"How her hair flows when she walk, Like a Love Jones when she talk."
SAMIR MONTGOMERY
NOVEMBER 21st, 2007
WEDNESDAY 4:54 pm
"LET ME TRY some of yours." Samir leaned over using his own spoon to scoop some of kamarias Oreo mcflurry on it, putting in his mouth quickly after before she could object.
"Yo childish ass always eating my damn food. If you wanted one I could've got you one." She complained shaking her head, "you said you wanted a sundae with caramel so eat that shit." She pointed at the cup with ice cream and caramel drizzled on it.
"Why you gotta be so violent." He rolled his eyes , but she just ignored him, going over the problems they had just practiced. "I can always get you another one." He went on, doing nothing but annoying her even more.
Sometimes she didn't know how she put up with him, it was like dealing with her thirteen year old brother at times.
"Just hush, we almost done." She threw her hand up to silence him, and he did exactly that, pursing his lips.
The two were sitting in a corner at a table in McDonald's, it wasn't busy because it was the day before thanksgiving, but they decided to do their tutor session there because they both wanted ice cream.
He sat back picking his cup back up starting to eat his ice cream waiting for her to finish going over everything he had done. He was so happy they were only working for thirty minutes today, plus she treated him with ice cream so he was all for it.
"Okay..." she dragged placing the paper down. She glanced at the paper doing once over one more time before she nodded. "Good job slim." She said once and for all.
He couldn't hide the cocky smirk that took over his face. He was getting better everyday thanks to kamaria, he couldn't believe she was such a good tutor.
He watched her pick up her mcflurry using the spoon to stir the oreo crumbs in some more , bringing it up to her mouth. "So what you wanna be when you older? A teacher?" He questioned curiously.
She smirked, swallowing what she had in her mouth. "What make you think that?" She questioned with a small grin on her face.
"Ion know I think it fit you. Plus you good at teaching me and helping me so I feel like it's in yo nature or some shit." He expressed to her truthfully. "I can see you being a good teacher." He nodded.
"Well, I know I'm good at teaching but that's just not what I wanna do in the long run." She shrugged her shoulders twisting the spoon to lick it clean.
"So what you wanna do?"
"I wanna be a paralegal." She stated confidently, but he just stared at her, licking over his lips slowly. She gulped scooping more ice cream on her spoon.
"Tayta, please don't think I'm stupid when I say this. But what the fuck is that?" He questioned seriously, and she couldn't help but to let the laugh out that the statement caused. "I've never heard of that shit in my life I swear."
"I don't thin you stupid." She giggled letting the ice cream melt in her mouth. " A paralegal is like an assistant for a lawyer. I used to want to be a lawyer, but paralegals require less education and tuition. So I feel like it's close enough." She shrugged.
"So you wanna go to college?" He asked to confirm watching her nod eagerly. A smile took over his face seeing how excited she got at the mention of college.
"I pray I can get some type of full ride scholarship, my test scores are good though and so is my GPA." She went on talking. She loved the topic of what she wanted to do in the future. "You wanna go to college slim?"
He paused, blinking slowly. He wasn't sure if he wanted to get into it. "I'm not gone lie, yeah." He nodded surprising her. "I think about it sometimes, but I already know i probably won't." He shrugged.
She furrowed her eyebrows. "What you mean?" She questioned having a good idea, but if anybody didn't know, she definitely knew it was ways around it.
"I gotta a charge on my record, and I did 3 years of juvenile prison time. Ian getting in no good college at least." He explained, "plus, everbody took they SAT and ACTs last year I feel like I'm behind wit most shit." He went on.
She smacked her teeth, "That charge on your record has the liability to drop once you turn eighteen. Even if you can't get into a Ivy League or some shit—" she joked "community college is still an option, and it may not be the best but it's something. And cheaper." She pointed raising her eyebrows.
"And the tests, you can always go somewhere to take them. I can help if you want—but if you wanna go to college ion think you should give up just because of your past." She pursed her lips, "if you live yo life according to your past and past only, then what's the point of a future?" She questioned.
"You serious?" He eyed her unsure of if she was just getting his hopes up.
"Samir, your a senior. You don't got a lot of time before you gone be graduating and then what? I'm a junior so I take my tests this year, we can study together and I can help. But it can't be one sided, you gotta try and put in effort" She gave him her only condition.
His teeth sunk into his bottom lip, shifting his eyes everywhere. "If you think I got a chance , I can try." He finally agreed.
"Okay deal." She picked her pen back up starting to write something on the loose leaf she was using to jot stuff down while working with Samir, then tore the piece she wrote on off, placing it in her folder.
