PROLOGUE

FEBRUARY 14th, 2004

"MOMMA, CAN I go outside?" Kyaire asked his mother standing in the door way of the kitchen. It was going on four o'clock and he knew dusk wasn't that far away since they were still in daylight savings time so the days were shorter and the nights were longer.

He had to be inside before the street lights came on, so he wanted time to play with his friends. His mother Simone was standing in the kitchen preparing to start cooking so that dinner would at least be done by eight o'clock.

Looking back she saw the boy with desperation written all over his face. He had been playing the wii all day, but he quickly became bored, and usually he preferred to be outside with his friends. He had a tendency of doing things he wasn't supposed to be doing, but he was a fresh teenager at fourteen years old just wanting to explore the world.

"Are you gonna be hanging out with that boyβ€”peanut?" She asked curiously. This was simply because she had been scoping out his father for about a month. Kyaire was so embarrassed that his mom had a track record with dating men that she simply stopped telling him about her love life.

Simone personally thought that peanut was a very bad influence to her son. He was half of the reason that kyaire did the things that he did when he wasn't in the house. Yet she never voiced her opinions because she simply didn't want to offend his father Aaron whom she seemed to be interested in.

"Yes ma'am, peanut gone be there and probably zay if he's outside too." Kyaire spoke truthfully using samirs nickname along with including his other friend, addressing his mother correctly in order to gain permission from her.

His friend Samir had gained the nickname peanut simply from his head shape, and he hated it. Lately he had began growing his hair out to cover it so he had corn rows, but he knew it would take years for him to get his hair just how he wanted.

Simone assessed her son wearing his all black durag, baggy jeans and his favorite light blue and white jersey that fell all the way down his long torso topped off with his beat up air forces.

"Don't you know it's Valentine's Day." She questioned, and he stood there staring at her not understanding what that had to do with him. He didn't have a valentines, he was only in the eighth grade.

Seeing he wouldn't reply she smacked her teeth, she planned on introducing her kids to Aaron tonight properly but she would just wait until they came back in. "Alright kyaire, make sure your room cleaned up, check on kyree and you gotta take kamaria." She gave him the conditions and his entire face fell.

"Why kamaria gotta come, she too young for us." He frowned and Simone hooded her eyes into slits looking at the boy.

"She's 13 Kyaire, your 14 and you ain't grown. If you wanna go, take your sister. That's final." She spoke sternly making him drop his head turning around.

"Yes ma'am."

Simone had three kids, kyaire the eldest who was 14, kamaria coming in a close second at 13 then kyree whom was 10. Kyaire and kamaria shared the same father but kyree had a different father.

Kyrees father had been locked up four years ago, and the other twos father was present in their lives but he also had his own family. He was married with another child who was the same age as kamaria, she hated being a ghetto twin. It was embarrassing to her.

So usually she didn't like dealing with her dads side. She always felt so out of place and no one could blame her. Her half sister Sarai got the life she wanted, and more attention from their dad.

"Alright, yes ma'am." He decided to just give in because he wanted to play. If they went to the park kamaria would most likely stray away from them anyway so it wouldn't be that bad.

He walked into the living room seeing his younger sister sitting on the couch with her eyes glued to the tv as she watched what's happening which was a sit com that came out in 76. She mainly watched it for dee who only got three minutes of screen time each episode but it was better than nothing.

"Mari, ma said if I wanna go outside you gotta come with me." He told her watching her eyes snap to his figure. She started shaking her head no making him frown.

"I don't wanna go outside." She told him. She had finally got her tv time after fighting with her ten year old brother so much, so she wasn't hearing it and she wasn't leaving.

"Oh my gosh mari please. I'll get you something from the store." He pleaded with her, at this point time was just passing them by and he knew he had to be back before the street lights that came on a little after seven o'clock. That left him two hours and some time before he would have to be back inside.

This caught her attention almost immediately. "You promise?" She asked him and he gulped knowing he didn't have a penny to his name. Still he nodded his head making her face light up as she smiled showing her teeth.

He rolled his eyes at her, "silver cap kid." He muttered. Everytime the girl smiled the silver cap on her right back tooth was visible and he always bothered her for it. He swore only bad kids had them.

The girl rolled her eyes at him. "Who are we going with? Samir and zayden?" She questioned getting the remote turning the tv off as her older brother nodded at her question easily.

She huffed placing her hands on her hips shifting all her weight on one leg as he looked back at her wondering why she was stalling. He didn't have the time for this. "Alright let me go put my shoes on." She muttered before jogging into her room.

