Approximately ninety-seven years after Aegon's conquest, forty-nine years into the old King Jaehaerys reign and thirteen years after the tragic passing of Princess Alyssa Targaryen, the solemn Red Keep was brightened once more by the cry of two precious infants.Rhaenyra and Rhaella Targaryen they were named, said to be the sun peeking through the dark cloud of grief that had hung over the Targaryens for many years. No one was more delighted by the birth of the two girls then their grandfather, Baelon, even if he never had the opportunity to watch them grow past infancy.
By the time they reached their seventh name day, Rhaenyra was soaring through the skies on her dragon, while her sister much preferred the solid ground and its flowered fields.Rhaenyra was sharp witted and bold, the fiery personality of a true dragon, while Rhaella was nurturing, sympathetic and softly spoken, the young girl wouldn't dare hurt a fly. While the dragon twins may be similar in looks, with their ghostly but shining blue eyes and silver locks, they were stark contrasts in personality from the moment they were born.
Rhaenyra despised the idea of marriage, children and only wished to travel the world and fly into battle on her dragon, and she wasn't afraid to make that dream known.Meanwhile, Rhaella foolishly dreamed of experiencing a fairytale-like love, similar to the ones she read about in her stories, of finding her "knight in shining armour" and having plenty of smiling children.Viserys was not one to squash his daughters dreams, even if Rhaella naively thought life was some fairytale, everything exactly as she wished it to be.He admired her eagerness to meet people from across the kingdom, how her cheeks flushed over the smallest compliment, everything that reminded him of Aemma when she was young, everything that Rhaenyra lacked.
Many suitors wished to win over either of the princesses but as they grew older and Rhaenyra made her disdain for marriage abundantly clear, all the attention shifted to Rhaella. She received many expensive gifts and plently of attention, laughed and smiled at the suitors jokes, but only one knight earned the princesses favour at every tourney, danced with her at every feast and stole her first kiss, hidden in a corner of the Red Keeps garden.
Rhaella had been practically glued to the hip of Gwayne Hightower since she was a little girl, the son of her father's hand, Otto Hightower.Being a princess meant a lot of the ladies and men at court only wished to be friendly with Rhaella for their own motive and benefit, so Gwayne quickly became one of her most trusted, and likely only, friend, just as his sister had become for Rhaenyra.Though as far as anybody else in the Red Keep was aware, their friendship didn't go beyond Gwaynes mere polite chivalry and loyalty to the crown.
Many men still tried, and failed, to vie for the Princess Rhaenyra's hand and over time it became more apparent to Rhaella that she was merely a second choice, the "easier" option of the two.Everybody looked to Rhaenyra first, all eyes immediately went to her, only when she did not entertain such attention did they even begin to acknowledge Rhaellas presence.Being the centre of attention never was a goal for Rhaella, never something she wanted or felt she needed, but it was hard not to feel the sting when everybody expected you to be exactly like your sister.Perhaps if such expectations didn't strain their bond, Rhaella would realise her sister felt not so differently to her.Rhaella was everything Rhaenyra wanted to be, and vice versa, the perfect daughter for their father and Princess to realm. She couldn't hate her own sister out of pure jealousy, but it was hard to not grow envious.Rhaella was everything good and kind, her mothers-daughter.She was the perfect, polite and graceful lady that every man expected in a wife, not that Rhaenyra wanted to only be some man's wife or wanted that fate for her sister either, but Rhaenyra couldn't help it when she would watch all the admiring eyes fixed on her sister with a glare, oblivious to the fact that her twin envied her just as much, wanting to be everything that Rhaella disliked about herself.
Jealousy naturally caused a drift between them, yet Rhaella never understood the reason as to why.Envy was normal amongst most sisters, never mind twins, and could cause no real harm.At least, that's what Rhaella told herself every-time she was reminded she was not even the second choice, for the sister she once shared everything with.

Lowkey the most wholesome/happy couple I've ever written (but I make no promises of zero angst or a happy ending)
Ik Gwayne is meant to be older than Alicent but his current age is never mentioned so it was just easier for me to figure out his age (after time jumps) if I made them twins.
Rhaella is lowkey just a more confident (ish) version of Heleana.Really, their both just team no war ๐ โโ๏ธ and only care about their kids (and husbands) being alive and safe ๐ค.
Uhm anyways...enjoy my innocent girl and her sassy knight judging everybody for 50% of the plot and trying (and failing) to protect their peace โผ๏ธ (they rlly just wanna watch from the side lines and talk shit together๐โ)
