26. THEY'RE ALL GOING TO DIE

2016 | ARIELS HEAD — "Don't get distracted, Ariel." Wanda persuaded me, while I could faintly hear the splash of water. I was still trapped in this cell, behind the pane of glass that separated me from Wanda. "You can help them, but you have to get out of here first." She tried to instill some courage in me when she noticed the tears in my eyes. "He's in trouble." I said helplessly with a nod. "It's happening right now, isn't it?" I asked, looking for an answer in Wanda's expressionless face.

"Now tell us what you did to our little mermaid?" Agent Ward asked after he what sounded like slapping Steve in his face. Steve sounded out of breath ... as if it had been like that all day. "Well, we just treated her like a human." Steve answered, before they kicked him in his stomach.

"Because of you, our siren's, completely confused and out of her head. She keeps mumbling weird stuff, that doesn't even make any sense." Ward replied."And she was calling for you all the time." He huffed, laughing, while Steve furiously tried to free himself from the grip of the HYDRA agents. But he was stopped when a loud click sounded in his ears. Another agent had his gun pointed at him. "If you even dare to lay a finger on her, you'll bitterly regret it." Steve breathed out, his look increasingly angry, while I was practically trembling with fear for him.

They could pull the trigger on the gun any second ... and he would be dead. My heart was racing like a storm and it was getting harder and harder to breathe. It was like someone was cutting off my oxygen. It felt like drowning. He was in danger and I had to help him. But I just can't break the damn glass! And I had to get out of that state.

In frustration, I fell to my knees and lowered my head to the floor. My tears stopped falling from my cheeks as well. "You can help him, Ariel!" Wanda protested as I collapsed on the floor. "ARIEL!!!!!!" she screamed angrily from behind the window.

I immediately lifted my head and looked up at her. I let out a deep breath, my focusing my attention on her voice, which I tried to be guided by, and then stood up shakily. "BREAK. THE. GLASS!" she shouted one last time, slapping her palms against the glass. "I believe in you, Ariel. You hear me?!" I heard her say. I can do it, I tell myself. If she believes in me, i should too. One last final breath left my mouth as I raised my arms to make my strongest scream at the glass in front of me.

It will shatter.
But I won't.

With a loud Siren scream, the girl woke up from the numbness before Strucker could ram the needle into her throat. the scream was so loud, it broke every tiny light that illuminated the room, it was so loud it even knocked Strucker to the floor, so hard that he probably passed out. It was so loud even blood dripped from his ears.

She got up from the bed as quickly as she could and opened the unlocked door with all her strength. She ran into the corridor and saw the gate in front of her, behind it a large Hydra agent. Immediately she turned around, wanting to go in the other direction, but just like on the other side, another agent approached her.

A look over her shoulder told her that the other agent was still trying to open the gate with the key card, so she took care of the agent on her left first. Just like Natasha and Steve had taught her, she ran towards him as he stuck his arms out towards her. With her forearms she fended off his attempt to grab her and kicked him with the right leg in his stomach, which made him bend down.

With this chance, she tried the trick Natasha had taught her – the widow move. Her right leg wrapped around his head and when he tried to get up she shifted the weight with her other leg and was able to pull him successfully to the ground with a swing.

From the ground, she looked at her next opponent. Without even thinking about breathing, she got ready to attack. Unwise, he ran straight towards her as raised both of her arms in his direction as fast as she could. With a quick but strong scream, she managed to throw him meters away from her, so that he flew to the other end of the corridor.

And until now, she didn't realize how truly strong she actually was.

The two gates at both ends were open, so she took her chance. Ariel ran and ran, knocking out every agent standing in her way. It felt like she knew exactly where to go ... like someone in her head was guiding her the way.

She continued running until she passed Wanda's cell. With her fists she hit the glass pane as hard as she could, drawing the attention to her. She stopped immediately, frantically looking around to make sure no agents were approaching. She was completely out of breath. "YOU HAVE TO GO OUTSIDE. NOW!!! TRUST ME!" Wanda screamed pleadingly as she stood behind the window. Ariel didn't want to leave her behind, but the voice in her head forced her to obey her command, almost like she was still being mind manipulation.