She came back only a few moments later. Her beads clanking together as she ran. The girl was wearing light washed capris that stopped right above her ankle and a pink hello kitty shirt with her favorite pair of Adidas tennis shoes that were slightly shabby. Her hair was braided up into two pigtails with clear and pink beads at the ends.

"I'm ready." She told him making them head to the door, opening it and then opening the screen door shortly after walking out their house.

After walking down the porch and out to the side walk kyaire looked at his younger sister. "I'll race you to the park." He said and all the girl had to hear was race before she took off sprinting towards the park that was down the street from their home. Everyone always hung there, and he knew that's where he was meeting his friends.

Kamaria took the lead since she had a head start, but he eventually caught up and they were neck and neck as the park came in view. Kamaria laughed, pushing harder as she made her self speed up in order to be in the lead.

At the last second her brother passed right passed her running into the park as his air forces made contact with the light brown mulch. He stopped in his spot as mari made her way onto the mulch too, stopping abruptly as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"You cheated." She frowned rolling her eyes as she poked her hip out. Her brother smacked his teeth waving her off starting to look around noticing his two friends were talking to two girls next to the swings.

"Go play, I'm finna go talk to peanut and zayden." He tried to wave his sister off but her lips parted in shock.

"You said you was gonna get me something from the store."

Kyaire knowing he had no money attempted to play it off, "I will mari, I'm finna go talk to them for a lil bit and then we all gonna walk to the store okay?" He assured her.

She gave him a side eye but still believed his words so she dropped her arms with a shrug running towards the playground. He watched her making sure she was okay as she climbed up the monkey bars before swinging across them easily.

Once he saw she was playing, he swagged over to the group of four. "Wassup yall." He greeted them easily , putting his hand out to dap up two of his bestfriends. The he laid eyes on the two girls, "hey, how y'all doin." He flashed a smile watching them wave.

"Nigga what took yo ass so damn long." Zayden said holding a basketball to the side of him making kyaire chuckle lowly.

"My moms, you see she made me bring my sister." He pointed over at the playground noticing she was now talking to a boy who looked around her age, now making a new friend. Everytime she came to the park she made a new friend. Their neighborhood was full of children of all ages.

"Bruh, why would you bring her we was trynna go on the trail today." Samir spoke as he pulled his hoodie on top of his head staring back at his bestfriend.

"I know, that's my fault bruh. I couldn't come unless I brought her so my bad. Y'all can go without me if y'all want ian trippin." He shrugged not wanting to be a buzz kill. Clearly his friends wanted to hang out with the girls and that would be harder than it looked with kamaria tagging along.

"It's cool," zayden assured him.

The group of five talked for a little bit while longer just joking around before the boys decided they wanted to go up the trail. The trail was two miles long, and it was a shortcut to many people, it was also where people did their walks, runs, and bike rides. To the boys, it was the short cut to; the bus stop, Taylor park, and the recreation center.

The girls decided they didn't want to go, because the trail scared them, so they decided to go home. "They scary as hell man." Zayden spoke shaking his head as he stood up from his swing stretching his arms above his head making kyaire and peanut laugh.

"Y'all trynna go to the store before we hit the trail up?" Peanut asked stuffing his hands in his plain black zip up jacket that was beginning to fade from being washed so many times after having it for years.

Kyaire shook his head, "nah yall. I promised my sister I would get her something from the store and if we go she gone want me to get it now. Ion got no money." He revealed shaking his head making zayden smack his teeth.

"Nigga, we don't got no money either. We finna steal." He disclosed lowly looking around seeing all the kids running around. The three boys stirred up a lot of trouble, and stealing from the store was nothing new, they had became pros at it actually.

Their parents knew nothing about how they acted outside of the house but they didn't care. They had been in multiple fights, brawls, they stole, they jacked other kids for their money, they cursed up storms, they snuck out once their parents were asleep, and they snuck around with girls as well.

The only thing they really didn't do was smoke and drink, because there was no way to get that type of stuff. They were dirt broke, and nobody would sell to kids.

"Aight I guess man. We betta not get caught, cause y'all two been getting reckless." Kyaire pointed between peanut and zayden watching both of them smirk. He stood from the swing and once they got their stuff together they walked towards the playground to get his little sister.

"Mari, where you at." He slightly shouted looking around, and a few moments she popped up with the boy she was seen with, his hands were full of mulch showing them he had been carrying it somewhere.

"Stop being so fast bruh, come on we finna go to the store." Peanut spoke before Kyaire could even get any words out. Kamaria mugged the boy, he always threw slugs at her. He and zayden loved to bully her because they were older, only by a year.

"I wasn't even being fast, you just wanna bother me with your big headed self." She rolled her eyes, full of attitude. He looked her up and down with a mug on his face before looking away not bothering to argue at the moment.

