SAMIR MONTGOMERY
SEPTEMBER 8th, 2007
SATURDAY, 8:13 pm

SAMIR COULDN'T WIPE the smile from his face as he sat in the passenger seat of his best friends black Chevrolet el camino. They had been driving for a total of two hours since the juvenile detention center he was released from was a distance from his home neighborhood.

He hadn't said much but he felt so much relief finally being released after three and a half years. He could've never seen himself in this position a few years ago when he was just a kid.

After doing his time he felt like the person he used to be was gone. He wasn't the same, he had toughened up tremendously. His mindset had changed, he had hit puberty, his hair grew, his voice was deeper, it was just so much stuff that was different about him.

People would've thought the life changing event would knocked some sense into him but really after his recovery it boosted his ego. Not a lot of people could go around saying they survived a shot to the chest.

"What's on yo mind nigga. You ain't sayin much of anything, I thought you would be more happy now." Kyaire spoke as he finally turned into childs park.

Samir let his eyes look all around seeing how pretty much nothing about his home had changed. Kyaire thought maybe he could get Samir talking before they actually got out, since it had been two hours in the car and they said pretty much nothing.

Samir licked his lips running his fingers through his hair. "Ion really got shit to say. I'm trynna see what it is, you feel me? Let me know what it is." He looked to his left as Kyaire drove with one hand.

"Nothin much for real. Zayden still got a few months, I been coolin. Practicing riding my bike and shit." He referred to his dirt bike. Samir smiled, he was happy he would able do things like that again. He had a passion for that.

"Damn man, zay ass stay in trouble wasnt he just out three months ago?" He questioned and Kyaire nodded his head. Their third friend stayed in trouble the most, Kyaire was way more sneaky about what he did in the streets because his parents did not play.

He was cautious, zay was reckless. He was happy that Samir was out because he was by his self without his two day ones. It was sad because when zay got locked up that's when Samir got released.

"So what, you think my pops and ya moms serious?" He questioned curiously. He had been informed about them two months ago when Kyaire visited him but he knew his dad was never serious about relationships, and Kyaire thought the same about his mother.

"Ion know, in my opinion they not even really together, they like fuck buddies or some shit." Kyaire revealed making Samir nod slowly. That sounded like Aaron. "I give 'em like a few more months before that shit over." He expressed while Samir just listened silently agreeing.

Eventually they pulled up in front of the white and blue nice sized house. It looked different from when he was a kid, now there was a garden and the home looked repainted as well. The grass was extremely green as if they had been taking good care of it and watering it. There were little signs for Kyaire since he would be graduating at the end of this school year in 2008. The porch had a few chairs and plants on them and that was about it.

Samir knew his father was there, and he could see the lights on in the house so he wasn't tripping. He had no idea about the party, so he hadn't second thought when he took a breath and opened the door.

A little part of him was ready to finally see kamaria after all these years of trying to contact her. Kyaire started teasing him swearing he liked the girl but that was no where near his intentions.

He knew the experience was traumatic for her as much as it was for him. He hadn't seen her since that day and he just wanted to tell her that it wasn't her fault. She was like his little sister, he would do it all over again if it meant she was safe.

He hoped that nobody else got the misconception that he wanted her in a romantic way because that was far from it. Kyaire was basically his brother, he used to look at her like family when he was fourteen because Kyaires family was samirs family.

Samir walked around the car meeting up with Kyaire at the front of his car. Samir looked at the car and back at his best friend as they walked up the side walk. "Who got you this car again? It's nice." He looked at the all black car.

The front seat could fit three people, and then he had a pick up area on the back since it was a mixture of a two door car and a pick up truck. "My pops, a few months ago." He answered with a shrug putting his hood over his head with his long dread locs spilling out the sides.

"It's nice. I gotta get on my shit so I can get one." He nodded. He knew he wouldn't get that particular car, but he knew something had to happen.

"Fa sho. And until then, you know I gotchu wit da rides." Kyaire promised him. A deep chuckled emerged from Samir as he laughed lowly walking up the three steps connected to the porch.

Kyaire opened the screen door and Samir opened the main door.

"Suprise!" Everybody shouted in unison watching the two figures walk through the door.

For a split second he was about to go into defense mode before realizing what was going on. A large smile took over his face as he looked around at all the familiar but older faces.

His eyes flickered to the banner that wrote welcome home and he couldn't feel more relaxed. He felt so much better being back home.

His dad pushed through the crowd immediately wrapping his arms around the boy.

