KAMARIA WOODS
MARCH 8th, 2008.
SATURDAYย 3:42 pm
KAMARIA RAN HER fingers through her hair, admiring herself in tamikas guest bathroom.
It was almost as if she had stars in her eyes as she eyed her new look. Her mom had finally let her get honey blond highlights, and a silk press and she looked so good.
Her mom only settled for that, and that was it. She originally wanted to dye her hair, but her mother was completely against it, not wanting her to make a mistake.
She was scared she would kill her beautiful hair if it wasn't taken care of. Her curls were amazing, shiny, bouncy and very healthy. She didn't want her to make a mistake, so she agreed to a few high lights and her annual silk press. And if kamarias mind hadn't changed in a year then dying it would be fine.
"He's here!" Tamika yelled from the living room, looking through the blinds.
Kamaria looked back for a moment, fixing her messy ponytail. She had a few loose strands falling from the ponytail, but she liked the messy look especially with straight hair.
Once she rubbed her glossy lips together, she turned the bathroom light off and made her way out and down the hall to the living room.
She walked to the door, and pulled it open just in time for Samir to be walking up the side walk towards the porch steps. "Did you get it!?" She questioned him excitedly.
He felt his heart fluttering at the sight of her being so exited for him. She was probably more happy than he was, and that was saying a lot.
"You changed yo hair." He acknowledged, his eyes shifting all over her face and how the highlights brought out her pretty skin color.
"Yes, but did you get it!" She continued, wanting to converse about her hair after she got the news or not.
Instead of saying anything he reached in his pocket pulling it out, and she gasped at the sight of it.
Feeling elated, the girl jumped from the second porch step into his arms, and she could feel his chest vibrating from him chuckling at her reaction.
"Now what if ian catch you." He asked her rhetorically letting her wrap her legs around his torso.
"I'm so proud, now you can literally drive me anywhere I want." Her face was in the crook of his neck, the grin never leaving her face.
"Tell me how yo ass feel den." He muttered, hoisting her body up so that she wouldn't fall, and she pulled her head back pecking him on the lips.
"Happy birthday boo," she was smiling softly staring back at him. "I love you." She continued laying her forehead on his chest.
"Thank you, and I love you too." he gave her another kiss and she finally jumped down giving him the chance to reach his hand up to touch her hair. "This look pretty mama." He complimented her.
"You look so cute in this." They were basically exchanging compliments as she eyed the picture on his driver's license.
"I didn't even smile." He replied throwing his arm around her shoulders, as they both made their way up the steps going into the house.
"You still look really cute though." She claimed.
"Did you pass?" Tamika asked as soon as they walked through the door because she wanted them to have their moment first.
"Yesss!" Kamaria found herself answering for him and he just smiled looking away. He swore they were more ecstatic than he was.
Tamika instantly began celebrating at another huge milestone that Samir had hit in the last three months. She was so proud of him, and he was doing nothing but excelling.
"I'm so happy, first you did good on your SAT scores, got off probation, and now you a legal adult and can drive." The more she spoke the more emotional she felt. It was like he was growing so fast in her eyes.
It was probably because he had missed out on so much of his teenage life, but he really got out and turned his entire life around and that he deserved a major applaud for. She was so proud that he managed to stay out of as much trouble as he could, he didn't violate parole, and he took his academics seriously.
If you asked him though, it was all kamaria.
"I swear y'all more excited then me." He acknowledged, his eyes shifting between both of their faces.
"Well then get more excited, duh." Kamaria snaked her head causing her ponytail to shake. Samir didn't think he actually realized how long her hair was because it was always curled up.
"Okay wait I have a surprise." Tamika looked like she was remembering, before rushing off to the kitchen.
Samir looked down to lock eyes with his girlfriend, "you know what it is?" He asked her because it seemed as if the two were always cooking up something together.
Especially with the past few months since they had been in a relationship.
"Duh, I'm not telling you." She answered slickly and he mugged her for a total of two seconds before pulling her arm yanking her body into his.
"I'll put yo ass inna head lock right now keep talkin slick," he wrapped his arm around her neck squeezing but not to tightly. The girl broke out into a fit of giggles. "So who you talkin to?" He pondered playfully.
"Stop Samir you gon mess up my hair!" She screeched with the side of her face pressed up against his chest hardly.
Finally he let her go, and stole a kiss on her cheek while she mugged him moving the messy pieces she left out of her ponytail from out of her face.
"Okay, I got it." Tamika came out with a small gift box. It was so tiny, he couldn't even began to guess what it was. His first thought was a watch because the box could fit in the palm of his hand. "Here open."
He gently took the box letting his girlfriend stand off beside him. Taking the top off, his eyes widened momentarily before his head shot up at the sight of a car key. "Ion got time for games." He was in denial placing the lid back on top.
"What you mean?" Tamikas face dropped feeling bitter at his reaction.
