Chapter Four: Strange Problems
I stepped outside of Las Nevadas into the night air and inhaled. It was a cool evening, with barely a cloud to be seen. The stars shimmered and glowed against the inky black canvas, and a half-moon stood prominent against the dark sky, illuminating the pavement of the road.
"So, what did you want to tell me?" Techno asked me, following me outside.
"When I was going over to the bathroom, I passed a room, and heard Quackity talking on the phone with someone." I explained. "I was going to pass him, until I heard him talk about 'controlling the world' or something along those lines."
Techno tilted his head. "What does that mean?"
"I have no clue." I replied. "He was talking to someone he referred to as 'Boss', but I also heard him call them 'Monty'. Does the name ring a bell?"
"Let me see..." Techno thought to himself for a moment before speaking again. "The only one I can think of that I know who goes by 'Monty' is Charles Montgomery Burns."
"The owner of that Nuclear Power Plant downtown?" I asked. Techno nodded.
"The very same. He and I have had some...history together."
"Like what?"
"Well, as you know, I'm somewhat of an anarchist," Techno told me. "He tried to run for mayor of The Big City once when he and I were friends, and very nearly succeeded. I may or may not have cost him the election by desecrating his Plant before a safety inspection. Needless to say, he lost that election, and he and I haven't spoken since."
"Wow...so heroic," I sighed dreamily. "The things you'd do to get rid of the government. But I thought Charles was a good guy!"
"He's alright," Techno explained. "I know he likes power, but I doubt he'd be one to think about ruling the entire world. Besides, he gave up on politics when he lost the election. I doubt he's the one Quackity was talking to."
"Damn it." I swore. "I want to know who Quackity works for."
"Did he mention anything else in his phone call?"
"Yes," I nodded. "He said something about a Project, and fools, and taking care of something. The Project is what intrigued me the most, but he didn't go into detail."
"I wonder what he's taking care of..." Techno mused. "Anyways, I think we should go. It's getting pretty late."
"Shall we say goodbye to the gang?" I asked, and Techno nodded.
We headed back inside Las Nevadas, returning quickly to the bar. Quackity was sitting beside Ennard, talking to him, but instantly stopped upon seeing us. Vision and White were conversing as well, before turning to us.
"Hello, guys!" I greeted. "I think that me and Techno are going to be leaving here and going home."
"Leaving?" Quackity asked. "But you got here a few minutes ago!"
"Yeah, sorry, we just need to go." I apologized. Ennard looked at us with a knowing smirk on his face.
"There's a hotel about a block from here," he told us, his expression the equivalent of the all-powerful Lenny face.
Techno and I burst into laughter at the innuendo. "No, no! It's not like that!" I exclaimed. "We were just going home!"
"Sure you were," Vision nodded rather enthusiastically. "Just don't have any children. I'm still regretting having mine."
"Don't let Wanda hear you saying that," White advised.
"Anyways!" I interrupted. "We're leaving! Goodbye guys, we'll see you again soon!"
Me and Techno waved at our friends, and possible traitors, as we left, heading to the car we had come in. I opened the door of the passenger seat and quickly hopped in. Techno slid in beside me, in the driver's seat.
"You know," he said while inserting the keys into the ignition. "We could go to that hotel- HEY!"
I punched him in the arm. "Not tonight, Techno. I gotta go home and watch Squid Game! I'm on episode four, and things are really heating up!"
Techno nodded. "Alright then, let's go."
As we drove off, away from the casino and to our respect homes, neither of us were aware of the car driving close behind us, pursuing our every move. We were being followed...by somebody.