"You ready to go?" She looked up seeing he was trying to finish of his ice cream. Once he nodded she laughed, "you want me to get you another one—or a mcflurry. I'm finna get one for the walk home and you ain't getting none." She raised her eyebrows.
He laughed at the serious look on her face. "You be trickin, tayta ?" He teased her referring to how she offered to buy him something else. It wasn't like he couldn't buy his own, but she kept insisting like she was his mother or something. "I can pay for my own shit." He continued.
She rolled her eyes, "duh, of course you can. Still though, it was my idea to come here so why make you get it yourself?" She asked, packing her things up.
"What ever you say tayta," He spoke unconvinced "but I'm good ion want another one. Thank you though." He thanked her, putting his backpack on over his right shoulder.
"So you playing kickball with us today?" She asked before closing her eyes, "you know what ion know why I asked. Of course you is." She placed her bag on her shoulder picking up her empty mcflurry cup.
He laughed at her.
Every time there was a break like fall, winter, spring and summer break, all of their families merged together to play a big kick ball game. The more people the more fun the game was, so sometimes even people who werent family ended up in the game if they wanted.
It would be a heap of people, and Samir couldn't wait because this would be his first game since he had been out.
It would be samir, Savion, tameeka, Aaron, kyree, Kyaire, kamaria, Simone, Dexter and his wife bianca, Sarai, then Kourtney, Saint, and their mother tonya. They always chose the day in the middle of the week, so that would be today once the sun went down a little.
"We doing it at campbell park this year." She said walking around the table throwing her cup away, reaching in the back pocket of her jean shorts pulling out a ten dollar bill.
Samir didn't even question where she got the money from, he knew she had a job.
He stood by the door that took them out while she stood at the counter ordering another mcflurry for the walk back like she had told him already.
Samir let his tongue run over his top row of his teeth, unable to tear his gaze from kamaria who was standing at a distance with a soft smile on her face handing over the ten dollar bill, receiving her change afterwards.
She glanced back to see if he was still there, before stepping to the side, watching the cashier pick up a cup and fix the treat in front of her face before passing it over. Kamaria shot her a quick thank you before departing, meeting back up with Samir.
"Okay I'm ready, we can walk home now." She informed him stirring the oreo crumbs in her ice cream thoroughly. Samir pushed the door open and stepped to the side holding it, letting her get through. He then let the door go, taking two big steps to catch up with her.
They walked getting on the side walk, and like always kamaria was pushed on the inside making her subtly roll her eyes at the act, still appreciating it.
The wind was beginning to pick up, and kamaria pushed her loose curls behind her ear carefully with ice cream in her mouth. She had already taken her braids out, but when regarding hair she always did what she wanted because she had a friend that could also do it whenever she wanted as well.
"Have you been spending a lot of time wit yo brother?" Kamaria finally asked randomly, wanting to spark the conversation back up so that the walk wouldn't be awkward. They weren't far from home, but conversation always made it quick. Sometimes even too quick.
"Mhm, of course yo brother be tagging along too. I jus wanna spend enough time before he go back again." Samir explained, holding the back pack on his shoulder firmly, with his other hand holding his pants up and he took long strides with his legs.
"Would you ever want to go to famu if you had the chance?" She went on letting the curiosity do the talking for her. Sometimes she wondered if he wanted to do something like his brother had.
Samir wasn't that good at football, but basketball was a different story. She had saw it front row, first hand, so she knew he had it within him. She just hoped he wasn't a statistic that threw his talents away to be deep in street activity anyway.
"Nah, but I used to talk about Florida state, I doubt that shit now." He shrugged making kamaria mug him.
Realizing she was silent he looked seeing the hard glare on her face making him laugh at her, "what? I didn't even say nothing." He turned his head back forward, watching his surroundings.
"What did I just tell you about that shit. Stop thinking shit ain't possible because of that. It's possible, and I can promise you that. But if you don't got enough faith to try you can just tell me now and I won't waste my time." She frowned.
"Alright chill, I'm sorry." He apologized. He knew with just one person like kamaria on his shoulder he would have a way better chance. The fact that she believed in it made him have a little more faith too, because he knew she wouldn't intentionally set him up for failure.
She nodded once, feeling okay with his apology before she divulged in her ice cream again.
"Now back to your brother." She started again making him slightly mug her.
"What you trynna talk about him to me for." He muttered, stuffing his hands in his pocket. His adams apple bobbed once he swallowed the lump in his throat , then he pursed his lips signaling he didn't want to talk.