"I told you ion want you to get my first car cause you gone trynna have me ride around in a bucket. I'm to fly to be a hoopty." He was trying not to laugh at the offense on her face.
"It's not even a bucket! You didn't even look at the key to see what kind of car it is." She stated placing her hands on her hips.
"Exactly, and you not finna give her too much of nothing because the car was nice and thoughtful. So open it back up, go in that backyard and look happy." Kamaria defended her, looking him up and down daring him to object.
"This why I don't like when y'all together." He rolled his eyes trying not to show how curious he actually was now to see the car he had gotten.
Opening the box again, he pulled it out making his way to the clear glass sliding door that led to the back. "Hold on, this nice." He was suppressing his smile so that he wouldn't satisfy them.
"We know cause I picked it out!" Kamaria jumped on his back and he caught her placing his palms under under her thighs. They stared at the brand new Lexus in black and Tamika felt proud.
The moment the he started studying for his drivers tests she started looking into a car to get him for his eighteenth birthday feeling like he deserved it for all the hard work he had been putting in.
Kamaria and Samir studied day and night together, but because their differences in age kamaria had to take a permit test and she would have to have her permit for a year until she could get her license. Samir was now eighteen which meant he didn't need a permit, and if he passed his drivers test he could skip that stage.
So now kamaria had her permit, and he had his licenseโand a brand new car which would give him all the freedom in the world, especially now that he didn't have a curfew.
"Thank you momma, I appreciate it foreal." He kept kamaria steady on his back opening his free arm to pull her into a hug, kissing her on the cheek.
"You welcome, but if you wreck this shit it's on you. And you gotta go half on the car payments for the next year until the rest is paid off." She told him as she pulled away.
"I'm not gone wreck, I'm certified." He hoisted kamaria up feeling her slipping slightly. "But I got you wit da payments." He promised thanking the lord his job paid well.
"Good." She nodded her head once.
"So where you wanna go?" He looked over his shoulder at kamaria.
"Where ever you wanna go, it's yo birthday." She spoke softly into his ear, resting her chin on his shoulder.
"Okay," he nodded slightly. Tamika stood back while he walked her around to the passenger side , pulling the door open. "Hmm mama." He uttered softly helping her get down so she could get in the car.
Once she got inside, he closed the door for her. "What time are y'all gonne get back?" She questioned. It was only going on four o'clock pm, but him now having a car and not having to be inside by 11โalong with being eighteen, he had all the freedom in the world.
"Not late, I promise." He swore, and he was serious. Just because he could didn't mean he would, only because he didn't want to take a mile.
"Okay, keep in contact !" She shouted before backing into the house sliding the door back closed.
ONE HOUR LATER.
BOTH KAMARIA AND Samir were sitting in the front seat of his car, after he had gotten a feel for the way it drove.
Samir had actually only practiced real driving in his mothers' and kyaires car, almost everyday for the past two months.
In kamarias lap, was a ice cream birthday cake from cold stone creamery while both of them sat with forks in their hands eating the big cake all by their self without a care in the world.
She knew he liked ice cream cake, but he had never tried one from cold stone. Only publix, so she decided to have him go a step up.
He couldn't lie he definitely was enjoying it, and they were eating the whole thing like it wasn't just two of them. They both ate like they were bigger then they actually were.
"Do you like this one, or you think we should've just got regular vanilla." Kamaria questioned licking the ice cream off of her lips. It was a known fact that kamaria hated chocolate cake, but the marble ice cream cakeโwhich was a mixture of vanilla and chocolateโwas her favorite from cold stone, the chocolate didn't even taste like chocolate to her.
"You really gone ask me that after we demolished all the cake. Should've asked after I took the first bite or some shit."ย He shook his head with a smirk playing in his face. He watched her take more scoops on her plastic fork, "bruhhh stop you gone eat it all. It's my birthday." He found himself using that against her as he transferred the cake onto his lap from hers.
Her jaw dropped as he ate the remains of the ice cream cake, and she just wanted him to remember this because when it was her birthday in June he would be sorry.
"Yeah, that shit was good." He placed the fork in the now empty cake box, and she placed hers inside it too. He flipped the lid back on, looked over at her.
"You ready to go in now." He asked her curiously since they had finally finished the cake.
"Of course," she muttered rubbing her lips together as she snapped close her purse. They were sitting outside of celebration station after making it to the country side area, a couple cities over.
The two made their way out of the car, and he pushed the button on his key fob to lock the doors.
It felt so foreign having to get his license and his own first car all in one day , while also becoming legal. It was even better because he had spent his entire day so far with kamaria.
He grabbed her hand interlocking their fingers. They decided to go to the arcade portion, but Samir made it sure that they would get a chance to ride the go karts before they left too.
Ten minutes later, Samir had the biggest mug kamaria had ever seen and she thought it was hilarious.
"You really mad that I paid for you?" She was almost distraught at the reason for his stink attitude. "It's your birthday why you can't get spoiled." She asked rhetorically.
