THE DEEP ATTRACTION
KAMARIA AND SAMIR
SATURDAY 11 :13am
1 MONTH LATER
KAMARIA CROSSED HER ankles sitting on the couch comfortably. She had a clear plastic bowl of mixed fruit sitting on her lap, placing a strawberry in her mouth.
She was a little past seven months pregnant now, and today was her baby shower. She didn't expect it to be super nice under such short notice, but it was fine with her.
She was happy that everybody was on board with her having the baby, she couldn't be happier about that.
Currently though, she was sitting in a therapy office while waiting on her older sister to come in. Bianca and Simone had convinced her to go with Sarai, since they had gone and it did wonders for them.
They assured her that it would at least make her feel better to know they tried to mend their relationship. Friends could come and go, but they would always be sisters.
It took a week of convincing, but kamaria agreed. She was too old to be bickering with her sister—but Sarai just had some deep-rooted issues that she always wanted to put the blame on someone else for. She hated it.
Sarai had no reason to hate her, if anything it should've been the other way around. Sarai felt the same way though. Kamaria had no reason to have an issue with her—she should've been the one giving the cold shoulder.
"I'm sorry, I'm sure she'll be here soon." Kamaria smiled at the middle-aged lady sitting in front of her in her designated chair. Sarai happened to be running a little late, but kamaria had occupied herself with her fruit so she wasn't stressing it.
Her and her sister would never be bestfriends, but she would like it if they could be cordial. They were grown adults now, and she felt it was childish. Especially since they were both bringing life into the world.
She could imagine their kids playing together and what not.
"It's fine." She smiled. This was the same therapist their mothers had attended, so by default she knew a little background about them. Like how Sarai was conceived around the same time as kamaria and was only two months older.
Eventually a knock could be heard, and Dr. Graves spoke telling her she could come in. Sarai entered, and she was wearing a yellow dress that hugged her body. Kamaria could admit she looked really pretty, and yellow looked great on her.
Now, she could see her stomach a little better from the last time they saw each other, and there was no doubt she was pregnant. "My bad." Sarai spoke, referring to being late. She was just trying to kill time, so they didn't have to be there a full hour.
"It's fine—excuse me but would you mind if I took your phone. It's a phone free zone." Dr graves spoke up since Sarai's face was buried in her phone screen.
Sarai paused. She wanted to say no but gave in handing her phone and taking a seat next to her sister since it was the only available spot.
"Nice to meet you Sarai, I'm Dr. Graves and I've already met your sister, kamaria. Just like I told her, you can call me Melinda." She smiled nicely.
"Hello Melinda, nice to meet you." She forced out.
Kamaria raised her eyebrows, biting a pineapple.
"Are you expecting too?" She questioned Sarai, making her nod slowly.
"So you announced it finally?" Kamaria spoke up, and Sarai turned her head to look at her sister.
"No, I didn't. I planned on doing so today." She stated matter of factly, but kamarias face dropped.
"Wha—at my baby shower?" She asked incredulously. She knew her and her sister didn't get along, but that was even low for her.
"Is that an issue?"
Kamaria was lost for words, she looked at Sarai realizing she didn't care how she felt. "I mean it's not ideal, my baby shower is supposed to be about my baby." She didn't want to sound selfish but that was the truth.
"You didn't care when you announced your pregnancy the day I was going to." Sarai shot back with a frown. She swore kamaria always played victim, and it was getting really old. She was going to announce she was pregnant with her little boy, and that was final.
"Sarai, if we're being real, I didn't announce anything, I walked through the front door." Kamaria pointed out, and Sarai closed her eyes.
"See, this is what I mean. You always play victim or play dumb." She shook her head.
"You're confusing me at this point. Is this about my baby or what?" She was very confused.
She thought that anyone would feel the way she did. That was like asking someone to marry you at someone else's wedding. You just don't do it and especially without permission.
"Sarai, do you care to explain what you mean." Melinda asked, studying the two.
"Ever since we have been little kids, she always been a little spoiled brat. Anything she wants she gets, no matter who wants it first, or anything like that and I'm sick of it. She ruins everything for me. I can never have one thing to myself. I couldn't even announce my pregnancy the day I wanted because she beat me to it." Sarai expressed.