Still she didn't protest because she wanted candy from the store so she dusted her hands off on the back of her capris. "Bye Aiden." She waved at the boy she made friends with and he dropped the mulch waving back at her.

They didn't know when would be the next time they would see each other. Usually her friends would knock on the door and ask if she could play, but they didn't know where each other lived. Sometimes she would've change house phone numbers with people but not boys because boys couldn't call the house. So she just hoped to see him again.

After the three boys watched the two say bye, all four of them left the park walking down the side walk as it slowly got darker and darker. Kamaria was in front of them while the three boys walked side by side keeping an eye on her.

"My dad got me a new dirt bike." Peanut muttered making their jaws drop. The three friends loved riding their dirt bikes, when they grew older they wanted to be professionals at it. They knew so many tricks and they had many more to learn.

Kyaire had been begging his mother for a new one because he wanted to upgrade to a bigger one. Kamaria was helping him beg because she wanted to have his old one once he got a new one. She was very much a tomboy, but he needed to get all As and Bs on his report card before he could get a new dirt bike so he had been working hard.

He wished he would've asked a few months ago because Christmas had just passed and he would've for sure got one, but he was so caught up in wanting a gaming system he didn't think to ask. Luckily, income tax season was here so it was possible.

"What color is it?" Zayden asked while Kyaire nodded wanting to know to.

"It's blue and white, it's way bigger than our starter bikes. And that bitch go fast as hell, I'm telling y'all. Y'all gotta upgrade next, we gone be the flyest that eva did it. Watch." Peanut said just envisioning it.

He had a passion for riding dirt bikes. It was like a sport to him, and if it was a sport he wanted to go D1.

They talked more about it until getitng infront of the store. "Mari, watchu want outta here?" Kyaire asked his younger sister making her look up thinking.

"Uhh, I want some Now and Laters, and some sour punchesβ€”the blue raspberry kind though." She made sure to add watching all three of them nod.

"Stay out here lil sis, we gone be right back." Zayden said while peanut nodded agreeing. Her coming in would probably blow their cover.

Peanut looked around, "uhhh...Ayy layβ€”watch lil bit for a second." He looked at the boy sitting there on the bench, referring to mari as lil bit. Lay looked back seeing mari and slowly nodded his head.

The three boys went inside while mari walked to the bench sitting next to lay. Lay had to be around eighteen or nineteen, but she had knew him since she was younger, everybody knew everybody in her city realistically. It wasn't big at all.

"Hey lay." She waved making him smile. Everytime he saw her she had a big smile on her face that just radiated off on him.

"Wassup lil bit. How school?" He questioned watching her shrug.

"Seventh grade is hard. I hate middle school. I can't wait til I'm a high schooler." She expressed making him laugh, looking around at the people passing them by on bikes, or just simply walking.

"Don't be trynna grow up to fast mari. Highschool ain't even fun, and you know the worst part?" He questioned looking back down at her making her shrug her shoulders, "you gotta wake up even earlier than you do in middle school." He said making her gasp.

"You lyin, cross your heart." She said telling him to swear. He crossed his heart with his index finger watching her eyes gradually grow larger. She was so shocked that she didn't know this before. That's as a game changer for sure. She didn't even know she had it easy right now. "Dang I ain't even know. How old are you lay?" She questioned curiously.

"I'm eighteen." He told her truthfully.

She opened her mouth to reply before the bell could be heard meaning someone was going in or out of the store, so she looked back seeing the three people she was with.

She placed her hand on lays shoulder,Β  "it was fun talking to you. I'll see you tomorrow after school. I'll bring you two dollars okay?" She questioned and he cracked a smile nodding his head at her as she got up. "Okay you be safe then." She said before leaving.

"Where's my stuff?"

"Girl shut the hell up and come on." Kyaire mushed her away from in front as they started walking towards the trail. Once they were far enough, they started pulling stuff from the insides on their pockets and jackets making her lips part.

"Ouuu you stole. I'm tellin mama. You a thief. You going to jail." She said as he rolled his eyes handing her candy. She placed a big smile on her face stuffing the now and laters in her pocket , and opening her sour punches.

They laughed at how quick that shut her up as they walked down the side walk. The girl was in her own world as the boys went back to conversing with each other eating what they had stolen from the store.

Kamaria just looked around, her eyes shifting any and everywhere. On each side were bushes and she would always be scared someone or something would pop out and scaring the life out of her so she always stayed close by the boys.

"Watchu and lay was talking about lil bit?" Peanut asked, still remembering how when they walked out he seen them engaging in a conversation with each other, and she had placed her hand on his shoulder before she left letting peanut get a glimpse of the smile on her face. He was just curious as to what they could've been conversing about.