Samir was dressed down Burberry including the hat he was wearing side ways thanks to Kyaire of course who had to make sure he didn't look like a bum when everyone welcomed him home. He also had a band aid on his jaw from a accident a few days ago that left a mark.

He had a firm grip around his dad hugging him tightly as everybody watched with smiles. When Samir pulled back he couldn't wipe the smile from his face. "Wassup everybody." He said loud enough hearing various forms of hey.

That gave him the green light to go around greeting everybody.

Kyaire walked over to his mother who was conversing with his little sister Sarai. "Oh my gosh K3 I was looking for you." Sarai looked always from Simone. She used her right arm to side hug him while he laughed.

"Wassup Sarai, what y'all talking bout?" He questioned looking between them. Simone and Sarai had a calm relationship despite the fact that Sarai was a product of when their dad stepped out on her to conceive her.

She knew to never take it out on a child, that lacked morals and ethics. She didn't even see Sarai enough for it to be anything bad between them. Sarai was a sixteen year old girl, she was innocent in that department.

"We was just talking about how school is so far, since it started a month ago. I'm doing good." Sarai answered telling her the truth. Kyaire had to give her a slight side eye.

Kyaire, kamaria, and kyree all went to school with Sarai and he saw first handedly how she acted at school. Yet he wouldn't say anything because her behavior didn't mean her grades were bad, so perhaps she was telling the truth.

"That's what's up, I know you betta stop acting out though. Everytime I'm around I hear your name being brought up, stop bein messy. School is for work." He told her mushing her head.

"Boy don't be checking me about behavior." She crossed her arms over her chest rolling her eyes with a mean mug.

"Ay, I go to school and do my work. What ever I do outside of school don't pertain nothing that interferes with my school work. So miss me with that." He pointed seriously not wanting her to go into detail infront of his mother.

"Anyway, enough of school talk cause it's Saturday. Where my other sista at?" He questioned looking between Simone and Sarai. Sarai shrugged so he focused all his attention on his mother. "Where she at momma?"

Simone sighed, "she went to stay at kourtneys tonight. She made some excuse about not wanting to be around all these people. I can't blame her, the house packed, and the back yard too." She looked out the clear sliding door.

"So basically she ain't even here." He concluded watching her nod. He shook his head at that piece of information. He didn't understand what his sister was running from, he had told her so many times it wasn't her fault and it was just all in her head but it was like it went in one ear and right through the other.

"Nope." Sarai beamed standing on her tippy toes before dropping back down rocking on her heels.

"Dang. Well alright I'm finna go check on kyree. He in his room?" He questioned and Simone nodded easily as her attention had been moved to Aaron who was standing on the other side of the living room talking to a woman.

Kyaire noticed, and removed himself from the equation quickly. He swaggered away from them and Samir caught him, "aye lemme be right back I gotta holla at K3." He used the excuse to get away from a group of adults preaching to him that it was time to turn his life around now that he was free.

Yes Samir had changed and had been into way more heavy street related things with being locked up, but his reason for even getting locked up wasn't anything like that. He ran from the police out of fear and got a slap on the wrist simple. So he didn't feel the need for unnecessary lectures.

Samir jogged away from them catching up with Kyaire. "Wassup man, they ain't playin with my ass. Talkin bout takin me to church tomorrow and shit." He immediately spoke to Kyaire as they walked to the back of the house. He didn't even know what they were doing.

Kyaire started laughing, "you shoulda been preparing for that in that long ass car ride where you barely said 3 sentences." He clowned making Samir shake his head, "that don't matter though, let's go bother ky." He nodded his head towards the closed door that read KY's room.

All three kids had signs on their doors. Kamaria decorated them, she thought it was a cute way to label things.

Kyaire twisted the door nob swinging the door open seeing kyree playing on his Xbox 360. Kyrees head snapped up thinking it was a random stranger. Realizing what was going on he hopped up placing the controller on his full sized bed.

"Slim, what it is?!" He greeted excitedly dapping him up pulling him into a bro hug.

"Damn I know dat ain't kyree sounding like dat. Yo voice getting deep boy how old you is? 12?" He questioned playfully as they finished off their hug.

"Nigga I'm 13." He stood almost as tall as samirs 6'2 frame. He was tall and skinny, hence the name slim.

"Nigga you tall as hell, fuck they feeding y'all niggas."

Kyree couldn't do nothing but laugh since everybody said that. He was sure he got his height form his dad, but a little bit of his mom too. Even kamaria was 5'8.

"Hell you in here for?" Kyaire said plopping on his bed pulling out a baggie of weed from his pocket. He started unraveling the top to open it.