"How many times do I have to say, why would you even plan to do it the day everybody got together to see me for when I came home from my third year of college?" She questioned and Sarai remained quiet.
"Sarai, everything I get, you get as well so I don't know why you're trying to build this narrative. Your problem is you always have ill intentions, so things never go the way you want it to. And that's what makes me sick, and then when you want to point fingers, I'm the person you do it to." She frowned.
"That's not true!"
"Yes, it is! You never want to take accountability Sarai. When we were little girls, anything dad got you, he got me the same thing I admit that. But that's not my fault, that's his guilt for what he did to my mother. It had nothing to do with us." She felt herself becoming emotional.
She was tired of her sister putting everything on her.
"Girl fuck when we were kids! How about when we were teenagers and dad started getting you shit, and I never got anything." She accused.
"Sari please, with the dumb act. If I ever got something you didn't it was solely because of my grades. I worked my fucking ass off in school and me and you both know that. You barely fucking passed, and I don't mean to throw it in your face, but you leave me no choice." She swallowed.
"If anything, I should be jealous of you. You grew up in a two-parent home and they loved each other up until a few years ago, and as much as I don't want to admit it, they showered you with so much love and care. Anything you want, you got. you wanted to do it? You did. Your hair was always done, and you were an only child. You always had more friends than me, better clothes, jewelry—you name it. I was the one who had to make the best out of what I had! I worked my ass off no matter how much you deny it, and everything I have now, I deserve, fuck what you say."
She didn't think this stress was good for her baby.
"You've been breaking my heart since we were little girls. It didn't matter if it was you bullying me with your friends, taking my boyfriend, or not believing me when I was this close to getting raped." She pinched her fingers to demonstrate.
"Don't fucking talk about zion! He's dead, and he wasn't about to rape you. You're a liar, and it's evil that you think it's okay to lie about something like that just because he didn't want you back. He didn't deserve what happened to him." Sarai felt her skin burning in anger. She couldn't believe she had the audacity to carry on with that lie for years.
"What the fuck do I have to lie for! I had a boyfriend—I still do Sarai! It's him who wanted me, and God bless your soul because there's no way you can hate me that much to think I'm lying about being taken advantage of. You're in denial because you brought him there, once again with Ill intentions and once again shit didn't go your fucking way." She spat.
She didn't come here to open that wound, but it was done.
"Ladys please." Melinda tried to stop them for a moment. Things were getting out of hand. She had never seen this before in her life.
"Instead of going around saying that I take anything from you, just admit that your jealous Sarai. The truth will set you free." She looked at her sister. Hurt was an understatement. Sarai had sat there and blamed her for all of her bad luck.
"The fuck do I gotta be jealous of you for? Anything you have I can have too." Sarai was frowning.
"That's the exact same attitude that turns everything you have into shit Sarai."
" I can't believe you; I never thought it could be this much hate in the world. I came here really hoping we could've worked this out. I've been thinking your attitude is a product of our parents' history—but it's you. You need help." Kamaria stood up as fast as she could.
"Stop trying to always one up me. Be happy for what you have, pray for what you dont, push yourself to do better for you and your baby. I'm not in a competition with you and the sooner you realize, the sooner a weight will be lifted off your shoulders." She turned to Melinda. "May I have my phone. Sorry for wasting your time but it's no fixing us." She shook her head.
"Kamaria but I'm sure if—please. I need to go." She cut Melinda off.
She handed her, her phone back and kamaria walked and snatched the door open and slammed it shut. She hurried out of the office, making her way to her car hitting the button to unlock it.
She got in, and closed the door before she let out a huge sigh. It wasn't how she expected it to go, but she felt accomplished for getting how she felt off of her chest. Sarai was used to taking things, and because she didn't hold that power over her anymore, she felt weak.
The quicker let she worked on herself, the quicker her life would be easier. She was making it hard for herself, and kamaria refused to show her any sympathy.
THE BABY SHOWER.
"CLOSE YO EYES mama." Samir was trying to put his hands over the girls eyes but she kept jerking away. She had a huge attitude from her session earlier and she now regretted doing it the day she was supposed to be happy.
