The house had large arched windows. Through them light flows through all seasons, gracing the air without favour, illuminating the sweet-toffee browns of the wooden floor. Clutching the hem of my polo t-shirt as I drew in a short breath. I wanted to get selected for the job I had come for. It isn't some corporate job but of a nanny. I watched how the girls came out of the room being rejected. A few of them were disappointed while some cursed the interviewer. I wanted this job, as it was the only job which didn't need educational qualifications. I shifted in my seat, staring at their house. Eye-pleasing.
"Amana."
I stood up quickly, dusting off imaginary dust from my skirtΒ when my name was called. I'm nervous or anxious when I'm about to do something big. This isn't my first interview but I feel as if my heart is tightening. Opening the door of the cabin, I noticed a woman seated on the chair. She wore a white dress with a blue cardigan over her shoulders. She smiled softly before gesturing to me to have a seat.
"Amana?"
"Yes, nice to meet you, ma'am."
I mumbled trying to sound confident but utterly failed in my attempts.
"Would you like to tell me about yourself? Only if you are comfortable." She spoke. Her voice sounded like some music. The way she presented herself reflected her sophisticated self.
"I want to be hired for this job as a nanny because the qualifications do not include any educational qualifications. Though reading has been my hobby since I was ten years old, I did not enjoy reading the history and science books at school."
She nodded her head in response, crossing over her arms against her chest, listening to me keenly. "Do you love reading books?"
"I do. I love reading books, magazines and whatever I find. I feel as if my life is much better within the words and brown pages. It's how I find refuge from reality." I completed but
none of us spoke, what is there to say? She could find me boring or unworthy as everyone feels. Maybe I shouldn't have spoken these words.
"You are honest and I like it."
Those words lifted off some weight from my shoulders. I looked back into her honey brown eyes. "I want some time to think. I will contact you if you are hired."
I mumbled a few things to her before leaving the room. Taking my handbag from the bench I was sitting on before. If I am meant to get the job, I would be hired. I uttered these words to myself. Expectations feed frustration. Everything in this world happens for some reason is what I believe.
"Have you been interviewed?"
"Y-yes. Ma'am said that she would inform me if I have been selected."
He nodded his head gently before getting in the room.