"Ion know dem people, you and m lil bit wasnt here so." He shrugged , and this made Samir tune in frowning. There was no way this girl was still running from him, he was wondering when he would see her, but he didn't even know what to look for.

He just knew she was a dark skin, with full lips. He only had knew what she used to look like so he was going off of that. "What? Why lil bit ain't here?" He questioned and kyree shrugged.

"she went to her friend house." Kyree told him and Samir listened to that before shrugging. "Anyway, ion know why you rolling that right now you ain't finna be able to smoke shit til way later on tonight when everybody leave." He told his older brother.

"Nigga who? Imma go on the side of the house." He told his younger brother sitting at the edge of the bed. He opened his mouth to say more, but then he just felt like someone was coming. "Fuck." He whispered standing to his feet.

He sat the half rolled blunt down on top of a container then moving it to the side of Kyrees bed just in time when the door swung open. Samir just stood there amused. If you asked him Kyaire had some type of spider senses of the sort.

Simone stood there eyeing him as he stood straight, Samir was biting back his smirk. "Boy, your dad looking for you." she told Kyaire making him furrow his eyebrows not knowing he was here. "Lil bit just got here with Kourtney and saint, and why you in here Samir you the life of the party." She said looking between Samir and Kyaire.

"I thought lil bit was staying at Kourtney house." Kyaire said as if he didn't just have that conversation with his mother only a few moments prior before coming in Kyrees room.

Simone just shrugged not having a explanation. "We comin momma, we was just checking on Ky." Kyaire spoke the half truth. She eyed him a little longer before looking around the room seeing nothing.

"Alright well come on out."

She closed the door back as she took a exit and Kyree immediately started laughing at his older brother. "You was so scared, it was written all over yo face." He teased his older brother.

"Mmcht man I was even scared I was trynna make sure she ain't see dat weed. Dumb ass." He muttered picking his blunt back up, but all Samir could do was laugh.

He hadn't genuinely laughed in so long he couldn't remember, but tonight that was all he had been doing. He had the prettiest smile. He was just overall happy to be free, he couldn't bare to think about anything else besides that, and that alone had the smile plastered on his face.

"She said my dad here looking for me, I'm trynna go see wassup." Kyaire said in a hushed tone as he passed by Samir stuffing his lighter in his pocket.ย

Samir was close behind, and even kyree decided to now leave his room since his brother was here and he knew someone. He knew almost everyone there but he just knew of them, no real association.

Coming back to the front kyaire laid eyes on his dad excusing himself from the two to go engage with them. "im thirsty as a mufucka." Samir licked his lips looking around.

"Only drinks I seen was out back, i think it was liquor for them grown folks though." kyree explained briefly putting his hands in his pockets.

Samir started shaking his head, "nah man. im on probation for six months cant do none of that right now." he shook his head not thinking that was a good idea.

It had been explained that he couldn't drink or smoke,ย  his parole officer could do random pop ups, and random drug tests, he had a curfew, and if it was discovered that he wasn't following the procedures he could get locked back up.

"ian gone lie, i just want some water." He revealed truthfully. That was the only thing that would actually quench his thirst right now. Anything else would probably just make him more thirsty.

"Come on, you can get a cold one out the refrigerator." Kyree nodded his head towards the kitchen. Samir shrugged, taking a big gulp since his mouth was so dry. He followed kyree looking at the back of his head.

He had gotten so tall, it was so shocking. Kyree couldn't have been nothing but 4'11 when he got locked up. Now he was a good 5'10 which wasn't taller than him, but it was still tall for a 13 year old boy.

Walking into the kitchen kyree headed straight for the white refrigerator pulling it open. Samir tucked his bottom lip his mouth watching kyree get a cold zephyr hills water bottle.

"Ky, get me one too."

The soft voice made Samirs ears perk slightly, wondering who it was. Kyree grabbed another one then turned passing both to Samir. "Here slim, pass one to lil bit." He muttered closing the fridge.

Samir swallowed the lump in his throat turning his head to see the dark skinned girl wearing the same expression as him. She was hoping she could avoid him, and he didn't expect the voice to belong to her.

He eyed the girl standing next to her friend, Kourtney. The light blue really complimented her skin color. She had pretty and plump two toned lips, with a small button nose and a small stud sitting in it. Her eyes were slanted and her eyebrows were arched to perfection. Her hair was slicked up into two pig tails and her baby hairs were tamed and laid down.

His eyes dropped down taking in the curves she sported , and her clothes hugged her body tightly as she stood there blinking slowly. Even her natural eyelashes were so long , she looked like a pretty barbie doll.