"Don't care." He muttered attempting to avoid looking at her as they walked around. "I wanna do this." He stated pointing at the game where they had to get in and utilize the guns to shoot and giant spiders in a Forrest. It was a visual game.
"You are such a brat. That's my job." She rolled her eyes, but let go of his hand and slid inside. He got in after her and they sat next to each other closing the curtain. After putting in the tokens they began playing.
They played a series of games, gaining tickets from each one to use at the end, stuffing them in the clear bags. Samir lost his attitude along the way, because he was actually having fun, especially when the two played air hockey.
He lost, because kamaria was very competitive and he felt like she was trying to take his fingers off. She just really loved air hockey, and had ever since she was a kid. He could vividly remember that, so he let it slide.
Then they played laser tag up stairs, played bumper boats which they had a lot of fun with , but kamaria was scared she was going to get her hair wet. Samir attempted to splash water on her so many times that once they finished she refused to get on the again.
And for the finale, they did the go karts like they wanted all along. They raced, and had a lot of fun which kamaria knew he would , and she was proud of herself for making sure he indeed enjoy himself.
They stayed all the way until it was a half hour until closing time, so it was around ten thirty.
"I had so much fun in the go karts. That's was my favorite." Kamaria muttered lowly, rubbing her eyes since she was kind of sleepy. In her free hand she was holding the stuffed koala that Samir had got her with his ticket.
"I liked the bumper boats but you was being a fucking cry baby bout yo hair." He teased her. She rolled her eyes, while he opened the door for her.
"Because this is a fresh silk press! You was finna waste my money for it to not even been a full 24 hours." She frowned plopping in the passenger seat.
"I could've paid for it, but still." He shrugged closing the door and rounding the car. Once he pulled the door and got in, he turned his head seeing the girl squishing her koala.
"This is our baby now." She spoke lowly. "Her name is Samaria."
He let a laugh slip from his lips and then pursed them together to stop quickly. "You ready to go home, or you want something to eat." He tried to switch the subject before she got mad at him for laughing.
"I want something to eat but I don't wanna go home." She frowned looking at him crazy, "who you trynna go see in yo new car because you never make me go home." She was blinking rapidly.
He stared back at her with his lips parted, "are you serious right now..." he trailed off hoping she was playing with him. "You be making no sense sometimes." He shook his head.
"Who don't? I got street sense, book sense, common sense. Shit, how many more senses do I need?" She never took her eyes off of him, and he bursted into laughter.
Their conversation was interrupted when Samirs phone started ringing, and they both shared matching facial expressions as the locked eyes. They already knew it was one of their parents.
He glanced at it, before looking back at her. "It's yo mama." He stated , and she frowned looking out the window. She knew that meant she was probably about to make her come home.
"Don't answer !" She whispered, and he looked at her as if she was crazy.
"She will kill me." He kept a stoic expression on his face. He swore kamaria loved to test her mother, but he wouldn't be a part of that.
"Fine, but if she start pressing you, yell 'Fire!' And hang up." Kamaria suggested, and Samir had to hold back his smirk. She was really a character, and he couldn't get over that.
Answering the phone he brought it up to his ear. "Hello?" He questioned.
"Slim."
"Yes ma'am." He tucked his lips in.
"First off happy birthday." She started, "and is lil bit still with you?" She questioned. He glanced at her for a split second.
"Thank you, and yes ma'am she right here." He spoke honestly.
"Okay, can you hand her the phone please?" She questioned and he nodded even though she couldn't see him.
"Okay," he pulled the phone away from his ear, "here ma, she wanna talk to you." She stated with his hand out and she took it placing it to her ear.
"Yes?" She questioned softly, playing with the drawstring on her zip up cropped jacket.
"Well hey, didn't I ask you to check in on me if you were gonna be out later then ten?" Simone asked her rhetorically.
"I'm sorry, we was at celebration station and lost track of time." She explained hearing nothing but silence afterward.
"I guess I'll let it slide because this the first time." She spoke like she was trying decide if she should or not. "When you think you gonna be home?" She continued and kamaria nibbled on her bottom lip.
"Can I stay at ms Tamika house tonight? Please it's a Saturday." She asked, and Simone huffed dramatically.
"I knew you was gone ask me that shit. Go ahead I guess, but don't be getting ahead of yourself, sleep in savions room just incase !" She exclaimed in a playful tone but Kamaria knew she was serious.
"Okayyy I will."
"Alright, bye bye see you tomorrow some time. I'm finna call Tamika too , just to make sure y'all stay over there and not at Aaron's house." She stated and kamaria nodded since that was fair.
"Kay, bye bye love you." She muttered before her mother hung up.
"See now that wasn't hard." Samir added just because he knew it would get on her nerves.
"Shut the hell up, and take me to Dairy Queen I want more ice cream." She crossed her arms and he shook his head.
"Here you go trynna get me to be some type of chauffeur."
