look after you ━ the fray
”i'll look after you”
A SONG REPEATED in Willow's head as she walked into the cafeteria. Her gaze slowly returned to the table where Eli and Demetri sat, but as soon as she wanted to approach them, she felt someone's gaze being already on her, which made her furrow her eyebrows. She was even more confused when her gaze met the eyes of a sophomore boy that immediately sent her a wink.
She didn't know him. Not at all. Only his face could feel a little familiar to her, but she didn't even remember his name.
”You could use a little more positivity, Metri. You look as if you are going to kill someone” Willow commented as soon as she stood by their table, and then sat next to Eli. She quickly grabbed the last strawberry from the Demetri's tray, making him look at her with annoyance.
”Says you,” Demetri murmured, rolling his eyes, but then lifting them at the girl again. ”And hey? Who said you could take it?” he was outraged, but she only shrugged. There was an innocent smile on her lips. ”This is called theft and you know where the thieves end?”
Willow pursed her lips, trying not to burst out laughing. ”Awh, don't be so grumpy. You're acting worse than Charlie when he loses the game”
Her comment made him snort at her. Willow enjoyed teasing people, especially Demetri, who would always get mad at her because of it. That was why Willow always called Eli the calm friend. Demetri was more like a grumpy one. Especially after the end of the summer.
”You're going too far, Willow” the Alexopoulos pressed her full name harder on purpose, intended to piss her off, but this time it made her laugh even more. He definitely wasn't made for being angry, because he looked comically then. ”I'm going to stab you with my teaspoon in one second” he warned her, which made her raise an eyebrow at him.
”Eli is going to save me,” she smiled widely, turning her eyes at the boy, who was fully silent, listening to his two friends arguing again. ”Aren't you?”
The Moskowitz only nodded his head in agreement, which was enough for Willow to show Demetri a satisfied look on her face. She knew that Eli had a soft side for her since they were kids, so every time her and Demetri argued, he always took her side.
”Well, that's just not fair.” the brunette boy mumbled in disapproval.
”Is it cool if I sit here?”
A sudden, but also familiar voice sounded from behind, which made her turn her head to the side, facing the Diaz boy that she met one day ago. As soon as she saw him, she gave him a small wave, which he couldn't return because he was holding a tray in his hands, but he sent her a smile instead.
”Sorry, tables really blowing up right now” Demetri spoke even before Willow could say something. She sighed, looking at him with a resigned look, but her eyes once drifted to the Moskowitz's boy that sat next to her, smiling ear to ear, which made her face soft a little. ”I can put you on a wait-list, but it's probably next semester at the earliest” the Alexopoulos added.
The Diaz exhaled. ”Okay” he started walking away from them, but the Froud girl quickly reached out for his wrist, stopping him.
”He's just joking around, don't worry. You can sit with us, Miggy” she announced.
With that, Demetri shot her a suspicious look as he didn't understand how she could know the boy's name. After the incident from yesterday, only Eli knew that she had a new neighbor that she tried to help, but ended up being hit with the shards.
”How do you—” Demetri started, but Miguel interrupted him.
”We're new neighbors” he explained shortly as he took a seat next to the blonde girl that looked at the table, being the only one that didn't have any food. ”Miguel” he introduced himself.
The Alexopoulos nodded. ”Demetri” he then pointed to his friend. ”This is Eli” with that, Miguel murmured a nice to meet you to the Moskowitz boy, him still not speaking. ”He's a man of few words”
”But if he's comfortable with someone, he's really nice” Willow rushed to help her best friend.
The Froud girl almost snorted when a sudden ’gust of wind’ made her hair blow out onto her face. When she saw that it was just Yasmine and Sam, she rolled her eyes, stopping myself from saying a word bitch that wanted to slip out from her mouth. Despite everything, she decided not to stoop to her level as she bit her tongue.
The look that Miguel gave to the girls caused Willow to raise an eyebrow at him with a suspicious expression on her face.
”Dude, don't torture yourself. Those are the rich girls” Demetri pointed at the aka mean girls' table as Willow always called them.
She despised the girls. She couldn't stand how people still adored them after they made her life a living hell, and never even felt sorry for it. She remembered all the things they did to her ─ especially when one day Yasmine and Moon took her clothes after her P.E. lesson, so she had to borrow a hoodie and some shorts from a girl from her class. The next day they stuck gum in her hair, so she had to cut it to her shoulders, and also the next day they just made fun of her look again, which made her not go to school for two weeks.
There was a full list of reasons that Willow had every right to hate them, so why did people still try to protect them when they knew all the shit they did to the people?
”Do you ever talk to them or . . . ?” Miguel asked, furrowing his eyebrows at them.
”Duh— I would have to bring an anti-Yasmine spray with myself” Willow commented with a look of disgust.
”What?”