"Boy—" she smacked his shoulder and rolled her eyes, "don't even try and do me like that. I was referring to the fact that he keeps calling me your girlfriend like he thinks we together." She went on making his lips immediately part.
"I'm judging by the look on your face you got something to tell me?" She raised her eyebrows. He dropped his head with an amused smirk on his face, before shaking his head.
"See what had happened was, before he got here my mom told him we was secretly dating because of some shit she think she saw and he just been going with it. No matter how much I correct him. So my bad—but it's really my momma fault." He shrugged concluding her suspicions.
Kamaria bursted our into laughter, "was did she even see. I don't think I've did anything weird have I?" She questioned unable to wipe the smile from her face. She couldn't get over how tameeka was so adamant.
"She said some shit bout how we was looking at each other, ion know." He shrugged unsure of himself. He had tuned his mother out because she was probably right. He didn't recall but he had already admitted out loud that he did sometimes get lost in his thoughts when he look at her because she was pretty.
He wouldn't deny it because then he would be lying, but he also wouldn't entertain the idea that it was something that was bound to turn romantic between them. He didn't want to think about that.
Over time he realized if it were to happen then he would let it run it's corse because he wasn't completely against it—even more after getting to know her better in the one on one time they were constantly spending together , but he wouldn't let other people talk him into acting on something he wasn't sure he was ready for yet either. He was sure she felt the same or else she would've said something.
He felt pressured because of the people in his ear, mostly his mother. Still he wouldn't act off pressure, if there was a day where he would actually try with kamaria he had to make sure it was 100 percent him thinking and not him letting people get in his head. He wasn't sure if he was ready with what came behind pursuing her.
After all, they had known each other for years on top of years. Their families were basically one big merged family, and his bestfriend in the whole world was her older brother. He had listened and watched her brother open up to him about not wanting to see her grow up because of how precious she still was in his eyes, and Samir understood because he still saw her that way too.
So to try anything with her would shift a lot of things into a different perspective.
On the contrary, if he was asked he wouldn't say he had zero feelings for kamaria. In his opinion anybody in his position would be placed in the same predicament. She was pretty, understanding, smart, and funny and playful. Who wouldn't catch feelings? Constantly being alone with her no matter what they were doing did nothing but help him realize that all the more.
Plus, nobody could tell him she didn't flirt with him on the low. He wasn't crazy nor blind, he knew he couldn't have been crazy. The whole ordeal was honestly driving him crazy.
"You ever had a boyfriend before, tayta?" He blurted the question, widening his eyes afterwards. He had been thinking about it but didn't mean to say it out loud.
"As a matter of fact I have. Why?" She didn't think anything of it. She didn't know if she wanted to open up about it because she still had to remember him and her brother were more brothers than bestfriends. They told each other everything.
"Cause, I just wanna know if you was ever in a relationship what would y'all even break up over. Did you fuck up or him—who was the nugga?" He craned his neck to look at her.
She stayed silent , turning on their street with him hot on her trail. "How I know you not asking me to go report back to my brother or something. Ain't you like his side kick?" She replied.
He smacked his teet, "y'all gone stop playing with me wit dis side kick, side character shit." He shook his head earning a giggle from her. "If anything he my side kick. But if it means that much —I promise I won't tell yo brother. What ever we say is confidential, between us." He promised.
For extra measures she put her pinky out and he stared at it for a moment, then he exhaled a large breath before linking their pinky's shaking them firmly.
"Okay fine, my ex's name was zion. And we broke up because he lied to me, there." She shrugged carelessly, which alerted him that it could've been more.
She wasn't that careless about anything. "So he lied once and you broke up with him?" He raised his eyebrows at her confession. He didn't know why, but that worried him.
"Kicked his ass to the curb." She stated in a monotone voice, dropping her hands to her side.
"Well now you gotta tell me more cause I'm lost." Samir urged her. He really wanted to know what would make her react in such a way.
She bit her lip contemplating, unsure if she really wanted to open up so much about this. Truthfully, it didn't hurt her that much that she couldn't talk about it, but she did feel some type of way. "Alright." She rolled her eyes with a huff.
"I have two rules in a relationship. I've only been in one, but I know the basics. I told him from the beginning that one, if he cheated on me we were done, and two that I hated liars with a passion. I told him if he lied to me about anything it was over." She stated.
"You seem like the type." He muttered. She smacked her teeth starting to smile at his slug towards her. She found it funny so she wouldn't say anything tough.
"We broke up because he did both. The worse part, was that he cheated on me with my sister—Sarai. He didn't have sex with her but I think it was more of an emotional —entertainment thing." She explained making his eyes widen.
