Chapter Fourteen: The Choice
The moment the door slid shut behind me as I entered the train compartment, I felt as though my fate was sealed, and I was filled with a sense of unease as I wondered if I had made the right choice. Monty's ominous presence behind me wasn't helping with my nerves whatsoever, but I forced myself to remain calm as I slowly moved forward. The compartment was filled with shadowy figures, blurred outlines of people that I felt that I should recognize, but couldn't. The only features that I could see on them were their eyes, which seemed to glow with a hatred for every fiber of my being...for some reason.
Three of the figures sat together on a seat, glaring up at me. The figure on the left had wide, staring yellow eyes with mahogany pupils; malice and rage swirled in the purple eyes of the one on the right. But something intrigued me about the silhouette in the center; its eyes were fuschia, and they seemed to sparkle like gems. I felt compelled to draw nearer to this figure, and a sense of deja vu washed over me.
A hand on my shoulder pulled me from my thoughts, and I spun around. Beside Monty stood another blurred being, who was just as tall as me. Large, wing-like masses extended from either side of its back, and it seemed to be holding a large, yet thin, book under one arm.
"Tickets, please." it said in a distorted voice. My hand reached into my pocket, seemingly on autopilot, and pulled out a small slip of paper that I didn't know was there before. Its piercing, bluish-grey eyes flashed as it took the ticket from me, putting it in its pocket, before dissolving into thin air. I turned to Monty.
"Wh-What did I do?" I asked him. He smiled before chuckling to himself, shaking his head. Needles of panic began to stab at what little courage I could muster.
"Sit down." he ordered, sliding into a nearby seat and gesturing to the one opposite him, which I sat upon hesitantly. I felt the train rock slightly as it began to move, and my eyes darted to the window. A group of beings on the platform were performing strange movements around a hazy light source, reminding me vaguely of a meme I had seen before. They moved out of sight before I could recall it, however.
"The train is a metaphor." Monty said simply, jolting me back to reality- or whatever this place was. "By boarding it, you have taken yourself on a long and dangerous path that there is no turning back from. There is a plot unfolding before you, a plot that will pull you into the most perilous of adventures, no matter how much you try to resist, and it is being written as we speak."
"A plot?" I asked, both nervous and intrigued. "What sort of plot? Who's plotting the plot?"
"An ancient being, of which frighteningly little is known." Monty explained ominously. "This being is all-knowing, all-seeing, and all-controlling. It is directing everything that is happening around us, and its brain is far more complex than anything we know. It wants us to continue this path, until it is tired."
A chill ran down my spine at his words. "Does it have a name?"
Monty leaned forward, tenting his fingers. "It has no name that we know of, but we have taken to calling it 1059. I suggest doing the same. We don't know what will happen when its true name is spoken."
I nodded slowly. "I see..." I said. Realizing that this may be a good opportunity to find information, I spoke again. "Can you tell me what the project is?"
"Not exactly." Monty told me.
"Damn it!" I swore. "Why not?"
"Suspense," he briefly explained. "But I will tell you this. There is something you want, something you desperately need. It has been taken from you recently, but I have it. It is unbroken, pristine, just as you left it."
"What is it?" I asked. "If it's something I want, why do you have it? Give it back!"
"It won't be as easy as that, Wonder." Monty cackled. "Taking back something you want is rather difficult...especially if it doesn't want you back."
"Huh-?" I exclaimed, before the train jolted, and I snapped back to reality.
"Wonder?"
My neck nearly snapped as I turned towards Techno, who was looking at me with a concerned expression on his face.
"I'd like to get off this train, please." I told him.
"Well you're in luck..." Techno smiled, gesturing to the window outside. The scenery was still, and a train platform lay where trees and greenery had been before.
"We're here."