”Don't ask. Maybe one day I'll tell you about it” Willow placed her head on Moskowitz's shoulder, which made him purse his lips as he did everything he could to hold back the smile on his lips. ”Let's just say that me and the mean girls aren't on good terms”
”Eh, but we hang out after school, make out, give each other hand jobs” Demetri said, his voice filled with sarcasm. Willow turned to him, showing him a face as if she was ready to throw up as a word ’gross’ fell out of her lips. ”And Eli here is the homecoming king. Gets laid more than anyone. Ain't that right, Eli?”
Willow huffed from his words. Of course he would joke about them again, and of course it would be something that was equally involved in her.
”And Frills? Pulls out every guy, not even trying” Demetri pointed at something behind the girl, but she didn't turn around this time, deciding it was a much safer decision. ”Talk to them? You realize what table you're sitting at?” he furrowed his eyebrow at the Diaz boy that seemed defeated.
But instead, he asked about something completely different. ”Frills?”
”It's a combination of Froud and Wills. He created it in the seventh grade, thinking he's a Harry Potter minded one” her explanation indifferently as she was completely used to such things. They were way worse in the eighth grade. ”Plus, hey? I do pull guys, I'm just not a dating person”
”Rather, you scare them away” Demetri whispered, but it was quite easy for the girl to hear him, so she hit him on the back of the head, which made him look at her with an offended face. ”You pretty much signed away all hopes of losing your virginity before College”
The Froud girl turned to Miguel, shooking her head. ”Don't listen to him. He just likes to dramatize” she whispered. ”Plus, not everyone has their 'till college punishment, Metri”
”Yeah, right” he snorted, rolling his eyes at her.
”Oh, shit. Yasmine's looking at us. Probably just making fun of me” with Eli's words, Wills turned her gaze to the table of the mean girls and she scoffed when she saw Yasmine's gaze being already on them.
One day things are going to be different ─ she promised it to herself. She knew that one day will be enough for her to finally fight her and show her how she and her friends felt after she made fun of them. This time was going to be really different. This time the winner was going to be the one that wasn't expected at all.
”Don't look at her” she said to the Moskowitz boy, but he didn't listen to her at all, so she had to nudge him in the shoulder, which worked every time. ”Look at me instead” she ordered him.
”I don't think she's making fun of you, I mean . . .” Miguel started. ”Just because they're hot doesn't mean they're mean” he added, Demetri rolling his eyes in a reply.
”Well . . .” Willow spoke in an undertone, not agreeing with what Miguel has said. ”Not sure which movie you watched, but they are obviously making fun of people.”
”I don't care if Yasmine is the meanest girl at school. I'd kill the three of you just to get her to spit it in my face” Demetri admitted and Willow was ready to throw him on the ground and kick his ass.
She knew how much he adored the girl, so every hang out they had ─ he was obviously yapping about her. She couldn't believe how he could like the person that bullied him, because she would never fall in love with someone like that, right?
She would never.
”No, if you don't make a move, you'll never get a shot with her”
”I'm against it. By reminding you that I'm the only girl in our group, you won't get my blessing” the blonde girl reminded him, having a proud expression.
Demetri ignored the girl as he pointed at Miguel. ”True, but I'll also never suffer humiliating rejection. I'm at peace with my depression. Last thing I need is to be suicidal” Willow bit her cheek, hearing his words, but decided to stay quiet.
She frowned as Miguel stood up, looking as if he was hypnotized by the mean girls. That just made Willow sigh in defeat ─ she couldn't survive her other friend to have a crush on one of the girls.
”Oh, no. I totally don't like this” she snorted, blinking several times before looking straight at the boy that slowly started walking to the girls' table, he's eyes being on Sam.
”What are you doing?”
”Striking first”
Willow opened her mouth in a surprise. ”Dude, it's not a fairy tale with a known happy ending. Besides she's dating—”
She couldn't end her sentence as the boy was far away from her, but he stopped when he was Kyler there. She shook her head in disbelief as soon as Miguel stormed to their table, his head being on the ground. The nickname 'Rhea made her sigh as she knew that Miguel was becoming one of their next victims.
”So how did it go?”
Willow sent him a fake smile. ”Don't worry, my friend. It's just a begining”

WATCHIING ’Sam And Cat’ every Monday morning turned out to be a tradition that Willow shared together with her younger brother. At first, Charlie was completely against it, because he thought that his sister only wanted him to turn into a girl, but as soon as they watched two episodes, he quickly changed his mind, loving the series. She frowned when a door bell rang, but as the fact that they were alone at home, she was undecided if she should open the door for whoever it was.
She took a bowl of popcorn off of her knees, and handed it to her brother. ”Don't eat everything” she pointed at the bowl with a warning face.
