one another for quite some time, he fired me."
A sad and slightly hurt look passed over White's piercing blue eyes.
"Oh dear..." I exclaimed softly.
"I'm so sorry that he did that to you," Glitch said solemnly. "That's not fair at all."
"Do you think that he was getting his money illegally?" Techno asked. "Or by some other illicit act?"
"Of course I do," White replied. "Why else would be have been so secretive about it?"
A look of rage passed over Techno's face, and he slammed his fist on the table, causing my plate of waffles and popcorn to bounce.
"If there's anything I hate more than government," he fumed. "it's a government with a corrupt leader."
"Hayward sounds like a real asshole," JD said. "We should expose him for the fraud he is."
"White has proof, he saw those people." Glitch noted. "What's stopping us from going down to SWORD and exposing him right now?"
"Our pledge to do absolutely nothing," I told them. "We're supposed to show that prophecy who's boss! We can't kick the mayor of The Big City out of office right now!"
"The prophecy hadn't forewarned us of these events," Thor spoke up. "If we go now, we wouldn't be changing anything."
"That is true," Techno added.
I looked around at my friends, who were all staring at me, silently beseeching me to join them in their quest to overthrow the mayor of The Big City. An exaggerated sigh escaped me as I finally gave in.
"Fine, I guess we'll go do this." I said. "But if one of you dies, just remember that I tried to stop you."
A unanimous cheer filled the room at my words, and my friends all stood up.
"Well then, what are we waiting for?" JD asked. "Let's go expose the mayor as a fraud!"