Oddly enough, she was doing the exact same thing. Her eyes roamed all over his matured face. His hair fell in front of his eyes framing his slender face. On his head he wore a Burberry hat off to the side, a plain white shirt and Burberry pants, along with his Nike shoes.

Around his neck sat a gold 14 carat 10mm gold chain topping off the casual look, yet he made it look so good. He stood six taller than her so she had to raise her eyes but not too much and she watched as he ran his tongue over his bottom lip slowly, placing his hand out for her to take the water bottle.

Kourtney and kyree watched them, their eyes shifting between each other wondering what was going on. They didn't want to say anything and make them realize they were staring at each other, they wanted to see how long it lasted.

She took it from him clearing her throat in the process. Finally she tore her eyes away from him and put them on her little brother. It wouldn't be that easy for her.

"Damn lil bit, I can't get a hey?" Samir spoke watching her open her mouth to address kyree and not him. He wouldn't let her get off that easy.

Yeah, he had eyed her lustfully but he just blamed it on him being fresh out. Looking was as far as it would go for a number of reasons. The first being their parents, his relationship with her brother, and the list could go on. Still he wanted them to get on common grounds, he was tired of being avoided. He wanted to know how she was mentally.

It was three almost four years later, and til this day he still didn't even know how she took everything. Whenever he asked anybody else about her they would just go quiet.

Kamaria couldn't stop the small smile from gracing her face at the sound of his deep voice. It didn't match his face at all, he had a baby face in her opinion, he looked adorable. Then he spoke and sounded like a grown man despite him being nothing but seventeen.

"I'm sorry slim, hey." She started, then sat her water bottle down. As much as she tried to avoid him it was impossible, it was nothing much she could do about it now but except it. Taking him by surprise she wrapped her arms around his torso giving him a full hug and he easily returned it.

He rocked them side to side biting down on his bottom lip as kamaria held back her tears. Feeling him in the flesh hit her harder than she anticipated, once upon a time she thought he was dead. It was like a weight had been lifted off of her shoulder to have him in her arms letting her know it was real and he was fine. She was in denial for the longest.

"I missed you lil girl, you be duckin and dodging a nigga." Samir laughed to lighten the mood which worked. Even Kourtney was standing aside with a small pout at how cute the scenery was to her.

Kamaria pulled back, "mmcht it wasn't even like that." She attempted to justify herself. She shook her head slightly watching him pick the water bottle back up, slowly beginning to twist the cap.

He kept his eyes trained on her face as he tilted his head a little bit, in question. "So what was it like? I wrote you, tried to talk to you on the phone, I asked about you, allat. Never got back to me." He claimed watching her purse her lips.

Waiting on a reply he finally took a gulp from his cold water bottle feeling at peace. It felt so good to drink the water in that moment. He felt so dehydrated.

Kamaria held her elbows across her stomach with a look of guilt written all over her face. "Can we not talk about this right now?" She questioned.

He looked at her for a moment before shrugging, "I was really just trynna get some understanding between us because I felt like you took on a big misconception all these years. If youn wanna talk den cool, not gonna force you." His dismissed it, turning around to go in the backyard with his water bottle still in tact.

"You a big ass baby. I'm telling momma." Kyree looked at his older sister as soon as he was gone, referring to how she had just shut Samir down when he tried to finally let her know how he felt about what happened.

He was finally face to face with her, ready to tell her that he didn't blame her and he did it to protect her, and she plain out told him she didn't want to talk about it.

"Shut up snitch."

"You always doin dumb shit, you acting like you the one who got a bullet wound on they chest." He continued making her face fall. Suddenly kyree felt a slap to the back of his head and whipped his head around to Kyaire standing there casually.

"Stop talkin to my lil sister like dat." He said calmly making kyree smack his teeth and roll his eyes. "Where slim?" He questioned looking around the kitchen. He last left Samir with kyree so he was sure to know what direction he was in at least.

"He went out there cause lil bit dissed him." He nodded his head towards the back yard. Kyaire raised his eyebrows.

"Watchu mean dissed?"

"He was trynna talk to herโ€”damn I got a mouth, bitch boy." Kamaria cut her younger brother with a hard mug, sizing him up and down rudely.

"How about y'all just worry about y'all self. I don't need no co signs, or nunnadat. I'm fine, why cant y'all just get over it like I did and leave me alone about the shit." She frowned picking her water up and exiting the kitchen with Kourtney hot on her trail.

Felt Cyrus when he said "don't run away from the truth" ๐Ÿ˜”