She didn't think it would turn out that way, she thought they would've made amends, and it would've been much better. Since it didn't go that way, her mood had been soured.
Samir did everything in his power to cheer her up, but it just wasn't working out. He hoped the baby shower would be enough to make her happy.
"Please stop acting like that. I didn't do shit to you. Blame your sister." He mugged her, and she huffed irritably.
"Okay, they closed, see?" She asked sarcastically with her eyes closed. Samir placed his hands on her shoulders and started pushing her inside.
They had used the rec to do it, and it was more than enough room. Pushing her in, all the guests was were smiling and gushing over the girl. She had the prettiest white dress on, that fell off her shoulders and stopped before her knees. There were rhinestones across the top giving her an elegant look and Her hair was in a pinned-up style, with her pretty diamond hair pieces.
Her lips were glossy, and her skin was glowing. Her baby bump looked so good on her.
"Okay open them." He instructed, and her eyes popped open landing on everybody standing there in awe, before she looked around seeing the Winnie the Pooh themed baby shower.
"This is sooo cute." She was at a loss for words. Almost the entire side of her mother's family was there, and she even recognized people from high school. The decorations were so beautiful, she couldn't believe it.
"Samir picked the theme, we just decorated." Tameeka smiled standing in-front of her. Only God knew how excited she was that kamaria was the one carrying her first grandchild.
"Hey everybody," she smiled waving her hand, slightly nervous. It was like deja vu for samir. It reminded him of his welcome home party five and a half years ago.
Everybody laughed at her, but said Hey back, waving, and some were even taking pictures of her and samir standing there.
"Can I get some food now?" She questioned raising her eyebrows.
Samir laughed but pulled her along. Simone was taking pictures every step they took, and kamaria knew her mother would be aggravating her today.
Samir pulled a seat out for her, and she sat while he walked away to fix her a plate.
"Hey boo," Zariah leaned over giving her friend a side hug.
"Hey girl, you look beautiful." She complimented. Zariah was such a pretty girl truthfully.
"No girl you do, seriously. I was mesmerized when you walked through the door." Zariah replied which was the truth.
"You can say that shit again." Kourtney nodded. Her best friend was taking all the attention, and she couldn't blame her. She looked so good.
Kamaria wanted makeup but opted against it not wanting to sit for it. She still looked amazing.
"Where are my brothers?" She questioned.
"Kyaire is over there with you guys' grandma. Kyree I don't know where he is girl, he'll come around." Kourtney lied waving it off.
The three girls made conversation, for a little, before her grandmother made her way over to give her a few words.
"Aweeee, look at my little grandbaby. You look so beautiful love." She pinched her cheeks.
"Grandma stop itttt, I'm trynna eat." She frowned twirling her fork in the seafood pasta. She hated it normally but being pregnant she loved it. It was weird.
"You don't know how surprised I was when yo momma called and told me you was pregnant girl." She sat next to her.
"I was surprised finding out." Kamaria admitted poking her fork in her macaroni and cheese. She had a plate with everything on it, thanks to Samir, and she was demolishing it.
"Why in the hell did you hide it for six months though girl? I could've been spoiling him by now." She was in her feelings about that.
"Grandma, when I found out I was already four months, and then the other two months I was scared to tell them. I was just going to have the baby first if I'm being real Samir convinced me to tell them." She shrugged.
Kamarias grandmother was only in her mid-fifties because Simone was a teen mother, but kamaria loved it. Being an adult and still having a grandmother was the best, most people weren't that lucky, and she felt for them.
She didn't even speak to her grandma on her dad side, so she really cherished the one she had.
"That's crazy lil bit, you were really gonna hide it until you had him?" She didn't believe her, she had to be joking.
"Yes. Samir forced me!" She muttered.
"Oh girl please, he did the right thing. What do you plan on naming this little baby?" Her granny Shirley questioned.
"Well Samir wanted a junior, but I told him no, but I said since I wanna name our daughter Samaria I was gonna say kamarion but he was like no... we really between names right now. I don't know honestly." She expressed.
"You two are too much. You ain't jada, and he ain't will, and y'all kids ain't gone be named no jaden and Willow." She rolled her eyes.
"Do you wanna bet on that?" Kamaria replied in a snarky manner tilting her head.