When the bell rang again, she sighed and looked through the door peephole, but as soon as she saw that it was only her new friend, she unlocked the door, opening them. She glanced at him suspiciously, having her eyebrow raised.
”God, you okay? You look as if you were running a marathon” she commented as a grimace showed on her pursed lips. Miguel took a deep breath, before leaning towards the door frame. ”Not that you're not welcomed here or anything, but as much as I like the darkness, I don't want a serial killer to break into my house, so maybe come inside?” she suggested, moving aside.
Miguel nodded his head. ”Sure, thank you” he mumbled, walking inside.
He closed the door behind him, and then sent the Froud girl a look that only showed her that he had a specific reason for why he showed up there.
”Yeah, sorry. I'm after my karate training” Miguel explained, posting to the gym bag he had on his shoulder. That made Willow use a moment to think about that, which confused her even more.
”No proble—” she stopped herself from ending the sentence when his words finally got to her. ”Your what? You're doing karate?!” her voice was loud enough for Miguel to shush her. ”It's fine, my mom's at work”
He signed in relief. ”Good . . . I mean, not good, but good tho.” he could understand why she was so confused. ”Yes, I do karate. I just started, but it seems like a great thing, you know, but my Sensei suggested that I could bring some friends here and I thought . . .” he stopped, but Willow could end the sentence by herself.
Of course, karate seemed interesting to her. All the movies that she watched on Netflix or YouTube interested her more and more, and with she imagined herself doing it. But of course there was always some ’but’, which, for her, were her therapy sessions that she had to go to, so she couldn't reconcile them with additional training.
”Whatever the ’Sensei’ means, who's yours?” she asked, not clearly remembering any names from karate. When she watched any karate movies, she was watching the actors the most, but could she blame herself? They were attractive.
”It's a person that teaches you karate. You definitely know him. Well, he's our neighbor as if” he shrugged, and with that Willow started understanding. As soon as she did, she shook her head firmly.
”Hell no”
”Yes, please”
”No, stop with the puppy dog eyes. It's not working on me” she insisted, crossing arms on her chest. Miguel didn't stop, though. That was why Willow stopped looking at him.
The Diaz sighed. ”Come on, Wills. You told me that it's just the begining, so why not stop it?” the reminder of her words made her look at him with a scowl.
”It's not that easy, Mig. You can't just stop the bullies, because they don't care about you, and especially the consequences of their actions. Their parents are loaded as hell ─ they can pay every time something is pulled on their kids” she breathed out. ”Plus, you think I never tried to stop them? They'll never listen, and fighting with them . . .” she started unsure, but Miguel was quick to interrupt her.
”It can help. You can always quit if you don't feel the urge to continue”
She could not agree with him. ”And be called a loser or a quitter for the rest of my life? No thanks”
”Sensei's not like that” he argued back. ”And I wouldn't call you that. If you don't feel like it, it's not worth forcing yourself to continue ─ everyone should understand that” he gave her a shrug.
”Oh, trust me, he's exactly like that” Willow announced as she rolled her eyes. ”You know how he's been calling me since I lived here?” she asked him a rhetorical question.
He gave her a shake.
”A Dobby. Just because I once told him that I like collecting things” her declaration made him hold back his laughter.
”Well, that's a funny—”
”Shut up or I'll stab you with my brother's umbrella” she warned him.
With that, a sound of shock rang out behind her, and then her brother appeared next to her with an almost empty bowl.
”Leave my umbrella out of this. He didn't do anything wrong” Charlie announced with a mock of horror. ”Who's this broski?” he asked, pointing to Miguel with a very, very suspicious look.
”I'm Miguel. I'm your sister's friend” the Diaz shook hands with a young boy whose behavior started to shock his sister.
”Eh, nice to meet ya” Charlie announced, Willow nudging him with her elbow. ”Ouch, what was that for? You forgot that you're talking to a Brawl Stars player?”
The girl raised her hands in defeat. ”Never” her response was quite sarcastic, but he didn't have to know that. ”Holy mother, you ate all the popcorn” she huffed, shaking her head in disbelief.
Charlie stuck his tongue out at her, but when Willow tried to grab it, he quickly retracted it.
”What can I say? Only for the strongest” he had a wide smile on his lips. ”Can your bro watch Scream with us?” he then asked.
”Stop with the bro thing” she ordered him, looking at Miguel. ”And if he wants to, then why not”
Miguel took off his shoes, and hung his bag on the hanger. He gave the girl a look that only told her that their conversation isn't over yet.
”At least try?” his voice almost sounded like begging.
She raised her eyebrows. ”Why? You're scared that he will tire you to death and you don't want to be alone in it?” she joked, but as she saw that he didn't stop, she sighed. ”I'll see if that's fine with my schedule, but if he'll do anything that I won't like, I'll kick his ass” she warned.
”Who's ass do you want to kick?”
”No ones!” she shouted to her brother.