"Nothing," she smacked on her candy before using her finger to move it from between her back teeth. "He was telling me that in high school I gotta wake up earlier that I do in middle school. Did y'all know that?!" She said like it was the most crazy thing in the entire world and all three boys laughed at her shocked state.

"Anyways, I told him I would bring him some money tomorrow. I'm not rich so I only said two dollars but that should be enough for something right?" She asked. Kamaria had an big heart. She would never kick someone while they were down.

She knew the boy was struggling, everybody did.

"Hell yeah, he can take his ass to Burger King or McDonald's or sum and get something off the dollar menu." Kyaire shrugged making her nod knowing he was right. "Where you get two dollars from."

"Uhh I still got a little bit of money from what daddy gave me last time he came and saw us." She revealed making him roll his eyes. As soon as his father gave them money he was spending it on the ice cream truck, or the corner store. The only reason kamaria saved her money is because she spent everybody else's.

She hated spending her own money, so if she didn't have to she wouldn't.

Zayden went to speak before a police siren interrupted them, and all four of them snapped their heads behind them seeing the police were trying to get their attention.

"Ohhh shit." Zayden muttered as they all stood there, almost frozen. The police car doors opened and two officers hopped out. "Y'all think they know we stole?" Zayden asked fear written all over his face.

They could've been getting stopped for a heap of reasons, as mentioned earlier they liked to steal from stores, and rob people as well. Who was to say all that wasn't catching up with them.

"Fuck this I'm running." Zayden said before turning around sprinting off. It was like his heavy footsteps broke the rest of them from their trance as kyaire and peanut started sprinting away to, not realizing kamaria was stuck in place.

She was terrified. Her fear of the police branched off from something far more serious than a thirteen year old should've had to witness. Police brutality.

Peanut paused looking back to see how far back she was, "Lil bit come on!" He yelled from his spot seeing the officers had began running.

They were at a distance because they had to stop their police car at a certain point that was blocked off for cars since cars couldn't go on the trail. Yet, they were getting closer by the second.

Peanut smacked his teeth, running back towards the girl picking her up from the ground beginning to run again with her clinging to his back.

Despite him having extra weight he sprinted as fast as he could with the girl on his back seeing his two friends far a head of him, kyaire looked back every once in a while to make sure his sister and bestfriend were cool.

He just couldn't stop though, in fear of being caught.

Peanuts mind was racing, he knew the second he let them get close enough they would tase one of them, or worse, start shooting. With mari on his back he didn't want to take that chance, because she would be like a shield for him, and though that was beneficial for him she was the youngest out of all of them and he didn't want her to get hurt no matter how much they bickered.

Making a decision he busted a left going into the nice neighborhood off to the side of the trail even though there was still at least a mile left of the trail that he could've ran. He ran down the street as fast as he could, gripping onto kamaria feeling her begin to slip.

Turning right he found himself in an unfamiliar environment, as he ran down the alley. "Here, shhh." He shushed to keep the girl calm as he stopped and sat her down seeing the tears streaming down her face. "Don't cry. Sit right there." He pointed to the secluded spot next to a big dumpster.

She did as told, as he started using the containers and boxers around the area they were in to block her in so she couldn't been seen he would rather her hide than run. His heart pounded against his chest hearing the foot steps approach closer.

He moved quicker making sure she wasn't visible to the human eye as she silently cried with her hands covering her face and her stomach churned feeling something in her gut was about to happen.

Peanut backed up and jogged only a few steps purposefully. "Stop!" One of the two officers came around the corner seeing he was still running, but this time he stopped abruptly in his spot. If he would've kept running it would've been a worse outcome, and he was tired, almost about to pass out.

Peanut clenched his jaw turning around.

"Put your hands up!" The officer yelled holding his gun in his hands pointing it at him. Kamaria closed her eyes shaking her head since she could hear everything. Samir had been caught.

He slowly raised his hands, his chest heaving not daring to look where he had hid kamaria in fear that he would give away that she was right there.

"Where is that girl you had with you."

"I don't know watchu talkin about sir." He lied effortlessly, gulping with his hands in the air.

The officer inched closer, "now, lock your fingers behind your head." He instructed.

Kamaria sat there listening, as tears uncontrollably fell from her eyes. She wished she could see what was going on.

She gulped deeply, before a gunshot went off and she heard a loud thud as she flinched starting to cry harder praying that he hadn't just been shot.

"Shit. I need back up in the alley off of baker avenue, suspect has been shot." She heard him speak into the walkie and she couldn't hold it anymore, silently crying as hard as she could.

Everything went so wrong so fast.