"She knew y'all was together?" Samir immediately asked before he got to thinking the worse. When his thoughts were confirmed by her nod his jaw dropped, "Kyaire know?" He questioned, receiving a head shake telling him no.
"Sarai is my sister above anything else. What she did was grimey , but what can I really do besides keep my distance from her and cut zion off completely?" She questioned. "She'll always be my sister and she'll always be around. It's already weird between us, but the whole family knowing she messed with my nigga knowingly would just make the tension worse, not just for me but everybody. I decided against that." She pursed her lips.
"It hurt, because no matter our differences, I would never stoop that low, but life happens." She went on while he respected her staying quiet. "When I asked him about it—after already finding out, he lied straight to my face. I had heard it from sarais mouth myself, but he lied straight to my face like I was stupid. I was ten steps ahead."
"It was crazy because I thought we were getting so serious that I started talking about him sometimes to Kyaire, kyree and my mother. Of course Kourtney knew..." she trailed off. "Then one day I just stopped talking about him, and eventually Kyaire asked but I just brushed it off saying I moved on which he had no problems with because he didn't want me dating anyway. Still him being a brother he asked why and I gave him a bullshit excuse." She swallowed.
"That's why youn really care for yo sister?" Samir finally questioned. He honestly had no idea what to say to that. If his brother were to ever knowingly pull something like that he couldn't say he would've reacted with the same class that kamaria had.
"Yeah." She admitted, "we were never bestfriends or nothing, but before, we actually used to hang out and tolerate each other on an easier level. That's how she knew about zion in the first place. Now if it doesn't concern family gatherings or events, I don't like to see her." She grumbled.
"Enough of that though," she exhaled actually feeling better now that she was able to talk to someone about it who wasn't biased. With Kourtney she was ready to ride at dawn when she found out, but Samir had no choice but to just listen.
"When was this?"
"Boy this is the last question imma answer about it, you got that?" She raised her eyebrows and he grinned but still nodded showing he understood. "It wasn't that long ago actually, it was during the summer so something like a little summer fling." She put a time frame on it.
"Damn that's crazy, ion know if I can look at yo sister the same now though. Just knowing she capable of some shit like that." He scratched the back of his palm.
"Regarding me, let this be a lesson for you too so you don't make the same mistakes." She started gaining his attention. "Sometimes, when people want something that you have bad enough, they throw their loyalty for you out the window to get whatever they want. Envy and jealousy, triumphs everything. Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way." She shrugged.
What kamaria didn't know, was that she put Samir in for a loop once she said that. It was like her words sunk down deep, and embedded in his mind. He would never forget that.
He gulped, but remained quiet as they walked up to kamarias house that clearly had multiple cars parked around the front yard and drive way, letting them know everyone was in there.
"Why they didn't tell me they was meeting here." She paused shaking her head. "Sit with me on the porch for a second so ion have to share. Please." She did prayer hands begging him.
"Aight but hurry up." He reluctantly gave in.
She beamed and her bright smile took over her face. She walked to the porch stairs sitting down and he took that as a sign to sit down next to her. He leaned back placing his elbow on the step behind him, and extended his right leg out.
They sat in silence while she engaged in her ice cream, and he would glance at her every once in a while but he figured after their conversation she didn't want to talk any more.
So she took him by surprise when she turned her body a little bit more towards him and said, "I like you more than zayden." She muttered.
This brought a smirk to his face as she mentioned his other bestfriend who was currently doing time in juvie right now. He was the hot head of the group.
"Why?"
She shrugged shifting her eyes around unsure if she wanted to explain, "cause, you more easy to talk too. Half the time anything I told you today would've got delivered back to my brother or he would get on me like he my dad. Which I appreciate, but dang can you just act your age for a second and understand where I'm coming from." She jerked her head back thinking of zayden.
Samir laughed at this because that sounded like zayden. "I feel you, but technically he wouldn't be wrong. He yo brother friend not yours—see me? I like to think we friends right?" He raised his eyes brows in a taunting manner making her smack her teeth.
"What ever boy." She rolled her eyes. Samir snatched the half full cup of ice cream out her hand and picked the spoon up starting to eat it. "You know what, just keep it. Cause ya lying ass said you ain't want one." She crossed her arms over her chest bitterly.
"Preciate it." Was all he said calmly, not objecting to her claims because she was right. He leaned towards her kissing her on the cheek before he stood up.
He put his hand out and she huffed grabbing onto it letting him pull her up. "Aight come on."
Thoughts and predictions? Helping him w college? Her opening up about Sarai and zion? Small porch talk?