Nodding, she ran as fast as she could and did what she was told. Ariel trusted her. Ariel should probably find some kind of help or distraction. She ran and ran and made it outside to what was now a pitch black night. The wet rain poured down the sky and was supported by the loud thunder. Thunderstorms have always been scary to her, but staying one more minute in that hellhole scared her way more than silly lighting.

Her cold feet touched the stony, wet ground and stood more firmly on the asphalt than ever before.

The girl woke up from her stare. She reminded herself what she was fighting for – her freedom. and to help her friends. She remembered who she was – not HYDRA's Siren, but Ariel.

And the game changed!

The base stood on a small elevation and she could hear the sound of the sea, even if only weakly, with the help of her improved hearing. It's not an underwater base anymore, but it was definitely once again close near the water.

Even though it was dark, the moon was her only source of light, she thought she was able too see the sea. Before Ariel leave the Hydra base, however, two agents in dark uniforms approached her from the front, armed with electric weapons in their hands. Her eyes widened when she saw the electricity from the sticks flashing blue.

A look over her shoulder also told her that another agent was also approaching her from behind. Since this was closest to her, she took care of this one first. The agent raised his right arm and tried to hit her with the baton. She ducked and instead kicked him in his stomach with a loud scream and kick. He fell to the ground in pain and stayed down there.

She turned to the others, the left one swung out and aimed at her head. She ducked again and was able to catch the other agent's right hand before he had a chance to attack her. With her free hand and a scream, she tossed the left agent to the ground. Ariel took care of the last one, twisting his hand backwards so that he screamed in pain. From there she threw the gun out of his hand and did what she did best.

Scream.

Inside of that scream was all of her pent-up anger that she was finally able to release. All these years she's been nothing more than a prisoner, a stupid puppet on strings. They took everything from her, and now they will regret it. She will never let them get away with it.

Successfully she threw this agent to the ground. Now she finally had a chance to get help! Several stairs came towards her and she ran down them as fast as her legs could carry her. Ariel could manage to reach the water and call for help. Clint or Thor for sure would be able to help, she thought. Once she's in the water, Hydra would be history.

The whole nightmare would be over.

The raindrops splashed down on her more and more until she was soaking wet. Once at the bottom of the stairs, she suddenly stopped when she heard footsteps approaching. Ariel stared down and saw black boots combined with dark clothes. Trembling, because she already had an inkling of who was standing in front of her without even looking into his face, her tears came up again.

Her gaze wandered higher to the black vest he was wearing. In spite of the darkness the silver gleamed on his left arm. And before she could even look at his face, all the hope in her eyes disappeared and was replaced by fear once more.

His empty eyes stared at her mercilessly, cutting off her oxygen without ever touching her. "I'm sorry, Siren. But you can't leave." He replied firmly, mind control.

Bucky...

She couldn't attack him. Even if I wanted to. She just couldn't... ever. "Please let me go, we have to help them." she begged with tears and ocean eyes. Her lip trembled, afraid she would hear exactly what she didn't want to hear. The rain was so loud, it made her heart race, almost like a storm or a hurricane. "That's exactly why we have to stay here." He answered, but he Hydra.

No! No! No! No! Please. Bucky, we don't belong here!!! Please wake up!!! She shook her head, more and more tears falling down her cheeks. His gaze grew sadder, as if he knew deep down that he should let her go but couldn't. His lost eyes always on hers. Just as she didn't want to attack him, he couldn't attack her either – his job at HYDRA was to protect Siren no matter what. So he couldn't even hurt her under mind control since they were partners. "Please..." she cried. Not having him on her side hurt her maybe even more than if he broke her bones. "I'm sorry, Siren." he answered firmly.

A painful scream suddenly left her mouth, as she fell to her knees right in front of Bucky. She threatened to fall forward and braced herself with her hands on the wet stone floor in time. The agents hit her in the back with the loaded electric batons and watched her whimper on the floor. "PLEASE! I HAVE TO HELP THEM!" she screamed through tears, but Bucky didn't even blink. "They're all going to die." The pain was nothing compared at the thought of failing them. "My friends..." she cried in the grip of the Hydra agents as she gazed up at the black starless sky before her vision went dark. "They're all going to die..."