"Girl bye I gotta go—is that your sister?" Zariah cut her grandma off, and Kamaria looked up seeing Sarai, wearing the same thing as earlier but with some rhinestone gladiator heels.
Kourtney gasped, "she's pregnant too?" She questioned as everybody whispered.
Kamaria just shook her head; she had nothing to say. She didn't expect any less. "Oh my gosh baby!" Bianca shouted making her way to her daughter, Sarai beamed with all the attention on her. "How far along are you?" She questioned.
"I'm five months." She announced smiling, rubbing her stomach.
Kamaria aggressively stabbed her fork in a meatball. She felt some way about it, but she wasn't going to cry like Sarai did. It was inevitable and bound to come, she just didnt expect her to really do it at her baby shower.
Everybody began telling Sarai congratulations, and it felt amazing to her. She was happy, and maybe it was a good thing that kamaria ruined her announcement. She got an even better one, with more people.
"So, both of my girls are pregnant?" Dexter swore he felt lightheaded. He didn't know if he could handle all this.
"Where the daddy." Zayden coughed loudly to cover up, and Samir shook his head shoving zayden. Sarai shot daggers at him though. She didn't want people to ask questions. Them finding out her baby father was married would not be a good look.
He looked at his girlfriend. He could see that she looked unbothered, like maybe she knew, but he knew he himself felt some type of way. This day was supposed to be about his son in his opinion. It was okay though.
"You okay baby?" Samir reached over to rub her back, and she nodded silently.
Sarai felt victory. She hoped kamaria now knew what it felt like.
"I'll be right back." Samir assured her standing from his seat, but she said nothing. She picked up a piece of fried chicken and continued eating.
Only a few minutes later, the song that was playing changed to take me away by Keisha cole—also known as the song she declared to be theirs.
Her eyes snapped up quickly looking around with her lips twitching into a smile. She wondered where Samir was, she never failed to sing this song to him when it came on.
Sarai was on the other side letting people rub her stomach, so she thought nothing of the music.
Out of no where, Derek and Danny walked in and kamaria gasped seeing their faces.
"Oh my gosh heyyy!" She was excited to see the twins, they looked so grown up. Before she could even finish jayjay and Jabari came in next, followed by tario and Giovanni and kyree was last, recording. It was then she realized they were dancing to the music—like a full routine, and they looked goofy doing it too.
She found herself laughing and giggling at their thought-out dance routine. She was smiling so big, and her cheeks were so puffy she looked like a little kid.
Once again, the attention was averted back to kamaria as the six nineteen-year-olds danced for kamaria in sync.
Eventually jayjay and Derek got closer and grabbed her hands pulling her up, and danced around her in a circle while she stood in the middle confused but laughing.
As the song began to finish, three of them lined up on each side of her like a pathway and revealed Samir right there—on one knee with a ring in his hands.
Her lips parted in shock as she placed her hand over her heart while everybody gasped and whispered. Kamaria almost felt like fainting and it wasn't real.
Samir opened his mouth to give the speech he had been practicing for two weeks but Kamaria beat him to it. "Oh my gosh , yes!" She squealed pulling him up to wrap her arms around his slim body.
He just had to laugh and drop his head. He was scared she would say it was way to early for them, and he had been a ball of nerves all day, but he felt so much relief.
"He didn't even ask!" Kyree stated holding the camera next to kyaire.
"Yes he did shut up!" She waved him off with tears flowing down her face.
She turned around and pulled the six boys in a group hug. "I missed y'all, thank y'all so much." She stated feeling very emotional. It was so surreal.
"I missed you too baby mama." Derek spoke making everybody around them laugh. "You know it take a mature man to help his girlfriend man propose to her. I deserve a kiss." He smiled sweetly.
She laughed through her tears wiping them away. Then she kissed the younger boy on his cheek making him blush. She looked at them. "Y'all are grown now what the hell." It was so bittersweet. "Jayjay look at you." She frowned pulling him into a hug.
She would never tell anyone but he was her favorite.
"My bestie getting marrieddddd! I'm so excited!" Kourtney was beaming.
"Ahhhhhh!" Kamaria matched her energy.
It was crazy how Samir could flip her mood in an instant.
That was why she loved him though.
